  • From the desk of the Headmaster

I, however, will not ponder on this thought and will revert to being thankful. We are really thankful here at St George’s to all our parents who we respectfully know are doing their very best to allow their children the privilege of attending a school like ours.

We are thankful for the wonderful boys and girls that we interact with daily. We are very thankful to Mr Pitsiladi and our Governing Council for the many hours and expertise

offered, as well as the decisions made by them to make St George’s Prep the best we can possibly be.

We also need to thank the Prep Senior Management Team; Mr Craig Carter, Mr Anton Peltenburg, Mrs Mary Daley, Mrs Shareen Combe, Mrs Junene du Toit and Mrs Di van Heerden, for the effective manner in which they lead their various departments and their whole-hearted commitment to the school. To Mr Andrew Stamper, who often

hears the things that no-one else gets to hear, my deepest thanks for his support and advice this past year! I would also like to thank my wife, Rosemary, for her unfailing support and for having to hear all the things even Mr Stamper doesn’t hear!

We, too, are thankful to Miss Gill Pattison, Mrs Dawn Berry and Miss Lanette Pienaar for ensuring the smooth running of our Marketing, Admin and Finance Departments. I know I drive them crazy on many occasions, but I would be lost without them. Thank you ladies!

To Mr Simon Jefferys, Mr Ryan Hartel, all the support staff and to our aftercare ladies, often still here when everyone one else is home, thank you for all your hard work.

Mrs Di Allen, Mrs Jennifer Henderson, and Mrs Anusha Sewsunker: thank you for all the hours spent in our clothing shop and second hand clothing shop, ensuring all our Preppies are well kitted out! Our Moms Who Care group which holds our school in prayer continues to meet bi-weekly and for this we are very appreciative.

Thanks also need to be given to Mrs Kelly Naidoo, our PA Chair, and Mrs Chandré West, her Vice-Chair, and the entire PA committee who really have worked selflessly this past year. We are thankful to all our class parents who I am pretty confident will relish deleting that WhatsApp Group after this Prize-Giving!

Good Morning Mrs Mary-Lou Emslie, our special guest, Mr Peter Pitsiladi, Chair of our Board of Trustees, to all our Board of Governors present, Mr John Alexander from Theodor Herzl, parents and most importantly, boys and girls of St George’s Preparatory.

With the recent Black Fridays that have hit our shores, I must say I found it rather disturbing that on one day, Thanksgiving Day, an entire day is given to being thankful for what you have and the very next day, the lesser virtues of greed and gluttony are displayed rather vividly across retail vendors across the world on Black Friday. I guess this is another modern era disconnect!

  • From the desk of the Headmaster

We have been very fortunate to have been able to invest back into our school with many improvements, which you will find mentioned in Mr Peter Pitsiladi’s report, and we also look forward to further developments next year as we shift our focus to our classrooms and the academic curriculum. I have always believed that a school is more than just its bricks and mortar. It is the people within our walls that are the most treasured assets. Finally, to all our teachers: teaching is a calling, a passion, a vocation and not just a job. Thank you, to each and every one of you for the profound difference and impact you make here on a daily basis! As Henry Adams once said, ‘A teacher affects eternity and one can never tell where their influence stops’.

My default mode over the past two prize-giving speeches has been to revert to some of the brilliant speakers I am privileged to hear at the conferences the Board allows me to attend. I will deviate from that slightly this year and use this only as an opening to my real message today that does come from two brilliant speakers. At the recent ICP (International Confederation of Principals) Conference held in Cape Town, I was lucky enough to hear Vice-Chancellor Adam Habib speak for a second time. He mentioned during his speech this year ‘the world has never been as divided as much as it is right now!’ This remark obviously stirred much debate and discussion. But it is not Prof Habib that I will quote or speak about today.

During our recent Public Speaking Competition, I was moved by the words of two of our Grade 7 girls, Kimaya and Tanika. It is at times like this when I realise the profound influence both a school and a parent have on moulding, developing, encouraging and helping our young boys and girls. Two particularly difficult issues have been at the forefront of my mind and thinking this year, the first being that of transformation and diversity, particularly in the school environment. For me the greatest challenge in all of this is not the legal, compliance or equity aspect of it, but rather the cold truth of whether we as a school are accepting of all diversity or whether we merely assimilate our pupils. At this point I wish to share a few quotes from one of our Grade 7’s speeches that was actually originally written as an essay last year:

‘It makes me very sad to know that people all over the world cannot love and respect each other. Destroying children’s homes, families and schools brings sadness and fear for one another.’

She then goes on to say, ‘If we respected each other’s way of life, we would think twice about bombing a country and its people. If only we could remember that if I hurt another person, I hurt myself. We are all one in our differences.

As humans we are the same, but different, in the way we think about things. This difference is good when we can see that there are other ways of looking at things. Not just my way. This makes the world I live in very interesting.

Just imagine a world where all human beings had the same talents, think about things in the same way, looked the same, dressed the same and ate the same food. What a dull and boring world that would be.

So being different from others is great. To be with people who are different forces us to be sharp and open our minds to greater possibilities. Differences in humans make the world fun.’

She then continues, ‘All religions of the world preach about love for one another. In the end we are more similar than different. We all want the same things in life like a family for acceptance, a house for protection and food to live.

I have hope that the world will someday be like my family: where you will find less hate and more love, less tearing apart and more coming together.

