Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the Heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved. You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy. Let us be your visible face in the world and that we would also be clothed in weakness in order that we may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error.

Let everyone who approaches us feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God. Send our Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind. We ask this through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy, You who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. AMEN.

This is the invitation God gave each of us, individually and as a community. Lent is a time to experience conversion of mind and heart—to experience God’s love for each one of us.

Whatever economic problems we have, whatever family problems, whatever parish problems—they are ultimately spiritual problems. If we give God first place, the rest will follow. (Fr. Phil Bloom)

Lent is a time to get our priorities in order. Make a commitment of time to the Lord. Put God first and everything else will fall in place.

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, February 10th. You are all invited to begin the Lenten journey together.

Ash Wednesday is a day of fasting and abstinence for adults between the ages of 18 and 59. Abstinence (not eating meat) is required starting at age 14. At age 18 fasting is required as well. Fasting is defined as one full meal with minimal food at the other two meal times. Exceptions are medical or poor health and those whose work necessitates 3 full meals.

Soup and Stations of the Cross begin on Wednesday evening, February 17th. Soup starts at 6:00 p.m. in the Gym followed by Stations of the Cross at 7:00 p.m. in Church. I hope to see you there.

Jubilee Year of Mercy

Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

During this Jubilee Y ear of Mercy, Pope Francis calls us to share with everyone the tender compassion of God that we ourselves have experienced. In today’s Gospel, Luke uses a special Greek word conveying just such tenderness. In the other Gospels, Jesus calls the disciples to be “fishers,” haleis, the same word that means catching fish with hooks or nets, to be killed and eaten. But Luke uses zogron, from zoe or “life,” meaning “catch or gather people alive,” as animal lovers capture without harming, rescue from “the wild” for a better life, and protect in aquarium or zoo, tenderly cared for by professionals committed to the creatures’ well-being. So in Luke’s vision—and Pope Francis’ as well—we who have been “caught alive” by God’s mercy ourselves are to become “missionaries of mercy” during this Jubilee Year of Mercy, rescuing fellow sinners from danger and gathering them into Jesus’ community to enjoy fullness of life.

Our Open House a huge success. Thank you so much for all the love, prayers, and support from the Parish to help kick off Catholic School’s Week. We had a fantastic week filled with many wonderful activities to celebrate the great gift of Catholic Education. During the week, we were blessed with talented parents who came to speak to our students about their different career choices. Sr. Mary Anh, and Deacon Tim shared their inspiring stories about their religious vocations with the 7th and 8th graders. We also had one of our parishioners, Mary Torres, come and share an inspiring talk about her experience as an original Rosie the Riveter with our 5th - 8th graders. The rest of the week, we honored our students with small treats and lunchtime dancing, we honored all the staff members with beautiful chalk art on the black top, and shared our classrooms and performances with our “special people”. A big thank you to all the special people who came and supported our students. Finally, we focused our service day on learning all about the Jubilee Year of Mercy called for by our beloved Pope Francis. As Lent approaches quickly, the school will be working to find different works of Mercy to perform in order to reveal God’s love to others.

The St. Felicitas Book Club meets on the second Monday of the month in the St. Mary’s Center from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. or so (depending on how deeply involved we are in our discussion). We read a wide variety of books, mostly novels, biographies, thrillers, historical, westerns or classics. Choices are based on our own recommendations and availability. The books are usually available at the local libraries or are

inexpensive paper backs. We all have input in choosing the next month’s selection. We welcome new members and our meetings are announced in the Parish Bulletin Events for the Week. Please feel free to just drop in at St. Mary’s Center or call Mary Harmeyer for further information at 351-41129.

HOLY, HOLY, HOLY!

“Holy, holy, holy!” Ancient languages, like the Hebrew used in the scriptures, did not always have a way to express superlatives in one word. Isaiah could not say God was “holiest,” so he used the threefold repetition of the same word. This bit of scriptural minutiae about these “three little words” that we sing at every Mass serves as a reminder that answering God’s call has to be grounded in awareness of God’s holiness. In Isaiah and in the Gospel passage today, we hear accounts of the revelation of God’s power and might: the seraphim in the temple and the miraculous catch of fish. These are not wondrous revelations for their own sakes. They lead to a response in mission, Isaiah’s “Here I am, send me!” and the disciples’ leaving everything to follow Jesus. And so must our own “Holy, Holy, Holy!” lead us to Christ in the Eucharist every Sunday, and to a life following him day by day.
