Race Report – Round 1
Thanks to Steve Koen who offered to take over the role of race reporter for Round 1 in the absence of our
usual contributor.
Held at Eastern Creek on Saturday 31st March and Sunday 1
st April.
A total of sixteen race cars entered and fronted up for qualifying on a beautiful sunny Saturday morning.
Missing was reigning State Champion Dameon Jameson, who is running his newly painted Jaguar in the
National Series this year and so missing from the State Championship. Chris Jackson brought his trusty
Calibra, sponsored by CSJ Engineering and Fuel to Race. Chris took fastest lap with a blistering 1 min
32.78 seconds on his second lap of qualifying. Geoffrey Whittaker was only about 0.2 seconds behind
Chris, showing just how well the Reds Racing Service VL Commodore has now been developed and
presented.
Birol Cetin brought the former Scott Butler Billy’s Motorsport Chev Camaro into third spot in qualifying,
with a 1 min 34.7. Billy has come to grips with this car, and has it running beautifully. As the weekend
developed, though, Billy made the decision that he needs to follow the leaders and move to Michelin tyres.
The Dunlops were good for the first few laps, then went off completely as the race progressed. A welcome
return was Anthony Macready, in his Nissan 300ZX. Anthony is now sponsored by Interlloy Pty Ltd. Gail
was heard to suggest that the car hadn’t been on the track for a long time, and mightn’t know its way
around. Not a problem – Anthony sure showed the car the right way.
5
Simon Copping brought his Industrie Clothing 5-litre Commodore into 5th
place in qualifying, and
deserves credit for how well these cars perform against lighter and more powerful cars. Following Simon
was Steve Shiels, in the Central West Driver Training Camaro Z28. The car is beautifully prepared, and
the repairs to the nose cone after Bathurst are immaculate, and credit is rightly given to Blatch Quality
Smash Repairs for the great work.
Scott Reed didn’t bring the Oz Truck – neither did the Coulters bring theirs – but Scott did bring a
magnificent looking Pro-Cut Racing late model Mustang. This not only looks the part, but will only
improve from here. Check out the interior, as it looks very much space age stuff.
Following Scott were Fred Axisa in his Austrack Motorsport Commodore, Stuart Inwood in another 5 litre
car, the Inwood Racing Falcon AU, Grant Doulman in his new ride, the Sinoco LED Lights Commodore,
then Darren Steeden in the well presented white Mk 1 Ford Escort with a 6 litre V8, Steve Lacey in the
former Grant Doulman / Simon Copping blue VK Commodore, Russell Bayley in the Shannon Civil
Racing Corvette, Andrew Leithhead in the GTA Motorsport Alfa Romeo Alfetta GTV6, David Cameron in
the Subway Holden Gemini, and Michael Hiscoe in the Sonic Interactive Mitsubishi EVO 9 GT who only
completed 1 lap of qualifying after blowing the turbo.
6
Grant Doulman had a frightening experience as he negotiated Turn 9. He saw some smoke, and
immediately thought that his tyres had smoked up a little. Until he saw it was black smoke. He immediately
pulled into the infield, right next to Martin Koen from Koenphoto. We understand that the flames
emanating from Grant’s Commodore caused Martin to move pretty quickly. Funny thing was that Grant
had an extinguisher in the car, despite some concerns with the scrutineers earlier that day. It appears that
you don’t have to have an extinguisher, but if you do have one, it needs to conform to Schedule H. More
details to come on this, but Grant was able to extinguish the flames before too much damage was done
using his own extinguisher. The flaggies didn’t have any extinguishers at their flag point. Neither did the
truck which came to assist Grant back to the pits. Could have been a really bad one, similar to the Tony
7
Ricciardello incident at Mallala the following weekend where no extinguishers at the flag point (it was the
Friday) meant a small fire became a big one and badly damaged an iconic Sports Sedan in the National
Series.
