3-SAFETY INFORMATIONWhen you ride your snowmobile, you must know and usethe following for your safety. Severe injury or death mayresult if you ignore any of the following.

Before operating 1. Read the Owner’s Manual and all labels before oper-

ating this snowmobile. Become familiar with all of theoperating controls and their function. Consult aYamaha dealer about any control or function you donot understand.

2. This snowmobile was not manufactured for use onpublic streets, roads, or highways. Such use is pro-hibited by law, and you could collide with anothervehicle.

3. This snowmobile is designed to carry the OPERA-TOR ONLY. Passengers are prohibited. Carrying a passengercan cause loss of control.

4. Do not operate the snowmobile after drinking alcoholor taking drugs. Your ability to operate the snowmo-bile is reduced by the influence of alcohol or drugs.

5. For safety and proper care of the snowmobile, alwaysperform the pre-operation checks on pages 6-1–6-8before starting the engine. Check the throttle, brake,and steering for proper operation every time beforestarting the engine. Make sure that the throttle levermoves freely and it returns to the home position whenit is released.

6. Apply the parking brake before starting the engine.Never drive the snowmobile with the parking brakeapplied. This may overheat the brake disc and reducebraking ability.

7. Do not allow anyone to stand behind the snowmobilewhen starting, inspecting, or adjusting the snowmo-bile. A broken track, track fittings, or debris thrown bythe track could be dangerous to the operator orbystanders.

8. Handle fuel with care; it is HIGHLY FLAMMABLE.� Never add fuel when the engine is running or hot.

Allow the engine to cool for several minutes afterrunning.

� Use an approved fuel container.� Fill the fuel tank outdoors with extreme care.

Never remove the fuel cap indoors. Never fill thefuel tank indoors.

� Never refuel while smoking or in the vicinity of anopen flame.

� Make sure that the fuel tank cap is closed securelyafter refueling. Wipe up any spilled fuel immedi-ately.

9. If you swallow some gasoline, inhale a lot of gasolinevapor, or get some gasoline into your eyes, see yourdoctor immediately. If any gasoline spills on your skinor clothing, immediately wash your skin with soapand water, and change your clothes.

10. Wear protective clothing. Wear an approved helmet,and a face shield or goggles. Also, wear a good qual-ity snowmobile suit, boots, and a pair of gloves or mit-tens that will permit use of your thumbs and fingersfor operation of the controls.

Operation1. Do not run the engine indoors, except when starting

the engine to transport the snowmobile in or out ofthe building. Open the outside doors; exhaust fumesare dangerous.

2. Be careful where you ride. There may be obstacleshidden beneath the snow. Stay on established trailsto minimize your exposure to hazards. Ride slowlyand cautiously when you ride off of established trails.Hitting a rock or stump, or running into wires couldcause an accident and injury.


3. This snowmobile is not designed for use on surfacesother than snow or ice. Use on dirt, sand, grass,rocks, or bare pavement may cause loss of controland may damage the snowmobile.

4. Avoid operating on glare ice, or on snow which has alot of dirt or sand mixed in. Operation under suchconditions will damage or result in rapid wear of skirunners, drive track, slide runners, and drive sprock-ets.

5. Always ride with other snowmobilers when going on aride. You may need help if you run out of fuel, have anaccident, or damage your snowmobile.

6. Many surfaces such as ice and hard-packed snowrequire much longer stopping distances. Be alert,plan ahead and begin decelerating early. The bestbraking method on most surfaces is to release thethrottle and apply the brake gently—not suddenly.

Maintenance and storage1. Do not leave the snowmobile on its left side for an

extended period of time. Fuel may leak out from thefuel breather hose.

2. Modifications made to the snowmobile not approvedby Yamaha, or the removal of original equipment mayrender your snowmobile unsafe for use that maycause severe personal injury. Modifications may alsomake the snowmobile illegal to use.

3. Never store the snowmobile with fuel in the fuel tankinside a building where ignition sources are presentsuch as hot water and space heaters, an open flame,sparks, clothes dryers, and the like. Allow the engineto cool off before storing the snowmobile in anenclosed space.

4. Always refer to the “STORAGE” section if the snow-mobile is to be stored for an extended period.

5. Maintain or replace safety and instruction labels, asnecessary.

Main switchThe main switch controls the following items.

