Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Dear Parishioners and Friends:

In the synagogue… a man with an unclean spirit cried out,

“What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you

come to destroy us? I know who you are – the Holy One of

God!” [Mark 1:23-24]

It is fascinating that an “unclean spirit” recognizes the

Lord, but the people cannot. In fact, the unclean spirit is the first

one in Mark’s gospel to proclaim Jesus as “The Holy One of

God.” But his first question is just as important: “What have you

to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth?” This is the central question of

Mark’s Gospel and we are invited to answer it. Are you ready to

come into deeper relationship with Jesus?

The past two weeks reflected on the call of his disciples.

The next two weeks reflects on the teaching of Jesus, which was

actually summed up last week: “the kingdom of God is at hand;

repent and believe the good news!” But we shall see that it is the

AUTHORITY of Jesus that is being revealed by his actions

more than his words; by this we are being taught. When Jesus

enters the room, he embodies the message of light and love.

Thus the “demons” have to leave the room, because his mission

is to reconcile. Light and darkness cannot both remain.

As winter begins to fade, it is still a season of sickness and

illness for many. Those who desire the Anointing of the Sick are

welcome to stay after Mass this weekend for prayers for healing.

Next week, because of St. Blaise Day on Saturday, after Mass

there will be another option for the blessing of the throats. The

authority of Jesus Christ is still inviting us to be healed and

formed in our faith.

This is Second Sign-Up Sunday for small groups to do a 6-

week program during Lent called Living the Eucharist. Sign-Up

cards are available in the pews and can be placed in the collec-

tion basket and you can consult the list options and sign up after

Mass in the Church Foyer.

Question of the week: Do I really expect to be changed in

some way every time I come to worship? What are the impedi-

ments that keep me from hearing God’s Word with open ears

and an open heart?

Cuarto Domingo en Tiempo Ordinario

Queridos Feligreses y Amigos:

¿Has venido a destruir-

cos y nosotros estamos invitados a contestarla.

do la Eucaristía.

abiertos?

Su pastor - P. Bob Cushing

Next Sunday is Loaves and Fishes Sunday: Please br ing non-

perishable food items in for the food pantry! We will bring them

up with the collection.

Your CCW is preparing for their annual Azalea Festival,

and we are accepting donations for our Country Store. If you

are cleaning out or have items to donate to us, we would be

delighted to accept your offer. We cannot take clothes or

electronic items, and all items must be in good clean condi-

tion. You can take your items by the parish hall, and we will

add them to the Country Store inventory.

Thank you very much for your help! Connie Interval, 912-387-9214

Future Planning: Times for Mass on Easter Sunday, April 1, have been reconfigured so that we will have an extra Mass to serve our needs better at 9 AM in English and 11 AM Bilingual followed by the usual Easter Egg Hunt for kids at 12:30.

Preparing for Lent: If you have palm

branches in your home from Palm Sun-

day services in past years, you may bring them in for their ritual burning by

February 11.

Preparación para Cuaresma: Si us-

“Thou shall NOT Chew Gum in Church!” This last week, the parish spent over $1,000 to have Serve-Pro clean the pews’ seat

cushions and all the carpeting in church and hallways. [We appreci-ate Bob Interval’s stewardship to make this happen! He also changed

the church chimes for us to enter “ordinary time.”] But they could not get all the GUM out of the cracks in the back of the seat cushions

in the pews. Chewing Gum is forbidden in Church!

A Second collection will be taken up to support our Youth

Group while they are gone on retreat to the DYC in Augusta.

Our parish community welcomes Shirley Marsh into the family of faith; last Sunday she received Baptism, Confirmation, and Holy Communion. Please pray for her many health issues.

A Word from Pope Francis: “The great danger

in today’s world, pervaded as it is by consumer-

ism, is … a complacent yet covetous heart, the

feverish pursuit of frivolous pleasures, and a

blunted conscience” (#2). “Our technological soci-

ety has succeeded in multiplying occasions of

pleasure, yet has found it very difficult to engen-

der joy” (#7). -The Joy of the Gospel

Living the Eucharist: Lent, 2018, promises to be

a special time of faith formation throughout the Diocese of Savannah. Most parishes will be participating in a parish-based renewal experience that fosters spiritual growth and discipleship by promoting “full, conscious and active participation in the Eucharist.” Living the Eucharist is the

spiritual formation program during the Lenten season over the next three years. It will help parishioners to grow in holiness and in the Church’s mission as we grow in the love of Christ in the Eucharist in a handful of different ways.

-Small groups: This is our final Sign-Up Sunday weekend for small groups to implement the program. A member of the Coordinating Team will be there for you after each Mass this weekend. Need more info? Contact Montse Diaz, Jesus Velez, or Anna Saucedo.

-Our Teenagers will have their own small groups in their PRE classes.

-Family Activity Booklets will be made available

to parents who will also be gathering once a week to share ways of enriching their family’spiritual experience of Lent.

-From Exodus to Easter: My Daily Journey through Lent is the Lenten devotional booklet available to everyone next weekend.

-The Prayer: As we begin Mass each weekend, we pray for the success of this renewal program as we share now “a Prayer for Living the Eucharist.” (Please do not let children destroy them!)

Ayudará a

Contacte a

Fr. Bob’s 40th Anniversary of Ordination is next weekend. It will be a 3-day celebration (of “BIBLICAL Proportions” he said!): YOU ARE INVITED either next Saturday night Feb 3 with most of our English-speaking community to share in the Pot-luck Supper in the Parish Hall after Mass with a little program of commemora-tion… or on Sunday night – February 4 – the party is repeated in Spanish after the 6 PM Mass. On Monday night, Feb 5, our Bishops, clergy and religious of the Diocese are coming to celebrate with his family and friends from around the country. The Mass is open for

us all to enjoy but the Banquet afterwards is by invitation only because of the limited number of seats. CCW and the Knights are being asked to pitch in assisting in the details of hospitality, especially for the out of town folk on Monday.

Question: What do you give a priest on his 40th

Anniversary of Ordination? Answer: A note or card ex-

pressing how you have awakened to your own faith in God, via fuller participation in the life of the Church and the sacraments, and thanking him for his part in that. [One

token of appreciation that he enjoys is an AMAZON CARD!]
