Dear Parents, What an exciting week ‘Book Week’ has been with many activities planned. It was wonderful to
see so many parents and special visitors in the Foundation classes on Monday sharing stories
with the children. Don’t forget that tomorrow is our annual Book Week parade where all children
are to come to school dressed as the favourite book character. The parade will begin just after
9am in the school hall. Everyone is most welcome to attend.
I would like to give a special thanks to Mrs Liz Drinan for her amazing organisation of our Book
Fair which has been in the library this week. There is something very special about a brand new
book selected for personal interest! I know I have been eyeing off the Star Wars books very
closely.
Coming up on the 9th of September is our Italian Festival Day. Special thanks to Mrs. Sirianni
for all of the amazing work that has gone into organising such an amazing event on our calendar.
It promises to be a very special day. Following this day there will be Whole School Art Show on
Wednesday 14th September coordinated by Mrs. Jenny Young. More information will follow
about these two important events on our calendar.
Thanks to Sonia Blakey (Learning Support Officer) who
coordinated a Yoga session for our Year 6 students.
Finding time to be able relax on our own and find peace
is essential for a healthy mind and body.
Our Year 3 and 4 students competed in the Hoop Time
Basketball competition today which was held at MSAC.
Special thanks to Mrs. Thompson for once again
organising our teams and my sincere thanks to Mr. Anderson and Mrs. Sue Humble who
assisted with coaching and organising on the day. Thanks also to the many parents who
supported our students by coaching and cheering from the sidelines.
In the coming weeks the annual Insight SRC Surveys will be commencing. These independently
run surveys are a very important platform of feedback to me from our 3 key stakeholders in the
community – students, parents and teachers. All staff are expected to complete the survey

however, this year I will be asking every family to complete an online survey (This is different to
our own Google survey held last Term), as well as including our Year 3, 4, 5 and 6 students.
Teacher, parent and student feedback is critical to the running of our school and provides
necessary data for us to celebrate our many successes as well as being able to address any
concerns people may have. Envelopes have gone home to every family today and the survey
will be available from Monday 29th October – Friday 16th September. Please keep the envelopes
safe as we do not have replacements.
Thanks to our hard working P & F who held their monthly meeting on Tuesday 23rd August. It
is important for our children to see our dedicated parents coordinating important events on our
school calendar. It highlights the importance of a partnership between school and home as well
as building our ‘Social Capital’.
The ‘Principal’s Times Tables Challenge’ has continued over the past few weeks with many
children in Year 4 and now Year 3 gaining their certificates. Congratulations to everyone for
their hard work on this challenge!
How amazing it was to see the Reading Rockets session in the library this Term. I would like to
give a special thankyou to Mrs. Ward who has initiated this program and runs it in her own time.
What incredible dedication to the education of our children.
Thank you to all of the parents who attended
the Information evening on Student
Wellbeing last Wednesday evening.
Building our children’s resilience and
enhancing their wellbeing should be a
priority for all parents and educators alike.
Thanks to Mr. Rodrigues for organising this
important session.
Next Wednesday 31st August and Thursday 1st September I will be in attendance at a Principal
Professional Development Program at the Catholic Leadership Centre in the city. During my
absence Mr. Rodrigues will be in charge of the school. I will resume normal duties on Friday 2nd
September.
Peace and Blessings, Pat Berlingeri Principal

RE News – 24 August 2016
As we conclude Migrant and Refugee Week, it is appropriate that this weekend, Luke’s gospel talks
about the importance of humility.
What is humility? Fr. Gabriele Bentoglio, CS, Under-Secretary of the Pontifical Council for the Pastoral
Care of Migrants and Itinerant People shared this story and message:
‘Three persons were boasting to each other on who had the best Bible translation. The
first said,
“Mine is the best translation because this is a New American Bible. This is being used in
the Mass. The words used are modern and easy to understand.”
The second man boasted, “Mine is the best because this is Jerusalem Bible. Very poetic
and it is used in our charismatic group meeting.”
The third man said, “I like the Bible translation of my mother because she translated it into her
concrete life; she lives everything written on it.”
The other two were silent!!
The story summarizes the challenge of Jesus Christ in this week’s gospel. Jesus challenges us
to translate the word of God into our daily lives. It is part of human nature to want to fit in
and to want to belong. Sometimes we are tempted to seek this acceptance at any cost. …
When our sense of belonging is achieved through the harming, humiliation or exploitation of others
then the price is too high!
When our desire for the latest fashion comes at the expense of others being able to simply live, then
the price is too high!
When we lift ourselves up by putting others down, then the price is too high!
Challenging us to make the Bible alive in our hearts, minds and through our actions is one way of being
humble, and humility could be understood as a synonym of mercy.’
Perhaps this week we can help someone in need, without expecting them to return the favour …
Over the next couple of weeks our Social Justice leaders will speak at Assembly about the important
work of Legacy:
“Today, Legacy's compassionate service assists over 90,000 widows and 1,900 children and dependants with a disability through innovative and practical programs aimed at: • Protecting the basic needs of individuals and families.
• Advocating for the entitlements, rights and benefits of individuals and
families.
• Assisting families to cope with bereavement.
• Helping people thrive, despite their adversity and loss.” (Taken from Legacy

