Term 3 Week 9 NEWSLETTER 12th September, 2012
Dear Parents,
“You are the Christ … the Son of Man was destined to suffer much.” Mark 8:27-35 People were uncertain about who Jesus was. Jesus put this question to his disciples: ‘Who do
people say I am?’ They told him John the Baptist, others thought Elijah and others thought
one of the prophets. Jesus asked his disciples: ‘Who do you say I am?’ If this question was
put to you how would you answer this question?
Simon Peter recognized who Jesus was and said, ‘You are the Christ.’ Peter does not
understand the type of Messiah that Jesus is and refuses to accept that Jesus will suffer
rejection and be crucified. Jesus said to them, ‘If anyone wants to be a follower of mine, let
him renounce himself and take up his cross and follow me. For anyone who wants to save his
life will lose it. But anyone who loses it for my sake, and for the sake of the Gospel, will save
it.’
The challenge for us is to walk the same path of service, suffering and self-giving love.
‘Accepting the Cross’ and following Jesus means to live and love as Jesus does.
We ask you, O Lord,
To help us through difficult times
when our troubles seem
almost too much to bear.
Give us the strength to carry on
and to always be compassionate
toward others in need.
We ask this through
Jesus Christ, our Lord.
Amen.

First Holy Communion Candidates Our children preparing for their First Communion have a Blessing Mass this weekend (15th & 16th of September) during the Parish masses. Children can wear their stole and will receive a blessing from Fr. Peter or Fr. Jeff to help them as they prepare for this important Sacrament. Please keep these children in your prayers.
Andrew Chinn Andrew Chinn will be at St. Brigid’s, TOMORROW Thursday 13th September. He will work with each level and finish with a concert. He is a fantastic performer and is awesome with the kids and his religious songs are well known by lots of children. Please feel free to visit his website: www.butterflymusic.com.au

approx 2.05pm in the MPR.
Interschool Sports We had a great Lightning Premiership Day last Friday. The children did a fantastic job representing our school and enjoyed themselves along the way. It was especially great to get a win in the Football against a Mary MacKillop team – our first win for the year! A big THANK YOU must go to Miss Anderson and Mrs Winder for their coaching and organizational prowess during the Interschool Sports season. I know the children really appreciated their efforts.
Athletics Day Please see my blog for information about the recent Officer District Athletics Day.
We now have 7 children representing us at the Regional Athletics day this Friday:
Jordan F., Maddy, Connor J., Jameson, Darcey, Chloe and Declan C.
We wish them well in this more difficult level of competition.

This is an amazing effort!! Our school will be able to order some fantastic new resources for the
children because of this. Thank you to the parents and students who helped with the counting
because we would still be counting now if it wasn’t for their help!
Learning and Teaching - Mrs. Dianne Ahern As we move closer to implementing the Australian Curriculum I would like to remember that key decisions as to its shape come from the Melbourne Declaration, developed and agreed upon in December 2008.
The Preamble to the Declaration reads: As a nation Australia values the central role of education in building a democratic, equitable and just society – a society that is prosperous, cohesive and culturally diverse, and that values Australia’s Indigenous cultures as a key part of the nation’s history, present and future.
The Declaration then establishes two broad goals;
Goal 1: Australian schooling promotes equity and excellence.
Goal 2: All young Australians become:
Successful learners
Confident and creative individuals
Active and informed citizens.
As a Staff we have kept these goals in our focus during any Professional Development Meetings, and feel confident that our curriculum indeed meets 21st Century challenges.
Leader of Intervention and Wellbeing – Mrs. Lisa Piasente
Absences from school
Attending school every day is important for a student’s education and social skills. When students
regularly miss a day they are disadvantaged socially and academically. Missing out on critical
stages of interaction and development with peers can minimise the likelihood of academic success
and compound issues of low self-esteem and social isolation. For example, in class they may miss
something crucial their work group did the day before and this may cause anxiety because they do
not know the expectations of the activity or task. In the playground they may miss out on the rules
of a new game introduced the on the day they were away and this can lead to isolation when
teams have been formed.
Please consider the amount of days that your child has away from school. If they are sick, of
course, they should remain at home. Sometimes family holidays are planned during school time
and this is okay too. However, if you regularly allow your child to remain home for no particular
reason you could be disadvantaging them socially and academically. If you have any concerns
regarding your child’s attendance please see their class teacher.

Leader of ICT and Media Liaison – Mrs. Karen Inguanzo Yet another update on our blogs. If you haven’t been checking them, try to get into the habit. There are some
great things going on in our classrooms. Thank you again to all the people writing comments, the children really
appreciate them.

Getting funding right for special needs students
Governments have never funded students with special needs in Catholic schools in the same way they fund students with the same needs in government schools.
This is despite more and more families with Indigenous, poor or refugee
backgrounds, or with children with disabilities, choosing to send their children to a Catholic school.
As part of their social justice mission, Catholic school communities welcome these students, despite the small amount of funding they receive to support them.
Government funding for Catholic students with special needs often falls short of what students with special needs require.
If these Catholic students were enrolled in government schools, they would receive more funding to support their needs.
It’s about time governments fund students equally based on their needs, and not the school they attend.

Brainteaser The answer to my last brainteaser was
‘Singing in the rain ’. This week’s
brainteaser is:
Loving God,
May we grow in our faith
and be strengthened in life’s journey by
the knowledge that Christ is with us.
Help us to seek your Lord,
by taking time to be in touch
with our own spiritual needs
so that we are able to give ourselves
to others by the way of
our every day actions.
We ask this through Jesus, your Son
Amen. Yours in friendship and unity,
Ken Gale
