We have been blessed with great weather for the many camps and outdoor activities that take place in this early part of the year. I would like to acknowledge and thank the teaching and support staff who design and supervise these activities. Time spent together off campus is often critical in developing relationships, especially for those students new to the school. Thanks also to the parents who prepare their children to take part in these events, and encourage them to embrace the challenges presented. They are an integral part of the learning journey of each student.

Open Day 2017

Ms Jo Villis & Ms Paddy Mc Evoy at the Microsoft Technology in Education Summit at Microsoft headquarters in Redmond, California

Primary ICT Coordinator, Ms Joanne Villis, and I attended the Microsoft Technology in Education Summit at Microsoft headquarters in Redmond, California last week. Educators discussed current and future trends in the use of technology to enhance student learning from the primary years through to tertiary. Jo’s work in the use of SharePoint and other products to personalise learning in her Year 5 classroom has been an inspiration to many teachers and we felt privileged to be sponsored to attend this very worthwhile meeting. We hope that your daughters are using their devices to harness their curiosity and expand their learning horizons.

Our swimmers of all ages have been busy representing SAC at a variety of inter-school competitions in recent weeks. What matters most to us is their sense of school pride and teamwork in representing our school. Congratulations to all students and staff who took part on your team spirit and results.

Open Day in Week 6 saw almost 200 families visit the College for the first time, along with many families of our current students. It is one of the highlights of our school year, as the breadth of activities available to students at SAC is on display. Many families commented on the wonderful student guides, who speak with such confidence and pride in their school; they are our greatest ambassadors. We also welcomed over 100 children and their families to enrolment interviews last weekend. They were clearly excited about joining our school community and being educated in the Mercy tradition.

A sea of orange engulfed the campus this week to celebrate Harmony Day, with the theme for 2017 ‘Everyone belongs’. A sense of belonging is what makes this school a very special place and our rich cultural tapestry is an important part of that. With students from over 60 different cultural backgrounds and 130 different postcodes, we certainly embrace diversity here at SAC.

Today our students and staff recognised Eart Hour Day by reducing their consumption of electricity in a range of ways. Earth hour gives our students a sense of empowerment as they combine forces to reduce our carbon footprint. We will continue to explore ways to make our school greener and more sustainable, and these goals are clearly evident in our Strategic Plan. We know how important it is for our young people to address the challenges faced by our planet.

Ms Paddy McEvoyPRINCIPAL

Congratulations to our SCPSSA team who won their Section 2 Carnival overall last Monday!

HARMONY DAY - EVERYONE BELONGSHarmony Day is a celebration of our cultural diversity - a day of cultural respect for everyone who calls Australia home. It is celebrated annually on the 21st of March. The message of Harmony Day is everyone belongs and it engages people to foster a sense of belonging.Last Tuesday, our school celebrated Harmony Day with a Latino dance performance at lunchtime. Students from Reception to Year 7 wrote messages on their Harmony Day hands and planted these around the school. The Year 3 classes participated in Latin percussion workshops after lunch. To celebrate diversity, the Year 2’s made Harmony Day scratch masks.

Ms Mary Kotsionis EAL TEACHER

The costumes were very interesting and the feathers were long. Maria Hassiotis 1JGI loved dancing the Macarena. Hayley Monis 1JGThey taught us how to dance and we had to move our hips from side to side. Adele Lokhorst 3EGIt was a good experience learning a new style of dance. Matilda Mahney 3EGI like the percussion instruments because they are very traditional and it sounded really loud. Gislene Nijenahagera 3EGWe tried Salsa dancing and we found it was fun but difficult to do. Jamie McBride-Hellewell and Meg Schwarz 7KOI really liked the vibe of the Latino dancing and the dancer’s costume was sparkly. Ariana Ravell 7KO

CHRYSALIS TO BUTTERFLY OBSERVATIONStudents from R-TH experienced the wonder of nature recently.Ms Lisa McLaughlin kindly gave R-TH a chrysalis attached to a small branch. A chrysalis is the sheltered stage of growth in the life cycle of a butterfly. The chrysalis was put into a glass jar and students observed the changes over approximately two weeks. Each day our observations were recorded and photographed. When the beautiful butterfly emerged from the chrysalis, we used a book loaned to us by Sr Janet to discover it was an Australian Monarch butterfly. After its wings had dried we released the butterfly near our school garden.

