The calendar has been full of many special events including: School Carols, Year 6 Big Day out, swimming lessons, beach days, School Swimming carnival, Grandparents and Special Friends Day, 2017 Foundation Student’s Orientation days, Basketball Tournaments, Special Mass celebrations, Year 3 Day camp, St. John’s Ambulance First Aid training for students, Year 5 & 6 Brighton schools cluster days, Year 5 Student Leadership events, Year 6 Graduation, Year 4 Sailing, Fire Ed Visits for Foundation Students, Staff Planning days for 2017, Farm Visits and Foundation chickens hatching to name a few. All of this on top of the regular educational opportunities our students receive on a weekly basis here at school. We certainly have a lot to be thankful for at St. Finbar’s. I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge and thank the members of staff who are departing at the end of the year: Mrs. Jane Byrne will be leaving us at the end of this year and I would like to thank her for the work she has done in Sustainability and Environment Studies over the last 4 ½ years. I would also like to thank Mrs. Jenny Young who has been our Performing / Visual Arts teacher over the past 12 years. I wish them both well in their future endeavours. Yesterday, we had our ‘Up’ Day for all students who will be attending St. Finbar’s in 2017. This was an excellent opportunity for students to meet their 2017 teacher and classmates. Special thanks to the class teachers of 2016 who spent many hours placing students in next year class groupings. It is an incredibly difficult job with many variables to consider in the best interests of the students involved. I would also like to acknowledge the tireless work of Daniela Marinelli ~ President of P & F and Matt Malone ~ Chairperson of School Advisory Board, who have performed admirably in their roles this year. Thank you both on behalf of the school community for the amazing work you have both done for St. Finbar’s school this year. School reports will go LIVE to families tomorrow, Friday 9 th December at 2pm. This year, as stated in previous newsletters it will be done via the newly set up parent portal. If you have not accessed this online area yet can I please encourage all parent to do so as this is the only way reports will be accessed this year. Each family will also soon receive an email with next year’s school fees and a flier for Celebration week 2017. What a Wonderful Year As we all reflect on the wonderful year that has been, no doubt each of us can count the many ups and downs which have presented themselves each day. Each child has had their own highlights and their challenges. School, especially primary school, is an important place where we learn the skills to manage our relationships with our peers and hopefully build the resilience needed to maintain our wellbeing and the wellbeing of those around us. Yesterday was a great example of this when the children were told their new class groups for next year. I am sure many children went home excited that they were with their best friends and yet others may have been disappointed that this was not the case. However, regardless of the groupings I know each teacher will do everything they can to help their children develop positive relationships and forge new friendships throughout the year. The Christmas holidays are a great opportunity for our children to rest and recharge ready for the challenges waiting in 2017 and I hope it is a time all families can relax a little and enjoy more time together.

Highlights from 2016 As I have mentioned many times this year, the wellbeing of each child is central to all we do at St Finbar’s and each learning activity both formal and informal should help our children to develop their social and emotional skills. Here are a few highlights of our year which remind us of the wonderful opportunities provided at St Finbar’s.

Looking Forward 2017 We have many great things planned for next year and our teachers have already been busy thinking about their study units, possible excursions and of course our wonderful camp program for years 3-6. We will again have a great focus on student wellbeing, teaching social emotional skills, promoting our school values and building a community of respect and cooperation. There will, no doubt, be many challenges but every one of them should offer an opportunity to learn and grow individually and as a school community. We are all working together, Parents and Teachers to create the best school we can. We may not always agree but our differences are what can make us great. As long as we always support the decisions we make as a school community we can continue to foster that positive partnership to give our children the best education possible.

SPORT NEWS: Mrs Tania Thompson

SUNSHINE, SWIMMING, SUPPORT = super day out for all at MSAC!

It seemed like we were in for a rather chilly day out according to the weather forecast, however as it turned out, last Friday was a PERFECT day for our whole school swimming carnival – lots of sunshine, warmth & loads of cheering & support! Our Junior (F-2) Swim carnival was again held up the southern end of the outdoor sheltered pool, with all students participating in three events: 25m Freestyle, 25m Backstroke and a 25m Team relay. It was wonderful to see our younger students take to the water so confidently and with such enthusiasm- many we’re sure put their recent GESAC Learn to Swim skills to practise!

