SUTTON Town Juniors Blues under-11s made a triumphant return to the recent annual football tournament in Woolacombe, Devon, winning the competition in unbeaten fashion and receiving the trophy from former Wales ace John Hartson. The Blues suffered the heartbreak last year of dom- inating the final but being un- able to put the ball in the net and ultimately losing out in a penalty shoot-out. However, they put this dis- appointment behind them, despite being limited through injuries to a squad of just nine players, thereby having no substitutes available throughout a gruelling tour- nament of eight 25-minute games in two days. They nevertheless comfort- ably won all four games on the opening day, including a 5-0 defeat of local rivals Colron. Tiredness and the absence of available substitutes took their toll on the second day as JUNIOR FOOTBALL Romulus under-14s won the Midland Junior Premier League Major Cup, beating a very strong Aylestone Park team. The Roms were 1-0 down after a closely-contested first half but dominated the second period and goals from Brandon Jones and Joe Webb sealed the victory. HARD work and perseverance brought little reward for the Sutton Coldfield Maximum KPM pairing of Stewart Lines and Martin Depper in the VW Racing Cup at Snetterton. Having qualified third for race one, it all went wrong for Lines in the assembly area as his car would not start and he joined the race a lap down but still made two places to finish 21st. Depper, meanwhile, quali- fied 15th on the grid but was up to tenth by the end of the open- MOTORSPORT TENNIS: Sutton Coldfield Tennis Club duo Frankie George and Mack Holtom proved they were real aces by shining at the Warwickshire U12 Girls AEGON Team Tennis Competition. The final match was against Beechwood from Coventry and both George and Holtom won their singles matches 6-1 and 6- 2 respectively. That clinched first place overall after an impressive record in the competition in which they won not just all 18 of the matches they played but every set too, losing only 19 games out of a total 127 between them. Sutton head coach Chris Johnson said: “This is a fantastic effort from both Frankie and Mack. Winning their matches convincingly throughout the competition has given them a lot of confidence.” Super Smith surges to Midlands gold medal Price, 13, competed in seven events over the champion- ships, finishing in fifth and sixth place in the 100m fly and freestyle respectively. In the 400m freestyle, he dropped his personal best by eight seconds as well as taking four seconds off his 200m backstroke time. Campbell set two freestyle PBs in the 14-year age group 100m and 200m distances with 1.00.42mins and 2.13.37mins respectively, while Richard- son, 13, also lowered her 200m backstroke best time by a second. Mee, 11, improved her 100m backstroke best time to 1.24.74mins while Turnbull, also 11, sliced three seconds off her best time with a 1.21.74mins swim and 13-year- old Dolan was just outside her PB in the 100m freestyle. In the 12-year age group, Holder also set a PB in the same event with in 1.16mins. She also improved her 200m backstroke time and reduced her 100m free time down to 1.07.84mins. Rachel Wilson, 14, qualified for four events, competing in the 100m and 200m fly and 200m and 400m freestyle while Aristea Knight, 12, and Elmena Saunders, 14, com- peted in the 200m breaststroke and freestyle. Although their training time is divided between Boldmere and City of Birm- ingham coaches there were five ‘Development Squad’ swimmers competing this year in City colours Leo Karski, Roan Griffiths, Lily Wood, Alexandra Bartley and Harriet Gordon. Karski had a very impress- ive championship, winning the 11-year-old BAGCATs (British Age Group Category) top boy award after claiming triple gold in the 200m and 400m Freestyle and 400m IM along with three silvers in the 100m freestyle, 200IM and 200m Fly. Championship debutants Bartley and Woods, both 10, also impressed with the former picking up five medals; 200m free (gold), 200m IM and 400m free (silver) and 100m free and 400m IM (bronze), with the latter taking the gold in the 100m free and bronze in the longer 400 free. By STEVE HARLOW Swimming correspondent ELEVEN youngsters repres- ented Boldmere Swimming Club at the recent British Gas ASA Midland 2013 Age Group Championships at Coventry. There were five champion- ships debutants – Anya Mee, Hannah Turnbull, Megan Holder, Georgina Dolan and Ben Smith – along with pre- vious qualifiers Aristea Knight, Laura Richardson, Matt Price, Rachel Wilson, Elmena Saunders and Ben Campbell. Having learned to swim with Boldmere from the age of five, Smith has progressed through the club and was the youngest to qualify for the championships in two events in the 10-year-old age group, despite a rule change that re- quired all 10-year-olds to achieve the 11-year-old qual- ifying times. With meeting the qualifying times an achievement in itself, his medal-winning perform- ances were all the more im- pressive. Having set his qualifying time in a short course 25m pool, it was Smith’s first 400m individual medley competi- tion in a long course 50m pool which saw him win the gold medal in such a tough event. He then followed this, in his second event on the last Sunday, with a 1.3second per- sonal best in the 100m free- style to take the silver medal in a time of 1.10.86mins.
