That All May Be One
Dear Parents and Friends,
Our wonderful choir finished third at yesterday’s Archdiocesan Choir Festival held in Canberra. Ten schools from around our Archdiocese participated and by all reports were all fantastic. St Francis Xavier Florey were the winners on the day. This is a fantastic result for our students and one of which we can all be so proud of. A HUGE thank you must be extended to Tracy Heslop who has been an amazing support to the choir. Candice Price and Sue Dickson have also been part of the choir development and we thank them as well. St Bernard’s is well and truly on a roll at the moment. From the dulcet tones of our talented singers to the speed, strength and agility of our league boys, we’ve got it all covered!
We wish our rugby league team well as they prepare to compete in the State finals of the Legends of League in Sydney next Wednesday. I will be accompanying the team. In my absence Helene Boller will be Acting Principal.
Today we celebrated the Feast of Mary’s Assumption into Heaven as it is a Holy Day of Obligation for all Catholics all of our students attended the parish mass. The children were very reverent and well behaved. A big thank you to the Year 5 and 6 students who looked after their Kinder and Year 1 buddies at mass. They were very mature and did their job admirably.
Don’t forget tomorrow is………………………………
Pyjama Day! It would be fantastic to see all students wearing their pyjamas tomorrow. Please send in a gold coin to help raise funds for our charitable works.
Have a great week everybody,
Blessings
David

Dear Parents and Friends
On this Feast of the Assumption of Mary we give thanks and praise for her grace-filled and blessed life as we celebrate her crowning glory in her assumption into heaven. Mary is a role model for us all: a woman who is human in every way; a woman who through her openness and trust in God enabled God’s will to be fulfilled in the most extraordinary way. Mary shows us what is possible in relationship with God. She is our hope and our promise of what God can do in our own lives if we but trust and believe.
Advertising in the 2013 Yearbook – expressions of i nterest due tomorrow
Once again we are looking for businesses who would like to advertise in our 2013 Yearbook. For those who are new to our school community, our Yearbook is a high quality, lasting memento of our school for the year. We rely on businesses who would like to advertise with us to assist with the production costs of the Yearbook. Advertisements are printed in full colour in either a half or full A4 size.
For specifics regarding advertising, or to have me allocate your business an advertising space, please email me ([email protected]) by tomorrow Friday 16 August . We would also appreciate parents passing this information on to other people who may be interested in taking up the option to advertise with us. Advertisements need to be submitted to me by Friday 30 August. A letter outlining the specifics of advertising in the Yearbook is available by either emailing me or contacting the front office for a hard copy. Thank you in advance for your support of our school.
Blessings for your week ahead.

Dear Parents and Carers
Next Tuesday 20 August 2013 is the Feast of St Bernard of Clairvaux after whom our school and parish is named. We warmly invite you to join us for prayer at 8.50 am in the Hall.
Bernard, the son a nobleman was born in Fontaines-les-Dijon in 1090 and entered the Abbey of Citeaux in 1112. Bernard was a successful secular scholar, but more and more felt called to the monastic life. At the age of 22, he joined the Cistercian Order, and was so passionate and educated about his faith that he convinced 30 of his closest friends and relatives to join him.
Bernard was sent with 12 monks to establish another monastery in the Diocese of Champagne. This monastery came to be known as Clairvaux, the Valley of Light. The monks lived in great hardship and severe discipline. Bernard realising his error in being so harsh became more lenient and under his guidance the monasteries flourished.
Bernard was sought as an advisor and mediator by the ruling powers of the time. According to some sources, Bernard championed the cause of Jews living in the Rhineland. There were anti-Jewish riots in Mainz, where the Archbishop sheltered many Jews in his palace. Bernard has been remembered among Rhineland Jews and their descendants as an outstanding example of a "righteous Gentile," and many of them (e.g. Bernard Baruch) bear his name.
Although he suffered from constant physical pains and illnesses, Bernard governed his monastery with diligence, grace and humility. During his thirty-eight years as Abbot, he personally established over 65 new monasteries, and still found time to continue his spiritual writing. Saint Bernard laid out a solid foundation for the spiritual life in his works on grace and free will, humility and love.
Saint Bernard died at Clairvaux in 1153. He was canonized by Pope Alexander III in 1174. Pope Pius VII declared him a Doctor of the Church in 1830. Saint Bernard is remembered best for his love of the scriptures, unwavering faith in Christ and Mary, Star of the Sea. He had a particular devotion to Mary and his prayer in honour of Mary – The Memorare is still prayed today.
Prayer to St Bernard
O God, by whose grace your servant Bernard of Clairvaux, Kindled with the flame of your love, became a burning and a shining light in your Church: Grant that we also may be aflame with the spirit of love and discipline, and walk before you as children of light; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen
Peace and blessings
Helene Boller

BOOK WEEK 2013BOOK WEEK 2013BOOK WEEK 2013BOOK WEEK 2013 Hi everyone,
Next week is Book Week and to celebrate this occasion we are having a Book Sharing session in the hall following a short prayer for St Bernard’s Feast Day. This will take place at the beginning of the school day next Tuesday 20 August. There will be a display of work from classes and each grade will present a brief overview of a book they have been studying in class. You are most welcome to join us. Due to a very crowded calendar, this year we will not be having a dress-up parade.
Premier’s Reading Challenge Please be aware that your child is expected to participate in the Premier’s Reading Challenge. All infants students complete the challenge in class as they can have shared readers. Primary students must complete the challenge themselves and all students have been given their personal log in and password. It is a great idea to keep a check on what they are reading, including those in the Primary grades. Read a section with them and talk to them about the book. Your co-operation in this matter is greatly appreciated.

“FluencyFluencyFluencyFluency is the ability to read a text accurately and quickly. Fluent readers
can recognise words automatically and understand their meaning at the
same time. To help develop fluency, children should be encouraged to read
aloud to their parents and even re-read the same story several times.
Parents should read to their children as well as have them follow along as
they read.”
(Taken from “Ten ways parents can help school-age children develop a “Reading Brain”...Scientific Learning Experts.)
Next week I will be drawing prizes for students who have successfully completed the challenge. Signed forms need to be handed to me in the Library. There will be prizes such as posters, short stories, book trinkets, pens, pencils etc. There are only 2 weeks left to complete it. Please help motivate your child to successfully complete the challenge for 2013.
Any queries please do not hesitate to ask. Please also ensure your child has a Library bag and is borrowing each week.
Happy Reading, Dianne Metcalf (Teacher Librarian)