1 “OFF” The ignition circuit is switched off. The key can be removed only in this position.

2 “ON” The ignition circuit is switched on. The engine can be started.

Throttle override system (T.O.R.S.)If the carburetor or throttle cable should malfunction dur-ing operation, the T.O.R.S. will operate when the throttlelever is released. The T.O.R.S. is designed to interrupt the ignition andkeep the engine revolution speed between 2,800 and3,000 r/min if the carburetor fails to return to idle whenthe lever is released.

� If the T.O.R.S. is activated, make sure that thecause of the malfunction has been corrected andthat the engine can be operated without a prob-lem before restarting the engine.

� Be sure to use the specified spark plug and sparkplug cap. Otherwise, the T.O.R.S. will not workproperly.

Coolant temperature warning lightThis snowmobile is equipped with a self-diagnosis devicewhich is able to detect a malfunctioning sensor, discon-nected coupler, broken lead, abnormally high coolanttemperature, etc.The coolant temperature warning light warns the rider ofthe above problems by flashing or staying on. If neces-sary, ask a Yamaha dealer for further details. (See page5-4 for warning light flash patterns.)

After the engine starts, this light flashes three times tocheck the bulb, and then goes off if there are no prob-lems. (See page 5-4 for warning light flash pattern num-ber 0.)If it does not flash, have a Yamaha dealer inspect theelectrical circuit.

WARNING@

� If the coolant temperature warning light flashescontinually or stays on during operation, theremay be some problem with the electrical circuit,lead couplers, or engine cooling system. (Seepage 5-4 for warning light flash pattern numbers1–10.)

� Stop the engine and allow it to cool off. Then,check that the wire harness couplers are con-nected properly in the engine compartment andthat the coolant level of the coolant reservoir iswithin the specified range. (See page 6-2.)

� If the coolant temperature warning light remainson after the engine has been started or if itflashes, note the flash pattern, and then have aYamaha dealer inspect the snowmobile as soonas possible.

“D.C.S.” (Detonation Control System) indicatorlightThis snowmobile is equipped with a system which is ableto detect and control engine detonations in order to pro-tect the engine from damage.The “D.C.S.” indicator light 1 flashes to inform the riderthat the detonation control system has been activated.

After the engine starts, the “D.C.S.” indicator light flashesthree times to check the bulb, and then goes off if thereare no problems. (See page 5-6 for “D.C.S.” indicatorlight flash pattern number 0.)If it does not flash, have a Yamaha dealer inspect theelectrical circuit.

If a detonation is detected by the knock sensor, the sys-tem automatically adjusts the ignition timing for optimalfiring, and the “D.C.S.” indicator light flashes. The systemhelps protect the engine from detonation damage whilethe light is flashing. (See page 5-6 for “D.C.S.” indicatorlight flash pattern numbers 1 and 2.)

NOTE:@

� If the detonation level increases, the “D.C.S.” indica-tor light flash pattern changes from pattern number 1to pattern number 2, and the ignition timing is furtheradjusted. If excessive detonation levels continue,maximum engine speed is reduced to protect theengine.

� Engine performance will decline according to the det-onation level.

After detonation stops, the engine protection control isdeactivated, and the “D.C.S.” indicator light goes off.

NOTE:@

� Use premium gasoline only, otherwise detonationsmay occur. (See page 6-1 for more details.)

� If the carburetor settings are not appropriate for theoperating conditions, detonations may occur.

� If the “D.C.S.” indicator light flashes continuously, it isrecommended to consult a Yamaha dealer.

Engine stop switchThe engine stop switch 1 is used to stop the engine inan emergency. Simply push 2 the stop switch to stop theengine. To start the engine, pull 3 the stop switch andproceed with starting the engine. (See page 7-1 for moredetails.) During the first few rides, practice using the stop switchso that you can react quickly in an emergency.

Brake leverThe snowmobile is stopped by braking the entire drivesystem. Squeeze the brake lever towards the handlebar grip tostop the snowmobile.

