When an Archbishop is appointed to a new archdiocese, he requests the Pallium from the Holy See. The Pallium is a scarf, or stole-like vestment that is worn over the chasuble when the Archbishop celebrates Mass. It is about two inches wide, and it rests on the shoulders, with a pendant or lappet in the front and the back which hang about 12 inches. When viewed from the front or the back, the Pallium resembles the letter ‘Y’. The Pallium is white, with six black crosses. Three of those crosses, the ones on the front, back and left shoulder, are ornamented with a gold pin, symbolizing the three nails of Christ’s crucifixion. Some of the white wool of the Pallium comes from two lambs that are blessed each year by the Pope on January 21, the feast of St. Agnes. In addition, each of the pendants which hang in front and back are tipped with black satin, resembling the hoof of a lamb; thus the imagery being that of the Archbishop, the chief shepherd of the diocese, carrying a lamb on his shoulders, in imitation of Christ the Good Shepherd. Originally, the Pallium was worn only by the Pope but

now it is given, by him, to metropolitan Archbishops as a sign of their unity with the Pope. Every diocese is part of a collection of dioceses called a Province. In the United States, the Provinces most often, but not always, are designated by state lines. The five dioceses of Illinois, Belleville, Joliet, Peoria, Rockford and Springfield in Illinois, are a Province. Each Province has an Archdiocese, which is called the Metropolitan See. Thus the Archbishop of that diocese is the Metropolitan Archbishop, and he presides over, although has no jurisdiction over, the dioceses of that Province. Archbishop Cupich, then, is the Metropolitan Archbishop of the Province of Chicago. The conferral of the Pallium on a new Archbishop is actually part of the Rite of Installation of a Bishop in his Cathedral Church. That is, when a new Archbishop is received in his Cathedral and he takes possession of the Archdiocese, the Nuncio, who is the Pope’s delegate in the United States, would confer the Pallium as part of the Rite. However, some 32 years ago, Saint John Paul II took the investiture of the Pallium out of

the Rite of Installation, and instead called new Arch-bishops to Rome where he invested them himself on June 29, the Solemnity of Ss. Peter and Paul. Pope Francis, in January of this year, decided that new Archbishops will once again receive the Pallium in their own Cathedrals, in the midst of their own people. Presumably, then, the conferral of the Pallium will again be part of the Rite of Installation of a Bishop in his Cathedral Church. Since Archbishop Cupich has already been installed on November 18, 2014, he will receive the Pallium from the Nuncio at a Mass at Holy Name Cathedral on August 23, 2015. This Mass will not only be a great Archdiocesan celebration for Chicago, but it will also be a Provincial celebration, with the bishops of the other dioceses of Illinois present and concelebrating with Archbishop Cupich. In the opening rites of that Mass, Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, the Papal Nuncio, will invest Archbishop Cupich with the Pallium, a sign of his unity with Pope Francis, and a symbol of his office as Metropolitan Archbishop.

What is a Pallium?

Cuando un arzobispo es nombrado para ocupar una nueva arquidiócesis, solicita el palio de la Santa Sede. El palio es una vestimenta que parece una bufanda; es una banda en forma de collarín, semejante a una estola, que se coloca sobre la casulla, cuando el arzobispo celebra misa. Tiene cerca de dos pulgadas de ancho y se coloca sobre los hombros, con un extremo colgante, o punta decorativa, en el frente y otro en la parte posterior. Cuando se ve desde el frente o desde la parte posterior, el palio se asemeja a la letra "Y".

El palio es de color blanco, con seis cruces negras. Tres de esas cruces, las que están en el frente, la espalda y el hombro izquierdo, están adornadas con un broche de oro, simbolizando los tres clavos de la crucifixión de Cristo.

Parte de la lana blanca del palio proviene de dos corderos que son bendecidos cada año por el Papa el día 21 de enero, durante la festividad de Santa Inés. Además, cada uno de los extremos que cuelgan en la parte delantera y trasera se decoran con una punta de satén negro, semejando la pezuña de un cordero; de este modo la imagen que se forma representa al arzobispo, el principal pastor de la diócesis,

llevando un cordero en sus hombros, como imitación de Cristo, el Buen Pastor. Originalmente, el palio fue usado únicamente por el Papa, pero ahora él lo confiere a los arzobispos metropolitanos como una señal de su unidad con él.

Cada diócesis es parte de un conjunto de diócesis llamada Provincia. En Estados Unidos, las provincias con mayor frecuencia, pero no siempre, están delimitadas por las fronteras estatales. Las cinco diócesis de Illinois, Belleville, Joliet, Peoria, Rockford y Springfield en Illinois, conforman una Provincia. Cada provincia tiene una Arquidiócesis, a la que se denomina la Sede Metropolitana. Así, el arzobispo de esa diócesis es el Arzobispo Metropolitano, y él preside las diócesis de esa Provincia, aunque no tiene jurisdicción sobre ellas. Por lo anterior, el Arzobispo Cupich es el Arzobispo Metropolitano de la Provincia de Chicago.

La imposición del palio a un nuevo arzobispo es en realidad parte del Rito de Instalación de un obispo en su iglesia catedral. Es decir, cuan-do un nuevo arzobispo es recibido en su Catedral y toma posesión de la Arquidiócesis, el nuncio, quien es delegado del Papa en Estados Unidos, conferiría el palio como parte del rito. Sin embargo, hace

treinta y dos años, San Juan Pablo II dejó fuera del Rito de Instalación la investidura del Palio; en su lugar mandó llamar a los nuevos arzobispos a Roma, donde él mismo les imponía el palio el día 29 de junio, durante la solemnidad de los santos Pedro y Pablo. El papa Francisco, en enero de este año, decidió que los nuevos arzobispos reciban el palio, de nueva cuenta, en sus catedrales, en medio de su pueblo. Es de suponer, pues, que la imposición del palio volverá a ser parte del Rito de Instalación de un obispo en su iglesia catedral. Puesto que el arzobispo Cupich ya fue instalado el 18 de noviembre de 2014, recibirá el palio de parte del nuncio apostólico en una misa en la Catedral del Santo Nombre, el 23 de agosto de 2015.

Esta Misa no sólo será una gran celebración arquidiocesana para Chicago; también será una celebración provincial, con los obispos de las otras diócesis de Illinois presentes y concelebrando con el arzobispo Cupich. Durante los ritos de apertura de la misa, el arzobispo Carlo Maria Viganò, Nuncio Apostólico, investirá al arzobispo Cupich con el palio, el cual representa su unidad con el papa Francisco y es un símbolo de su cargo como Arzobispo Metropolitano.

En varias ocasiones nos piden cartas de affidávit para padrinos o madrinas de Bautismo, Comunión o Confirmación. Sólo podemos proveerle cartas a los miembros de la parroquia que conocemos, los que están inscritos, activos, y contribuyendo a la parroquia. ¿Cómo sabe usted que está inscrito? Un miembro inscrito recibe correspondencia de la parroquia. ¿Eres miembro inscrito de la parroquia? Si no lo es, por favor inscríbase. Únicamente tiene que ir a la Oficina Parroquial y pedir que se le registre.

• Los niños y jóvenes que deseen asistir al programa, de-ben ya saber las oraciones básicas (Padrenuestro, Ave María y Gloria) al momento de ser inscritos. Deben venir con sus padres el día de la inscripción para ser evaluados.
