LIFELONG SERVICE “I am going fishing.” What an announcement! If asked who made it, and not told it was a Bible quote, we might guess “Grandpa” or “Uncle Fred,” or admit, “I said that last summer!” But it is a Bible quote, from today’s Gospel. The person who said it also once de- clared, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Yes, it’s Peter! So today’s announcement seems quite the comedown. Last Sunday Jesus said, “As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” But Peter seems determined to return to his pre-apostolic occupation, until Jesus in- tervenes, making Peter’s later announcement deeper, “Lord, you know that I love you,” and Peter’s apostolic calling clearer, “Tend my sheep.” Peter does so. Acts presents the consequences: Peter declares, “We must obey God rather than men.” As Revelation proclaims, “Worthy is the Lamb”—to receive Peter’s lifelong ser- vice, and ours. Copyright © J. S. ST. DAMIEN DE VEUSTER OF MOLOKA’I: (JANUARY 3, 1840 – APRIL 15, 1889) May 10. Saint Damien de Veuster became so well known for his work among the lepers in Hawaii that Moloka’i almost became his surname. Dedicating his life to those suffering from Hansen's disease, Damien made the world aware of their plight. He succumbed to the disease and died in 1889. Some people thought Damien was a hero for going to Moloka’i and others thought he was crazy. When a Protestant clergyman wrote that Damien was guilty of immoral behavior, Robert Louis Stevenson vigorously defended him in an “Open Letter to Dr. Hyde.” For more about St. Damien, visit: https://www.franciscanmedia.org/saint-damien-

de-veuster-of-moloka-i/ or, ask a SSPP third, fourth or fifth grade student. They studied St. Damien in March, as part of their study of the Virtue of Respect.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The Gospel today sees Peter and his colleagues after the Resurrection, returning to Galilee and resuming the family business. They are fishing by night. Although it is true that fish feed by night, the mention of darkness here is more about the human spirit than it is about fishing advice. Modern life keeps darkness effectively under control; much of the world has been glowing radiantly through the night for a century. Yet just as surely as the Risen Christ breaks into Peter’s fishing, so does he break into the usual patterns of our own darkness, electric lights notwithstanding. It is Easter, and we are the people of the light. In our tradition, Evening Prayer, celebrated in monasteries, parishes, cathedrals, and homes everywhere, is a kind of solemn protest against the darkness and its claims, an act of praise for our light‑bearing God, and a commitment to carrying that light forward. Sunset is a turning point of our day, felt less acutely in an electrified world, but still an effective reminder that one day darkness overtakes us all. Yet our Eastering has taught us in a hundred ways that the victory belongs to the Bearer of Light. Easter summons us to transform our everyday “blackouts,” perhaps in a way as simple as a whispered prayer of thanks at evening for the blessings of the day. —James Field, Copyright © J. S. By Fr. Bill Peckman A few days back I wrote about how it is be er to seek answers for problems instead of bemoaning or resen ng a problem. Seeking an-swers is a sign of hope that prob-lems can be solved. In our diocese, we have been asked by the bishop to lower the number of masses. Many places in the diocese have only one Mass as it is. They are usually paired with a parish or parishes that also have Masses. This means that Sunday mornings are a full morning for priests; whether that priests has one huge parish or has mul -ple parishes which require much driving between Masses. In his le er that was published in the Catholic Missourian, the bishop referred to some Masses as “Masses of conven-ience.” What is that? Parishes are obliged to provide Masses to accommodate the size of congrega on they have. Take note of that. So, for example, Parish A has a church that will sit 400 comfortably. Par-ish A also has four Masses. The Mass a endance at Parish A is 1,000 on an aver-age weekend. This means that each Mass has an average of 250 per Mass in a Church that seats 400. The combined sea ng capacity at all of the Masses is a poten al of 1,600. That means that there are 600 empty seats at those Masses. That means the parish is overshoo ng by 600 (1-1/2 Masses). That means one Mass is there for the convenience of the people and not necessary. When the Church has plenty of priests, we can accommodate this, although the wis-dom of doing such might be ques oned. However, the diocese does not have plen-ty of priests. Some years back, a parish with four masses and 1,000 mass-goers probably would have had two priests serv-ing that parish (a pastor and associate), which means each priest would have had two Masses. Associates are rare now. The Mass schedule has to be handled by one priest, even if he must drive between mul-

