ST. BASIL GREEK ORTHODOX CHURCH THE BASILIAN february 2018 Volume 32, Issue 2 The Ultimate Love Story As Valentine’s Day is celebrated this month, we think of romance, love ,and relationships. As some of us will prepare to buy cards, get chocolates and take our significant other out for dinner, I hope we will also recall the greatest love story that has ever existed — the relationship between God and His Church, the relationship between God and us! Often times when we think of the Orthodox Church, we may not always think of it primarily as a love story, but we should. The Scriptures are the primary place where we read about this love story and is itself a love letter from God. As we read in the first book of the Bible, Genesis, God created the world and human beings. This act of creation is an act of love. God was not forced to create us but he does so freely and the reason He does it is just as important—God created us so that we could have a relationship with Him, to experience His love and His joy, and to inherit His kingdom! God could have been content with merely ruling over us and serving Him, but no, He wanted us to participate in His life, which is eternal love and joy. This idea of the relationship between God and us as a love story is further shown in the book of Ephesians where St. Paul says the following: Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word…for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church” (Ephesians 5:25-26, 29). We are the Church and Christ’s love for us is a model for the relationship a husband should have with his wife! Christ and the Church are themselves husband and wife, with Christ being the groom and the Church being the bride as we see in the following passages: “Let us be glad and rejoice and give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and His wife has made herself ready.” (Revelations 19:7). The Lamb is Christ, and His wife is the Church. We also read in the Gospel of John, “He who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice” (John 3:29). In this passage, the bridegroom is Christ, the bride is the Church and the friend of the bridegroom, the best man, is John the Baptist! The idea of a love story between God and His people can also be seen with the description of heaven as a wedding banquet. “The kingdom of heaven is like a certain king who arranged a marriage for his son,” (Matthew 22:2). The son is Jesus, the father is God the Father and the bride is the Church. Of course, the ultimate expression of God’s love is when Christ died on the Cross for us, showing us that the highest form of love is sacrificial. “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends (John 15:13).” This month as we celebrate Valentine’s Day, let us also reflect on the greatest love story ever told found in the Scriptures and celebrated at every Divine Liturgy. Let us never forget God’s immeasurable and unfathomable love by reading and reflecting on the Scriptures regularly. Let us not think of our Orthodox Christian faith as a list of rules but rather as a loving relationship between the God who we describe constantly in our liturgical services as “the lover of humankind”. When we understand God, our Church and our faith in this light, we will, I believe, love God more, and will be even more dedicated to Him. With love in Christ, Fr. Panagiotis

The Ultimate Love Story

As Valentine’s Day is celebrated this month, we think of romance, love ,and relationships.

Paul says the following: “Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word…for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church” (Ephesians 5:25-26, 29).

“Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends (John 15:13).”

This month as we celebrate Valentine’s Day, let us also reflect on the greatest love story ever told found in the Scriptures and celebrated at every Divine Liturgy. PROGRESS OF 2ND MINISTRY LEADER SEARCH

As was mentioned in the December issue of The Basilian, the 2nd Ministry Leader Staffing Vision Team—comprised of Teri Blum (Team Leader), George Kaplanis, Maria Karapanos, Dr. Raymond Rishwain, and Tim Wiesner—was formed to identify which of the three ministry positions would be best to pursue. The Vision Team, with the approval of Fr. Pete and the Parish Council at their meeting in December, recommended that the best choice for our Parish would be a 1) 2nd Priest; 2) a Lay Assistant; and 3) Youth Director in that order. Fr. Pete will speak to His Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos about the Parish Council’s decision. Father has also been authorized to begin reaching out to possible candidates. The Vision Team is scheduled to meet again to create a job description and finalize compensation plan, both for Parish Council approval, ideally by February. The Parish Council will ultimately make the hire when the time comes.

As was mentioned before, the candidate must have an Orthodox Theological degree and must be able to work with youth.

We ask that you continue to pray that our Lord will provide the best person for our parish!