Human beings are the same. We all are born, we live and then we die.’

Wow! What a powerful message she shared. Professor Jonathan Jansen, too, has written about celebrating our sameness rather than our differences.

My other niggle, for lack of a better word, is in and around competition and the ideas and the debate around both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, particularly for prep school pupils. Again, here I was, bowled over to hear the thoughts of one of our very own Grade 7 Preppies.

Her opening line, after a brief dialogue, was this: ‘I’m here to warn

    4

  • From the desk of the Headmaster

you of a dangerous dark presence, we see hints of it now, but its presence will become overbearing as we progress into high school and young adult life. It makes your pulse race with fear, causes you stress, to have sleepless nights, it steals your happiness and health and pushes you to the extreme…What is this force…no it’s not extra-terrestrial beings, terrorists or the plague…

    Our enemy is called PERFECTION!’

What followed was as impressive: ‘The culture of overachieving and the quest for perfection has escalated so drastically over the years that it has altered what it means to be a student. School has now become a competitive frenzy, if I may say that, where imperfection is considered a failure. Students certainly feel judged by the grades they attain and not fundamentally by who they are. Striving for these impossibly high standards can cause stress, anxiety and even suicide.

How can we save ourselves, appreciate your achievements whatever it is, and your short comings, we can learn from both. Mistakes are what make us human and allow us to grow. Striving for excellence motivates us but striving for perfection destroys us…in the process of pleasing others we lose

our way. When you feel the need to be perfect…stand up and say ‘NO MORE’...’

Thank you Tanika and Kimaya, you are now officially on my list of great speakers!

Moms and Dads, Boys and Girls, my final message this morning will hopefully echo some of the sentiments of these two insightful Grade 7s. We have recognised each and every one of you today but remember this: You are more than the awards and accolades you receive. Your differences and even your weaknesses make you who you are. There is more to you than achievements that are recognised as there, too, are many achievements that go unnoticed. There is more to you than the qualification behind your name, or the blazer you wear and, as Dr Seuss said, and I do believe Mr Pitsiladi used some of these quotes last year as well:

‘Today you are you, that is truer than true. There is no one alive who is youer than you.’

    And for our Grade 7s:

‘Today was good. Today was fun. Tomorrow is another one.’

‘You’ll be on your way up! You’ll be seeing great sights! You’ll join the high fliers who soar to high heights!’Thank you!

  • My name is Peter, and I am the chairman of the School Council at St George’s. Mr Hall and I, together with the School Council, work as a team to make St George’s the best possible school for each and every one of you!

I made some promises to you last year which we have fulfilled by investing in the infrastructure, the building and equipment and the people: your teachers, helpers and cooks. We have built a multi-million rand sports facility which I hope everyone is enjoying. We have upgraded many of the bathrooms and will have completed them all by early next year.

Fibre has eventually arrived in our area and the WiFi project

is underway which will give you top speed on your iPads and computers.

The pool heat pumps have been replaced and an improved system of maintaining our pool has been put in place to ensure it is always warm and clean. The old school buses were sold and we have replaced them with brand new ones, so now you are riding around in style.

I am sure you are all wondering what is happening next year. While you are enjoying your well-deserved December holiday, we are performing major upgrades to the Grade 1 and 7 classrooms. They are going to be state-of-the-art and create a collaborative environment.

The remaining classrooms will be upgraded during the course of 2018 and no school in this city will match the facilities we will have! This is going to cost several million rand and will be financed by a combination of school funds and a donation programme which will be introduced next year.

We are upgrading the kitchen facilities to improve the standards of food preparation. The school will be painted and the roof repaired.

The school is currently in talks with a number of stakeholders to upgrade the Union Cricket Ground facilities which will become a 2019 project. As you can see, a great deal is happening at our wonderful school and there is much to look forward to in 2018.

As the School Council, there is much that can be done to make St George’s even better. Your teachers contribute a great deal, but the biggest secret of all is that each and every one of you has more power than any of us to make St George’s the absolute best it can be.

My son is nine years old, and for his birthday this year, he received a book called Wonder. It’s about a little boy who was born with facial birth defects. In the words of August, the main character: ‘I won’t describe what I look like. Whatever you’re thinking, it’s probably worse.’ The book is about Auggie, and his experience of joining a mainstream school, just like St George’s, after being schooled at home until he was ten years old.

Good Morning to the parents, Mr Alex Hall, staff, and the boys and girls of St George’s Preparatory School.

    GOVERNING SCHOOL COUNCIL CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

    Chairman’s Report

  • Imagine August is the new boy in your class. Although there may not be a boy that looks like August in your class next year, or ever, we all have a little August in us. Something that makes us feel shy, or embarrassed, something we wish we could change about ourselves. Maybe we are really slow at running, or bad at maths, or maybe we hate our hair, or the way we smile. Maybe we hate that we are so tall, or we think we are too short. Growing up is hard. Being grown-up is hard, but being kind to one another can make all the difference. Being kind is the difference. It works. Every single time.

    To quote from the book:

‘The best way to measure how much you’ve grown isn’t by inches or the number of laps you can now run around the track, or even

your grade point average - though those things are important, to be sure. It’s what you’ve done with your time, how you’ve chosen to spend your days, and whom you’ve touched this year. That, to me, is the greatest measure of success.’The next quote is by Mr Tushman, the headmaster at Auggie’s school. He is almost as wise as Mr Hall and had the following message for his pupils:

‘If every person in this room made it a rule that wherever you are, whenever you can, you will try to act a little kinder than is necessary

    - the world really would be a better place. And if you do this, if you act just a little kinder than is necessary, someone else, somewhere, someday, may recognise in you, in every single one of you, the face of God.’

