One of these was of a talking cat which was odd to say the least; another was of a previous Hawks player which got me lile bit star-stuck (what can I say, it is the best team aſter all!). My most memorable moment would have to be geng stuck in the elevator because I didn't know the security pass number. Lastly, on the Friday I was able to write a couple of mini pieces for the weekend paper in the 'Love Its' secon and put together quite a few secons on different sports of the upcoming London Olympics which made for a good ending to the week. Dear Friends, In the last newsletter and at the last PFA Meeting I announced some changes that are happening at St Andrews Christian College for next year.

We are changing the school from a Primary/Secondary School into a Junior/Middle/Senior School model.

There are many reasons for this change, but the main ones are to further grow the College and grow our students, providing the best Christian education that focuses on Teaching and Learning excellence.

There is a saying “when the wind of change is happening, some build shelters, others erect windmills.”

Our changes open up more opportunities for our students to be the young people God wants them to be. We want our students to be the best they can be educationally, but also strong in their convictions, to be life-long learners with life skills, being open to be daily transformed by God to His will and His way.

Together with you, we are building the leaders of our future, who will inspire others by their daily living and actions in whatever capacity and wherever God plants them.

If you weren’t able to make the last PFA meeting and hear about the exciting changes at St Andrews Christian College for next year, I invite you to come and hear about these changes on

Friday 29th June at 2:30pm in the Staff Room

We, too are never alone. Even when we don’t know it, our

Heavenly Father is watching over us, sitting on a stump

beside us, leading us and guiding us.

Midst our own difficult times, changes and growth, He never leaves us. Likewise at St Andrews Christian College, He is leading us – every step of the way in our exciting changes and growth.

We are victorious in our journey, because we belong to God. We are His children and St Andrews Christian College is His school.

“... in all these things we are more than conquerors through

him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death

nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor

the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor

anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us

from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.“

Romans 8:35 – 39

Enjoy the holiday break! All students are to be back to school on Monday 23rd July, 2012. The staff will be attending a full week of Professional Development both in and out of the school.

See you all next term for another exciting term of learning and growing.

Yours for the kingdom,

Catriona Wansbrough

FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Cherokee Legend – Author unknown Do you know the legend of the Cherokee Indian youth’s rite of passage? His father takes him into the forest, blindfolds him and leaves him alone. He is required to sit on a stump the whole night and not remove the blindfold until the rays of the morning sun shine through it. He cannot cry out for help to anyone. Once he survives the night, he is a MAN.

He cannot tell the other boys of this experience because each lad must come into manhood on his own. The boy is naturally terrified. He can hear all kinds of noises. Wild beasts must surely be all around him. Maybe even some human might do him harm. The wind blew the grass and earth and shook his stump, but he sat stoically, never removing the blindfold. It would be the only way he could become a man! Finally, after a horrific night the sun appeared and he removed his blindfold.

It was then that he discovered his father sitting on the stump next to him. He had been at watch the entire night, protecting his son from harm.

A Note on College Finances The media has recently been reporting on the terrible situation facing parents and students at Mowbray College. In light of this Catriona and I thought it would be wise to make some clear statements about the financial situation here at St Andrews to allay any concerns this raises in our own community.

I have no special knowledge of the circumstances at Mowbray but the two key pieces of information that have been reported are a high level of unpaid fees combined with a high debt to student ratio. On both of these metrics St Andrews is doing well. Our level of unpaid fees has been trending down for the last two years as Darren, our Business Manager, has been improving invoicing mechanisms and our debt to student ratio is currently on par with the industry standard threshold. In addition, the College recently underwent a very thorough, independent, twenty day audit as part of the process of changing auditors. This uncovered no significant problems in the financial management of the College. Finally, we are forecasting a modest cash profit for the 2012 calendar year.

From a financial perspective the biggest risk to the College (or any school of our size) is attempting to grow too quickly. The temptation to take on debt to build impressive buildings is strong but the College Board is resisting this path, opting instead for a program of sustainable capital development. Reports like those about Mowbray are an effective demonstration as to why we believe this is the wiser course.

