ACTING PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE Dear Ss Peter and Paul’s Community, How wonderful it was to be able to share in the excitement and delight of our returning Year 5/ 6 campers last Friday afternoon! There were many highlights mentioned, the giant swing at Amaze’n’Things, The Nobbies Walk, feeding the pelicans and Fr Jerald playing the saxophone during his visit on the Thursday night. The staff reported that the children were wonderfully behaved and displayed impeccable manners towards each other and those that they came in contact with. We are very proud of our Year 5/ 6 cohort. Our thanks goes out to ‘PJ’ (past student and brother of Nicky) and Ashleigh Pearson (past student teacher) who volunteered their time to support our students and teachers Helen Kalac, Kristina Stephanou, Stephanie D’Astoli and Peter Lynch. Curriculum News On Friday, please check your child’s bag for a curriculum newsletter outlining the curriculum for each of the learning areas this term. The curriculum newsletter and home learning outline are currently being uploaded to class blogs. Digital Technology This Friday we begin our Digital Technology classes in the Computer Lab. Each week 4 classes will meet Ms Stephanou for a 45 minute lesson that will follow the Victorian Curriculum. This means that over a 2 week period each class will receive instruction on digital technology skills. Each class will be accompanied by their class teacher so that the learning that takes place in the lab will be reinforced during class times also. You will notice DT outlined on your child’s Curriculum newsletter, and next week we will put a P-6 overview in the newsletter. Reporting Feedback Last term reports were sent home. You may recall that a new reporting format was used. If you have any feedback regarding the format, layout or content of the report, we would love to hear from you… please email/speak with myself or Susan Harrison [email protected] or [email protected]

Please ensure that you have returned your child’s portfolio of work relating to last term as soon as possible. Awards At next week's assembly you will notice that we have introduced a new element. We will make award presentations for 2 categories: Our first award will be the VISIBLE LEARNER AWARD - this will be awarded by each class teacher to a student who exhibits a disposition of a visible learner. For example, a time manager, self manager, communicator, problem solver etc. Our second award will be the VALUES AWARD - this will be decided upon by peers from within the class relating to the Value currently being studied. For example, caring Newsletter & Forms Next term we would like to move toward digital circulation of our Newsletter. This is a much more efficient practice saving a lot of time and costs in administration. It is also easy for parents to read at a time that suits them. Please ensure that your email details are up to date so that the transition is smooth. We are also going to move across next term to CareMonkey for all our forms and permissions. We will trial this shortly with a concert permission form as a test run. Again, please ensure that your details are up to date.

Acting Principal’s Message Cont ... A small number of hard copies will continue to be made available for those who are unable to access the digital format. Wine & Cheese and Art Show - next Friday 4th August We look forward to another community event next week that encourages us to gather in friendship. This is purely a social function - with the added bonus of viewing the children’s art! I know that Mrs Gill and all the students are working very hard to create a lovely display for us. I hope that many parents will support the night. Please read further on in the newsletter for details. Chess Club Earlier this week we had the Manningham Leader Newspaper attend as they were excited to report on our Chess Club activities. The article will be published in next week’s edition so please look out for that! Later in the newsletter we have included an item that is currently appearing on the Catholic Education Melbourne’s website. A reminder following our recent incursion, Chess Club for all students will be run each Friday lunchtime in our library during Term 3. Every second week our students will be joined by elderly citizens of Manningham for some friendly chess matches. Please encourage your child to attend. The chess club is going to be supervised and supported by our teachers, however if any parent or grandparent would like to attend to either learn, play or watch, your assistance would be appreciated. The main role of the helpers is to assist with setting up, pair up the attendees and then assist with packing up. Approximately 1 hour of your time is all that is required. If you are able to assist with one chess club meeting or multiple, that would be appreciated. Please leave your name at the office. Please note over the page we have included a return slip regarding enrolments for current students for 2018. To assist with our future planning if you are not returning to Ss Peter & Paul’s next year kindly complete and return to the school office. Finally, the Annual Report to the Community, as prepared by Maria McIntyre before her retirement, is now available on our website and also in the office. I encourage you to access this and read at your convenience. Have a great week! Anita Kelliher