When the brake lever is operated, the brake light will illu-minate. @

CAUTION:@

Make sure that the brake lever end does not projectout over the handlebar end. This will help preventbrake lever damage when the snowmobile is placedon its side for service. @

The brake lever is equipped with a position adjuster.To adjust the brake lever position:1. Loosen the locknut 1.2. While lightly pushing the brake lever in direction a,

finger tighten the adjusting bolt 2 to set the brakelever to the desired position.

3. Tighten the locknut securely after adjusting the brakelever.

Parking brake leverWhen parking the snowmobile or starting the engine,apply the parking brake by moving the brake lever 1 tothe left. To release the parking brake, move the parking brakelever 1 to the right.

Drive guardThe drive guard is designed to cover the V-belt clutchand V-belt in case parts break or come loose.

� Never run the engine with the V-belt or driveguard removed.

LouversThis snowmobile is equipped with louvers for ventilationlocated in the shroud. The upper left louver has a platethat can be installed or removed depending on the ridingconditions.

Plastic plateWhen operating the snowmobile in deep powder snow,be sure to install the plastic plate 1 over the upper leftlouver 2.

WARNING@

Never install the plastic plate or any similar objectover the upper right louver 3, otherwise the discbrake will not be cooled properly. @

NOTE:@

The plastic plate is located to the left of the louver in theplastic plate holder. @

When operating the snowmobile out of deep powdersnow, be sure to remove the plastic plate from the louver.

Steel plateWhen operating the snowmobile in areas where theambient temperature is 5 °C (41.5 °F) or higher, the steelplate 1 can be removed as needed. Before removingthe steel plate, consult a Yamaha dealer.

FuelMake sure that there is sufficient fuel in the fuel tank.

NOTE:@

� Your Yamaha engine has been designed to use pre-mium unleaded gasoline with a pump octane number[(R+M)/2] of 91 or higher, or a research octane num-ber of 97 or higher.

� If the recommended fuel is not used, the engine maynot perform as it should.

WARNING@

� Fuel is HIGHLY FLAMMABLE and poisonous.Check the “SAFETY INFORMATION” sectioncarefully before refueling. (See page 3-2.)

� Do not fill the fuel tank above the bottom of thefiller tube 1. Fuel could overflow if the snowmo-bile is tilted on its side or if the ambient tempera-ture rises, causing the fuel to warm up andexpand.

Riding your snowmobile

Getting to know your snowmobileA snowmobile is a rider active vehicle, and your ridingposition and your balance are the two basic factors ofmaneuvering your snowmobile. Riding your snowmobile requires skills acquired throughpractice over a period of time. Take the time to learn thebasic techniques well before attempting more difficultmaneuvers. Riding your new snowmobile can be a very enjoyableactivity, providing you with hours of pleasure. However, itis essential to familiarize yourself with the operation ofthe snowmobile to achieve the skill necessary to enjoyriding safely. Before operating the snowmobile, read thisOwner’s Manual completely and understand the opera-tion of the controls. Pay particular attention to the safety information onpages 3-1–3-3. Please read all warning and cautionlabels on your snowmobile. Also, read the Snowmobiler’sSafety Handbook that is supplied with your snowmobile.

Learning to ride your snowmobileBefore you ride, always perform the pre-operationchecks listed on pages 8-1–8-3. The short time spentchecking the condition of the snowmobile will berewarded with added safety and a more reliable snow-mobile. Always wear the proper clothing for both warmthand to help protect you from injury if an accident occurs.Become familiar with operating your snowmobile at lowspeeds, even if you are an experienced rider. Do notattempt to operate at maximum performance until youare totally familiar with the snowmobile’s handling andperformance characteristics.

Set the parking brake and follow the instructions on page7-1 to start the engine. Once it has warmed up, you areready to begin riding your snowmobile.

To start out and accelerate1. With the engine idling, release the parking brake. 2. Apply the throttle slowly and smoothly. The V-belt

clutch will engage and you will start to accelerate.

WARNING@

The operator should always keep both hands on thehandlebar. Never put your feet outside the runningboards. Avoid high speeds until you have becomethoroughly familiar with your snowmobile and all ofits controls. @

BrakingWhen slowing down or stopping, release the throttle andapply the brake gently—not suddenly.

WARNING@

� Many surfaces such as ice and hard-packed snowrequire much longer stopping distances. Be alert,plan ahead, and begin decelerating early.

