LET US ENJOY DIWALICaring for Safety

Diwali symbolizes the victory of light over darkness, knowledge over ignorance, good over evil, hope over despair. The celebration of Diwali as the ‘victory of good over evil’ refers to the light of higher knowledge dispelling all ignorance, the ignorance that masks one’s true nature, not as the body but as unchanging, infinite, immanent and transcendent reality. With this awakening comes compassion and awareness of oneness of all things and knowledge overcomes ignorance. Diwali is the celebration of inner light over spiritual darkness, knowledge over ignorance, right over wrong and good over evil.

Diwali or Deepavali is the festival of lights. It has been an ancient Hindu festival which spiritually signifies victory of good over evil.

We clean, renovate and decorate our homes and shops and offices. We bathe afresh and wear new clothes, light up oil lamps inside and outside our homes. Women and children decorate entrances with Rangoli – creative colorful floor designs both inside and walkways of their homes.

The goddess Laxmi is worshipped. Laxmi symbolizes wealth and prosperity and her blessings are invoked for a good year ahead. Laxmi is believed to roam the earth on Diwali night. Small earthenware lamps filled with oil are lighted and placed in rows.

Narak Chaturdarshi is the second day of festivities and it is also called Choti Diwali. Houses are cleaned thoroughly and special bathing rituals such as fragment oil bath are held. All families prepare home-made sweets. Diwali festival is known for eating and enjoying of various types of sweets and delicious snacks.

Diwali brings the message of good-will and peace. People give

charities and show generosity. At the international border, every year on Diwali, Indian Forces approach Pakistani Forces and offer traditional Indian Sweets. The Pakistani Soldiers anticipating the gesture return the good will with an assortment of Pakistani sweets.

We all vehemently pray:From untruth lead us to TruthFrom darkness lead us to LightFrom death lead us to

ImmortalityOm Shanti, Shanti, ShantihiIt is a Vedic prayer from

Brahadaranyaka Upanishad celebrating light.

Diwali marks a major shopping period in India. Jewellaries, dresses, goods of comfort and luxury are bought. The economic activities go on briskly.

The crackers are bursted. Children enjoy sparklers and a variety of small fireworks. Adults enjoy playing powerful crackers. The fireworks signify celebration of Diwali as well a way to chase away evil spirits.

Diwali is a festival of love and mutual good-will. The husbands give thoughtful gifts to their spouses. The married daughters are invited for special meals and on Akkan Tadige, the sisters are invited by their brothers for the special meals. Thus Diwali is a festival that binds up people and reinforces the ties of filial relationships.

The SSK Times wishes all its readers and community brethren and sisters a happy Diwali. It extends its greetings to all people.

The SSK Times makes an appeal and request to all to avoid crackers if possible and to exercise special caution in using them.

Let Diwali be enjoyed fully and thoroughly. Happiest Greetings of Deepavali

History of Somavamsha Sahasrarjun KshatriyaTHE SSK TRADITIONS

The peculiar customs of ‘Kartik Masa’ rituals in the ‘Adhik Masa’

paNCHaNGa SummaRY12. uttaRa NaKSHatRa (uttaRa pHalGuNi)

Murlidharsa F. Kalburgi

The SSKs living in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Gujarat follow the same traditional pattern of religious rituals especially related to the Adhik Kartik Masa procedures and performances of rites. During the Adhik Kartik Shukla period from ‘Ekadashi’ (the 11th day in the Moon fortnight) to Gouri Hunnime (Full Moon day) our people undertake pilgrimage (journey to a sacred place for religious reasons) to have the darshan of Kartikeya (Kumarswami). This is a religious congregation of the SSK youths, once in every three years.

