What the SSA is Doing…BY EVAN DELLOR, SSA PRESIDENT

We’ve continued over the last several months with strong membership support. It’s amazing how the organization has grown from mostly word of mouth. Fortunately, we managed to pull off an in-person general meeting for our annual summer picnic at the Jaqua Ranch. Thanks are certainly in order to Ami Jaqua for her generous offer to let the SSA continue to hold this event at her marvelous property. Nikki Hanson (of the South Skyline Firesafe Council) gave an engaging talk about fire-smart landscaping and ecology specific to our Santa Cruz Mountains environment. Of particular note was the emphasis on planning for long-term management. I’ll certainly look at things differently now as a consequence of Nikki’s presentation. I also noticed the attendance of many members who I had not met before, and in addition, many of these people I learned are recent arrivals to the community. The presence of new and younger members helps the events remain engaging and dynamic. Thank you to all who made the trek to join us! The board continues to be active in our many roles, including the distribution of grant funds, community safety and communication, particularly in regard to fire and road issues, and also the publication of this fine newsletter. We do currently have board positions available. Please contact me at [email protected] if you’d like to sit in on a board meeting to see what participation involves. These meetings are still currently held online, although we are

certainly hoping to resume our in-person format before too long. Usually, the meetings are held on the second Thursday of the month, from 7-9pm.

Skyline Propane Users Group (SPUG) was formed to benefit SSA members. For information about joining, or for members wishing current information on the agreement go to our website: www.SouthSkyline.org/spug/. If you have questions, please email [email protected] . SSA has agreements with Amerigas, FerrellGas, Kamps, and Suburban Propane Scotts Valley. The open market price is more than $1.00/gallon higher than the SPUG price. Please note: Prices are subject to change as frequently as wholesale prices change. The prices SSA posts are for the first of the month. Our SPUG rate is based on a keep-full basis, not will-call service. You are not required to pay sales tax on propane if you do not have natural gas available where you use propane. If you get your propane from Amerigas, you will need to submit a sales tax exemption form. Contact Amerigas for the form.Membership dues were due in January. Those whose SSA membership has lapsed can be disqualified by our propane providers from receiving the benefit of the SPUG price. Membership can be renewed at http://SouthSkyline.org/membership/. If paying by check use the Membership Application on the website and in this issue of Skylines.

SSA Membership Report – October 2021BY DEBRA BORN, MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE CHAIR

Another Summer PassesThis summer has fortunately been relatively uneventful relative to last summer when many of us had evacuated our properties and were anxiously awaiting the complete containment of the CZU fire. We’ve been blessed this year so far with cooler weather and no large fires in our South Skyline area. We’re managing to escape the worst of the Covid Delta variant effects in this part of the country and starting to get back to normal activities.

South Skyline Association held its first in-person General Meeting in over a year in August at the Jaqua ranch. Many are carefully resuming travel. Shopping and doctor visits feel a little less risky. We can only hope by this time next year we can more fully relax and enjoy simple daily activities.

Despite wildfire threat, smoky skies, and the threat of Covid, our membership continues to slowly expand as people continue to realize the benefits of our Association.

As we edge closer to 2022, please try to join us in October for our last General Meeting of 2021 to enjoy the always informative and entertaining presentation and opportunity to connect with other mountain residents.

Remember to renew your annual membership by the end of January (still at $20) regardless of when you renewed or joined for 2021. (We do not prorate the dues if you renew or join later in the year.) For help with renewal or joining, contact us at [email protected].

We will help you with your shopping and send this very special gift directly to your lucky recipient and enclose a note that it is from you.In this book the reader will follow the paths of the native Ohlone people and experience the rugged life in the logging camps, mills, and ranches.