2018 PARISH COUNCIL AND EXECUTIVE OFFICERS

We wish to officially share the exciting news of the 2018 Parish Council and Executive Officers:

The parishioners who were elected this past December for the 2018 Parish Council are: Viviana Bandy, Emily Clifford, Rick Fogle, Chris Papas and Cynthia Pascarella

The following are continuing their terms: Donna Vasiliou, Ken Jochimsen, Tim Wiesner, Kathy Kaplanis, Maria Karapanos, and Lori Koulouros

On Sunday, January 14th, following the Divine Liturgy, members of the newly elected Parish Council elected the following to executive officer positions: PC President: Donna Vasiliou; Vice President: Ken Jochimsen; Treasurer: Tim Wiesner; Secretary: Viviana Bandy

Since only 5 parishioners ran for 6 spots this past December, the Parish Council, according to the Regulations of the Archdiocese, will need to appoint one more parishioner to fill the 12th spot on the Council.

Our annual Crab Feed Dinner/Auction/Dance is just a few weeks away! Committee members are in full swing as we prepare for our Feb. 24th event! Ticket prices are $60 per person. This includes the dinner, no host cocktails, the auction, and dancing. The silent auction is what makes this such a fun evening! I enjoy the bidding “wars.” All this benefits our children! If you would like to make a donation, attend our event, or need more information, please call me at 478-5252. Thank you in advance.

By the time you read this, the 3-year-old and the Pre-K classes will have attended the Greg & Steve concert at the Faye Spanos Concert Hall (U.O.P. campus) on January 31st. The children listen to their music often in the classroom. Greg & Steve have been very popular for years and have entertained in Stockton for over 25 years! We have attended most of those years, but did not attend last year. I had parents request we go again, so we are! I will be able to include the fun we had in my next article! MANY thanks to Willy and Silvia Heinrich (Yia Yia and Papou to Ivy in the 3’s class) for the installation of new carpeting in our 2 and 3 year old classroom’s lofts! They donated their time (and materials) during our break to make them look new again! Thank you so very much!! Grandparents are wonderful at volunteering and these two fabulous people are #1 !!

It is time to REGISTER your child for school year 2018-2019!Schedule for Returning, Church members and Alumni:

*Returning students begins Feb. 12th ongoing *Church Members begins Feb. 20th ongoing *Alumni families begins Feb. 21st ongoing

You may pick up an enrollment form from Eleni in the Church office or from me in the Preschool office. Complete the form and be sure to include your child’s $200 Registration fee. This is on a FIRST COME basis (based on the date above). We are projecting a full enrollment for next school year so be sure you mark your calendar.

Angel Babies ministry continues to meet the third Tuesday of the month in the fellowship hall. Recently, we donated close to 100 bereavement gowns to several vendors. First, we donated 40 gowns to West Coast Angel Babies, a 504(c)3 organization which distributes bereavement gowns to hospitals throughout California. Dena Mariani dropped off 18 gowns to the Maternity Center at Sutter Tracy Hospital. Patty Manuse gifted 8 gowns to San Joaquin General. Following a presentation to Philoptochos on Saturday, January 13th, 12 gowns were donated to Alma Ochoa from P. L. Fry and Son Funeral Home in Manteca.

We are grateful to our Angel Babies volunteers for all the beautiful handiwork you do: RoseMary Siliverdis, Joan Collins, JoAnne Panagopoulos, Mary Carroll Bandy, Dena Mariani, Ruth Gonzales, Bobbe Xenos, Kathleen Galas, Rodama Veziris, Dessie Ksidakis, and Patty Manuse.

vasilopeta -- st. basil nameday

January 1st, 2018The nameday of our beloved patron saint, St. Basil the Great

It was a blessed day with our loving shepherd, His Eminence Gerasimos from the Metropolis of San Francisco. Pictured are the devoted parishioners who prepared the delicious vasilopeta: Gayle Maduros, Niki Tsirelis, Maria and Steve Facaros; our incredible Past Parish President, Veronica Gatrousis; the lucky coin winner -- our devoted Youth Dance leader, Maria Karapanos; Bill Veziris, Vaso Koutsoulis, and Bill Panagopoulos; and adorable Evan Sotiras, who truly enjoyed the delicious blessed bread.

THE BASILIAN FEBRUARY 2018

Hello Families of St. Basil!