� Improper use of the brake can cause the drivetrack to lose traction, reduce control, andincrease the possibility of an accident.

TurningFor most snow surfaces, “body English” is the key toturning.As you approach a curve, slow down and begin to turnthe handlebar in the desired direction. As you do so, putyour weight on the running board to the inside of the turnand lean your upper body into the turn.This procedure should be practiced at low speed manytimes, in a large flat area with no obstacles. Once youhave learned this technique, you should be able to per-form it at higher speeds or in tighter curves. Lean moreas the turn gets sharper or is made at higher speeds.Improper riding procedures such as abrupt throttlechanges, excessive braking, incorrect body movements,or too much speed for the sharpness of the turn maycause the snowmobile to tip.If your snowmobile begins to tip while turning, lean moreinto the turn to regain balance. If necessary, gradually letoff on the throttle or steer to the outside of the turn.

Remember:Avoid higher speeds until you are thoroughly familiar withthe operation of your snowmobile.

Riding uphillYou should practice first on gentle slopes. Try more diffi-cult climbs only after you have developed your skill. Asyou approach a hill, accelerate before you start the climb,and then reduce the throttle opening to prevent track slip-page. It is also important to keep your weight on theuphill side at all times. On climbs straight up the hill thiscan be accomplished by leaning forward and, on steeperinclines, standing on the running boards and leaning for-ward over the handlebar. (Also see “Traversing a slope.”)Slow down as you reach the crest of the hill, and be pre-pared to react to obstacles, sharp drops, or other vehi-cles or people which may be on the other side. If you areunable to continue up a hill, do not spin the track. Stopthe engine and set the parking brake. Then pull the rearof the snowmobile around to point the snowmobile backdown the hill. Do not get on the downhill side of thesnowmobile. When the snowmobile is pointed downhill,restart the engine, release the parking brake, anddescend the hill.

WARNING@

Side hills and steep slopes are not recommended fora novice snowmobiler. @

Riding downhillWhen riding downhill, keep speed to a minimum. It isimportant to apply just enough throttle to keep the clutchengaged while descending the hill. This will allow you touse engine compression to help slow the snowmobile,and to keep the snowmobile from rolling freely down thehill. Also apply the brake frequently, with light pressure.

WARNING@

Use extra caution when applying the brake during adescent. Excessive braking will cause the drive trackto lock, causing a loss of control. @

Traversing a slope

WARNING@

Traversing slopes is not recommended for a novicesnowmobiler. @

Traversing a slope requires you to properly position yourweight to maintain proper balance. As you travel acrossthe slope, lean your body to position your weight towardsthe uphill side. A recommended riding position is to kneelwith the knee of the downhill leg on the seat and the footof the uphill leg on the running board. This position willmake it easier for you to shift your body weight asneeded.Snow and ice are slippery, so be prepared for the possi-bility that your snowmobile could begin to slip sidewayson the slope. If this happens, steer in the direction of theslide if there are no obstacles in your path. As you regainproper balance, gradually steer again in the direction youwish to travel.If your snowmobile starts to tip, steer down the hill toregain balance.

WARNING@

If you are unable to maintain correct balance, andyour snowmobile is going to tip over, dismount yoursnowmobile immediately on the uphill side. @

Ice or icy surfaceOperating on ice or icy surfaces can be very dangerous.Traction for turning, stopping, or starting is much lessthan that on snow.

WARNING@

When you have to operate on ice or icy surfaces,drive slowly and cautiously. Avoid accelerating, turn-ing, or braking rapidly. Steering is minimal anduncontrolled spins are an ever-present danger. @

Hard-packed snowIt can be more difficult to negotiate on hard-packed snowas both the skis and drive track do not have as muchtraction as when the snowmobile is operated on freshsnow. Avoid rapid acceleration, turning, or braking.