This book has so much wisdom in it. Whether you are 9 or 90, it reminds us of what is important and how much being kind is worth. We cannot be the best at everything, sometimes we may feel like we are not really good at anything, but remember, we can always be kind. Being kind really can change the world, even if it’s just your own small world, like the one you have at St George’s.

Today we celebrate your achievements and all your hard work. Well done to each and every one of you. Mr Hall, your teachers and your School Council are all very proud of you.

To the Grade 7s. Thank you for helping to make St George’s a wonderful school . I am sure that the foundation that you have received here will stand you in good stead in your future. Be brave and be kind. Good luck!

  • As adults, we all know that school is only a small stepping stone in our lives. To our children living it, it is their entire world and, as parents, we are privileged to be a part of this beautiful journey with our children.

The St George’s Parents’ Association strives, not only to raise funds to enhance our children’s overall experience at the school, but also to create opportunities for us as parents to have fun with our children and strengthen social ties with other families, thus making this journey richer and easier.

We have had a busy year: the Family Camp Out, Founders Day weekend, Music Trivia, Athletics Days, Spring Music Concert and Celebrating the Arts Exhibition were some of the main events, each creating its own unique memories. As a community, we are thankful that we have had the opportunity to spend these fun times together.

I want to take the time to thank the parents who are the ones working in the tuck shop, manning the bar and making sure that everything runs smoothly behind the scenes during functions and events. These parents are part of our Parents’ Association and they volunteer their time to make sure that all of us can enjoy these events with our children. Most of our volunteers are working parents and we know the sacrifices you have to make to be a part of this association and to give up your limited free time to help out.

I am looking forward to 2018 and all the opportunities it holds. The Parents’ Association has a very exciting events calendar lined up and we are looking forward to your support in the year to come.

Mrs Barbara Heydenrych, Aftercare Assistant, left the Prep at the end of February 2017 to head up the Aftercare at Beechwood Pre-Prep in Summerstrand.

Mrs Irene Perry retired at the end of 2017. Mrs Perry has been the Aftercare Facilitator since 2013 and under her guidance we have watched the Aftercare grow and become an important part of Prep school life.

We also said farewell to Ms Anna Sliwinski, who has taught German at the Prep since 2013. Anna also assisted with additional English for our foreign language pupils. She will be missed and we wish her well with her full-time appointment at Theodor Herzl.

Mr Kwanele Matshaya, Support Staff member, left us in August 2017 for Cape Town.

Mr Mbali Mtana, Senior Prep isiXhosa and Grade 6 teacher, takes up a position at Grey College in Bloemfontein. Whilst Mbali had only been with us for two years, his presence certainly has been felt and we wish him everything of the best.

At the end of Term One Mrs Julia de Meillon and her family left South Africa to start a new life in Scotland. Julia had been with us for ten years and became Head of our Music Department in 2011. Julia’s creativity, caring nature and Musical Revues will be sorely missed. Her

contribution to the Prep Senior Management Team has also been invaluable. We wish the de Meillon family all the best in their exciting adventure.

Mr William Fono Storm joined the Prep in 1996 as a gardener. For many years William was the only male support staff member at the Prep and assisted Mr Jan Immelman in the gardens and with small handyman tasks around the school. After 23 years, William has decided that it is time to retire and spend time tending his own gardens and looking after his small livestock. Thank you, William, for your service to the St George’s family.

Sadly, we have had to say farewell to Mrs Mary-Lou Emslie at the end of the fourth term. Mrs Tess Jennings paid a fine tribute to her at the Junior Prep prize-giving, and her words speak for all of us at St George’s : ‘Mrs Emslie has served faithfully at St George’s for 26 years. She has been involved both in the classroom and has also spent many hours on the sport field. Mrs Emslie has given so much to our school and touched the lives of so many pupils and their parents. What some of you may not know, is that Mrs Emslie taught me when I was 10 years old. She then went on to coach me in hockey for three years in a row, and now, as we end our time together, I have been blessed to have her teach my son in his Grade 7 year at the Prep. Mrs Emslie will be leaving us today as

she embarks on a new and exciting adventure at Heatherbank, a farm school which has been very close to her heart for many years. We have no doubt she will continue to nurture and grow many more children and make a difference in their lives, as she has done in ours. Mrs Emslie, you have been my teacher, my coach, my colleague, my mentor and my friend.’ We will miss you!

  • The near future will also see St George’s Prep and surrounding areas moving over from ADSL to fibre which will improve our connectivity dramatically. In keeping up with today’s growing technology, the final roll out of installing Windows 10 was finally completed. The entire school is now running on the latest system that Windows offers.

As a registered school using the Knowledge Network® program, we currently have six qualified KNET® teachers and will be welcoming two more in the Pre-Prep next year. The KNET® program continues to benefit pupils by training them to use the Microsoft suite from Grade 000 through to Grade 7. Pupils learn skills that are needed to cope in an IT-dominant world and, at the same time, use their creativity and spatial thinking to design and create their work on the computer.

