FROM THE PRINCIPAL NOTICES

Dear Friends,

It has been a wonderful and very busy start to the school year. It is good to see so many happy faces in the College and the engaged learning that is taking place.

People from outside the College often comment on the high calibre of our students, so it was lovely to receive the following letter about the beautiful behaviour of our students at the Inter-school Swimming Carnival last week.

“I am a parent of a child from a school in Ferntree Gully and have nothing at all to do with your school, nor know anyone there. My daughter took part in the school swimming sports today. I had to write and share how impressed I was with students from your school today. Even though some of your students were struggling with their race, the support and kind words of encouragement blew me away. They should be commended for their great attitude. The school should be proud of what fantastic students you have and obviously what your teachers are modelling for them.”

Next week Brad Huddleston is back with us, all the way from Virginia, USA! Brad is an author, media producer and evangelist and he will spend the next two weeks with us talking to students, parents and staff about social media/facebook/cyber bullying. He is also going to give a talk, open to the PUBLIC, on Wednesday 6th March at 7.30pm in Rembrandts (gold coin donation). All parents and teachers will be given information about how to control the use of technology in their families. Follow this link for more information: http://youtu.be/OtfX84-6qS8

Whilst in residence at St Andrews, Brad will be running a media camp for selected students in Middle School. The focus of this camp is to produce a short film on the effects of social media on youth today.

It is wonderful to support you in the education of your child. What a privilege and an enormous responsibility we have to help mould and guide your child – not just for today and the future, but for eternity.

The following devotion in Word For Today (9/2/13) is a great one for parents:

Your child is already in the process of becoming the kind of person he or she is eventually going to be. So, to bring them up right and to make them proud of you, live by these six principles:

1. Assure them of your love. They need to know your love is given, and it will never be withdrawn because of their appearance, achievements or actions. Let them know they are loved for who they are, and that their worth in your eyes is never in question.

2. Build strong character and godly values. ‘Direct your children onto the right path, and when they are older they will not leave it.’ (Proverbs 22:6 NLT)

3. Establish clear boundaries. And be consistent in maintaining them. Do children like rules? No. But your first goal is not to make your child happy, it’s to teach them responsibility. Happiness will follow.

4. Help them to discover their potential. That means listening, observing, and once their talents are identified, helping to develop them. ‘We have different gifts, according to the grace given us….’(Romans 12:6 NIV)

5. Don’t try to duplicate yourself through them. God gave each of your children their own unique makeup and personality. So don’t try to make them something that God and the rest of us don’t need one more of.

6. Encourage them to pursue their life’s vision. ‘….Your young men (and women) shall see visions.’ (Joel 2:28 KJV) Don’t pour cold water on the fire of their enthusiasm, fan it.

May you know His blessing and direction in your family. Yours for the Kingdom,

Catriona Wansbrough

Join the Gardening Green Team We would like to invite you to join the College Gardening Green Team, who will assist Mr Landman (Grounds & Maintenance Manager) in maintaining and developing the gardens around the College with regular watering, weeding and other interesting gardening activities. It is hoped that a team of parents would be able to spend a few afternoons each term working together around the College with a focus on the garden areas. The work undertaken by the team will be very beneficial to the College and is another way of working off Parent Participation hours. Please email Mr Landman [email protected] or leave your name at the office to indicate your interest in the Gardening Green Team.

St Andrews Run 4 Fun The Fun Run in Term 2 on Friday 26th April will be held during school time between recess and lunchtime. This will be our major fundraiser for the year. To maximise profits for the school the PFA will be running the event ourselves. To accomplish this we will require the help of many parents. We are on the lookout for businesses/parents to sponsor some prizes for the Fun Run.

If you can help with sponsorship please email the PFA at [email protected] Treasurer Wanted At the PFA meeting last Tuesday the position of Treasurer was declared vacant, ie. we don’t have a treasurer! The position requires the ability to look after the financial records of the association and prepare simple monthly reports. It also requires some availability to be at school to help with the daily financial running of the association (floats, counting, invoices etc.) and the planning/implementation of upcoming events. We require someone who can fulfil the whole role. If you are in the position to help please email [email protected]

Parenting Library The parenting library, located in the school office, is open for business! We’ve been blessed with a new bookshelf and a number of new books (Christian based parenting books). Parents can borrow up to 2 books at a time for a period of 2 weeks. We appreciate your prompt return of the books.

Calling all buskers, face painters and balloon sculptors - wanted for PFA

Family Picnic We are looking for buskers, face painters and balloon sculptors to participate in the PFA Family Picnic on Saturday 2nd March 4:30-7:30pm.

If your child or yourself have a musical talent or an item for busking please let us know so we can put together a program for the day.

We are also on the lookout for students/parents who may be able to help with face-painting or balloon making.

If you can help with any of these please email the PFA [email protected] A final planning meeting will be held on Tuesday 22nd Feb 2:30pm at Rembrandts.

Fundraising Target 2013 With the imminent loss of the Rembrandts building at the end of the year, the focus for fundraising this year will be to continue to build funds to help equip the Multi Purpose Hall with audio visual equipment, staging etc. The cost of this will be around $30000. Last year we raised $10000 for this however with a sense of urgency we are aiming at $15000 this year. We thank you for your support as this will benefit the whole school. Our major fundraiser for the year is the Fun Run scheduled for early Term 2.