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWS ~ Mrs. June Kellar
WELLBEING FOR KIDS PARENT WORKSHOP.
Thanks to all those who were able to attend the wonderful information evening last night. Georgina certainly
presented us with some great ideas and insights into how we can all develop greater resilience and in doing so
improve our confidence. Those attending were able to reflect on ways they could help children:
Develop essential life skills
Cope with life’s ups and downs
Develop independence and persistence
Become more resilient
Become bully-proof
Develop more confidence and lessen anxiety
Solve problems independently and deal with conflict
Approach life with a positive outlook to create success
Georgina will be providing us with notes from the evening which I will pass on for your interest. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Seasons for Growth: Seasons for Growth is a program for children, young people or
adults who have experienced significant change or loss.
If you feel this Program may be of benefit to your child you can complete the expression of interest
form HERE. We may not be able to accommodate all students immediately as the sessions generally
work best when grouped by age.

Playground Behaviour:
For many children the school playground is what they look forward to most while at school.
It is a time to play and catch up with friends, to let off steam and enjoy being outdoors. We
hope that the playgrounds at St Finbar’s are always places where every child can feel they
belong and can feel safe. Children will always have disagreements even with their closest
friends and the schoolyard is often where they will learn the social skills needed to deal with
this conflict. This is an important part of growing up and learning how to manage their emotions and deal with
disagreement. We have behaviour policies in place to help ensure all children are treated respectfully and remain
safe, however, we also encourage children to take responsibility in managing their relationships with others. BELIEF STATEMENTS: (from our playground behaviour policy)
All children have a right to play in a safe environment.
All children, teachers, parents and visitors have the right to be treated with respect and courtesy.
All children, teachers, parents and visitors have the right to feel safe and happy.
There is an expectation that all students at St Finbar’s School will behave in an acceptable
way to ensure our beliefs are upheld.

Community Links
When children feel connected with the community they live in, their sense of wellbeing is enhanced. Outside school
hours care (OSHC) services have an important role to play in encouraging children to feel a part of their community
and in supporting them to make a contribution to it. OSHC services are well placed to meet the needs of children
and families if they develop links, share information and
work collaboratively with others in their community. Children, families and staff in OSHC services bring a
background of relationships with families, friends and their broader community. Their community can consist of
people that they interact with and have relationships with regularly and can also include the broader associations
they have with cultural, religious and sporting groups. These existing connections form the foundations for
promoting links with the community in OSHC services.
Why build links with the community?
OSHC services do not operate in isolation from the surrounding community. The links that children, families and
staff already have, and continue to develop, with people, groups and organisations are crucial in creating a network
of support.
Much has been written on the way in which children benefit from being connected with their community. Children’s
wellbeing through self-esteem, resilience and safety are improved when they experience a sense of connectedness
with their community of family, friends, school and cultural, religious, sporting and activity groups. Being connected
with the community also encourages children to see the benefits of making positive contributions to the lives of
others. For example, by participating in local fundraising events, children can see the value of their efforts in raising
funds to assist groups or individuals in need.

Sunday 28th August 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time The goodness of God is seen in the extravagant generosity with which God gives gifts. This is described in the psalm in the boundlessness and universal scope of God’s generosity. Like the rain that falls on the entire landscape, the blessings of God are showered on all. These blessings are true gifts. They have not been earned, nor can they be repaid. God’s openness is also seen in the reading from the Letter to the Hebrews and in the gospel. All are invited to approach the heavenly city; the heavenly banquet will be open to the poor and to those who have no way of repaying. Only the humble can receive the gifts of God. Only those who can admit their neediness are open enough to realise that God’s blessings are gifts freely given, not compensation for a job well done. Without a humble spirit we are unable to receive gifts as gifts. This is either because we are too proud or we do not know how to receive with the open hearts of children, who never think that they must return in kind. This is the kind of humility recommended by Sirach. This is the kind of humility possessed by the disadvantaged pictured in the gospel. As we have received from the bounty of God, so we are called to give to others. Only those who have received with a humble spirit can give with the generosity of God, for they know that they do not deserve God’s goodness and they do not require anything in return. © Dianne Bergant CSS