STUDENTS’ REFLECTIONS

It was inspirational to gain insight on the work being done to fight social injustice across the globe. Sophie Tait 11SEVolunteer Chris Leaver and Trade Manager Joseph Killian were more than happy to spend their valuable time showing us around the Oxfam Hutt Street store, and answering our abundant questions - many thanks to them! Jasmine Dallimore 11SEChris and Joseph introduced us to Oxfam’s ethical practices in relation to Fair Trade and the products they sell- the chocolate was particularly delicious! Fair Trade is definitely a cause worth supporting. Isabel Salter 11MB

We were surprised by the one hundred and twenty volunteers who manage their second hand book shop with many beautiful books at incredible prices, from 50 cents to $5. All books are donated by the public and many thousands. Jordan Rendell 11AB

TRIP TO ADELAIDE BOTANICAL WETLANDS

STUDENT REFLECTION

I had never visited the Adelaide Botanical Wetlands before and it was a great opportunity to recognise and learn firsthand the important role the wetland plays in the Botanical Gardens and to its ecosystem. Grace Peterson 10EHVisiting the Adelaide Wetlands provided us with the opportunity to learn more about why wetlands are so vital in providing a service function to our environment and the process of creating a natural wetland. I particularly enjoyed taking pictures of the variety of plants and animals in the area. Louise Jackson 10EHThe trip to the Adelaide Wetlands was extremely informative and allowed us to learn about the incredible environment whilst being able to see how it functioned for ourselves. The guide provided us with useful and exciting knowledge, which we were able to take away with us to assist with our report writing. Sophia Briggs 10EH

YOUNG MERCY LINKS SAYoung Mercy Links SA is a newly formed group of young adults who are passionate about mercy and staying connected with social justice once they have finished school. Most of the members are old scholars from St Aloysius College and Mercedes College. We are hoping to expand our group to include current Year 12 students, so that they can continue carrying the mercy torch once they graduate. On Thursday 16 March, we were grateful to be joined by our SRC President Clare Peterson who shared ideas with old scholars about ways we can support refugees in our community. Our first action for 2017 is hosting a book drive for children of newly arrived families. We aim to distribute the books at an upcoming Mother’s Day gathering. Books are a special gift because they allow parents to connect with their children and will also help people to develop their language and literacy skills. If you have any pre-loved books you would like to donate, please drop them in the box in the front foyer between now and the end of term.

MUSIC DEPARTMENT NEWS

On the Sunday of Week 5, the students of the music department participated in an overnight camp at Nunyara Conference centre. Music Camp is an opportunity for students to further develop their musical abilities as well as meeting and creating new relationships with fellow musicians in our school community. Students participated in intensive rehearsals with their ensembles to develop their individual parts. It was also a great chance to prepare and practice their pieces for upcoming performances such as the SAC Open Night and Generations in Jazz. Besides rehearsing in ensemble workshops, students also partook in various team-building activities such as treasure hunts, quiz night and the all-time favourite Disney-themed movie night, which for this year was Beauty and the Beast. Music Camp was both an enjoyable, productive and memorable experience for all students involved. Once having returned to school on Monday, the music students were involved in various performances at the SAC Open Day. All music ensembles performed the pieces that they had rehearsed and perfected at Music Camp. This was a great way for students to showcase the many talents within the SAC Music department as well as having the chance to perform in front of an audience. Although being a very busy two days, overall Music Camp and Open Day were a productive and fun experience for all students involved. Kate Gale and Nicole Fernandez (Music Leaders)

MUSIC CAMP 2017

Generations in Jazz is an annual Jazz Festival held in Mount Gambier. It brings together many of Australia’s most talented young jazz musicians to participate in and compete for various music scholarships and Big Band and Vocal awards. Most importantly, the event provides an environment for young musicians to perform and learn in a relaxed atmosphere, share fellowship with their peers and the opportunity to hear professionals such as James Morrison, Daryl Somers, Ross Irwin, James Muller and Graeme Lyall.

