Food for Thought from the Desk of Fr. Joe

Dear Sisters and Brothers in the Lord: May is Mary’s month. Some perhaps have asked, "Why May?" The poet, Father Gerard

Manley Hopkins S.J. asks this question in his poem "May Magnificat,": "May is Mary’s month, and I muse

at that and wonder why."

Perhaps the answer is that, in many places, May is the month for Spring’s return of flowers. As the

flowers return we honor Mary Whom we call the "Mystical Rose."

A poem entitled "Mary’s May" by Elywn Rhyl states,

"May is Our Lady’s month with all its lovely days. May is sweet and heavenly just like Our Lady’s ways."

And of course, the name "May" is a form of Mary and is sometimes used as a "nickname" for

women named Mary and then it is spelled Mae. May devotions began during the beginning of the 1700’s in

Italy. It seems the first book of May devotions was published by an Italian Jesuit, Father Anniblae Dionisis,

about 1726. In it he explains: "When we make an offering we ought to give of our best, so that among all the

months of the year we choose the most beautiful, May, the season of flowers, which invites us to crown Mary

with the blossoms of good deeds”.

May devotions were first introduced into England about 1840 by Father Aloysius Gentili of the

Institute of Charity. To this day they involve May altars, May Crowning ceremonies and May processions.

Mary, Mother of the Church, pray for us.

Let us give our hearts and minds to the Lord this Easter Season!

Fr. Joe

Educational News...

...from the School

Dear Parishioners, Our Kindergarten took a remarkable journey this past Lenten Season. Students participated in personal sacrifice project, earning an allowance for doing chores at home. Under the direction of our Kindergarten teacher, our students held a bake sale each week to raise funds. At the conclusion of Lent, our SKS students raised over $360 in nickels, dimes and quarters. As a class, they decided to donate that money to the school family tuition fund to help children in need to afford an SKS Catholic education. In light of their tremendous success, they (kindergarteners) have set a new goal of $500 for the scholarship fund. As a Principal, I’m truly humbled by the love and kindness of our youngest students. Children helping children is ennobling to all of us. At SKS our students take their responsibilities as leaders and disciples to heart. God Bless

SKS is the Foundation for an Extraordinary Future.

A MESSAGE FROM FATHER RAPHAEL

Dear Friend of St. Kieran: Loving greeting from Nairobi!! Hope you are doing well and are in good health. Our journey of 40 days of Lent was a fruitful journey for all of us - fifteen catechumens prepared by our seminarians received Baptism and First Communion on Easter Vigil at the Kandisi Church (a sub-rural community) where I help on Sundays and feast days. My family in Uganda is doing fine. The village was shocked recently by the death of a young lady, Joyce, who died from complications after childbirth. She gave birth at home, but lost so much blood, that when rushed to the hospital (10 miles away), it was too late. She left behind a nice baby boy. For now my sister is taking care of him, and giving him cow’s milk from the project you initiated - the baby is called Kieran. I will travel to the US this summer for week-end mission appeals in various parish communities (June 5 - August 20). I will be staying in LaGrange - we shall have time for a “hot dog” or some steak. We pray that the Lord keeps you in his care. See you soon. Fr. Raphael

Parish News & Events

I am the vine, you are the branches.

When Julia’s parish sent her to Catholic Charities, her first question was, “Can you help my child?” He was three years old and still wore a diaper. He didn’t speak, but threw things. Catholic Charities set up testing that diagnosed his Autism, and accepted him into Head Start. He now uses words, and takes his teacher’s hand to go to the washroom. He shares with other children, and sits down to eat. “You helped my son so much. I can’t thank you enough.”

Rooted and grounded in love, your gift to Catholic Charities on Mother’s Day, May 13,

will bear much fruit.

FLOWERS FOR MARIAN SHRINE There are dates available throughout 2012 to purchase flowers, dedicated to a loved one, for the Marian Shrine in the Church. Call the Rectory Office for more information.
