First Reading : 1 Kings 3.5-12 At Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night; and God said, ‘Ask what I should give you.’ And Solomon said, ‘You have shown great and steadfast love to your servant my father David, because he walked before you in faithfulness, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart towards you; and you have kept for him this great and steadfast love, and have given him a son to sit on his throne today. And now, O LORD my God, you have made your servant king in place of my father David, although I am only a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in. And your servant is in the midst of the people whom you have chosen, a great people, so numerous they cannot be numbered or counted. Give your servant therefore an understanding mind to govern your people, able to discern between good and evil; for who can govern this your great people?’ It pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked this. God said to him, ‘Because you have asked this, and have not asked for yourself long life or riches, or for the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern what is right, I now do according to your word. Indeed I give you a wise and discerning mind; no one like you has been before you and no one like you shall arise after you.’

This is the Word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God.

The Collects, Post Communion Prayer, Readings and Music for the 8.00am, 9.00am, 11.45am and 6.00pm services

The Collect for The Sixth Sunday after Trinity Merciful God, you have prepared for those who love you such good things as pass our understanding: pour into our hearts such love toward you that we, loving you in all things and above all things, may obtain your promises, which exceed all that we can desire; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Post Communion for The Sixth Sunday after Trinity God of our pilgrimage, you have led us to the living water: refresh and sustain us as we go forward on our journey, in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord.

Psalm 119.129-136 129. Thy testimonies are wonderful * therefore doth my soul keep them. 130. When thy word goeth forth * it giveth light and understanding unto the simple. 131. I opened my mouth, and drew in my breath * for my delight was in thy commandments. 132. O look thou upon me, and be merciful unto me * as thou usest to do unto those that love thy Name. 133. Order my steps in thy word * and so shall no wickedness have dominion over me. 134. O deliver me from the wrongful dealings of men * and so shall I keep thy commandments. 135. Shew the light of thy countenance upon thy servant * and teach me thy statutes. 136. Mine eyes gush out with water * because men keep not thy law. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son * and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be * world without end. Amen.

Second Reading: Romans 8.26-end The Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. And God, who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit inter-cedes for the saints according to the will of God. We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn within a large family. And those whom he predestined he also called; and those whom he called he also justified; and those whom he justified he also glorified. What then are we to say about these things? If God is for us, who is against us? He who did not withhold his own Son, but gave him up for all of us, will he not with him also give us everything else? Who will bring any charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is to condemn? It is Christ Jesus, who died, yes, who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us. Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, ‘For your sake we are being killed all day long; we are accounted as sheep to be slaughtered.’ No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.

This is the Word of the Lord. All Thanks be to God.

Gospel Reading: 13.31-33,44-52 Jesus put before the crowd another parable: ‘The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that someone took and sowed in his field; it is the smallest of all the seeds, but when it has grown it is the greatest of shrubs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.’ He told them another parable: ‘The kingdom of heaven is like yeast that a woman took and mixed in with three measures of flour until all of it was leavened. The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which someone found and hid; then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls; on finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it. Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net that was thrown into the sea and caught fish of every kind; when it was full, they drew it ashore, sat down, and put the good into baskets but threw out the bad. So it will be at the end of the age. The angels will come out and separate the evil from the righteous and throw them into the furnace of fire, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. Have you understood all this?’ They answered, ‘Yes.’ And he said to them, ‘Therefore every scribe who has been trained for the kingdom of heaven is like the master of a household who brings out of his treasure what is new and what is old.’

This is the Gospel of the Lord. All Praise to you, O Christ.

    Anthem Pater noster (Igor Stravinsky)

Pater noster, qui es in caelis, sanctificetur nomen tuum; Adveniat regnum tuum. Fiat voluntas tua sicut in caelo et in terra. Panem nostrum quotidianum da nobis hodie, Et dimitte nobis debita nostra, sicut et nos dimittimus debitoribus nostris. Et ne nos inducas in tentationem; sed libera nos a malo. Amen. Our Father, which art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done, in earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation; but deliver us from evil. Amen.