Learn how the crude trails, dusty ranch and private roads of the ridge properties through four different counties were connected by the building of the boulevard. This book introduces the waves of people who left the “flatlands” to succumb to the lore of the mountains of the area we call “home”. Complete with detailed maps and vintage photographs, this

book should be in the library of every person who loves local history.Get your copy by contacting Skyline History President Chuck Schoppe, email: [email protected] or phone: 408-867-9229. Your cost: $24.95 plus tax ($2.25) plus $8.55 shipping priority mail, for a total of $35.75.

South Skyline Fire & Rescue NewsBY ANDY SEIGEL, CAPTAIN, SSF&R

IncidentsUnlike the more northern parts of the state, we’ve had a quiet quarter. CZU has had many engines and personnel out of the county all summer at a dozen fires, including Dixie and Caldor. Still, most stations are staffed with at least one engine. As frontline engines go out on these major incidents, reserve engines are used to cover. When those break down, Cal Fire staffs the two Santa Cruz County Type 3 engines – E2936 (South Skyline) and E3638 (Loma Prieta). The state compensates the county for the use of the equipment, and our local Cal Fire crews have an engine to staff. In this way, these engines can pay for themselves over their lifetime.

Project UpdateWe’ve made a lot of progress on the apparatus shelter at Station 29. The building was substantially complete by the end of July, shown below. Since then, we’ve got the walk door installed, and the rollup door is expected any day now. We hope to have the project complete by the end of the year.

Recruiting for 2022We have a number of potential candidates for 2022 working their way through the application process. We’ll know for sure how many enter the academy by the next issue. Our training department was able to construct an academy schedule for 2022 which is significantly shorter than recent years.

We are always recruiting. There’s information on our website about the program under the Join Us tab. We’re happy to answer any questions; email us at [email protected] to get the ball rolling.Visit us at http://southskylinefire.org .

La Honda Fire Brigade – Chipper Program a HUGE SuccessBY PAT O’COFFEY

For 4 weekends in July/August, the La Honda Fire Brigade sponsored our annual chipping program. This year broke all prior records. We had 805 loads of debris brought to the chipping site. Ten of those loads were brought in by a large dump truck, so the amount of debris was much more than 805 typical truck bed loads. It was estimated that 2316 hours of work went into these loads by 197 households. Eighty of these households were first time contributors to the chipper program. Loads are brought in from all over our community. Not just from La Honda. The giant chipper (pictured right) was used to gulp down those loads in a short amount of time.Thank you for working on your defensible space and making our job easier. And many thanks to the 32 volunteers and firefighters who made the chipper program possible. Looking forward to next year’s program and another record!

Water Tank ProjectsBY JOHN DELONG, SSFSC

Years ago, the South Skyline FireSafe Council (SSFSC) created a “Water Tank” committee to explore the installation of water tanks in strategic locations for the purpose of providing additional water to refill water tanks on fire equipment. Wildland Fire strike teams usually have water tanks on their fire engines ranging in size from 200 to 1000 gallons. Those fire trucks empty quickly and have to be refilled, usually by using a tank truck with 3000 to 5000 gallons of water on board. Once the tank trucks are empty, they normally have to drive many miles to refill, which takes a great deal of time. SSFSC has been working to install discreet but convenient water tanks in strategic locations within our boundaries. This will save time refilling fire trucks and tankers, allowing more time to fight the fires. The committee is headed by our SSFSC President, Ken MacLean. His successes to date include:

• Assisting MROSD in their efforts and plans to install two 5000-gallon water tanks at the intersection of Portola Heights Road and Long Ridge Road. MROSD has purchased the tanks, cleared the tank site and is awaiting permits from San Mateo County before installation begins.

• When CalTrans rebuilt the huge washout of Skyline Blvd north of Las Cumbres in 2017 and 2018, they installed two temporary water tanks for landscape and construction uses. They were scheduled for removal after construction was completed. Ken successfully lobbied CalTrans to allow these tanks to remain and to be used for emergency wildfire water replenishment. He is currently working on the installation of hydrants for these tanks.