The music department is delighted to announce that both the St Aloysius College Stage Band and Catch 22 vocal group will be competing in the Festival held over the weekend Friday 5 May - Sunday 7 May.

We wish all staff and students involved in this exciting opportunity the very best of luck and hope the experience enriches their musical journey.

St Aloysius College offers an extensive Music Tuition program, offering private instruction for the following instruments in 2017:• Acoustic Guitar • Electric Guitar • Saxophone• Bass Guitar • Flute • Trombone• Cello

MUSIC TUITION

• Oboe • Trumpet• Clarinet • Percussion • Viola• Double Bass • Piano

• Violin• Drum Kit • Voice

Lessons will be offered for 30 minutes per week during school time. Ensemble playing gives players and vocalists the opportunity to learn a vast array of repertoire while experiencing the sound of a full band, orchestra, choir or chamber ensemble. Students also use the opportunity to expand upon the techniques learned in private lessons. I encourage all students to participate in a school ensemble and ask them to refer to the Student Bulletin notices for more details. We have the following ensembles available:

PRIMARY SPORTAFTER SCHOOL SPORT

Term 1 of Primary Sport is very quickly coming to a close with only two more weeks of basketball and beach volleyball to go.The girls have been showing great sportsmanship and some impressive skills. The lacrosse clinics have finished for the term, with some students looking forward to putting the skills they have learnt into practice during our Saturday morning winter competition. Water polo participants showed a great improvement in their understanding of the game learning: how to start, how to take a foul and positions in attack. Water polo clinics have also finished for the term and will resume in Term 4. The Year 2/3 students each received a certificate last week to recognise their completion of the mini soccer ‘Come ‘n’ Try program. The girls had a great time with the Sport Leaders, finishing with a mini tournament of games. Year 1 NetSetGo Come ‘n’ Try began last Tuesday with instructors from netball Australia teaching the girls about balance and passing. These sessions will conclude in Week 10.

Congratulations to Pia Marschall, Chelsea Chhour, Ariana Ravell, Eliza Moroney-Plouffe, Indyanna Rashleigh and Mya Axon who were selected to represent the East Adelaide District at the SAPSASA State Metro Swimming Championships last Thursday. The girls did SAC proud achieving some excellent results and helping the East Adelaide District win overall. A special mention must go to Indyanna Rashleigh who won two gold medals and two silver medals on the day. Well done Indyanna! A team of 20 girls participated in the SACPSSA Swimming Carnival on Monday 20 March. The girls performed extremely well, especially considering they were competing against boys too! Before the event was cancelled due to poor weather, the girls had won twelve first ribbons, five second ribbons and one third ribbon. The efforts of all swimmers meant the SAC team won overall at the Section 2 Carnival. Congratulations girls on your fantastic results! Thank you to all the girls who trialled for the SAPSASA netball team on Monday. The level of ability was outstanding and made picking a team difficult. Congratulations to the girls who have been selected for a second trial/training session, you should have been notified via email this week. More details on training times and dates will be distributed in the coming weeks.

The Year 1 classes have started the term participating in a unit called Game Sense during Physical Education. This is a great topic to introduce PE to Junior primary students, learning about important aspects of playing games. Students have participated in a variety of school yard and popular PE activities with and without equipment. There has been fantastic class discussions about game play, basic tactical awareness and creating your own games. Year 1 students have identified five key components when creating games 1. Rules are important for clarity and fairness2. Boundaries and space are needed for safety3. Equipment is fun for creativity and skill focus4. Games need an aim for learning and improving 5. Scoring systems are great for positive competition and are

used as a results factorStudents were given the opportunity to create their own games focussing on these factors learnt throughout the term.
