From the Principal......PRAYERS: We pray for the Madden family (Darcy, 1 Red and Campbell, 2 Blue) on the death of their Grandfather. This week is Organ Donation Week – we remember all those who are waiting for life prolonging organ transplants. We pray too for families who have made the generous decision to donate the organs of loved ones. We o er our sympathy to Morris Gleitzman – well known children’s author. Morris was due to visit our Year 4, 5 and 6 classes last Friday but had to cancel due to the death of his mother.

CONGRATULATIONS: To our 112 Kindergarten students who last week celebrated 100 days of school. They are a wonderful group of students who are enthusiastic learners. Well done to our amazing Kinder teaching team who make every day a great day of learning.

TEACHER ABSENCES: The winter season means that we have a number of sta that are unwell. Every e ort is made to ensure that a relief teacher is employed but relief teachers get sick too! We are very lucky to have a small group of excellent relief teachers and were delighted to learn last week that two new teachers will be available to cover classes.

El KID OPERA AUSTRALIA: The Opera is coming to St Greg’s this Thursday. The students of Years 2, 3 & 4 will hear and see the opera. The classic tale of Billy Goats Gru meets the popular music of Carmen in this opera/fairy-tale mash-up for school children. He’s just a kid. El Kid, in fact, but the other goats don’t think he’s got much to o er. When they all head out to attend Seville’s biggest Fiesta, no one thinks little Diego will have a part to play. But in opera, it’s often the outsider who comes in to save the day. Before the party’s over, Diego will prove he’s no silly goats gru . This 50-minute opera explores the courage you nd when you believe in yourself, using the popular tunes of Bizet’s Carmen to introduce the drama of opera to primary school aged students. Professional singers perform the best bits of Bizet’s catchy tunes with colourful costumes and an enchanting set keeping kids of all ages entertained.

WAKAKIRRI: Year 5 will present their performance on Monday night at Canberra Theatre. I know that the students are very excited. Parents and teachers are looking forward to seeing the production. A huge ‘Chookas’ to everyone who is performing. Thanks to the amazing Year 5 teaching team who have prepared the students with a quiet determination and generous enthusiasm.

FACEBOOK: 13 more followers and we hit 1000!!

HATS ARE BACK: Since we are now in the month of August, students need to wear their hats when playing outside. Any student not wearing their hat will be asked to sit in a shaded area.

SAVE THE DATE: Book Week is coming! Get ready for the parades. Parents and siblings are invited to participate. Parades will be held at MacQuoid Street on Thursday, 24th August and at Lowe Street on Tuesday 22nd August. A mini Book Fair will also be held on the same day at Lowe Street.

Each week we will answer your questions or address concerns you may have to assist with home learning. We will answer one question each for Literacy and Numeracy per week. If you would like to submit a question, please email: - Literacy to [email protected] and - Numeracy to [email protected] include the year group/s of the students so we can answer the question to the appropriate level.

NUMERACYA Kindergarten mum asks - How can I help my child with problem solving at home?

Hi there,Grocery shopping and other routine situations provide many opportunities for problem solving. For example, asking your children to draw up a list of groceries needed for a camping trip can involve calculating days, meals, cost per meal, total cost, etc. Calculating the amount of paint needed to paint a child’s bedroom or the weight and/or monetary value of cupcakes bought for a birthday party provide other examples of problem-solving activities in the home. Regards,Dear Teacher

LITERACYDear St Greg’s mum,I hope that last week’s vocabulary-building hints were useful. Below, I have listed some more ways in which you can help to build your child’s vocabulary:Make the words concrete - when you nd a new word, help your child to visualise it. If the word is a noun, show a picture of it. If it’s an adjective, nd things that could be described using the word (example - if the word was “scratchy”, point out the scratchiness of sandpaper or a man’s chin!)Keep your new words active - when you have learnt a new word, nd many ways to use the word in conversation and experiences over the next week. Play word games - dust o the old Scrabble box and enjoy the fun and quality time with your child. Hangman is also an old favourite that children love!Keep the emails coming! Stay tuned next week for a new question, asked by a Year 3 dad.Regards,Dear Teacher

BOOK WEEK 2017 is fast approaching!

This annual event which is celebrated in August each year highlights the importance of reading and draws on the joy of stories and creativity of Australian books. Book Week is about encouraging students to read; to learn about new books; to share favourite writers and illustrators; to look again at old favourite books in maybe a di erent way; to take time to be alone and just read.

