Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam

For the greater glory of God...

Dear Parish Family,

During the month of November we take time to

remember and honor the souls of the faithful

departed. We do this by celebrating the

Solemnity of All Saints (November 1) and the

Feast of All Souls (November 2). We can honor

the holy souls by visiting the graves of our loved

ones. We also remember those who have gone

before us by venerating the relics of saints.

Relics are the remains of those canonized as

saints. A first class relic is a part of their body,

such as a piece of their bone; a second class relic

is an article touched by the person or touched

directly to part of their body; a third class relic

is an object that has touched a first or second

class relic. In the early days of the Church, people

could not always travel to the burial site of a

saint. So the saint’s body or belongings were

divided and shared with the faithful throughout

the world. Relics help us remember, respect,

honor and seek the intercession of the saints who

have gone before us. A relic provides us with a

physical and spiritual connection to a saint.

Relics and saints are never worshiped. Worship

is given to God alone. St. Jerome put it this way:

“We do not worship, we do not adore, for fear

that we should bow down to the creature rather

than to the Creator.” Rather, he explains, we

venerate the relics of the saints in order the better

to adore Him whose saints they are.

The laws of the Church forbid the sale of relics.

Relics are not magic “good luck” charms. They

do not perform miracles. Only God does that,

sometimes working through the relic of a saint.

Faithfully in Christ,

Father Rob
