S o many years ago, when I was a seminarian at St. Joseph, our curriculum included courses in liturgical music, with

especial consideration of the text above that came from the Second Vatican Council. We were instructed in all - it seems - the forms of music that could be used to enhance our experience of prayer in the liturgy, including Gregorian chant, sacred polyphony in both ancient and modern forms, sacred music for the organ and even sacred popular music. The Council was adamant that the more traditional forms of sacred music not be neglected but have an essential role in a congregation’s repertoire. I find it fascinating to note the interest today of many younger people and young clergy in the restoration of Gregorian chant at Mass and the Extraordinary Form of the Liturgy (also known as the “Tridentine” Mass). Of course, there are many fine songs and hymns composed today. As people learn through different modalities, so it’s likely there are probably different ways natural to our constitution that the liturgy and its music can help us in our prayer. Steve Agrisano, the prodigious composer of modern liturgical music (like “Go make a difference”) says that the key to providing music for the typical parish liturgy today is to “mix it up,” including music of different styles at each Mass. Judging from my perspective at the presider’s chair, and the sight of so few Catholics singing at Mass, it’s time for us to do more to ensure we create the conditions for a more fruitful experience of the Mass. We - Vincent Mateo, our music director, the priests and deacons - are therefore proposing a few changes toward that end. Among them: 1) Beginning in Advent, we will be using a bound hymnal, Glory and Praise, for most of our music selections at Mass. This, I think, we convey a certain seriousness about the role

music plays in our liturgy, as well as avoid the wastefulness of throwing out the paperwork hymnals (once a year) and missalettes (four times a year). The repertoire of songs that have been sung in our parish are well represented in this hymnal and the readings for Sunday are included for those who wish to follow along. 2) We will be celebrating the major feasts of the Church in a more solemn manner at certain Masses, usually the 11:00 am Mass in St. Thomas of Canterbury. Celebrations, like the coming Feast of Christ the King, will include more singing by priests and deacons particularly the Kyrie and other Mass parts, incensations, and the use of the Church’s full treasury of music from Gregorian to contemporary, English and Latin. Additionally, to strengthen our focus further in our prayer, Vincent is recommending that we refrain from applause both during and at the end of Mass. While it may be appropriate on occasion to express our gratitude for the work of our ministers in arranging the liturgy for us, Vincent worries that it may reduce the force of our experience of prayer in the liturgy. “I thank God every day for the enthusiasm of this parish for liturgical music,” Vincent writes, and goes on to say: “While I trust your hearts are in the right place…, applauding at the end of Mass is a practice generally associated with concerts and speeches; it is important for us to make our worship clearly distinct from such secular events.” I am grateful for his thoughtfulness and care for the souls entrusted to him through his ministry. He begs your prayers for our music ministry.

A Note From Fr. Doughty… Cardinal Dolan asks that we consecrate our Archdiocese and our parish to the Virgin Mary on December 8th, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. He has provided copies of the booklet, 33 Days to Morning Glory, to help us. The booklets are in the pamphlet rack in St. Thomas Church and on the back table in St. Joseph Church. Begin your prayers on Tuesday, November 5th. The booklets provide a plan to make a heartfelt offering of self to Mary’s desire that everyone should know the Blessed Fruit of her womb.

National Vocation Awareness Week, (Nov. 3-9), is an annual celebration of the Catholic Church in the United States dedicated to promote vocations to the priesthood, diaconate and consecrated life through prayer and education, and to renew our prayers and support for those who are considering one of these particular vocations.

Prayer for Vocations:

Lord Jesus, you who gave us your commandment of love of God and neighbor, and identified yourself in a special way

with the most needy of your people, hear our prayer. Faithful to your teaching, St. Marianne Cope loved and served her

neighbor, especially the most desolate outcast, giving herself generously and heroically for those afflicted by leprosy. She alleviated their physical and spiritual sufferings, thus helping them to accept their afflictions with patience. Her care and

concern for others manifested the great love you have for us. Through her merits and intercession, grant us the favor which

we confidently ask of you so that the people of God, following the inspiration of her life and apostolate, may practice charity

towards all according to your word and example. Amen. Through the intercession of St. Marianne Cope, I ask for the grace of (mention your request).
