Year 10 Mock exam: “Events” NB. You do not need to print this handout, just read through it and begin the task Assessment Objective 1: Develop ideas through investigations, demonstrating critical understanding of sources” Task: Produce a scrap book based on current events. NB: This task should take a minimum of four hours (equivalent of two lessons and two homeworks), but you can continue adding to your scrap book throughout the exam period To start your investigation for the mock exam, you are asked to compile a scrap book (and/or journal) based on current events. This task will provide you with a starting point from which you can investigate the theme of events in a format that can be used as a resource from which to develop ideas. You should begin by collecting newspapers and magazines, both from previous days/weeks and also during the coming weeks. Cut out any pictures and text that refer to what is currently going on in the UK and world-wide, which attract your attention. Find a sketch book or (old) exercise book that you can use to start a scrap book. Begin to arrange the pictures and text across single or double pages and stick them down. Collage techniques There is no right or wrong way to begin this, so find a book and start collecting and sticking text and images as soon as you can. Below are examples of newspaper scrap book pages showing different collage techniques to help you get started.

Begin to arrange the pictures and text across single or double pages and stick them

down.Collage techniques There is no right or wrong way to begin this, so find a book and start collecting and sticking text and images as soon as you can. Below are examples of newspaper scrap book pages showing different collage techniques to help you get started.

Example 1 Example 2This technique shows a more creative way of arranging samples of text so that they do not simply appear as horizontal lines that read from left to right. You should consider arranging text following vertical and diagonal directions. You could use a headline and/or image as a focal point and arrange images and smaller printed text around it,

In this example, a collage of newspaper cuttings has been produced in the same way as shown in example 1.The page is further developed by adding more samples of text and images, which are arrangedt to produce a ‘second’ layer. The images and text used for the ‘second’ layer can be stuck on pieces of card to raise the surface of the page and provide a more tactile quality to your work.

Year 10 Mock exam: “Events”

As you expand your scrap book you might wish to consider alternative collage techniques in which you can be more creative and make your pages appear eye catching (see below)Example 3 Example 4

In this example, newspaper cuttings are collaged in a more abstract way.By tearing the cuttings so that only fragments of text and images appear, the emphasis is now upon a design showing shape, line and colour.

In this example, newspaper cuttings are combined with patterns and different media. You might consider cutting strips of pattern or colour from packaging, labels, sweet wrappers, wrapping paper or fabric.

Points to remember. Your scrap book is part of your investigation research for your mock exam, so make

sure there is clear sense of purpose behind collecting different images and text from newspapers/magazines.

Keep in mind the exam theme, making sure that your scrap book pages refer to an event or aspects of event (even if you go for a more abstract technique)

You illustrate critical understanding by being able to show the use of a scrap book to record how the media (newspapers) use text and images to report ‘events’.

Over time you can extra cuttings and hand written notes to your existing collages. You can also re-visit pages and use high-lighter pens, coloured pencils or felt-tipped

pens to add colour