This year’s theme is ‘Escape to Everywhere’ which is currently being explored during Library lessons as a unit focus. Throughout the term, students will be exposed to a range of Children’s Book Council of Australia notable and shortlisted picture books in both print and audio-visual format. Students will also engage in selected learning activities such as book reviews, craft based activities, and utilise new technology tools to promote their work.

Please note: • Lowe Street Book Character Dress up Parade and Book Fair: Tuesday 22nd August. • MacQuoid Street Book Character Dress up Parade and Library Monitor play: Thursday 24th August. The Library Monitor play this year is Alice in Wonderland.

Students are invited to help celebrate Book Week by coming dressed to school as their favourite book character. Students are encouraged to try and bring in a matching book with them to be discussed in class. This will be a celebration and hence no prizes will be awarded.

MACQUOID ST BOOK WEEK COMPETITIONS Students from Year 2 to 6 may choose to enter any of the following competitions:

1. CLASS DOOR POSTER: Some classes will be creating a door poster to celebrate Book Week’s theme ‘Escape to Everywhere’. The class judged as the most creative poster will be able to pick a movie from the Library’s collection to watch in class with popcorn provided. To be displayed during Week 6 and judged on Friday of Week 6.

2. DRAWING COMPETITION: Draw a place to escape inspired by your favourite book. Recreate a scene from your favourite book inside a hot air balloon template. Templates are available from the Mac St Library. Prizes will be awarded for neatest and most creative work. Name and class must be written on the back. Submit to your teacher by Friday, Week 5.

3. ESCAPE TO EVERYWHERE 5 DAY TRIVIA: Each day during Week 6, 4 trivia questions will be added to the double library doors. Students must answer all questions correctly to be in the running for a prize. Students may pick up entry forms from the Library during Week 6 and submit their completed 20 questions to Mrs Greentree by Friday morning of Week 6.

For further information please contact Melissa Greentree (Teacher/Librarian - MacQuoid St) by email [email protected]

As part of our Book Week celebrations at Lowe Street Campus the library will be holding a mini-bookfair. The Carnival company has approached us over recent years to hold a fair. Carnival is an Australian owned and operated company based in Sydney. It o ers one of the most comprehensive ranges of children’s literary resources in Australia.

One of the aims of this fair is to try out this new company and discover what bene ts they may be able to o er to us. This company is a liated with many di erent publishing companies and should be able to provide a very good range of quality children’s books, where the focus is on reading and literature.

As we have already held a successful Scholastic fair earlier this year, we understand that all families may not be able to support this fair through purchases. However, we would appreciate if you could come and view the selection of books and give your views on the quality of books and the fair arrangement to help in our decisions for future years.

The books o ered will be a mixture of non- ction, picture books and chapter books. Most books are slightly discounted on the RRP. The cost of books will begin at $10 but there will be some special packs. There will not be any other material sold at this fair, such a pencils and erasers. Our school will bene t with a commission from the total sales.

Why Carnival Book Fairs?

• They o er a literary, educational focus• Exciting way to promote literacy to students • Fantastic commission structure helps provides the latest releases and core non- ction for our library• The books cover all reading levels and interest areas to entice even the most reluctant readers• Fiction, non- ction, novels, picture books, early chapter books, graphic novels, easy readers and more• CBCA shortlist• Publishers include Allen & Unwin, Australian Geographic History Series, Capstone, Curious Fox , Five Mile Press, Heinemann, Little Hare, Macmillan, Penguin/Pu n, Random House, , Simon and Schuster, Raintree, Walker Books, Weigl and more• Carnival warehouse has over 50,000 titles - thousands more titles available apart from what is included in the Book Fairs

YRS 3 & 4 LEARN TO SWIM PROGRAM

We have had to remind some students that they are not permitted to have their bikes or scooters on the playground or asphalt areas at any time. It is important that students who ride scooters and bikes to school place them in the lockup cage at the bottom gate as soon as they arrive. This is in order to keep all students and their equipment safe at all times. Students can collect their scooters at the end of the day when the teacher on the bottom gate duty accompanies students to that area for pickup and unlocks the cage. Students are encouraged to bring an additional lock to secure their items within the cage if they wish.

MACQUOID BIKES & SCOOTERS

Seven sta from St Gregory’s were joined by teachers from the Anglican School at Googong and Kingsford Smith School in Holt last Saturday in the MacQuoid Street library for the rst of a three-day session to become Certi ed Google Educators. It is worth noting that these teachers give up a signi cant portion of their weekend to develop their digital literacy skills to help improve learning outcomes for our students.- Garreth Wigg, ICT Coordinator.