The SJC Choir take their summer break…but the ‘band plays on’ On Sundays, during our Cathedral Choir’s well-earned August furlough, we are extending a warm and grateful welcome to Die Konzertisten, a choir well-known to us at St John’s. Welcome to St John’s Visitors are always welcome at our services. If you are new to Hong Kong and/or St John’s, do make yourself known at the Welcome Table where you can find someone who will help with information about our life and ministry here.

After Service Refreshments Refreshments are served after the 9.00am service in the Li Hall.

    Notices

Clergy Dean Matthias is away on his biennial home leave from 2nd July to 2nd August. During his absence, The Revd Will Newman will be the ministry coordinator from 2nd to 16th July followed by The Revd Catherine Graham from 17th July to 2nd August. The Revd Peter Koon and Mrs Viola Ip, the Cathedral Administrator, will be the coordinators for keeping the grounds and facilities of the Cathedral in good order. The entire clergy team, with the trustees, will ensure the smooth running of the Cathedral ministry. Please pray for the Dean and his family for a time of safe travelling and refreshment.

The Revd Nigel Gibson is on his annual leave in the United Kingdom and Italy until 6th August. During this period the Revd Robert Martin will be looking after the worship at Emmanuel Church, Pokfulam.

Guest Preacher The Revd Rob Gillion, Rector of Holy Trinity and St Saviour Upper Chelsea has been elected to the role of Bishop of Riverina in the Province of New South Wales, Australia. He will be enthroned at Saint Alban's Cathedral, Griffith, New South Wales, on Friday 15th August 2014.

Fr Rob originally trained at Salisbury and Wells Theological College and was ordained priest in 1984. He then spent time serving in the Dioceses of Norwich, Southwark and Hong Kong before returning to London in 1998 as The Bishop of Kensington's Officer for Evangelism.

Fr Rob's time as Rector of the Parish of Holy Trinity and St Saviour has seen a significant growth in diversity within the congregation and a complementary expression of mission, ministry and worship across the two churches.

His new position presiding over Riverina will see him embrace new challenges and opportunities, caring for clergy and parishes across a large diocese with a scattered population. Rob is following in his maternal grandfather's footsteps, who travelled to Australia as a missionary priest in 1928.

Minutes that Matter You can hear the Revd Will Newman on ‘Minutes that Matter’ on RTHK4 (97.6FM) every Tuesday morning in July at 9.50am. This month Will is speaking about Peace and Reconciliation, Grace and Forgiveness. These Christian virtues may be much needed in Hong Kong at this time.

As a way to help us understand our Cathedral Community and its ministry, there will be a feature article in the Pew Bulletin every fourth Sunday of the month.

DO YOU WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT ST JOHN’S ?

Welcome to St John’s Cathedral. My name is James Choo and I would like to share with you my life experience as a Christian serving our Trinitarian God at this Cathedral.

Unlike most worshippers in this cathedral, I am sort of a new comer to the faith. I still remember vividly that I was baptized and confirmed on St Peter’s day, 29th June 2008. Before that I was a very devoted Buddhist. I met our Lord when I was in the hospital and from then on my experience with Christ is very Pentecostal. Gospel of St John 15.16 Jesus said, “You did not choose me but I chose you. And I appointed you to go and bear fruit, fruit that will last…” When God called and chose his servant he really meant it. I thought by attending the Tuesday evening bible fellowship is good enough for me to be in the faith; but fellow brothers and sisters called and asked me to join EfM. “EfM, what is that?” “Education for Ministry for lay people.” “But I don’t have time.” “Don’t worry, no need to do assignment, just come and join.” With that, like swimming in milky water, I was somehow pushed to flip through the entire bible page by page, not sure how much I really read in two years: Year 1 - Old Testament and Year 2 - New Testament. Year 3 and Year 4 are Church History and Current Church respectively.

“James, come to be a server and help out at the altar.” I was asked. “What is a server?” “Just come on Sunday morning at 7.30am, I’ll be in the vestry waiting for you.” “So early…” I thought and there goes my Saturday late night out social time. Looking back, I never regretted being called to serve our Lord Jesus. Psalm 103.2-5 “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and do not forget all his benefits – who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the Pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies you with good as long as you live so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.” Asked any servers serving at the altar, he or she will be able to share with you how energized they’re when serving the Lord.