We were also very excited to have Readers Are Leaders® installed in one of our computer labs. This program was developed by the Four Blind Mice Studio and allows pupils to improve their reading skills, comprehension, grammar and vocabulary in both English and Afrikaans. Pupils can progress at their own pace and slowly become more confident in their reading and language skills. The use of iPads from Grades 5-7 has provided many benefits to all over the past year. Google Apps for Education allows for a more interactive and exciting learning environment. It has helped save time and paper through its wonderful tool of creating and distributing assignments via Google Classroom.  This certainly will be an area of growth in the years to come and we look forward to seeing the staff and pupils connecting and collaborating via this medium.

With the recent purchase of MyCyberWall® (online resource for all learning areas), content and further lessons, activities and resources will be just a click away for all our pupils.

At St George’s we have been very fortunate to have staff members who are always excited to immerse themselves in changes in education and who are willing to try new things. A coding club was started for the senior phases and, with the purchase of two Sphero® balls, we began teaching pupils how to code the robotic balls to move in certain ways and up and down obstacles.  The IT department has worked hard this year in trying to keep up with current educational technological trends and equipment and we continue to aim at providing a quality IT education for all our pupils at St George’s Prep.

  • We had a very rewarding start to the year when a number of pupils were honoured at the annual Showtime Awards Ceremony. Our 2016 production of The Wizard of Oz won no fewer than twelve of the major awards, including Best Female Singer in a Musical, Best Actor in a Musical, Best Animal Portrayal, Best Supporting Actress in a Musical, Best Actress in a Musical, and Show of the Year.

Twenty-one of our Junior and Senior Prep pupils participated

in the internationally recognised Trinity College of London Practical Examination this year. Our Spring Concert provided the ideal showcase to display some of the exam work, which featured performances of excerpts of songs and monologues from musicals and plays, as well as some thought-provoking poetry.

A number of our drama pupils also represented our school at the annual Kids and Baby Expo at the Boardwalk. Some were interviewed on Kingfisher FM prior to the expo

and were wonderful ambassadors for our school.

The Spotlight Drama Group was well attended in the afternoons, with eighty pupils from Grade 1 – 7 gaining confidence and experience through a variety of drama activities. The year ended off with the annual Showcase performance where pupils displayed some of the work done throughout the year. Both evenings were well supported by our St George’s family and friends.

  • Another annual reading event of note is the Kids’ Lit Quiz. Both of our teams fared well in the Eastern Cape round of this international quiz, finishing in second and fourth positions out of 21 teams from 13 schools in the region. The quizmaster, Wayne Mills, travels from New Zealand each year to test children on their knowledge of children’s literature.

Not only is the library in weekly use by children from Grade 1 to Grade 7, but this year Mrs Combe

has also brought classes from the Pre-Prep to have a special story time here. In addition to reading for pleasure and changing books, the information skills taught have increasingly included the use of iPads, helping our older pupils to navigate their way on the digital information highway.

The library is open at first break from Tuesday to Friday and thanks must be given to the monitors who are always willing to assist at this time.

    LIBRARYMrs Rosemarie Roth

Our reading week, held in September, was a highlight on the library calendar, with buddy reading across the grades, the ever-popular dress-as-a-book-character day, a pop-up bookshop and the creation of colourful bunting depicting favourite books, which has brightened up the library.

  • MUSICMrs Junene du Toit‘Music gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything’ – Plato

These words by Plato give direction to what we aim to achieve in the Music Department. It is the goal to which we constantly strive. Knowing that music enriches the lives of our young musicians, we hope to create a happy, safe and fulfilling environment for our pupils. The first term ended with a farewell performance by the Senior Choir for Mrs Julia de Meillon. The choir’s rendition of ‘Irish Blessing’ expressed our wishes for her in her future endeavours.

The next event on our calendar was the annual Band Camp which once again took place at Assegaai Valley. The camp provided an opportunity for intensive rehearsal, but also allowed for team building. Highlights included a hike, a scavenger hunt and the tradition of making s’mores around the bonfire. We entered music pupils for external examinations with both the Royal Schools of Music and Trinity College of London. Our pupils once again achieved a fine set of results. Our ensembles had a busy year with many performance opportunities which included three studio concerts, a performance at the opening of the Multi-Purpose Sport Facility as well as performances at assemblies. The highlight of the year was the addition of the Spring Concert. This event showcased all our ensembles and provided an opportunity for collaboration with the Art and Drama Departments.

  • Mrs Jenny MaltbyAll St George’s Preparatory children spend at least one hour per week creating lovely works of art in both two and three dimensions. Clay work is always the favourite!

‘In Creative Company’ Extra Art children are able to spend a further hour in the Art Studio weekly.

I am so proud of the standard of work and dedication that many of our children have achieved throughout the year. The art exhibitions during the Cultural Department’s Spring Concert, as well as the prize-giving ceremony, were once again a colourful representation of the standard of work achieved during the year.

I congratulate Emma Billson on being awarded The Joan Gay ‘Art of the Year’ Trophy for 2017. The Trophy for Outstanding Commitment to Visual Arts was won by Stacey Reed. In Grade 7, Somila Dyakala, Justina Lucas, Lauren Miller, Seth Ramdass, Cristina Scribante and Cheyenne Symons received awards for Excellence and Commitment to Visual Arts.

  • The Learning Support Department is growing and we are very excited about what we have to offer the pupils at St George’s Prep.