Race 1 got underway, but not until Anthony Macready had some misfortune after Turn 1. The input shaft of
his transaxle appeared to be a concern. Chris Jackson took the lead from pole position, and looked to have
the race sewn up at that stage. Geoff Whittaker followed closely, with Birol Cetin on his tail. Steve Shiels
was fourth, then Fred Axisa, Simon Copping, then Darren Steeden in the Escort, Grant Doulman, Scott
Reed, Stuart Inwood uncharacteristically further back, then Russell Bayley, Steve Lacey, Andrew
Leithhead and David Cameron in the very pretty Holden Gemini. Geoff Whittaker made a very determined
dive to go under Chris Jackson in turn 2, but it didn’t come off for Geoff. Meanwhile, Birol Cetin was right
on their tails. Lap 2 was unchanged except that Darren Steeden dropped to 10th
position, and Andrew
Leithhead didn’t complete the lap. Lap 3 showed Chris pulling a small lead over the battle for second
between Geoff Whittaker and Birol Cetin. Lap 4 showed Steve Lacey pass Russell Bayley to claim 10th,
and Chris Jackson extended his lead very slightly. Grant Doulman went a bit wide on turn 2, touched the
dirt and didn’t drop any pace. In fact, the fifth lap was Grant’s fastest lap for Race 1. Fred Axisa dropped
out, meaning Grant Doulman moved into 5th
position.
On the 5th
lap, Chris Jackson and Geoff Whittaker battled for the lead, with Chris remaining in front. Birol
Cetin had dropped back a little, possibly with the Dunlops starting to go off. Steve Shiels held a lonely
fourth position, and Steve Lacey pulled a beautifully executed dive under Darren Steeden in turn 2 to take
9th
position. 6th
lap, and Birol Cetin dropped right back to 7th
position after his tyres let him down. Chris
Jackson pulled a good lead again and looked about to lap David Cameron in the Gemini. 7th
lap, and Grant
Doulman had another misfortune when he holed the sump after some very impressive times, putting him
out for the weekend and putting Scott Reed into 4th
position. Birol Cetin pulled a massive dive under Stuart
Inwood on turn 2, but then Birol’s engine cut out leaving Stuart to regain 6th
position.
By lap 8, Chris Jackson started to experience some difficulties and Geoff Whittaker was catching him.
Steve Shiels was also on the run, and Simon Copping was pushing hard behind him. On lap 11, as Chris
Jackson came out of turn 1, gremlins struck and the car coasted to a halt. Chris later found out that a fuse
had blown, leaving the fuel pump with no power. It wasn’t good to see Chris and Anthony Macready
standing in the infield while others continued around them. Final positions after 13 laps were Geoff
8
Whittaker having a well deserved win, followed by Steve Shiels, Scott Reed scoring third in his first run in
the Mustang, followed by Simon Copping, Stuart Inwood, Birol Cetin, then one lap down were Steve
Lacey, Russell Bayley, Darren Steeden after troubles with his rims holding air, and David Cameron closing
out the race.
Race 2 was the Sunday morning event, with Grant Doulman and Fred Axisa missing from the sixteen
starters of the first race. Michael Hiscoe was back, having replaced the turbo in the Sonic Interactive
Mitsubishi. Anthony Macready had worked throughout the afternoon and evening to replace the broken
input shaft and was also ready for Sunday’s racing.
Beautiful weather again put a smile on all faces, and the Superkarts had a very brief run before the Sports
Sedans opened the rest of the race program. No one mentioned that April 1st was April Fool’s Day,
fortunately. Anthony Macready and Chris Jackson started from the rear of the field, having DNF’d in Race
1. Pole sitter, Geoff Whittaker, was confident that he would be looking for Chris in his rear view mirror,
soon after the first lap.
Chris Jackson had a blinder of a start, and by turn 4, was in fifth place behind Geoff Whittaker, Steve
Shiels, Scott Reed (at that stage) and Simon Copping. Simon and Chris both passed the Reed Mustang
before the first lap was completed. By lap 2, Chris was second to Geoff, who had pulled a substantial lead.
This continued for a few laps, with Birol Cetin and Simon Copping having a good race swapping positions
several times. Lap 4 saw Chris Jackson’s gremlins return, which took him out of the race again. Later
9
investigation showed that a fuel line earthed out on the power terminal, blowing the fuse. That won’t
happen again. Scott Reed passed Anthony Macready, which resulted in the Mustang taking second position,
and both Birol Cetin and Steve Shiels had their fastest laps. Third position then became a good battle
between Steve Shiels, Stuart Inwood, Anthony Macready and Simon Copping.
Lap 6 saw unrelated spins and rapid recoveries by both Simon Copping (over the bridge) and Anthony
Macready (turn 10), with Anthony barely touching the wall and scratching the duco and wing slightly. The
exhaust exit ended up a funny shape, but nothing a few taps with a hammer couldn’t sort out after the race.
After the final (8th
) lap, Geoff Whittaker took his second win from 2 races, followed by Birol Cetin, Steve
10
Shiels and Scott Reed. The first three placegetters were three of the four Steve’s Toyshop cars in the race.