The blessed journey of Great Lent is ahead of us, beginning with Forgiveness Sunday on February 18,th ,, concluding with the celebration of Pascha on April 8th. We would like to invite all you and your children, grandchildren, godchildren…any and all to participate in this beautiful time in our Church! Below are some great thoughts regarding Lent and Families from the Greek Orthodox Religious Education Ministry. On the goarch.org website, you will find plenty of resources for your entire family and information on the Lenten season. Religious Ed Directors: Lindsay Wiesner, Anna Zoi, and Ruth Alexander

Preparing Your Family For Great Lent

seeing Great Lent as opportunity, not as an imposition

the importance of simplifying and ‘slowing down’ during Great Lent

there’s more to Great Lent than avoiding certain foods—there are opportunities for prayer and charitable works that round out the fast.

ways parents can make the Church come alive in the home during Great Lent. Parents, you are leaders, the primary role models for your children’s spiritual development. What an awesome responsibility!

Determine when your family will attend the extraordinary Lenten services—Pre-Sanctified Liturgy, Salutations to the Theotokos, etc.

Determine when of-age members of the family can schedule, and prepare for, the sacrament of Holy Confession during Great Lent.

Remembering that we experience Great Lent also as united members of the Body of Christ, are there ways to enhance your f amily’s Great Lent journey by interacting with fellow ‘travelers,’ sharing joys, struggles, and other topics—perhaps, over a meal of lentil soup?

Prayer for ChildrenO Lord, help me not to want to have my own way all the time. Help me to love others. Keep me from being jealous, and help me to know when I am wrong.

The end of 2017 and beginning of 2018 were busy for all of us, I’m sure. Philoptochos sponsored the last two Fellowship hours after Liturgy in December and also the Reception on New Year’s Eve. Then we set up the one year memorial for our dear sister, Kathy Walton, sponsored by her husband and son, Steve and Nick. Remember, we are happy to help with your sponsorship of Fellowship after Liturgy. You can contact me at 510-314-2368 to make arrangements.

The annual crab feed will be held on February 3. This is Philoptochos’ biggest fund raiser of the year and it funds many of our philanthropic works throughout the year. Your attendance is appreciated.

On Meatfare Sunday, February 11, Philoptochos will have a luncheon. Daughters of Penelope will have a bake sale that will also serve as dessert! Tickets are $12 for adults and $5 for children. On Tuesday February 14th at 10:00 a.m., Valentines Day, will be our next general meeting. We will use the Church hall. I hope all members will be able to attend. If you RSVP there will be a Valentine surprise for you!

Remember that Great Lent begins February 19th this year. On Wednesday February 21, at 6:00 p.m. , Philoptochos will sponsor the pre-sanctified pot luck. Everyone is invited to bring their best Lenten dish. On Sunday February 25, the Sunday of Orthodoxy, Philoptochos will pass a tray for OCMC.

Your generosity is so helpful to this important ministry.

Jimmy the Greek Argiros hosted a luncheon after the yearly memorial of his beloved wife, Jeanne. As usual, the gracious host had food and drink and great desserts at his lovely home at Del Webb in Manteca. Everyone had a wonderful time. Memory eternal!

BLESSED

Yesterday I received a bracelet for Christmas From two friends who dropped it off at my door. On the bracelet is simply engraved BLESSED. On my front door, hung a stocking this morning that Another friend had left full of little items, candy, and fruit. I am also wearing a “K” necklace picked out just for me. As I look at the gifts and treats that friends and family have given to me. I realize I really am BLESSED. I have a home that is small but pretty and peaceful. I have a part-time job that is challenging but gives me purpose And helps others. I have material things that provide warmth and comfort. And make my home “homey.” I have a lot of windows that look outside where I see and hear the sun and birds. I have a reliable car that gets me to where I need to go. I have a Church family and a wonderful Bible study group Who have supported me through the worst times. I have friends and neighbors who are willing to go out of their way to help me. I have a good mind and a kind heart - both of which I try to use wisely. Yes, I have some challenges too that I deal with daily Especially at night. Yet I know that each of us has challenges in life. Some even have to go at it all alone. And although I am physically alone often, I am not alone in my life. For I have the most important thing of all Love From God, family, and friends who accept me as I am. I know on this Christmas morning, as we celebrate the greatest gift and love of all Our Savior, And with all that I have, I am Truly BLESSED.