The support department strives to meet the diverse and individual needs of the student, together with the class teacher to assist them in reaching their full potential. Our Support team consists of two Learning Support Therapists, two Occupational Therapists,

a Speech Therapist, a Paediatric Therapist as well as a Registered Councillor. We also have Educational Psychologists with whom we work extremely closely, should the need be to refer outside of school.

Referrals are made through the class teacher. Once the parents have been contacted, the therapist will come and observe in the classroom, as well as perform a formal assessment. The class teachers and therapists work as a team and will find suitable times during the school day when children can come out of the classroom for therapy sessions.

In addition, the Learning Support Department facilitates the teaching of foreign languages such as French, German and Spanish to children in the Senior Primary wanting to do an additional language.

  • Aftercare

The Grade 2 – 4 group was the biggest we have had in five years. All classes were divided into smaller groups for homework. This was possible as all Junior Prep teachers had a homework group of their own, which meant the children were free to play outdoors in no time.

School lunch was offered to Grades 1 and 2 at an additional fee and to my surprise they all had healthy appetites and were willing to experiment with unfamiliar tastes and textures - especially the girls.

The new wendy house proved to be very popular especially for the children who never tire of playing house. Boys were often seen with

dolls in their arms whilst the girls were playing with Lego! What probably astounded me the most this year was how many Grade 2 boys sat reading their library books outdoors, totally oblivious of what was going on around them. I know Mrs Roth, our librarian, will be thrilled to bits!

Our year-end party is around the corner. As we look back on the year, we realise that the little ones are able to read with confidence and number bonds and word sums are not such a challenge to the Grade 2s any longer. Fractions and division sums are becoming more familiar to Grade 3s. Where has the time gone?

    AFTERCAREMrs Irene Perry

The Aftercare Programme continues to grow each year without exception. The Grade 1 group was particularly grown-up this year and routines were established in record time. Happy children meant happy parents although the latter sometimes wondered why, on the odd occasion, their little darlings were not that keen to go home. The happy environment at Aftercare speaks for itself.

I will forever have fond memories of all the pupils who attended Aftercare in the past five years. There was never a day that they didn’t make me laugh. They have been my passion and I thank you for the privilege of being able to watch them grow into the special children they are today.

A special word of thanks goes to all my assistants for their endless efforts in making Aftercare such a happy place to be.

OVERSEAS PUPIL EXCHANGE PROGRAMMEMr Andrew StamperOnce again the 2017 UK Exchange Programme proved to be a tremendous success. The programme with Holmewood House has now been in existence for ten years and the ties between the schools could not be any stronger.

Eight pupils from St George’s were fortunate enough to be part of the programme this year. Together with Mr Stamper, the accompanying teacher, the pupils had the opportunity to experience life in the UK, forge new friendships that will last a lifetime, and experience tourist attractions such as Big Ben, London’s Underground network, Wembley and Lords Sports arenas as well as the iconic Cambridge University. One of the requirements of being selected to go on exchange is that pupils and their families host the UK pupils in return. In March we welcomed Mr Morgan-Jones and six Holmewood House pupils to the Friendly City. A very big thank you to the families for opening up their homes and ensuring our visitors left with an unforgettable experience.

The chess team met on Monday afternoons throughout the year to practise their chess skills. They had opportunities to play against each other and on their iPads.

We were entered into a chess league and had much fun playing against other schools on Friday afternoons. The highlight of the season was the tour to Oakhill. The children thoroughly enjoyed the experience of travelling to an out-of-town destination and playing against fellow chess players from another province.

A number of enthusiastic Junior Prep children attended Friday morning practices on a regular basis, which was very pleasing. Chess at St George’s has a promising future.

  • Sport Report

Sport plays a fundamental role in the school’s mission to support and nurture individual pupils’ needs and talents. Our sports programme is diverse, providing every pupil with the opportunity to play a sport, and it allows them to gain insight into the experiences that are associated with it. This creates the opportunity to learn about others in a different environment, be it as teammate or opponent. It also gives learners the opportunity to see teachers in a different light. Sport can also be a great release, allowing pupils to go back into the classroom and work that bit harder, smarter and even differently on the things that motivate them.

    SPORT REPORTMr Anton Peltenburg

On the sports fields, our sides have continued to do us proud as they held their own against the toughest of competition. It has been a very busy and exciting year, exposing our children to different events, tournaments and fixtures. As a school we have attended 22 festivals, 3 independent school events and 6 derby days. We have entered various sides into 10 different leagues, hosted 4 galas and 3 festivals. We have added Irish dancing to our programme.

This extensive programme is something we wish to build on in the future, offering every pupil the opportunity to experience varied sports and giving our B and C sides the opportunity to also play in a festival or to go on a tour.

Thank you to our sports coaches for your time and effort in ensuring that our pupils are able to participate and compete in our rich and varied sporting programme. Thank you to all the parents for supporting your children.

A huge thank you to Ms Pattison and Mrs Berry for always assisting the Sports Department and ‘saving the day’. We appreciate everything you do. To Mr Jefferys and his team, you really are the superheroes, making sure everything is in place, working and looking professional. Thank you for all your hard work and time.

    GIRLS SWIMMING

St George’s Prep once again had an amazing season in the swimming pool. We participated in B and C League galas and performed extremely well in all the relay competitions.