Maybe race 3 could have them all in the final winners circle?
Sunday afternoon saw Race 3, the Trophy Race, with Chris Jackson again at the rear of the field. The fuse
wasn’t going to blow this time. The lights for the race start came on and something strange happened.
Several cars jumped, then stopped, then went again. Not 100% just what occurred there, but the officials
later imposed 5 second penalties to Geoff Whittaker, Birol Cetin and Steve Shiels. The rest of the field
jumped once the lights went out. One day, I’ll wait at the start line and record the start in slow motion, so
we can be sure and certain who does or doesn’t “jump the start”.
Birol Cetin made a blinder of a start, and jumped clear into the lead. He was followed across the start line
the first time by Geoff Whittaker, Anthony Macready, Steve Shiels, Stuart Inwood, Scott Reed, Simon
Copping, Darren Steeden, Steve Lacey, Russell Bayley, Andrew Leithhead, Michael Hiscoe, Chris Jackson
after a spin coming out of turn 9, and David Cameron. Lap 2 saw Birol Cetin leading from Geoff
Whittaker, and a hard charging Anthony Macready pushing them both. Anthony passed Geoff on the next
lap, then a drag race out of Turn 9 resulted in Anthony passing Birol for the lead. Chris Jackson had
climbed into 7th
position. Andrew Leithhead unfortunately had to pit in the 5th
lap, taking out a very pretty
race car.
By the end of the fifth lap, Anthony was holding a good lead from Geoff Whittaker, who had passed Birol
Cetin again (those damned Dunlops!) with Chris Jackson now running 4th
on the track ahead of Steve
11
Shiels, with another race within a race between Darren Steeden and Steve Lacey further back. By the end of
the seventh lap, Anthony still held first place but was being harassed by Geoff Whittaker, and Chris
Jackson looking ready to pounce. Scott Reed pitted in the Mustang, after a very impressive debut outing.
Second last lap we find Geoff Whittaker back in the lead, with Chris Jackson all over the red Commodore.
Anthony was a fair way back, and Russell Bayley had also pitted. This was another 1 min 34 second lap for
Chris Jackson, and on the ninth lap, the final one, Chris Jackson passed Geoff Whittaker to take over the
top spot. After the handful of 5 second penalties were applied, the finishing order was Chris Jackson,
Anthony Macready, Geoff Whittaker, Birol Cetin, Steve Shiels, Stuart Inwood, Simon Copping, Darren
Steeden, Steve Lacey, Michael Hiscoe in the Mitsubishi EVO 9GT, Russell Bayley and David Cameron
being the one and only Division 3 car to finish.
All appearances are that 2012 is going to be a fantastic year for the Sports Sedans. With cars like Anthony
Macready’s Nissan returning, Birol Cetin getting some fantastic performances from the Camaro, Scott
Reed’s magnificent Mustang, Grant Doulman showing that his Commodore is going to be amongst the top
runners, and Chris Jackson, Steve Shiels and Geoff Whittaker pushing the pointy end, we will be in for an
exciting and enjoyable year. Bring on Wakefield Park!

2012 Best Presented Award
Thanks to the generosity of our major sponsor, Air Technology Australia, 2012 again sees the
awarding of a “Best Presented” prize. The award includes a perpetual trophy and an individual trophy
each year. To be eligible all you have to do is turn up and race, having put a little pride and preparation
into your beloved Sports Sedan. An independent judge representing one of our sponsors will allocate
points at each round of the championship for the cars and teams deemed to be best presented, with
the winning car being that with the most accumulated points over the year.
The Best Presented recipients for Round 1 are:
Michael Hiscoe 3 points
Steve Shiels 2 points
Fred Axisa 1 point

ASSA Membership
The State Championship Regulations require that for championship points to be allocated at any time
during the season, you must be a financial member of ASSA NSW prior to the event you wish to score
points in.
That means that if you are not a member, you will not be allocated points. You can remain a member of
another club and enter state rounds based on that membership, but to score championship points you must
be a member of ASSA NSW.
2012 Membership forms are now available on the ASSA NSW website.
Series Sponsor and Windscreen Banners
Air Technology Australia will once again be the major sponsor of the NSW Sports Sedan State
Championship in 2012.
As part of the 2012 Championship Regulations all cars competing for State Championship points must
display a sponsor windscreen banner.
In addition a number of Round Sponsors are supporting Sports Sedans again in 2012. Stickers from each of
the round sponsors should also be on display on every car. Stickers and windscreen banners will be
supplied to anyone who needs them.