ple parishes to accomplish that task. The number of priests is declining and their average age is increasing. You might think, “So what? Mass is all the priest does, right?” Wrong. Most priests work 50-70 hours a week with one day off (if they can take it). Their days are filled with pastoral work, administra ve work, educa on, and so on. They work those kind of hours because they have to do the work once done by mul ple priests. Most priests delegate away much of what doesn’t require a priest, but even then, it is s ll long hours. I am not complaining, I am just saying how it is. Many priests I know do not live healthy lifestyles (myself included) be-cause me for exercise and meals o en gets sacrificed to tend to the flock. Again, remember, they are usually doing the work once done by more than one priest. Yes, I am aware that there are lazy priests, just like there are lazy people in any pro-fession. But, the vast majority of priests I know work hard. Part of the solu on in the near term, is to consolidate Masses and delegate work not needing to be done by a priest. However, because a properly func oning parish func ons like a loving family (and not a business) the rela onships a pastor fos-ters with his flock ma ers. That moves beyond just seeing him at Mass or during a pastoral encounter. So, it isn't just about the work a priests gets done — that is a dysfunc onal way to look at priesthood. The priest is a person as well; what prop-er es apply to anyone else when it comes to health and aging, apply to him as well. I can say it is hard to get to know people when I have to run from one event to an-other. The bigger part of the solu on is finding, encouraging, nurturing, and otherwise doing what is necessary to find the priests we need to right the ship. For many years, we have gone overseas to find the priests we need. I am eternally grateful for the men who have le their families, culture, and countries behind, willing to serve and preach in a language that is not their na-

ve tongue. (Think about that the next me you complain about not being able to

understand him.) That makes this diocese mission territory: a diocese unable to sus-tain itself from its own na ve popula on in regard to voca ons.

We can't have it both ways. We can't say “I want abundant Mass mes and a priest there when I need him,” and at the same

me not do anything to get more priests from among our own. One of these will have to give. Unfortunately, it is the Mass

mes. We might try to hide behind, “If only the Church would ordain______” but all that does is absolve ourselves of doing what is necessary because we know the Church won't be doing that. We can play “not me/not my son” and that too will only contribute more to the problem. It will ensure that this round of cuts is not a one me thing nor will it allow us to ex-pand rather than contract. All this being said, who do we need? We need men who would be good dads and husbands otherwise. We need men who will joyfully sacrifice and endure suffering for Christ and His Church. We need men who will follow Christ and His Church without trying to adapt and compromise for the sake of self-indulgence. We need manly priests who are in control of their emo ons, who can exercise pa ence in the face of anger, who can be present to the person in need, who can see the en-

rety of the flock as worthy of his me and energy, who can restrain his sexual appe tes for the greater good of the King-dom. As seminaries are not magic facto-ries who can turn a selfish boy into a man, we get out what we put in. We are not without hope. The path is not easy to be sure. Why should we care? Be-cause we need the sacraments to forge forward in our mission given us by Christ. Truth be told, I would rather be concen-tra ng on filling those empty seats than cu ng Masses. I would also like have brothers by my side to expand who we are and what we do. Complaining and resen ng are never part of the solu on. Saying “if I can't have my preferred Mass me I will go somewhere else or quit going to Church” … is not part of the solu on. Finding ways to help your parish by volunteering and helping finance the staff needed and work needed to thrive IS part of the solu on. Fostering and suppor ng voca ons … even in your own family and even by looking at your-self … IS part of the solu on. As I said, a correctly func oning parish is a family; we don't bail on the family when things get

ght.