In the northern end of the pool, our Year 3-6’s Swim carnival saw students participate in 25m and 50m races over the day; with most opting to compete in at least 2 – 4 events. All students are to be congratulated for their efforts in each event and what is more pleasing, was the eagerness shown from many to ask to participate in more events! Their carnival finished with our Year 6’s Novelty House Race, Year 6 Water Polo matches (well done to Tom, Luke & Maxwell for their organisation of this) and our Year 3-5’s had a fun free-time stint in the other half of the pool.

A HUGE thank you goes to our twenty-four Junior and twenty-eight Senior Parent Helpers & Secondary Student Helpers who gave up their time to support the running of this event! Our staff and students are very grateful for your efforts in allowing the day to operate and run as it did. CONGRATULATIONS goes to Xavier House, who gained the most points in BOTH the Junior and Senior Carnivals; to be titled the WINNING HOUSE for our Swimming Carnival this year! Well done Xavier students!

District Swimming Trials for interested Yr 3-6 students will be held in Week 2 or 3 of 2017: Notices will go home in the first 2 days of 2017 for any student wishing to try out for our District Team: 2 swimmers will selected to represent the school for each of the 4 swimming strokes (max of 2 indl events/student). The 2017 District Carnival is set for Monday 28th February at GESAC.

SUSTAINABILITY NEWS:

New enviro lunch bags now available! Our year 6 Sustainability leaders have developed a great new lunch bag idea for our school that we encourage all parents to support. New Sticky beaks insulated lunch bags are now for sale through the uniform shop for $12. These can be used to bring your own lunch from home, and also can be used as a lunch order bag in place of a paper bag. Anna will fill the bag with lunch orders, keeping them cold or hot. The bags feature a front window for child's name and a bag zip pocket and window to put money and lunch order. Thanks to Sophie and Chloe for your initiative and to Anna in the tuckshop for her support.

Records-Archived As the end of the year is fast approaching many administrative processes need to be finalized. In order to stream line the enrolment records located at the service, staff will archive any records of families who have not used the service in 6 months or more. This means that families and guardians will not be permitted to make a booking without completing a new enrolment form. This process also allows for families to update their details. New enrollment records can be obtained from the office or the St Finbar's School website under the Community tab (OSHC). Thank you in advance.

Programming During this term the children at OSHC have worked very hard to create wonderful displays that encapsulate their learning. We have covered the topic of sustainability at Christmas by making

beautiful decorations using recycled cards and newspaper; the topic of water safety by decorating a poster of a surfing Santa and finally the topic of inclusion where the song and poster of

Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer were used to promote strategies that make others feel welcome and cared for. Families are invited to view our displays and feedback is always encouraged. Children benefit from this feedback as well seeing that their efforts are valued by adults and this also helps them to consolidate their knowledge by being able to communicate information to others.

Early dismissal Thursday 15/12/2016 The service will be operating at the earlier time of 2pm to accommodate with the school’s early dismissal and at no extra charge. Snack will be served at the regular time of 3.45pm with the short fee applying from 2-2.30. Should you wish to book then please call the service directly on 95920994. Photos of St Finbar’s Church Christmas Decorations

Over the years our church has been blessed with beautiful decorations for each of the liturgical

seasons. We are looking for any photos of our church decorated for Christmas over the years that

you may have. This could include the Altar, the Nativity crib, the general interior of the church at

this time of year. If you have any photos of the church during Advent or Christmas we would love

a copy. Please email to [email protected]

Thank you

Last Monday a few other volunteers and I met at St Finbar's to load around 80 hampers and bags of goods that the St Finbar's Parish had kindly put together. We met the van man, loaded up the tight truck and headed off to the Brigidine Ministry Centre in Albert Park. When we got there, we were greeted by staff and volunteers as they came out with trolleys and helped unload all the hampers into a room that was half full of goods and gifts donated by others. We were all extremely tired after the transferring but it was definitely worth it, and I'm sure the Asylum Seekers will be very grateful for all our efforts. Tara Cooper