Sandur is a small town in Bellary district situated in the hilly region and is known for its scenic beauty. Kumaraswami temple is located on south-west corner and is connected to Sandur by road. According to one version, the Parvati temple (which was originally called Kumaraswami temple) was built by the Badami Chalukyas (7th-8th Century). The temple currently called Kumaraswami temple (originally had Shanmukha as the main deity) was constructed during the reign of the Rastrakutas (8th-10th Century)

This tradition of pilgrimage to Sandur Kartikeya Temple has been followed with devotion and religious fervor. During the ‘Adhik’ Kartik masa (Shukla Paksha) from Ekadashi to Full-Moon day, the SSK children especially the youths between 20 and 25 years undertake the pilgrimage to Sandur to seek the darshan

of Kumarswami. While thus going on pilgrimage the youths are said not to reveal their pilgrimage to any one in their houses. They are licensed to mortgage the small things of the house to meet their pilgrimage expenses. The sisters and mothers when come to know that their brother or son has gone on pilgrimage, they visit the nearest temple from their houses and go there pouring water as a symbol of purification and pray god to bless the pilgrim.

The pilgrims returning to their homes will first gather at the community temple or Hall and the kiths and kins bring sweet dishes (payasam) for them and feed them happily. Then the pilgrims are taken home in procession with the auspicious music and songs. At home the pilgrim is given a religious bath smearing turmeric and coconut oil and make aarati. They perform the ‘Gondal’ religious ritual and offer delicious food to the invitees. The relations and neighbors offer their gifts of love to the pilgrims.

The twelfth star in the horoscopic chart is the Uttara Nakshatra. It is a

congregation of two stars. Uttara Nakshatra is in the degree from

146-20 to 160.00. It is also called Uttara phalguni. The deity related to this star is Aaryama, the worshipper of sun-god. ‘Aaryama’ means stopping of the enemies. The

first phase of this Nakshatra falls in the Simha (Leo) Rashi

and the second, third and fourth phases are covered in the Kanya

Rashi. The westerners call this nakshatra Leonis and Debevola.

The striking features of this nakshatra are as follows: If the child is born in the first phase of Simha Rashi, it would be unpropitious for the father. So, in such cases Uttara Nakshatra shanti has to be performed. There are no ill-effects for those born in the second, third and fourth phases of this nakshatra. If a person dies in the Uttara Nakshatra, the members of his or her family have to leave the house for three months or perform Shanti rituals. (As it is a tripadi nakshatra, it is held inauspicious). The Uttara Nakshatra period is good for making the gold ornaments, and for making the things that are needed for royal grandness- chatra, chamara, palanquin etc. This nakshatra is good for cultivation of land and sowing and

meeting political personalities and for opening the new homes (Grahapravesh) and entering the town anew, for laying foundation stones for the construction of big buildings. The persons born in the Uttara Nakshatra have sturdy physique and they are strong and enjoy the rich status. They will be in high positions and enjoy luxurious life. They are brave and win over their enemies. They will be generous and wise. They will be skilled in pleading. The persons of Uttara Nakshatra or others in this nakshatra can undertake contract works, industrial enterprises, printing business, publication of books, sale of books and stationeries, mining business, medicine business, sale of perfumes, scents, cigarettes, kerosene, pepper, chilies etc. This nakshatra is favorable to such of the enterprises. The Janmaksharas (the beginning letters of the names) of the persons born in the Uttara Nakshatra are – for the 1st phase – Te, for the 2nd phase – To, for the 3rd phase – Pa and for the 4th phase – pi.The persons born in the first phase should wear Topaz, those born in the second phase should wear blue Sapphires, those born in the third phase should wear blue Sapphires and those born in the fourth phase should wear Topaz. The jewels worn should weigh a minimum of two carrots. To the persons born in Uttara Nakshatra – Rohini, Hasta, Shravana nakshatras are

wealth stars. So, in these stars persons concerned can profitably undertake business or sales, money lending etc. Aaridra, Swati, Shatatara are welfare stars. So, these stars are favorable for welfare and ambitious works. Pushya, Anuradha, Uttara Bhadrapada are achieving stars. So, these stars are favorable for undertaking new businesses, ambitious projects, adventurous works, communication and contact works with the big factories etc. Magha, Moola, Ashwini, Hubba (Purva phalguni), Purvashadha, Bharani are friendly stars. So, partnership ventures with the persons of these stars can be undertaken.