Legislature OKs $2M for Wildlife Corridor, Trail Crossing in Santa Cruz MountainsBY BAY CITY NEWS • PUBLISHED JULY 6, 2021 • UPDATED ON JULY 6, 2021 AT 5:30 AM

Editor’s Note: In 2015 Tanya Diamond and Ahiga Snyder of Pathways for Wildlife spoke at our general meeting about their efforts to collaborate with Midepeninsula Regional Open Space District and Caltrans to acquire funding to install wildlife crossing structures, such as culverts, for animals to move safely underneath roads. Here is an update on that project. Both hikers and wildlife will be able to better enjoy the Santa Cruz Mountains after the Highway 17 Wildlife and Trail Crossings Project is completed.Last week, the state Legislature included in the budget a proposal to fund the project, which will connect more than 30,000 acres in the Santa Cruz Mountains. The proposal consists of $2 million to finish the project’s design and construction, which includes a wildlife undercrossing and a trail overcrossing on Highway 17 connecting Santa Cruz and San Jose through the mountains.“The Highway 17 Wildlife and Trail Crossings Project will create a secure crossing for trail users to experience the beauty of our natural scenery and terrain while, at the

same time, facilitating the safe movement of our wildlife in the Santa Cruz Mountains,” state Sen. Dave Cortese said in a statementOnce the project is complete, wildlife should be able to find food and mates more easily. The project will also fill gaps in the Bay Area Ridge Trail and Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail, while linking other local trails, Cortese’s office said. The project, spawned by the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District, will also improve highway safety by alleviating collisions between drivers and animals.“One of the greatest challenges in furthering Midpen’s mission to preserve a connected greenbelt of public open space are land uses that fragment habitats and create barriers to the safe passage of wildlife, as well as people,” Midpen General Manager Ana Maria Ruiz said in a statement.“Highway 17 fragments thousands of acres in the Santa Cruz Mountains, limiting the ability of animals like mountain lions to find food and mates, and blocking several regional trail connections,” she said.

Las Cumbres Holiday Bizarre BazaarBY VICKI PERKINS

We are happy to welcome the mountain community to our annual Las Cumbres Holiday Bizarre Bazaar, with local artisans and wine — this year once again as a virtual event, November 1-30, 2021. You can shop safely from home, find unique hand-crafted products, and support local organizations dedicated to keeping us safe from wildfires. Mark your calendar for November 1 to visit the bazaar on our website, www.LasCumbresHolidayBazaar.org. The bazaar benefits South Skyline Firefighters (Company 29) and the South Skyline Fire Safe Council, two volunteer-based organizations which are so important to all of us in the Santa Cruz Mountains. South Skyline Firefighters plans to use funds for emergency medical supplies and towards a shelter and additional tank for their water tender. The South Skyline Fire Safe Council will use funds to support their spring and fall chipping program. In the wake of last year’s CZU fire, demand for the spring chipping program was so high that it exhausted most of SSFSC’s chipping budget for entire year, and they need additional funding to support the fall program.

If you are a local artist, winery or service provider with a web-based store and would like to participate, you can download an application from our website, www.LasCumbresHolidayBazaar.org, or email [email protected] to request an application. All types of businesses are welcome — last year we had jewelry, pottery, paintings, soaps, wineries, home goods, and fitness services. Applications are due October 10, 2021. We are asking participating businesses to donate a portion of their proceeds to one or both of our beneficiaries. This is a great opportunity to promote your business while supporting local organizations dedicated to reducing wildfire risk. We hope to be able to gather as a community once again in November 2022 for an in-person Holiday bazaar with delicious soups, local artists, wine tasting and children’s activities.

