SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
JANUARY 14, 2018
1 026Ann
FROM THE PASTOR
KEEPING IT GREEN
Today we return to
Ordinary Time and
the liturgical color
green—the color of growing things, things
with life coursing
through them, things
that are not done yet. Even though we have little
green around us during this time of year, perhaps
Winter is precisely the time to let the Liturgy lead
us and remind us that growth and being open to
growth is the ordinary experience of an ordinary
Christian.
BUT THEN, “IT’S NOT EASY
BEING GREEN” - This week presents several challenges
and opportunities to ask God
for the grace to keep the
practice of our faith green:
1) Migrants & Refugees
(today); 2) Racial Justice and
Relations this Monday
(January 15) with Dr. King Day; 3) Christian Unity
Week starting this Thursday (January 18); and 4) the National March for life this Friday
(January 19).
JUST DO THE RIGHT THING - I do not think that the late Mrs. Rosa Parks knew when she resisted
injustice on December 1, 1955 that God was going
to use her ordinary act to
transform her ordinary
pastor, Dr. Martin Luther
King, Jr., into a leader
for civil rights in our
nation. As we join
tomorrow with other
Americans in celebrating
the life and work of Dr. King, which moved our
society toward a more perfect union in the 1950’s
and 1960’s, we remember that we simply don’t
know which of our “ordinary” acts God is going to
render extraordinary through Grace. So, let us do
the right thing, and leave the outcome up to God.
SALT & LIGHT
Which brings us to
the ongoing work of
being the salt of the
earth and the light
in darkness as we
take up our share of
the burden in helping “to form a more perfect
union” in our community, country and world. We
are not to be passive, but to do the right thing, and
leave the results up to the Lord. We celebrate not
merely Dr. King’s dream, but perhaps even more
so his method: massive, active, provocative and
non-violent resistance to evil. This week let’s do
something good and resist something evil. Let’s be
the change we want to see.
DOING GOOD LOCALLY - We are blessed to
have so many ways to
do good in our
community both
financially and as
volunteers: A Baby’s
Breath, Code Blue,
St. Mary’s Shelter, Good
Samaritan Shelter, The
House Phoenixville
Women’s Outreach, Mom’s House, PACS, Orion,
the Food Ministries at St. Peter’s Episcopal
Church, The Clinic, The HOME at Ann’s Heart,
and Alianzas.
APOSTOLIC VISITS – Let’s keep Pope Francis in
prayer this week as he visits the Church and the
people of Chile and Peru.

Weekday Cancellations Due to Weather Our parish will cancel any scheduled 8:00 AM weekday Mass when, due to inclement weather, the Phoenixville Area School District either cancels school or delays the opening of school. To find out Mass status on a snowy or icy day, you can go online to www.myholyfamilyschool.org or www.KYW1060.com (Phoenixville’s school closing number is #856.) We will cancel weekly Eucharistic Adoration when such a closure or delayed opening falls on a Wednesday.
CHRISTIAN UNITY – The annual
Week of Prayer for Christian
Unity will begin this Thursday
(January 18) and conclude next
Thursday (January 25) on the
Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul.
Thankful for the unity that exists
among Christians in our town, we
beg the Lord to “form a more perfect union”
among us in Phoenixville. The theme for this
year’s celebration is “Your Right Hand, O Lord,
Glorious in Power” (Exodus 15:6).
The bitterly cold
weather certainly
brings to mind the
work of the Code
Blue Overnight Emergency Warming Center
which takes place in Sacred Heart Church Hall.
While financial and material support are always
needed and welcomed, the need for volunteers
continues. To find out which volunteer times are
open and/or to volunteer go to http://signup.com/
go/BeYuyzz. For more information contact Gary
Russell [email protected] or 610-420-7224.

Migrants and Refugees - In 1915, amid the chaos and global suffering of World War I, Pope Benedict XV called for Catholics to stop, become aware of, pray for and act to help all those
displaced and without homes due to war, civil unrest or economic conditions. “Welcoming, Protecting, Promoting And Integrating Migrants And Refugees” is the theme announced by Pope Francis for today’s 104
th celebration of
the World Day of Migrants and Refugees.
