Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, I’m very grateful and blessed to have residence at St. Felicitas since 1975. From the very first day forty years ago, when I stepped on this property, I have been moved deeply by the lovely acceptance of St. Felicitas. Msgr. Michael McGinty, Fr. Vincent Kruk and Fr. John Manning were the first three priests I lived with in the rectory. After a few months attending the ESL (English Second Language) at Holy Names College my assignment was in residence at St. Felicitas Parish working for the Vietnamese Catholic refugees. I had to organize as well as coordinate the pastoral ministry for the Vietnamese Catholics scattered throughout Alameda and Contra Costa counties. With God’s guidance and many kinds of support from St. Felicitas parishioners, I started my work and you have been God’s gift to me all these years. Your prayers, your ideas, your suggestions, your encouragement, your cares. . . during my first eighteen years, have brought to existence six Vietnamese Catholic communities at six local parishes; the Vietnamese community at St. Felicitas is one of them. In the meantime the Vietnamese Vicariate Office and Vietnamese Pastoral Center were established. Everything was running well and smoothly until my 70th birthday. I thought the time had come for a younger priest to shoulder the responsibilities of being a new director and bring-ing new visions and new ways of doing things. So I had asked for and been given permission to retire as director of the Vietnamese Pastoral Center. However, I did not consider myself retired from my vocation of priesthood. I felt it a duty and privilege, whenever possible, to make a spiritual contribution to the Church and the people. So I continue to stay here and to minister only the Vietnamese community at St. Felicitas. This is the reason why I am in residence at the same parish for 40 years. Now it is time to appreciate all your support. Thank you for accepting me just as I am. Thank you for praying for me as I need. Thank you for helping me as I want. Thank you for forgiving me as I make mistakes. Over 40 years, the parishioners of this parish have been so loving and accepting of me that I feel we have shared the journey of life and the journey of faith together. You have helped me to learn and to grow so much through my experiences in this wonderful residence. Therefore I have to give my gratitude to you and St. Felicitas parish. I would like to say Good-bye to all of you who have been living with me at St. Felicitas from 1975 to 2015. May the Peace of Christ which is beyond all understanding, reign in your hearts. Let us remember each other always in our prayers. Lovingly, Fr. Dinh T. Tran

Jubilee Year of Mercy February 28, 2016 Third Sunday of Lent

Pope Francis wants “Twenty-four Hours for the Lord,” around-the-clock availability of the sacrament of reconciliation, implemented worldwide this Friday and Saturday. Celebrated with his oft-recommended “tenderness,” the sacrament is “a source of true interior peace,” says Francis, enabling people “to touch the grandeur of God’s mercy with their own hands” (Misericordiae Vultus, 17). In Luke’s Gospel, Jesus warns us against judging others. Focus instead, Jesus says, on deepening—or restoring—our own relationship with God, for during this Lenten spring-time that Master Gardener can use even life’s manure (the parable’s “fertilizer”) to coax fresh fruit from a tree that seems hopelessly barren—us! Parishes preparing catechumens may choose John’s Gospel, which likewise cautions against judging. Imagine what the Samaritan woman’s lifelong neighbors thought of her multiple relationships. But by discovering Jesus, then sharing her good news—and Jesus—with those very neighbors, she whom they had probably judged quite sinful became instead their evangelist and “missionary of mercy.”

Come and join us for a delicious bowl of soup on

Wednesday evening At 6:00 p.m. in the Gym

Followed by at 7:00 p.m. in the Church

Soup and Stations will be every Wednesday evening during Lent.

My Dear Parishioners, Here are some of my scattered thoughts . . .

1. We are now in the third week of Lent. This third Sunday of Lent is all about second chances. The scripture readings prepare our heart for conversion and repentance. During Jesus’ journey to Jerusalem he teaches and heals . . .God calls us to repent but he is patient and merciful. We need to be patient and merciful with one another.

2. Lenten season is a time to get a deeper relationship with God. I hope you enjoy reading the book “Rediscovering Jesus” and have found the answer to Jesus’ question, “Who do you say that I am?”

3. We need to pray for our brothers and sisters who are in the RCA and Adult Confirmation programs who are preparing for the Easter sacraments. I am very grateful to them for saying “yes” to Christ and the Catholic Church and looking forward to celebrating with them on Easter night.

4. We are in the middle of Lent and also the Jubilee year of Mercy! How many Lenten Journeys have we made? How many Lents will we see in the future? Jesus continues to call us to conversion and repentance.

5. After 40 years being in the parish and ministering to the Vietnamese throughout the diocese, Father Dinh has retired and moved on to his own residence here in San Leandro but he is still in St. Felicitas parish. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Father Dinh for his faithful ministry to God, to the Church and particularly to the Vietnamese Community. Let us pray for God’s blessing of peace, joy and good health in his retirement.