Grant Awarded to SC4ARES Group BY LISA SHORT CHUPITY W6LSC PIO for SC4ARC/ARES

The SC4ARES group is pleased to announce they are the recipients of a generous grant from Puente de la Costa del Sur Fire Relief Fund to build five (5) mobile emergency communications stations. These stations are self-contained, self-powered and fully equipped to be deployed to central locations of need. They will be housed in a trailer. This equipment will be used by trained SC4ARES operators to relay relevant information from public agencies, and relay requests for help as needed. When cell phone and internet services

are interrupted, ARES operators can use radio pathways (Winlink networks) to send email messages from affected community members to loved ones outside the disaster area. Winlink is a network of amateur radio authorized government-licensed stations that provides worldwide email using radio pathways where the internet is not present. It supports email with attachments, position reporting, weather and Information bulletins, and is well known for its role in interoperable emergency and disaster relief communications.

Many thanks to Peter Chupity, KI6FAO; Irma Rodriguez Mitton, KM6JVU; Pat O’Coffey, KJ6GMG; and Catherine Peery, KK6UFX for writing this grant with 24 hours notice! Your hard work is not going unnoticed.

Wood fern – rhizome frond sori Thomas 1961

Count on Coastal Wood FernBY SARAH SCHOEN

When hiking in the woods, count on coastal wood fern (Dryopteris arguta). While many other local species of ferns come and go above ground with the wet and dry seasons, coastal wood fern is here to stay. The ferns grow in perennial clumps in open redwood and mixed evergreen forests and occasionally in chaparral. The overall frond shape is triangular, and the lower stems have reddish hairs. Their fronds are twice pinnately compound, with the leaflets, or pinnae branching off from the main stem. The pinnae are also compound, looking like miniature versions of the main frond. The tips of the leaflets are pointed (arguta is Greek for sharp) and toothed or bristled. On the underside of reproductive fronds, along the midveins of the leaflets, are two rows of round sori, which contain the spores. Like all ferns, coastal woodfern undergoes a reproductive alternation of generations. The sporophyte generation is what we think of as the adult fern. The gametophyte generation, germinated from the spores, is a tiny, green, heart-shaped prothallus. It produces eggs and/or sperm, which fuse to become the fern. Coastal wood ferns can also reproduce vegetatively

from their underground rhizomes.Coastal wood fern has been used by indigenous peoples. The Ohlones gathered and ate the rhizomes in spring. They also used a decoction of the fronds as a hair wash. The Yuroks have used the fronds to clean mats and to lay over meat to keep flies off.Coastal wood fern is widely distributed in far western North America. It is found from British Columbia south to southern California below 7500’.

Take A Hike… Thornewood Open SpaceTwo Short Hikes with Hints of HistoryBY JOANNE IRWIN

If you live or hike along Skyline north of Page MiIl Road you may have noticed that singular finger of fog, often visible in the morning, that slips over the mountain and dips into the slender ravine above Portola Valley. That slender ravine is home to one of Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District’s smallest preserves: Thornewood. Beyond the obvious beauty of the fog-fed redwoods, visitors will also find vestiges of the area’s early lumber activity and remnants of the long-ago gardens of two wealthy estates.Eleven months out of the year, my favorite way to enter Thornewood Open Space is via the Bridle Trailhead, off Old La Honda Road in Portola Valley. This understated trailhead is easy to miss, so watch for the green Dennis Martin Creek sign on your right about a quarter mile past the intersection of Portola Road and Old La Honda Road. On either side of the sign you’ll find an informal pull-out, each can accommodate 4-6 cars. The Bridle Trail ascends quickly, following the Dennis Martin creek bed. Due to our prolonged drought the creek bed is currently completely dry. Still, the area feels lush, with second growth redwoods towering on either side of the trail. The creek is named for Dennis Martin, a lumberman who purchased the land in 1846. Originally part of the Mexican Rancho Cañada de Raimundo, the land changed hands several times before Julian and Edna Thorne, wealthy San Franciscans, purchased it in 1908. Thornewood Preserve takes its name from the Thorne’s summer home,

