A NOTE FROM FATHER KEVIN

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

+ Pax et Bonum!

Welcome to St. Maria Goretti on this our Second Sunday of Advent! Today is a BIG day around here! Usually December 8 is the Feast of the Immaculate Conception and a Holy Day of Obligation. Because December 8 falls on Sunday this year, it remains the Second Sunday of Advent, and the Feast of the Immaculate Conception gets transferred to tomorrow. Because it is transferred to another day and because it is being celebrated on a Monday, this year the obligation part of the Holy Day has been removed. Tomorrow, December 9, we will celebrate the Immaculate Conception with Masses at 7 am and 5:30 pm, but there is NO obligation to attend.

However, December 8 is a very special day here at St. Maria Goretti as the “regular” Feast of the Immaculate Conception has been used for multiple BIG occasions here at the Parish. On this day back in 1995, the First Mass ever held at St. Maria Goretti was celebrated in our Parish Hall, making today the 24th anniversary of the First Mass. It was on December 8, 2004, that our church building was dedicated and put into use, making today the 15th anniversary of the Dedication of our Church. Two years ago in 2017, the date was used again for the blessing and putting into use our bell tower. And just last year on December 8, we blessed and moved into our Eucharistic Adoration Chapel, making the Adoration Chapel now a year old today. We have much to celebrate and give thanks for! This evening’s 5:30 pm Mass, still for the Second Sunday of Advent, will be used to do just that, and a light reception will follow in the Parish Hall afterward. Please come join us as we “mark” these milestones and give thanks to the Lord!

This morning, we are also pleased to have our annual “Breakfast with St. Nick,” sponsored by our Holy Name Society, the Men’s Club of our Parish Family, after both the 8 am and 10 am Masses. All are welcome to come over to the Parish Hall after both Masses for a delicious, hot breakfast together and a chance to get to meet our very own St. Nicholas, who joins us for this special occasion, just in time to encourage the “kid” in all of us to keep preparing this Advent season for Jesus and His Birthday celebration.

Not so much into breakfast? Don’t worry! Our Altar Rosary Society, the Women’s Club of our Parish Family, has got you covered. The ladies take advantage of “Breakfast with St. Nick” by hosting one of their annual Bake Sales today also in the Parish Hall after the 8 am and 10 am Masses. Stop by and get some of their delicious handiwork to enjoy at home. What a fun and great tasting way to support our Altar Rosary Society!

Because of the holidays, our bulletin is being prepared on a special schedule that demands that the information that you are reading has to be submitted much further in advance than usual. Thanksgiving greatly affected our bulletin deadlines for the last couple of weeks, and Christmas is going to affect the deadlines pretty much for the entire month of December. Because of this advanced schedule, this is the first bulletin letter that I’ve written since we had our Daddy Daughter Dance back on November 22 to support our Sports Ministry program. I did want to thank all of our dads who came out and brought their daughters to a really fun evening for a great cause. Our Sports Ministry program is unlike any other. We really are trying to do something special with our teams and programs. It takes an amazing number of people to make it all work. And in particular, I did want to thank Danielle Cardinal for chairing this year’s Daddy Daughter Dance and her awesome committee of folks who helped put together the evening. Thanks also to all who donated raffle items for the event.

This week, please DON’T FORGET about our Advent Communal Penance Service this coming Tuesday evening, December 10, at 7 pm in the main sanctuary. A number of priests from our Deanery will be here to help us receive God’s mercy and forgiveness. Beat the long lines on Saturdays by coming to the Penance Service this Tuesday. We all need to take care of Confession BEFORE we get to Christmas! Put it on your list of things to do!

Have a great week! Keep preparing the way of the Lord!

In Christ, Fr. Kevin

The truth is not always the same as the majority decision.

Welcome! For more than 23 years now, we have been building the Kingdom of God, not with a few people, but with everyone! Please accept my warmest welcome, and I pray you will come to know St. Maria Goretti as we all do—our Spiritual Home and Loving Community. We are glad you are here and look forward to meeting you! God Bless you. —Father Kevin WELCOME: LUIS & ELISE SOLIS, DANIEL & LYSSA METTE, DOUG CLEMENTS, MATTHEW & BRIANNA MILLER, DAN & KELLY LATTAL, CHRIS & KATHY GATZ

AN ADVENT REFLECTION ON N STUDYDY AN ADVENT REFLECTION ONN TUDYST DYReflection by Jim Wack, Stewardship Committee Memberererer

Jesus prayed for His disciples that “they may all be one” just as He is one with His Father (John 17:11). That’s a tall order for us! We have the Bible, especially the Gospels, as well as all that the Church has learned over the past 2,000 years. We pray the Creed at Mass every Sunday and say that we believe in “one, holy, catholic, and apostolic church.” Are we all those things? What if we were one Church and lived Jesus’s teachings? Think of how much clearer the rest of the world would see Catholicism and want to join us if we were truly one Church in Jesus. As the new year 2020 approaches, I resolve to study Catholic teachings and to work toward being one. Our parish has

Bible studies, Faith & Froth, special speakers, the parish mission, and suggested books, all of which we can take advantage. Some are just one night or just one book. We need to do this together: just get started and then build from there. Who’s with me?

This ministry would not be successful without you!

Uniting in Heart is the Diocesan pastoral plan to unite our diocese in the heart of Jesus Christ through living out the 3 Pillars of Mission, Community, and Witness.

Many questions have arisen from the 2030 Pastoral Plan. This week we learn about those who will lead the transition at all levels.

WHAT IS THE DIOCESAN TRANSITION TEAM? WHO IS ON IT?

The Diocesan Transition Team will be made up of members of diocesan staff and management lead-ers from around the diocese who are appointed by the Bishop. This group will work with and assist the Pastorate Transition Team to prepare for the initiation of the new pastorate by providing them with assessment tools to review and understand their current reality. These assessments include: Evangeli-zation, Stewardship, Financial, Human Resources, Schools, Technology, Safe and Sacred, Safe Facility, Facilities Condition, and an Inventory of Sacred and Secular Goods.

WHAT IS THE PASTORATE TRANSITION TEAM?

The Pastorate Transition Team will be made up of 2-3 members of each parish that are part of the pastorate. This group will work with the Diocesan Transition Team using the assessments mentioned above, as well as consultation with the people of the Pastorate to prepare a transition document that contains recommendations for the new Pastor and his Pastorate Lead-ership Team, and Pastoral Council.