Operation on surfaces other than snow or iceOperation of your snowmobile on surfaces other thansnow or ice should be avoided. Operation under suchconditions will damage or result in rapid wear of the skirunners, drive track, slide runners, and drive sprockets.Operation of the snowmobile under the following condi-tions should be avoided at all costs:1. Dirt 2. Sand 3. Rocks 4. Grass 5. Bare pavement

Other conditions that should be avoided for the sake ofdrive track and slide runner life are:1. Glare ice surfaces 2. Snow mixed with a lot of dirt and sand

All the above conditions have one thing in common inregard to drive track and slide runners; little or no lubri-cating ability. Drive track and all slide rail systems requirelubrication (snow or water) between the slide runnersand the slide metal. In the absence of lubrication, theslide runners will rapidly wear and in severe cases, liter-ally melt away, and the drive track will be subjected todamage or failure.Also traction aids such as studs, cleats, etc., may causefurther track damage or failure.

Maximizing drive track lifeRecommendations

Track tensionDuring initial break-in, the new drive track will tend tostretch quickly as the track settles. Be sure to correct thetrack tension and alignment frequently. (See pages8-22–8-24 for adjustment procedures.) A loose track canslip (ratchet), derail or catch on suspension parts caus-ing severe damage. Do not overtighten the drive track,otherwise it may increase the friction between the trackand the slide runners, resulting in the rapid wear of bothcomponents. Also, this may put an excessive load on thesuspension components, resulting in component failure.

Marginal snowThe drive track and the slide runners are lubricated andcooled by snow and water. To prevent the drive track andslide runners from overheating, avoid sustained high-speed usage in areas such as icy trails, frozen lakes andrivers that have minimal snow coverage. An overheatedtrack will be weakened internally, which may cause fail-ure or damage.

Off-trail ridingAvoid off-trail riding until there is sufficient snow cover-age. It generally takes several feet of snow to provide agood overall base to properly cover debris, such asrocks, logs, etc. If snow coverage is not sufficient, stay ontrails to avoid impact damage to the drive track.

Studded trackIn general, track life will be shortened when studs areinstalled. Drilling stud holes into the drive track will cutthe internal fibers, which weakens the track. Avoid spin-ning the drive track. Studs may catch on an object andpull out of the track, leaving tears and damage aroundthe already weakened area. To minimize possible dam-age, consult your stud manufacturer for installation andstud pattern recommendations. Yamaha does not recommend track studding.

TransportingWhen transporting your snowmobile on a trailer or in atruck, observe the following recommendations to helpprotect it from damage:

� Make sure that the fuel level in the fuel tank is lowerthan the bottom of the carburetors. Otherwise, thevibration and bumps from the road surface couldmake it possible for fuel to flow through the carbure-tors into the crankcase. This can result in “hydrostaticlock,” a condition where the engine cannot rotatebecause of fuel accumulated in the engine. Severeengine damage can result from hydrostatic lock.When possible, the fuel tank should be empty duringtransportation, especially if the trip will be longer than30 minutes.

� If transporting the snowmobile in an open trailer ortruck, put a tight fitting cover on the snowmobile. Acover specifically designed for your snowmobile isbest. This will help keep foreign objects out of thecooling vents in the shroud, and also help protect thesnowmobile against damage from debris on the road.

� If transporting the snowmobile in an open trailer ortruck in areas where road salt is used, coat metalsuspension surfaces lightly with oil or other pro-tectant. This will help protect against corrosion. Besure to clean the snowmobile when you get to yourdestination to remove any corrosive salts.

Spark plug inspectionThe spark plug is an important engine component and iseasy to inspect. The condition of the spark plug can indi-cate the condition of the engine. Check the coloration onthe white porcelain insulator around the center electrode.The ideal coloration at this point is a medium to a lighttan color for a snowmobile that is being ridden normally.If a spark plug shows a distinctly different color, therecould be something wrong with the engine. For example,a very white center electrode porcelain color could indi-cate an intake track air leak or carburetion problem forthat cylinder. Do not attempt to diagnose such problemsyourself. Instead, take the snowmobile to a Yamahadealer for inspection and possible repairs. You shouldperiodically remove and inspect the spark plug becauseheat and deposits will cause a spark plug to slowly breakdown and erode. Consult a Yamaha dealer before chang-ing to a different type of spark plug.

Spark plugs are produced in several different threadlengths. The thread length or reach is the distance fromthe spark plug gasket seat to the end of the threadedportion. If the reach is too long, overheating and enginedamage may result. If the reach is too short, spark plugfouling and poor performance may result. Also, if thereach is too short, carbon will form on the exposedthreads resulting in combustion chamber hot spots andthread damage. Always use a spark plug with the speci-fied reach.

