The Ten Commandments

460. What are the duties of parents toward their children? Parents, in virtue of their participation in the fatherhood of God, have the first responsibility for the education of their children and they are the first heralds of the faith for them. They have the duty to love and respect their children as persons and as children of God and to provide, as far as is possible, for their physical and spiritual needs. They should select for them a suitable school and help them with prudent counsel in the choice of their profession and their state of life. In particular they have the mission of educating their children in the Christian faith.

News & Events

May 24 Update from Fr Brandon

1. Memorial Day weekend: this weekend is a special weekend in the life of our nation as we remember in a special way those in our military and armed forces who sacrificed their lives in order that we may enjoy the great freedoms we possess as American citizens. We cherish their memories forever in our hearts. Let us never take for granted the tremendous blessings and freedoms of our great nation. To all those who serve in our military and armed forces, we offer you heart-felt thanks and gratitude. To those who have lost their lives in service to our nation, may God bless them and may they rest in peace.

2. Graduation season: We offer congratulations to all the graduates in our parish who have persevered and earned their diplomas and degrees. In normal times we would celebrate a special Mass at Saint Leo honoring our graduates and their tremendous work. In a special way we honor our pastoral associate, Megan Bell, who graduated with her Masters degree in Theology from the Augustine Institute. We are so proud of Megan and all our graduates! May God continue to bless them in their new chapter of life!

3. Fr Eugene: With a heavy heart I wish to share that Fr Eugene has received a new assignment in Michigan from his Redemptorist community. He has been a tremendous blessing for Saint Leo, and will be terribly missed. At this point his new assignment will begin sometime in July. Please pray for Fr Eugene as he begins this new transition, and please pray that God will send us the right person to fill his position.

4. Saint Leo reopening: Bishop Medley has given permission for public Masses to resume in our diocese. Here at Saint Leo, we will resume with a "soft" gradual reopening as we try to work our way into the "new normal" of life in church during this pandemic. We will have a temporary revised Mass schedule as we work our way up to normal. Beginning Sunday, May 31 the revised Mass schedule at St Leo will be: Sundays 8am and 11am (bilingual), Wednesdays 6pm, and Fridays 8am. There will be no Saturday evening Masses for the time being, and no daily Mass other than Wednesday and Friday. The daily Masses on Wednesdays and Fridays will include the prayers, readings, and homily from the Sunday Mass. This means there will be 4 opportunities to hear the same Sunday Mass at various times throughout the week. In order to accommodate people with the limited seating capacity, if you are inclined to attend Mass, please attend only 1 time during the week. Again this schedule is temporary until further notice. However, there is a dispensation from the Sunday obligation until further notice. No one is required to return at this time. Please stay home if you are elderly or have medical conditions. We will have limited seating capacity at each mass, and once the capacity is reached we cannot admit more people. The diocese is also requiring everyone who attends Mass to wear their face masks for the entirety of Mass. Anyone age 2 and above, adults and children included, are required to wear their masks. If anyone cannot or will not wear their mask for Mass, they will be told to return home. Also, we will continue recording the Sunday 11am Mass and posting it on Saint Leo's Facebook and YouTube pages until further notice. Please stay tuned for more updates as they become available!

Vacation Bible School Update from Josh Stewart

The parish staff has decided to cancel VBS for summer 2020. It is very disappointing, as I know that so many people in our parish community look forward to it each year, but the health and safety of everyone involved is of the utmost importance. We look forward to seeing you at VBS 2021!

SAINT PHILIP NERI (1515-1595)

May 26th

In a shop near the Vatican, a group of Americans laughed as the shopkeeper showed off his fluent English and latest souvenir, a key ring whose papal portrait, when pressed, activated a recorded blessing. Through the shop window, two clerics scowled disapproval. The shopkeeper grunted, “They’re a very somber order who’ve left the Church. I recognize them.” “By their long robes?” an American asked. “Many in Rome wear robes,” replied the shopkeeper. “It’s their long faces!” When Philip Neri arrived in sixteenth-century Rome, there was reason to be somber. Swiss Guards had been massacred on Saint Peter’s steps defending the pope. Parts of Europe were abandoning the Church. But Philip resolved to be an “apostle of joy,” drawing especially the young to Christ—and frequent confession and Communion—by his sincere interest in their problems, prayerful example, and gentle humor. His “Oratory,” a movement as well as a place, provided recreation and devotion in a joyful atmosphere of companionship, service, and liturgy. Philip Neri challenges each of us to begin improving Church and world by changing ourselves with unfailing joy.
