MASS INTENTIONS FOR THE WEEK

Light a candle for your prayer intention

It can also mean a prayer. Lighting a votive candle can therefore include one or more of these inten-tions. Catholics light candles to pray for their de-ceased loves ones and the sick, for the health and welfare of family and friends, and the intentions and needs of all in the world. Lighting a candle can also be a way of strengthening one’s prayer intention and expressing one’s support for the person for whom one is praying.

Candles have long been part of Catholic churches and liturgical services. There is the Paschal or East-er candle which remains lit each year from Easter to Ascension. In addition, each day at Mass we usually see between two and six candles lit on the altar. There is also the candle that is kept burning by the tabernacle to indicate the Sacramental Presence of Christ even when no Mass is being said. As parish-ioners, you also have the opportunity to have a can-dle lit for your intention in front of the Crucifix and/or the statues of the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Joseph.

Finally, in lighting a candle we partake in the pow-erful life-giving force of Jesus’ words (John 8:12):

“I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of

life.”

We encourage a donation of $1 - $4 for the light-ing of a candle.

Let us maintain a positive outlook on reality.”

The Staff and volunteers of LINK shared the following infor-mation with us from their newsletter.

It has been a challenging two weeks since our last update. How-ever, people are reaching out to support LINK. Becca and Marc organized a food drive in their neighborhood to benefit LINK. It is acts such as this that are helping LINK put food on the shelves. In an ordinary week, LINK serves 20 families. In an extraordinary week (week of April 12 - 18) LINK deliv-ered food to 137 families (719 individuals).

Families in our communities are hungry.

No Touch, No Contact Drive Thru Food Drives.

Catholic Charities St. Lucy Food Project has always relied on generous parishioner support to stock its three food pantries (in Alexandria, Front Royal and Leesburg), and also provide food to 63 other com-munity pantries throughout the diocese. During the COVID-19 pandemic, several parishes have stepped up to host our new No Touch, No Contact Drive Thru Food Drives. When you shop for your family, please purchase extra food for our neighbors in need. Then join us at one of these Fri-day drop off drives: drive into the parish lot, and drop off non-perishable food at our waiting St. Lucy truck without getting out of the car, and practicing social distancing. • Drop off food at Herndon United Methodist Church (701 Bennett St., Herndon) - there is a container in the front of the church to put your donations inside or Christ the Re-deemer Church (46833 Harry Byrd Hwy., Sterling) - there is a container inside the front doors.

• Donate food to LINK through our AMAZON WISH LIST

- many of our member churches are closed during this time, so this is an easy way to donate food to LINK.

• Donate fruit and vegetables - our grocery stores aren't

providing as much food, so we really need fruit & vegeta-bles.

• Volunteer to deliver food for LINK.

• Volunteer to pick up food at area restaurants

• Donate funds to help provide grocery gift cards.

• Volunteer to Translate/Interpret Spanish messages.