Before installing any spark plug, measure the electrode gapwith a wire thickness gauge and adjust to specification.

When installing the spark plug, always clean the gasketsurface. Wipe off any grime from the threads and tightenthe spark plug to the specified torque.

High altitude adjustmentsOperating at high altitude reduces the performance of agasoline engine to about 3% for every 305 m (1,000 ft) ofelevation. This is because there is less air as altitudeincreases. Less air means less oxygen available for com-bustion.Your snowmobile can be adjusted to overcome most ofthe problems found in high altitude riding. Carburetoradjustments are the most important. Less air at high alti-tude makes the air/fuel ratio too rich, which can causepoor performance. Common problems are hard starting,bogging, and plug fouling. Follow the Main Jet Settingchart which is available at a Yamaha dealer carefully.Proper carburetion adjustments will correct the air/fuelratio.

Remember: less air at higher altitude means there isless horsepower available, even with proper carburetion.Expect acceleration and top speed to be reduced athigher altitudes.

To overcome operating with less power at high altitudes,your snowmobile may also require different settings forthe drive chain gears and V-belt clutch to avoid poor per-formance and rapid wear. If you plan to operate yoursnowmobile at an altitude different from the area whereyou bought it, be sure to consult a Yamaha dealer. Theycan tell you if there are any changes necessary for thealtitude where you plan to ride.

10-STORAGELong term storage requires some preven-tive procedures to guard against deteriora-tion.

1. CleaningThoroughly clean the snowmobile, insideand out, to remove the corrosive salts andacids that can accumulate. Use YamahaMud and Grease Release, or an equivalentproduct, to loosen mud, grease, and grime.Wash with mild soap, then rinse and drycompletely.

2. LubricationLubricate moving parts, suspension link-age, and pivot points. Use the grease orlubricant specified in the MAINTENANCEsection, or Yamaha Lube-Zall general pur-pose lubricant. Proper lubrication fightscorrosion while it reduces friction.

3. Fuel system preparationAdd Yamaha Fuel Conditioner/Stabilizer, oran equivalent, to the fuel tank to help pre-vent fuel oxidation, gum and varnishdeposits, and to inhibit corrosion in the fuelsystem and carburetor. In areas whereoxygenated fuel (gasohol) is used, com-pletely drain the fuel system. Ask aYamaha dealer if further information isneeded.

4. EngineProper storage of the engine is essential toprevent costly rust and corrosion damageto internal engine components. This ismore important in areas where oxygenatedfuel (gasohol) is used, because the alcoholcontent in the fuel increases the chance forwater to enter the engine. Use YamahaStor-Rite Fogging Oil, or an equivalent fog-

ging oil, to protect both the combustionchamber and crankshaft from corrosion.An alternate method is to remove the car-buretor silencer and squirt oil into the car-buretor throats while the engine is running.

Do not attempt to store the snowmobileby simply starting the engine occasion-ally during the storage period. This cancause more harm than good! Moistureand acids form during combustionwhich can actually increase the chancefor corrosion damage during the stor-age period. @

5. Protection Apply a coat of wax, such as Yamaha Sili-cone Wax, to painted surfaces. SprayYamaha Silicone Spray, or an equivalentprotectant, on the exterior of the engine, onthe drive track, and on other metal, plastic,and rubber parts.

6. Drive track Loosen the drive track, and block up thechassis so that the drive track is sus-pended above the ground.

7. V-belt Remove the V-belt and store separately.

8. Storage Store the snowmobile in a dry, well-venti-lated place out of direct sunlight. Put a fab-ric cover over the snowmobile, preferablyone that is designed for it. Do not use aplastic or vinyl cover — condensationcould be trapped underneath which couldincrease the chances of rusting.

Returning to service after storage

When returning your snowmobile to ser-vice, reinstall the V-belt and adjust thedrive track. Remove the spark plugs andclean them or replace them. Perform allother pre-operation and seasonal mainte-nance checks listed in the periodic mainte-nance chart.

For peak performance, it is recommendedthat you have your snowmobile checkedand tuned by a Yamaha dealer. They havethe experience and training to help you getthe maximum performance and use of yourYamaha snowmobile.