Term 1 PFA Events Family Picnic - Saturday 2nd March 4:30pm

VCE Camp Hello from the VCE camp. As I write this I am looking out over the tranquil and beautiful Lake Victoria as the swans glide by, the local grey kangaroos hop away into the scrub and the students crawl out of their tebins (a cross between a tent and a cabin) with bleary eyes. One group of students spent the night away on their overnight expedition whilst the others had leadership or study skills sessions followed by a ‘Minute to Win It’ competition.

The camp activities are based around teamwork and leadership development and it is interesting to watch some students come to the fore as young leaders whilst others step out of their comfort zones and contribute to the good of the group not just for themselves.

By the time you read this we should be safely back in Melbourne with students who have been challenged and grown and might be a little bit tired. Greg Crotty Head of Senior School

Interschool Swimming Carnival The Year 4-6 Interschool Swimming Carnival was held on Friday February 15th. St Andrews took 46 swimmers to this event, almost double the number that took part last year. The enthusiasm, anticipation and nervous excitement was palpable as our swimmers prepared for their races. Though we only placed 6th on the day, we took away some valuable lessons on team spirit and encouragement. The behaviour of the students was exceptional throughout, particularly evident as some struggled in their race, but the St Andrews students cheered them on regardless with great positivity and genuine congratulations. Well done St Andrews on a great day! Steve Mellody - Junior PE

Yr7-12 Swimming Carnival Last Wednesday all of our 7-12 students headed to Knox Leisureworks to compete in the St Andrews Inter-house Swimming Carnival. Students & teachers put on their community house colours and showed great enthusiasm to make it a successful day. Students had fun competing in various swimming strokes and for non swimmers we had the water slide and pass-the-towel activity which were a big hit. There was a Staff vs Student relay race at the end & Mr Broadbridge, Mr Idrees, Mr Mellody, Mr Brewer, Mrs Seed and Mrs Wansbrough gave our senior students a good challenge but congratulations go to the students for coming out on top. Barton continued their dominance and won the STACC Inter-house Swimming Carnival yet again. Congratulations Barton!! Daniel Idrees - Yr7-12 Sports Co-ordinator

VCE Basketball Victorious On Tuesday, 12th of February our VCE boys and girls basketball teams competed in the SEISS competition. Both of our boys and girls basketball teams played with great unity and sportsmanship and were crowned champions on the day.

Both the teams lost one pool match and then defeated the same team they lost to in the Grand Final. It was great to start the year on a victorious note and I ‘m proud of our students not necessarily because they won but because of the unity with which they played with on the day. Year 1 Science Year 1's had their first experience in the Science lab today. We looked at cells from our mouth under the microscope and learnt that germs are even smaller than what they saw. We also looked at tiny organisms found in a pond. Gail Van Heerden and Anthea Albertus Yr 1 Teachers

On Tuesday, 19th of January, Year 1 went to the

Science lab and looked through the microscopes. We

looked at pond water and people cells. The people

cells were tiny. The pond water had tiny creatures in

it. We all really enjoyed it. Daniel Farmer 1V

Year 7 Camp Year 7 Camp returned on Wednesday. We appreciated your prayers as God continued to provide His blessing through safety whilst travelling and during the activities. The Camp was a great success with students being challenged to undertake activities that they may not have previously encountered. Forest Edge, where the camp was held was a perfect setting to appreciate God’s creation, and the staff ensured that students were comfortable and well fed. The Camp also provided opportunities to develop team work, encourage one another and learn new skills.

Many new friendships were formed as students were able to support others in their team and encourage them through difficult situations. Some of the activities students were able to undertake included Ropes Course, Raft Making, Bike Riding, Archery and Bush Walking. Thank you to the teachers who attended Camp and Mr Littlechild for their care, encouragement and support for the students. Merrick Brewer Head of Middle School

Jenelle Coote

Primary Teacher

Hello St Andrews! I am Mrs Jenelle Coote and I will be teaching Prep C on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesdays this year, sharing the privilege with Mrs Hughes. I am married to the senior minister of Croydon Hills and Wonga Park Anglican church and have 2 beautiful children, Timothy who is 10 and Bethany who is 8. I have been teaching at St Andrews Christian College as an emergency teacher and before that I last taught at Red Rock Christian College at Sunbury. I have taught at many different schools, Christian and otherwise as we have moved for ministry. When I am not at school I run a MOPS program at church and do normal mum things. In my spare time I like to read, scrapbook and play with our puppy. I also love to travel, but don’t do as much as I would like to. I feel very blessed to be part of the team at St Andrews. Blessings, Mrs Coote

Steve Mellody

PE Teacher

My name is Steve Mellody and I'm a first year teacher at St Andrews. I graduated last year from LaTrobe University and was lucky enough to be the successful applicant for the PE job here. I’m so blessed to be married to the most amazing woman on the planet! My wife, Phoebe, is a 3rd year Prep teacher at Kingswood College and in terms of teaching the little ones, she definitely has the gift. We got married in 2010 and the time really does fly. I'm an avid follower of most sports, my favourites being basketball, golf and footy. In my spare time, which is not surprisingly almost non-existent since starting teaching, I love to keep active - whether at the gym, basketball with some mates or riding my road bike. My other great and recently discovered passion is travel. I've only managed to visit America and Hong Kong thus far in my life, but I've picked up steam in the last year or two and have my sights set on Europe next! I'm a laid back, easy going, love-a-laugh kind of a guy, so please feel free to come introduce yourselves when you see me wandering around. Regards, Steve Mellody

INTRODUCING OUR NEW STAFF #2 This week we are introducing Jenelle Coote & Steve Mellody .

Introducing