14
Series Sponsor On Board Again for 2012
2012 sees the return of the State Championship series sponsor, Air Technology Australia.
All State Championship cars will be wearing an Air Technology Australia windscreen banner supplied by
ASSA for the season. The company will also continue to sponsor the Best Presented Award.
Air Technology Australia supplies ventilation and air conditioning equipment to end users and contractors,
including fans, water chillers, electric motors, variable speed drives, controls, ventilation grilles, weather
louvres and associated spare parts.
They also supply fibreglass automotive components for specific Sports Sedan builders.
Customers are many and varied. Their activities include mining diamonds and gold, building road and rail
tunnels, spray booths, food processing factories, all kinds of manufacturing, industrial applications,
education at schools and universities, transportation, and buildings both small and large. The ATA
customer base is spread throughout the whole of Australia and they have exported to customers on nearby
Pacific Islands and in the Middle East.
The Air Technology Australia focus is on quality energy efficient solutions for air movement applications.

Classes/Divisions for 2012
Just a reminder about the class points system for the 2012 Club Championship.
Once again in 2012 there are three divisions, based on lap times. Research conducted into results over the
last couple of years has aided in determining the division times, which are based on Eastern Creek lap times
due to that circuit being the venue for Round 1. Please note that the lap times have varied slightly from the
2011 times, helping to even out the spread of competitors in each division.
The divisions are:
Division 1: Under 1:37.00
Division 2: 1:37.00 to 1:42.00
Division 3: Over 1:42.00
Therefore it doesn’t matter what type of car you are driving (i.e. Space Frame or Floor Pan), how fast you
go determines what division you run in and you should (in theory) be on track racing amongst drivers who
are competing for the same division.
Divisions will generally be allocated based on the qualifying session from Round 1. Of course, there may
be some issues with cars or other factors that will provide an inaccurate gauge of some lap times. The
committee may re-allocate some drivers into another division based on prior results and lap times in dry
conditions.
Similarly, any driver who wishes to be placed in a higher division can request this through the committee –
so if you know that Round 1 is not going to show the true potential of your car but that you will be
improving throughout the season, you can opt to move up a division in advance.
Changes to divisions will only occur after Round 1 in exceptional circumstances, as the Division point
scores will be affected if changes are made later in the season.
If you missed Round 1 the committee will allocate an appropriate division for later rounds based on
historical performance and current, matching lap times from either circuit.
The committee will also allocate further classes within the three divisions should there be enough
competitors. For example if we get a few historic Sports Sedans, some ex-V8 Supercars, or a contingent of
utes or trucks running for the season then class points will be allocated and a class trophy awarded at the
end of the season.
The State Championship will still be decided on outright points and in this regard remains unchanged.
Point Scores
The point scores for both the State Championship and the Club Championship will be calculated in the
same way as last year – 20 points for 1st place, 18 points for 2
nd place, 16 points for third place and then 15
points down to 1 point for the next 15 places.
For the State Championship points will be allocated on an outright basis for each of the three races at each
round. The fastest qualifier at each round will also be allocated two (2) points.
For the Club Championship points will be allocated for each Division and will include qualifying and each
of the three races at each round. Therefore if you happen to qualify well but the rest of your weekend goes
awry, you still walk away with some points from the round. Class points will also be allocated in this way.
16
Division 3 Receives Sponsorship Support
Round sponsor and regular photographic contributors Koen Photo have provided extra support to NSW
Sports Sedans in 2012 by supplying trophies and other benefits for Division 3 competitors. The NSW
Committee has been looking at ways to attract more Division 3 competitors and build upon the class, and
the support from Koen Photo will go a long way to achieving this.
Koen Photo are looking at 1st, 2
nd and 3
rd trophies for each of the six State Championship rounds, then a
Finals for the Presentation Night. They will also be making a special “Encouragement Award” to someone
in Division 3.
The NSW Committee is very grateful to Koen Photo for their ongoing support and in particular their push
to improve Division 3 in 2012.
If you are a Division 3 competitor or would like to be, please contact the Committee through Geoff
Whittaker, or simply turn up and race!

EMBROIDERY SERVICES EXAMPLE PAGE:
Supply your Own Design or Photo (JPG File) or select from a huge range of standard designs. Some examples are
attached below.
Any image can be digitised & any design can be embroidered in any size, but just like a digital photo, the larger the
embroidery size required - the better quality image (JPG) needs to be. If you have a small (low quality) image, this
can be enhanced and re-digitised to suit your needs.
