456. What is the nature of the family in the plan of God? A man and a woman united in marriage form a family together with their children. God instituted the family and endowed it with its fundamental constitution. Marriage and the family are ordered to the good of the spouses and to the procreation and education of children. Members of the same family establish among themselves personal relationships and primary responsibilities. In Christ the family becomes the domestic church because it is a community of faith, of hope, and of charity.

News & Events A message from Chris Wooldridge, Chair of Saint Leo Parish Council :

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

I hope that you each are well and safe. The virus situation has changed our lives in so many ways. One of which is depriving us of our Masses and our gatherings as the people of God. We are blessed to have the Saint Leo staff and so many others who are working to keep the parish moving forward and God’s word shared.

As your Parish Council Chair I want to reassure you that your council continues their work as well. In the absence of face-to-face meetings, we are moving forward through digital means with the approval of the council constitution which acts as the guiding document for our work, and we are putting the constitution to work already. My thanks to Shawn Touney and others for driving the constitution’s development process.

To my disappointment, we have had to suspend the first phase of the strategic planning process which was to have roundtable discussions with parishioners. This process will resume as soon as practical, and we look forward to everyone's input. I am very anxious to get this restarted as I believe it will set the parish for growth well into the future.

The budget process has begun. The fiscal year for St. Leo Church begins July 1st of each year and ends June 30th of the following year. We are in the process of establishing a process by which the committees, the ministries and the administrative office will begin projecting their budget needs for the coming year’s cycle approximately 90 days before the budget must be completed. These projections will roll up to the finance and administrative committee which will take those projections, as well as estimates from the diocesan on costs, and begin preparing a pro forma budget. That budget will be presented and reviewed by the council which will consider it with Father Brandon for approval. This year will present us with some unique challenges due to the virus situation, and I want to thank in advance committee chair Sean Caldwell and his committee members, as well as all who are supporting this budgeting process, for all their hard work and attention. I want to emphasize that the work of our committees and ministries is extremely important to our mission as Catholic Christians and supporting that work both financially and through our physical participation as individuals is very important.

I do want to mention that Dr. Brian Bourke has agreed to join the Social Justice Committee with Mike Basile. I want to express my appreciation to Brian for stepping up to serve. He will be officially submitted to the council for approval next month; however he has already been working with Mike and I look forward to their good work. Brian is very capable and interested in social justice and I believe you each will agree with me that he will be a tremendously capable leader for us. I want to encourage each of us to continue to be prayerful in discerning how each of us can play a role in our parish through committee or ministry participation.

We will be working through the addition of members of our Spanish-speaking community to the council, and we will be implementing the council rotational procedures as soon as feasible. I assure you my intent is to establish membership rotation by which annually we see a sustained formal process by which new leadership rotates into the council carrying the vision of the laity and Father into practice.

I hope that you feel your council is being responsive and active. Please feel free to contact any council member if you have comments or concerns. While I cannot promise outcome, I can promise effort in addressing your interests and concerns.

SAINT CATHERINE OF SIENA (1347-1380)

April 29, 2020

Imagine the pope receiving a young woman still in her twenties who addresses him as “my sweet Christ on earth,” then orders: “Get back to Rome where you belong!” Amazingly, Gregory XI complied! Yet this was but one astonishing incident in the extraordinary life of Catherine of Siena, a truly unique medieval woman. Youngest of twenty-five children, Catherine refused marriage and became a Dominican Tertiary at sixteen, cloistering herself at home in contemplative prayer, austere penances, and mystical experiences, culminating in “spiritual espousal” to Christ. Then, incarnating the Dominican ideal of “passing on to others the fruits of contemplation,” Catherine left her solitude to care for the poor, nurse the sick, comfort the dying, and bury the dead. Increasingly renowned for converting souls and healing bodies, she was sought after to broker peace during civil wars and Church schisms. All this, and like Jesus, whom she called “my Divine Spouse,” she died at thirty-three! Four hundred letters and her spiritual classic The Dialogue inspired Paul VI to name her, together with Teresa of Ávila, the first women Doctors of the Church. —Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S.