Thornewood House, designed and built by Gardner Dailey in the 1920s. Dailey also designed the farm buildings at the nearby Filoli, the Phleger Estate, the DeYoung Museum addition, buildings at Stanford and U.C. Berkeley, and the American Embassy in Manila. Currently Thornewood House is being restored and is closed to the public. While hiking the Bridle Trail you may notice some cement foundations, though the structure is long gone. Further up the trail you might spy another set of foundations, a moss-covered pile of lumber, or a thick chain hung between two large redwood trees. If you take the casual side trail that meanders off to the left of Bridle Trail, you’ll soon come upon a large iron circle, or rim, broken into three parts, perhaps a gear for some early logging equipment. This unofficial trail is marked with a sign that warns it is not maintained. Indeed, the trail is rough in places, especially in the upper portion that leads to Schilling Lake. However, if you don’t mind climbing over and ducking under some large logs, this trail reconnects with the upper portion of the Bridle Trail after it circles Schilling Lake, creating a 2-mile loop hike. In February this unofficial trail offers an extra treat: Fetid Adder’s Tongue (Scoliopus bigelovii) blooms in abundance in several places along the trail. The blooms are small and subtle, but the dusky purple spots on its low-growing tongue-like leaves make it easy to identify.

SOUTH SKYLINE ASSOCIATION 9

While these casual trails are not maintained by Open Space professionals, friendly hikers have added boards to help with creek crossings in the wetter winter months. The un-mapped spider web of informal trails makes it tricky to know if you are truly heading towards Schilling Lake. If your chosen trail does not lead to the lake, it will nonetheless provide a pleasant walk through the redwoods, and perhaps sightings of banana slugs. In the rainy season a wide variety of mushrooms can be found. The lake draws its name from the Schilling family, owners of Schilling Spice Company, who enjoyed a summer estate in this narrow valley. Interestingly, the wild beauty we now relish around Schilling Lake was once a manicured garden. As noted in The South Skyline Story, by Janet Schwind and the South Skyline Historical Society:

“Schilling created an artificial lake at the site of Dennis Martin’s 1853 steam-powered mill and

further adorned the landscape with waterfalls, rock sculptures, and riding trails. A crew of fifty to sixty gardeners removed brush, imported plants and tended the green houses. Others manufactured artificial rocks to complete the desired “forestscape” ...Schilling considered the mighty oaks and redwood trees God’s gift. All other forest plants were considered trash scheduled for removal. August Schilling would not approve of the way nature has reclaimed his landscape and turned into the kind of wild open space preferred by modern outdoor enthusiasts.” (p. 123)

Although mountain biking is not permitted, today many hikers, equestrians and dog-walkers enjoy the 4 miles of formal and informal trails that traverse Thornewood Open Space. Some prefer the 500-foot elevation change of the 1-mile Bridle trail (2 miles round trip), while others, especially those with young children, appreciate the easy-going, mostly flat profile of the Shilling Lake trail. Leashed dogs are welcome on both.

Bonus: In May I recommend entering Thornewood by the main entrance, off of Highway 84/La Honda Road (note: not OLD La Honda Rd.). The entrance is marked by two brick walls on either side of the entrance road. The wall on the right has the numbers 895-897 on it. The small parking area is a short way down the entrance road, on your right. The gentle 3/4-mile Schilling Lake Trail (1.5 round trip) begins in oak woodland and ends in a redwood grove that surrounds a small “lake” (many think of it as a large pond). In spring the trail displays an impressive array of wildflowers: Crimson Columbine, Fremont Lily, Globe Lily, Wooly Paintbrush, Douglas Iris, and Pacific Star Flower, to name a few. The trail is an enjoyable mix of sun and shade. Be sure to watch for the occasional opening between the trees; it offers an expansive view of the East Bay hills, from Mt. Hamilton in the south to the Dumbarton Bridge, and the sparkling San Francisco Bay beneath.
