2020 has thrown the world as we know it into turmoil.

TASK 1: LIFTING LOCK DOWN RULE BOOK

We're bound by rules now, because of Covid-19. For this task, imagine you are Boris Johnson, what rules would you write for everyone, to make sure it is SAFE when LOCK-DOWN is lifted. Make sure you explain clearly the how and why of each rule you put in place.

TASK 2: A ‘BIG’ CHAT session:

First watch and listen to: ‘TOM FOOLERY – A corona virus story’ WITH someone/ everyone in the family.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GvuCX4W6Xrg&feature=youtu.be

Think about this clip – the message; consider the news, our impact as humans on our planet ( the environment - land, oceans, skies, wild life; on us as humans – ourselves, each other in our societies, our health, our futures)

CHAT and JOT DOWN ALL your thoughts – it may even be in a spider diagram. You need 10 points recorded as a minimum.

YOUR TASKS

TASK 3: Listen to the song, by the late, great Michael Jackson (Heal the world). Google: Michael Jackson - Heal the World 2020

Put yourself into role as 'healer' of our world (eg: a doctor/ medical person or a scientist). What would your instruction/s to people in this world be right now?

Yes, we're suffering at the cruel hands of Covid-19, BUT... think more about what we're doing to the world, through how we live? Is this virus our 'wake up call'?

There are many tales about the world healing while ‘man’ is locked down. How many examples can you find and tell us about?

Write a report on what your research uncovers. From this information you must make recommendations on how we as humans can adjust our ways to continue healing the world.

Begin with 'It's May, 2020 and we have to act...'

TASK 4: Write a newspaper report about the virus and ending lockdown.Required Features

HEADLINEBig and boldCapital lettersShort and Punchy – using powerful wordsCatch attention – accusing / question / shock tacticsAlliteration or word play (puns - double meanings)

OPENING SENTENCE / PARAGRAPHTells main point of the story.Answers who, where, what, when and why?Packed with information. Is your opening sentence or two the whole first paragraph?

FURTHER PARAGRAPHSDo your paragraphs become less and less important?Include facts.Include opinions.Have you used a quotation?Have you used reported speech?Have you given viewpoints from different witnesses? Last paragraph is the least important.Have you used the correct formal language style?

TASK 4: Requirements

To succeed you must be able to tick each of these boxes above in the list of required features.

Use the example below, along with your study guides to lead you in your writing and what is required.

Can you recognise the required features of journalistic writing in this report? The colour coding should help you to identify each.

Who, what, where, when and why. Fact, opinion, a quote and reported speech.

VAN DRIVER HITS CYCLIST

THE DRIVER of a van that struck a 64-year-old cyclist taking part in his 12th Land's End to John O'Groats run, who had been retrieving a folder from the floor just beforehand, Truro court heard this week. Benjamin Nathan Walters, aged 30 of Elm Road, Teignmouth, pleaded guilty to driving without due care and attention and was fined £500 and banned from driving for four months.

Mr Stephens, the cyclist, suffered injuries to his back and shoulder. He was taken by air ambulance to Truro hospital. Irene Parnell, prosecuting, said, "Mr Stephens was hit from behind, propelled into a hedge, and landed face down." A number of witnesses had seen the van suddenly veer to the nearside and collide with Mr Stephens, who was not wearing a cycle helmet but had on a bright yellow reflective jacket.

Brian Shore, a friend, said that it had just been one of those awful accidents. Ben Walters was a good driver and had not been speeding and had never been involved in an accident before. He worked as a driver, delivering mail order catalogues and for the past 10 years had driven 50,000 miles a year.

TASK 1: LIFTING LOCK DOWN RULE BOOKIts 2020 and the rule book has been

thrown out of the window. We’re bound by rules because of COVID-19. If you were BORIS JOHNSON, what rules

would you make, to ensure everyone is safe, when lock down is lifted? How

would they be implemented and controlled or monitored?
