Principles of Holiness

Holiness means that we are not to love this ungodly world system,

identify with it, become attached to the things in it, or participate in its

sinful pleasures and activities.

““Know ye not that the friendship of the Know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? Whosoever world is enmity with God? Whosoever

therefore will be a friend of the world is therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God” (James 4:4).the enemy of God” (James 4:4).

Page 21: Holiness Pastor Rex Deckard Calvary Apostolic Church.

We specifically need to avoid three major areas of temptation and sin:

lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, and pride.

“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the

Father is not in him.” (I John 2:15).

The purpose of holiness standards is to protect us in one or more of these areas.

Page 22: Holiness Pastor Rex Deckard Calvary Apostolic Church.

Holiness involves both Holiness involves both the the inner person and the inner person and the outer personouter person (I (I Corinthians 6:19-20; I Corinthians 6:19-20; I Thessalonians 5:23).Thessalonians 5:23).

Page 23: Holiness Pastor Rex Deckard Calvary Apostolic Church.

We are to perfect holiness in We are to perfect holiness in our lives by cleansing ourselves our lives by cleansing ourselves

of filthiness both of the spirit of filthiness both of the spirit and of the flesh and of the flesh

(II Corinthians 7:1). (II Corinthians 7:1).

For example, lustful thoughts as For example, lustful thoughts as well as acts of adultery are sinful well as acts of adultery are sinful (Matthew 5:27-28), and hatred as (Matthew 5:27-28), and hatred as

well as murder is sinful well as murder is sinful (I John 3:15). (I John 3:15).

The Purpose for Holiness

The first reason for holiness is

to please Godto please God. .

We belong to God in a double sense: by creation

and by redemption.

Page 26: Holiness Pastor Rex Deckard Calvary Apostolic Church.

““What? know ye not that your What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which Ghost which is in you, which you have of God, and ye are you have of God, and ye are

not your own? For ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and glorify God in your body, and

in your spirit, which are in your spirit, which are God’s” God’s”

(I Corinthians 6:19-20).(I Corinthians 6:19-20).

Page 27: Holiness Pastor Rex Deckard Calvary Apostolic Church.

The late Pres. Eisenhower, on his death bed, made this

statement, "Go over the plans with me again. I want to make

sure I'm right.”

Page 28: Holiness Pastor Rex Deckard Calvary Apostolic Church.

The second reason for holiness is The second reason for holiness is to to communicate Christ to others. communicate Christ to others.

People will be attracted to Christ People will be attracted to Christ only to the extent that they see only to the extent that they see Christ in us. People who are Christ in us. People who are

dissatisfied with their worldly life dissatisfied with their worldly life and who seek salvation will only be and who seek salvation will only be attracted to a church that is clearly attracted to a church that is clearly

different from the world. different from the world.

Page 29: Holiness Pastor Rex Deckard Calvary Apostolic Church.

“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in

heaven” (Matthew 5:16). “Abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul, having your

conduct honorable among the Gentiles, that when they speak

against you as evildoers, they may, by your good works which they

observe, glorify God in the day of visitation”

(I Peter 2:11-12, NKJV).

Page 30: Holiness Pastor Rex Deckard Calvary Apostolic Church.

The third reason for holiness is The third reason for holiness is to to benefit ourselves, both now and for benefit ourselves, both now and for eternity. eternity. From the spiritual point of From the spiritual point of view, living for God is the logical, view, living for God is the logical, reasonable, and expected thing to reasonable, and expected thing to

do do (Romans 12:1).(Romans 12:1).

The life of holiness brings great benefits in this life—physically, mentally, and spiritually—and it

leads to eternal life.

Page 31: Holiness Pastor Rex Deckard Calvary Apostolic Church.

We pursue holiness because we are a people peculiar to God (Jer 13:11, Titus 2:11)

Prince Charles was taught every day , as a young boy, that he was not a commoner. He was reminded that he could not wear the same kind of clothing other boys wore; nor use the same manners or conversation they used. He was in

training his whole life. Such is the Church.

Page 32: Holiness Pastor Rex Deckard Calvary Apostolic Church.

How do we pursue holiness? How do we pursue holiness?

Sanctification is brought about Sanctification is brought about by dedication and consecration. by dedication and consecration. This sets us apart and separates This sets us apart and separates

us from all others. God has set us us from all others. God has set us apart through a process of apart through a process of

sanctification.sanctification.

Page 33: Holiness Pastor Rex Deckard Calvary Apostolic Church.

Example: Mendel's law tells us a child inherits characteristics of two

generations-parents and grandparents.

Christ's parents were God(divine) and Mary(human). She was a very special

person, a virgin chosen among the others. The Holy Ghost overshadows this holy woman. Jesus was a perfect human. He was perfect God and perfect man. Rom

1:3- A mixture of humanity and divinity.

Page 34: Holiness Pastor Rex Deckard Calvary Apostolic Church.

In other words, we have got to “get” our holiness from God, as He is the

source.

David Bernard put it this way,

Page 35: Holiness Pastor Rex Deckard Calvary Apostolic Church.

Holiness is not a means of earning Holiness is not a means of earning salvation but a result of salvation. As salvation but a result of salvation. As such, it comes by grace through faith such, it comes by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8-9). Holiness does not (Ephesians 2:8-9). Holiness does not come by works of the flesh but only come by works of the flesh but only by submission to the Holy Spirit’s by submission to the Holy Spirit’s

leadership. We cannot manufacture leadership. We cannot manufacture our own holiness; we can only be our own holiness; we can only be

partakers of God’s holiness partakers of God’s holiness (Hebrews 12:10).(Hebrews 12:10).

Page 36: Holiness Pastor Rex Deckard Calvary Apostolic Church.

Holiness is both instantaneous Holiness is both instantaneous and progressive. As Christians and progressive. As Christians

we received we received immediate immediate sanctificationsanctification (separation from (separation from

sin) when we repented, were sin) when we repented, were baptized in Jesus’ name, and baptized in Jesus’ name, and

received the Holy Spirit received the Holy Spirit (I Corinthians 6:11).(I Corinthians 6:11).

Page 37: Holiness Pastor Rex Deckard Calvary Apostolic Church.

Progressive holiness is aided by Progressive holiness is aided by teachers. Who are the teachers. Who are the

teachers?teachers?

1)the Bible

(2) spiritual leadership

(3) the indwelling Holy Spirit

Page 38: Holiness Pastor Rex Deckard Calvary Apostolic Church.

The Bible is our final authority. God does not give human beings the right to change His message, nor will the indwelling Spirit speak contrary to the written Word He Himself inspired.

Then

• 2. Avoid anything that is not beneficial to us (I Corinthians 6:12; 10:23). We should abstain from things detrimental to us physically, mentally, or spiritually. We should lay aside every “weight,” or hindrance, as well as outright sin (Hebrews 12:1).