SCHOOL NEWS

Performing Arts News - Concert School Production: Jack and The Beanstalk - Wednesday 6th September Our School Production this year is “Jack and the Beanstalk in the Appalachian Mountains”. It is a traditional tale where a young boy defeats his giant and is set in rural Appalachia, the eastern mountains of North America. The folk tradition develops in our students a focus on stringed instruments, storytelling tunes and a good hoedown dance. Like in Australia, English and Scots-Irish folk traditions were brought to Northern America by immigrants. European immigrants, African American and Native American folk influenced the music to a lesser degree. The productions music is mostly sourced from this tradition with some surprises! The script is fun! Sweetwater Holler is where the play is set. A holler is a hollow or valley. Preparations are underway. Hope to see you there! Date: September 6th Venue: 2 Vision St, Burwood East – Crossways Church. (Plenty of parking onsite) Tickets go on sale shortly. Stay tuned for further updates. If you can help with this please contact me via the school office or by email on [email protected] Many thanks,

Rachel Steinmann Performing Arts Teacher

Another reminder we are still looking for two key concert props... ¯ A light weight single bed - a wrought iron old fashioned feel

Mini Art Exhibition We are thrilled to announce a Mini Art Exhibition here at Ss Peter and Paul’s. Our artists have been learning a variety of brushstroke techniques to create masterpieces on canvases. Each of these artworks will be on display for your perusal on Friday August 4th. The first viewing is at 3:30pm. This is when the artists themselves can walk and talk with their families and friends about their showpieces. It is vital that our guests ask questions of the artists. These could be: What were you learning to do? How did you know if you were successful? What else can you tell me about this glorious artwork? FAMILIES ARE INVITED TO COLLECT THEIR CHILDREN AS USUAL FROM THE CLASSROOMS AT 3.30PM AND THEN ADVANCE TO THE ART/LIBRARY BUILDING. The second viewing is at 7.00pm during the Wine and Cheese night. The cost is $5 and it is a child free event. We are so looking forward to sharing our new learnings with the Ss Peter and Paul’s community. Take care Lana Gill If you’d like to be involved in helping prior to the event please let me know. It’ll only require an hour of your time. Thanks in advance.

From the Religious Education leader During Term 3, each class will be attending a Weekly Parish Mass on a Thursday morning. Mass starts at 9.05 and will be held in the main Church. We would love to see parents and siblings sharing in the Mass, and encourage attending family members to sit with their child. Jesus said, “Let the children come!” Each child who has not made his/her First Communion is welcomed to go up at Communion time to receive a ‘blessing’. We will be encouraging the children to cross their arms and place their hands on their shoulders to show the Eucharistic Minister that they are to receive a blessing. This is within the spirit of the Gospel, which we, as a Catholic school are living through the daily experience of a Jesus centred community. By taking part in a weekly mass, we are connecting with the parishioners of Ss Peter and Paul’s Parish. The response has been very positive and promising from all involved.

LIBRARY NEWS Welcome back to a new term ! Each year the Children's Book Council of Australia celebrates Children's Book Week (Week 6 19-26 August 2017). This is a celebration of Australian Children's Literature and brings everyone together to focus on books. The theme for 2017 is 'Escape to Everywhere'. Library lessons throughout this term will focus on celebrating Book Week 2017. Each week I will be presenting one or two shortlisted books from the various award categories and we will engage in activities, appreciating the talents of Australian writers and illustrators. Please ask your children about our focus books so that you can stay in touch. We hope that over the school holidays your children were able to add to their reading challenge lists. I have added books which were read throughout term 2 during library lessons so students may see their numbers adding up! There are 7 weeks to go so keep encouraging your children and see how many books they can read! Scholastic Brochures for Issue #5 have been sent home, please finalise your order by Friday 28th July if you spot something of interest. There are some great titles available which would make excellent Christmas gifts. We earn reward dollars from every sale, putting more resources back into the school, there is no pressure to buy, looking through the brochure you can get your child talking about books and what they might like to borrow when next they visit. Until next time ,……. Escape to Everywhere! Claudia and Jenny Teacher/Librarian

EARN AND LEARN IS BACK! When you shop at Woolworths from the 26th of July and spend over $10, you will be eligible to receive ‘Earn & Learn stickers’, one for every $10 spent. We will be sending home sticker sheets shortly which you can pop your sticker on. You can also download your own sticker sheet using the QR code above. Once you have completed a sheet (60 stickers), please pop it in the box in the foyer. Of course loose stickers can also be placed in the box. Towards the end of program mid-September – we will ask for partly completed sheets and loose stickers as only complete sheets count for our Tally. Last time this program ran, we earned thousands of dollars worth of new equipment for the school, and hope with your support, we can again!

Caring

Over the next weeks children across the school will begin to explore the value of CARING

The Learning Intentions for this focus on Values are: • To help students identify the various forms that caring can take. • For students to identify behaviours and values that promote a

sense of belonging and safety.

This focus helps our students to demonstrate empathy, support and compassion for others.

Discuss with your child / children:

What does it mean to be a caring person?

Brainstorm some times when caring is demonstrated in your life.