The summary financial position of the College is an open book to anyone in the community who is interested. Our most recent financial statements are on the College web site and presentations have been given at both the AGM and a meeting of the PFA. If anyone has any concerns on this front and would like to talk them through please feel free to contact me - my details are available at reception. James Bligh (College Board Chairman)

Student Leadership and Prayer Two of the most important priorities to us at St Andrews are student leadership and prayer. One of the regular opportunities to do this throughout the year is the student led ‘See You At The Pole’ prayer morning. Students around Australia gather in the early morning on the same date to pray at their school flagpole. This year the event will be held on August 23rd and any students who want to help in running SYATP at St Andrews can talk to Sam Tucker or Sarah Longden.

Another regular way we recognise our student leaders is through the ADF Long Tan Leadership and Teamwork Awards. These are presented annually at the College’s Celebration and Thanksgiving Night to one student from each of Years 10, 11 and 12. The students who receive them have shown initiative, teamwork, leadership, resourcefulness, values, cooperation, or communication skills through their involvement within the school or in the wider community. We would love to recognise and encourage any students who are demonstrating some of these attributes in community activities that we aren’t aware of at school. So please let us know of anyone you think deserves to be nominated for one of these awards. Greg Crotty-VCE Coordinator

Indoor Soccer Tournament Update Last Thursday, the Barton Gypsies defeated the Deakin Wolverines 5-0. Adrian Cini starred with three goals, and Joshua Hooimeyer (Rebels) played a superb fill-in role for the Gypsies. Then, last Friday, the Deakin Jellyfish defeated the Parkes Poisonous Potatoes 2-0. Jenny Min scored both goals. The win means the Jellyfish qualify for the finals. Yesterday, the Parkes Thunder defeated the Gypsies 4-1, with Tim Minett and Nathan Beovich sharing the goals for the Thunder. Daniel Broadbridge - Yr8 Teacher

Year 1 Paramedic Incursion Year 1's had a paramedic come to school to teach them what to do in an emergency which was how to stop, think and stay safe in situations. The children role played calling an ambulance by dialling '000' and how to respond whilst remembering to "NOT HANG UP". They all had the opportunity to get into the ambulance and ask questions. They saw a video on an ambulance attending an accident and listened to a live recording of an actual emergency. There was a lot of learning and thinking and doing taking place.

Some of the comments about the incursion from the children included:

Senam (1A): "I enjoyed the movie about Stretch (the Paramedic Dog) and the flashing lights."

Jessica (1A): "I loved sitting inside the Ambulance."

Max (1V): "I loved listening to the siren and the role playing activity."

Tamar (1V): "I liked the movie with Stretch helping the injured child and making him feel better."

Yr 5/6 SSV Interschool Sport Last Thursday Year 5 and 6 students headed to various locations and competed against other local schools in their chosen sport. Mr Wade and Mrs Heckathorn coached the girls and mixed netball teams. Both teams played well and special congratulations go to the mixed team for becoming runners up on the day. Mr Ferguson coached the boys and

girls soccer teams. Both the teams competed really hard and the girls team managed to come runners up on the day. Mr Lee took on the challenge to coach the boys and girls volleystars team. Students had fun playing volleystars and

managed to pull in a few wins. I was with the boys football team and we had a fun day. The boys fought hard and persevered when things got tough. Lots of boys in our team were competing in their first ever football game and I am well pleased with the effort they showed on the day. Overall it was a great day of physical activity for all the Year 5 and 6 students. Thank you to all the coaches and parent helpers for making it a successful day. Mr Daniel Idrees PE Teacher

UPCOMING EVENTS

Drummers Lunch Term 2, 2012

‘Eat the Beat’

We have an exciting new initiative for the students involved in percussion ensemble and also private drum tuition this year called The Drummers Lunch!

This ongoing event will be held each end of term at lunchtime to provide opportunity for performance and to showcase the drumming talent to the wider school community. A gold coin donation for all upon entry to be given to a charity of the drummers choosing and an edible treat at the end to top off a half hour concert! This event is open to all parents and staff. The first concert I will be performing some tracks on Kit with a special guest to be announced. A number of

students plus the percussion ensemble will also showcase their skills. I look forward to seeing as many students, staff and parents there as possible for the launch of this ongoing event!