At the Inter-House Gala, Brawn were the champions with Stevens finishing in second position and Francis in third. There were six records broken on the day and the gala was a huge success. Cade Hummel and Jaime Mote won the Junior Victor and Victrix Ludorum respectively, while Jordan Denyer and Somila Xego won the Senior Victor and Victrix awards.

Swimmers who performed well at the Inter-House Gala continued on to compete at the annual Quadrangular Gala which was held at St George’s

Prep this year. At this gala we were the strongest school, breaking more records as well as winning more events than any other school.

Special mention must be made of Jordan Denyer who broke two Eastern Province records in the twelve-year-old age group for the 50m and 100m breaststroke respectively.

Congratulations to all participants on a fantastic season of swimming. We look forward to seeing you all reach even greater heights next season.

Thank you to all the teachers and coaches for your commitment this season. St George’s swimming would not be where it is without your help.

    Cricket

Cricket at St George’s continues to be a popular sport amongst our pupils and we have seen an increase in the number of pupils participating.

Our u9 boys have shown great enthusiasm for the game and developed their skills considerably throughout the season with the introduction of the hard ball game. The boys had fixtures organised against a few different schools in the mini-cricket league and thoroughly enjoyed their games. Arguably one of the highlights for the team was the opportunity to play in the Mount Pleasant Cricket Festival. The u9 cricket squad show great potential for the future. The squad developed well, particularly in the bowling department.

The u11 cricketers had to endure some hard times at the beginning of 2017 as they were entered into the A league. This meant that they played against some of the strongest teams in the region. Our boys did not back down from the challenge and fought hard throughout the first term. We were fortunate to enter two teams into the leagues which allowed us to give more boys the opportunity to represent the school. The Knysna Tour played an important role in preparing the boys for the start of the season as our boys were exposed to some quality cricket against schools from around the country.

The u13s, in particular, have had a great season. The character and improvement that have been shown by these players has been spectacular. The Westering T20 challenge remains one of the highlights of the season for the u13s, as the team was the winner of the 2017 Bowl at the festival. Another memorable event was the Co-Ed Festival where the boys had outstanding performances against some really strong opposition.

During the winter period, the cricketers experienced some serious coaching sessions with Mr Mawisa who kindly imparted his cricket knowledge to the boys. In the latter part of the season we introduced girls cricket. We are very excited about this and eager for its growth at the school.

I would like to thank Mr Jefferys and his team for immaculate pitches and fields at Union.

Our annual Inter-House Athletics Day took place on 7 September. It was a day characterised by healthy inter-house rivalry and pupils had the opportunity to showcase their athletic abilities. Not only were the athletes determined and enthusiastic, but the supporters on the stands were dressed for the occasion, cheering and shouting and battling for the spirit cup.

Participation - either on the track, field or on the stands - is one of the important features of this event and our pupils did not disappoint.  We were proud to see children signing up for many different events to earn the maximum number of points for their house. The winning house on the day was Brawn.

Three of our athletes were selected for the EP A team to participate also at the SA Biathlon Champs in Paarl. We are extremely proud of Christian Appels who finished in 10th place during the Boys u13 race and Tara Sacké, who finished in 18th place during the Girls u13 race. Trishul Mathura completed his race comfortably.

A new challenge awaited our athletes during the 2017/2018 season which started in September. Many of them have to compete in older age groups.

    Cross Country

Inter-HouseIt was a beautiful, sunny Thursday morning. Excitement filled the air as pupils filled three Algoa buses on 18 May. For many of them, it was the highlight of the day, as this was their first time on a ‘big bus’. The excitement continued as the buses set off for NMMU where the annual Inter-House Cross Country event was held.

The u11 girls and u11 boys were the first running group to approach the starting line. All of the runners started off at a very fast pace. In the boys race Ben Ristow finished comfortably in first place, with Lutho Mantlaka in second place and Joe Niven in third. Clireez Brugh was the first u11 girl home, followed by Julia Swart and Yasmine Boualam.

Next up were the u9 girls and u9 boys. For some it was their first 2 km race and others had not yet experienced the joy of running in a cross country race.

Siweziwe Shongwe crossed the finish line first. Damian Rhodes was second, and breathing down his neck in third place, was Ayomide Adeleke. Jaime Mote finished first for the u9 girls with Lillian Krige following on her heels in second place and Sharon Aboagye in third.

The 3 km girls open race followed. Defending her title for first place, Tara Sacké managed to dominate the race, and so did Sophie France in second place. Somila Xego finished third. It was lovely to see the camaraderie of a few Grade 7 girls who finished the race as a group, celebrating their last cross country race.

After a hard-fought 4 km open boys race, Christian Appels finished in record time, taking first place. Daniel Ristow took second place and Luke Hartel third.

The event ended as pupils gathered on the embankment for the prize-giving in which Stevens emerged as the winning house.

A huge thank you to all those involved for making this a successful and very slick event - marshals, runners, staff and parents.

    TRAIL RUNNING

    Cross Country

Trail RunningThe Independent School Trail Run was hosted by Woodridge at Crossways on 7 September. Many athletes really had to push themselves to find some energy after the morning’s Inter-House athletics. There were a few hills to conquer, dusty gravel roads to cross and sharp bends to negotiate on the route. Athletes kept their minds focused and managed to finish their race comfortably and strongly. Their sportsmanship and endurance are commendable.

