A Geographical Study of Rwanda. This term we would be comparing Rwanda with our local area. In February Mrs Marsh visited Rwanda. She took lots of photos of houses, people and food. This week we are going to spend some time comparing homes and life styles of children and their families in Rwanda with your lifestyles. This week we are going to look at where our food comes from and look at a typical meal that a child in Rwanda would eat.

Some children in Rwanda eat their main meal at school every day others eat their main meal on an evening and it might be the only meal they get each day.

Here are some of the meals Mrs Marsh ate when she visited Rwanda

How does the food you eat compare to the food children in Rwanda eat?Do you know what all of the ingredients are?Cassava: type of root vegetable similar to sweet potatoSorghum: type of flowering plant from the grass family which is grown for cereal.

Task 3 We are going to take a closer look at where our food comes from. There is a video that you might want to watch, it explains about our carbon footprint and why we should be thinking about where our food comes from. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Opt06QF9WYLook at some of the food you have in your fridge or your kitchen cupboards. Where have they come from?

You could even look at all of the ingredients from one meal and see how far you food comes from just to make one meal.

Ingredients for pancakesLook at the map of the world. Can plot where you food has come from onto the map?

How far has your food travelled? It is quite amazing isn’t it?Task 4How can you and your family make a difference to save food having to travel so far?For example: I grow my own potatoes, onions, carrots and beetroot every year. This year I have also planted tomatoes, peppers, cauliflower, broccoli, peas and beans. I also have my own blueberry bushes. (I don’t have a very big vegetable garden, quite a few things are in pots). When I go shopping I only buy meat that is produced in the UK or I visit the local butchers and I try not to buy fruit that is out of season in the UK.If I buy fruit from around the world I look for the Fair trade symbol so I know that the people who work hard to grow the food are paid properly.Write your ideas here!

Food in RwandaPeople in Rwanda eat food that is grown locally. They eat very little meat if they live in the countryside but in the cities there is more chicken and beef available. Many of us are very lucky to have food available to us and to be able to eat 3 healthy meals a day. Knowing where our food comes from is very

important as it can help reduce our carbon footprint or it can help farmers and their workers survive in other countries. Next time we will be looking at what makes a healthy balanced meal.