Cross Country LeagueA few athletes took part in the Cross Country League events held on Saturdays throughout the second and third term and holidays. At the EP Champs, Tara Sacké dominated the races in her age group and received gold. Christian Appels ran a qualifying time. Trishul Mathura, Luke Barnard and Thica Kritharis performed consistently throughout the season. A sprint finish by little-known runner, Nathan Appels, rendered him a top position and Taitum Mathura managed to improve her times.

Congratulations to all the passionate athletes who diligently tried their best. Always keep expectations of yourself at high levels, never became complacent, and you will never lose your sense of direction.

Tennis in 2017 has gone from strength to strength. It has been a successful and rewarding year for our determined tennis players. A special thank you to Marina Cilliers, who assisted in the first term, for her passionate coaching skills, and to Janine Zietsman for her dedication and interest in developing the players’ tennis

abilities. Lastly, to our coaching staff, a big thank you for your determination and for always creating a fun and educational environment.

Our A teams played in the 1st league and had to produce their best tennis. They won the majority of their matches. There has been considerable development throughout our B teams and to see the players developing brings much joy. A number of our team and squad players entered the singles tournaments hosted by

the Primary Schools Committee and represented our school with admirable sportsmanship and determination.

The dedication shown throughout the year has been overwhelming. It has been a pleasure for Mrs van Wyk and I to watch the players improve in skill and overall enjoyment of the sport. Special thanks to all the parents for their support. It means a great deal to the school and our players.

  • GIRLS HOCKEY Mrs Mary-Lou Emslie

    Girls Hockey

We once again had an extremely successful hockey season. All our teams made good progress this year and had great fun during practices and matches.

St George’s Prep hosted a well-attended and fun-filled hockey festival on June 3. A total of 41 schools had a brilliant morning and the support from families, teachers and coaches was excellent. Mr

Anton Peltenburg and Ms Kelly Bradfield must be thanked for their planning. It was a resounding success.

We travelled to Oakhill on 26 and 27 May and the players enjoyed meeting up with old friends from last year. We also travelled to Merrifield on 25 and 26 August where the teams did extremely well and enjoyed being hosted by Merrifield.

On the provincial front, Emma Swart, Jorja Sacké, Sophie France, Stacey Reed, Lisa Nxati, Somila Xego, Esona Mzinzi, Justina Lucas, Jamie Howard and Keira Ocharo, represented St George’s at the EP Hockey Trials held over a number of Saturdays. Tara went to the EP u14 trials and did extremely well. Esona made the EP A team, Jorja,

Somila and Lisa made the EP B team and Keira made the EP C team. One of our Grade 3 teachers, Ms Jaclyn Dawson, was chosen as coach of the EP B team. What an achievement, congratulations girls. St George’s is proud of you.

A special thanks goes to Ms Jaclyn Dawson on coaching and to her brother, Michael, for assisting with the umpiring. I would also like to thank the coaches of all the teams for giving up their time and effort on the hockey field this season. We, the players and coaches, appreciate the effort we receive from you, the parents, on the side of the field and for your help with transport to and from matches.

A wonderful season was had by all.

  • BOYS HOCKEY Mr Anton Peltenburg

    Boys Hockey

This year was a tremendous one for u11 hockey at St George’s Prep. We fielded two full field teams in the various leagues and both teams participated with determination and courage. The skill level amongst the boys improved throughout the season and both teams recorded some memorable results. The addition of the Multi-Purpose Facility meant that the boys could play more hockey on astro than in previous years. This will definitely stand them in good stead in the future. A highlight for our boys was the introduction of the Fives Festival on

our astro, an event we will look to grow in 2018.

The u13 hockey boys began this busy season by setting out termly and weekly goals. This team consisted of a group of passionate and enthusiastic individuals who enjoyed playing together throughout the season. Each player has a varied repertoire of hockey experience and it was the adaptability of each individual to bring those skills, knowledge and personal qualities together to form a competitive team and a way of playing that made us a combative

force. Congratulations to Daniel Ristow (u13A), Hlumokuhle Jikela, James Kruger, Bryce Jennings (all u13B) and Mila Miti (u13C) for attaining their Eastern Province colours.

We had an exciting season playing in over 40 games. We participated in the Kingswood Festival, Grey Tournament, Hilton and Michaelhouse Festivals and the Eastern Province Primary School League. There were many highlights, the standout event of which must be the Durban Tour.

    Soccer

The u11 squad enjoyed a most successful soccer season, which was highlighted by a successful tour to Merrifield, where the team enjoyed a match of the highest intensity. Our boys found themselves trailing as they went into half time, however, they rallied behind one another and fought back valiantly to score a late goal, snatching victory in the dying seconds of the match.

The u11A team had a phenomenal season, only suffering defeat in one match during the season - a true testament to the hard work both the players and coaches put in during practices.

The season proved to be an unforgettable one for the u13As, as the boys played some breathtaking football to end with a record of six matches played, five wins and one loss.

They scored 31 goals and conceded only seven goals. It would have been easy for the boys to become complacent after a couple of good performances, however, they showed incredible discipline and hunger to maintain performances of the highest standard. The squad can be incredibly proud of the effort that they put in, the type of attacking football that they produced, and the manner in which they represented the school. It was an absolute pleasure to work with this crop of young players and the future of SGP football looks bright.

A special thank you to Mr Jefferys and his team for ensuring that all the teams had quality fields to play on, despite the difficulties in weather conditions and water restrictions with which they had to deal.

    Netball

Netball is thriving at St George’s! It has been most exciting to see the tremendous growth in our players and the increase in numbers.

Our netball players have all shown great commitment, enthusiasm and team spirit throughout the season.

We were fortunate enough to secure the coaching expertise of three provincial (and national) coaches. Landi Stone, Nandipha Jack and Lucy Twani have added great value to netball at St George’s. A big thank you must also be extended to Ms Dalla-Vecchia, who came to our rescue this season, as we had more teams than had been entered into the league playing matches.

Inter-House matches took on a different format and all age groups were included in this exciting event.

The league matches were challenging, but the majority of our teams managed to win more matches than in previous seasons. The season ended on a high note, with all our teams winning their last matches.

  • RUGBYMr Craig Carter

    Rugby

St George’s Prep was once again entered into the Grey Junior ‘Super League’ competition, allowing the children to play ten-a-side and encouraging a running style of rugby. The season was filled with many highlights, which included some very strong performances at the rugby festival hosted at Woodridge, and memorable winning performances against Clarendon and one of the Grey Super League teams. The Grade 2s were invited to attend the Sum Fun Festival hosted by Summerwood. Here, the boys performed extremely well, finishing with two victories out of three matches. All the boys can be very proud of the way in which they represented St George’s Prep and we have some exciting young talent to look forward to in the coming years.

The u11 squad thoroughly enjoyed a most successful season. The highlight of the season a new style of rugby similar to that played in the Northern Hemisphere, introduced a more flowing style of rugby which promotes skills development. This style of rugby has really boosted the u11 rugby players’ skill set and they achieved exceptional results against some tough opposition. The highlight of the season was most certainly the two tournaments at Woodridge Prep School where they lost two matches in the first tournament and then were unbeaten in the second tournament. This was a true reflection of the hard work of both the players and the coach during the season.

The u13 rugby boys had a short but successful season. The team spirit shown at practices was impressive. We started off with an excellent away game versus St Andrew’s. The highlight for the boys was most definitely our tour to Knysna to play Oakhill. We played a sevens format which tested the boys’ fitness levels and there were some outstanding performances on this tour. The majority of the u13 group of boys was made up of Grade 6 pupils. This is an exciting prospect for rugby at St George’s Prep. For the first time in many years we will have a team of Grade 7 pupils playing strength versus strength in their age group next year.

We look forward to an exciting 2018 rugby season at St George’s Prep.

    Water polo

Water polo is a sport that continues to grow at St George’s. We have introduced junior water polo and it has been rewarding to see the enthusiasm amongst the new players. The boys and girls have shown dedicated commitment towards practices, matches and tournaments. This effort has resulted in a great improvement in the polo pool.

Once again our teams participated in the Collegiate water polo league. Despite facing some tough competition, the boys and girls looked forward to these matches that they thoroughly enjoyed.

A highlight of the season was most definitely the Knysna Oakhill Chukka Festival. This is the country’s biggest open water festival, held in the Knysna Lagoon. Participants make many friends, play a great deal of water polo and see their coaches play in the coaches and referees game too.

Thank you to Ms Dalla-Vecchia and the new junior water polo coaches, James and Kirsty, for their passionate coaching skills and for sacrificing their time to attend matches, festivals and tours.

Congratulations to Jordan Denyer, James Kruger, Bryce Jennings, Jorje Sacké, Sophie France and Somila Xego on their selection for the Eastern Province water polo teams.

  • This year Irish Dancing was introduced as an extra mural at St George’s. Dance lessons took place on Tuesday afternoons and Friday mornings, with children from Grade 1-7 attending classes.

Pupils were introduced to the basics of Irish Dancing, as well as to the beginner routines. Those who progressed rapidly were encouraged to attend formal training at the Irish Dance Studio, as this would allow them to register and compete formally. Serena Escola took part in the South African Irish Dance Championships in Johannesburg and achieved placings and a gold medal for first place in one of her dances.

Irish Dancing requires dedication and hard work. It is a complicated dance form which develops coordination, musicality and builds confidence.

I hope to see Irish Dancing continue to grow within the school.

These were the lyrics of the opening song of our concert, A Happy Day of Paint and Play, and this couldn’t be closer to the truth. Our Pre-Prep is indeed a very happy environment and we feel as though we are part of a big, extended family.

As each year goes by, I feel even prouder to be a part of this incredible school. There is nothing more rewarding than watching happy children play and learn indoors and outdoors, and seeing the sheer delight on their faces when they share what they have discovered with their teachers and friends. Our children love the fact that they can climb, clamber, swing and ride bikes. However, when they feel like doing something quietly creative, they can ‘bake’ in our Mud Kitchen, hide in the teepee or whisper their secrets to the fairies in our beautiful Fairy Garden.

If I were to choose definitions to describe our boys and girls, these would be perfect:

Boy, n.: a noise with dirt on it

Girl, n.: a giggle with glitter on it

One thing I realise more every year is that the reason our children at the Pre-Prep are so happy, is because we allow them to ‘just be’. We give them the freedom to express themselves through messy play, creative activities and fun learning through play. I also love to see the special relationships between our children and their teachers. There is a safe, caring and nurturing atmosphere that helps the children to feel secure enough to explore and discover independently.

There are always some special highlights to our year. These are events when families come together and celebrate special occasions, such as Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day and Christmas. Our Easter Parade was a morning of bright, colourful Easter hats being paraded
