Park to host U.S. Sprint Boat Association series points race and national finals championship race this summer. Here are a few tips for spectators.

Watching a sprint boat race can be exhilarating. This year the Extreme Sports Park will host two

U.S. Sprint Boat Association races — a series point race on Saturday, Aug. 11, and the national finals championship on Saturday, Sept. 8.

As you turn into the Extreme Sports Park, located at 2917 W. Edgewood Drive in Port Angeles, you will see the main entrance gates and parking attendants directing you.

Parking is plentiful and free of charge. At the entrance gates, you can purchase tickets and

get your arm stamped, which will provide you access to the day’s races.

“We are using entrance stamps rather than wrist-bands so the lines move faster to get people into the races quickly,” says Kelie Morrison, one of four owners of Extreme Sports Park.

General admission tickets cost $20, which includes admission and access to the pits where the drivers, navigators and boats are located. Admission for youth 12 and younger is $10. Children 6 and younger enter for free.

Sprint boat racing is a timed race through a maze of channels that are three feet deep.

The night before the race at the Show & Shine Tech Event (held at Price Ford Lincoln, see Page 13), the rotation through the channels is released to the race teams.

For the Aug. 11 series points race and the Sept. 8 national finals cham-pionships in Port Angeles, there are three possible rotations, which are found on Page 9.

By waiting until the evening before to announce which rotation they will use, teams are prevented from having an unfair advantage.

DNF, DNQ & DNSAll sprint boats have four chances to

qualify for the elimination race in the afternoon.

Each boat has a strict requirement to be in line and get in the water on time.

If there is trouble for some reason, they are put on a 5-minute clock. If they can’t resolve the problem in 5 minutes, they get a DNS or Did Not Start.

All the boats will be running the same rotation through the track.

If a boat misses a turn or doesn’t com-plete the course in the designated path, it gets a DNF or Did Not Finish.

If a boat comes out of the water, as soon as the safety crew touches the boat, it also gets a DNF.

If the boat is only out of the water a little bit, you may see the driver wave off the safety crew at first so the driver and navigator can attempt to shimmy and shake the boat back into the water.

After four tries, if a boat does not complete the course in the right rota-tion, it gets a DNQ or Did Not Qualify.

After the qualification runs, the boats with the top eight times in each class move on to eliminations.

The eight boats take their first elimi-nation run.

The fastest four boats to complete the rotation accurately move on.

The four run a second time, and the slowest two are cut.

Finally, the last two boats run a third and final time to determine first and second place.

Boat classesThere are three classes of boats, mainly deter-

mined by engine size. The first class of boats is the Super Modified class.

The Super Mods are boats with engines up to 367 cubic inches (cid).

The middle group is the A-400 class with engines from 368 to 412 cid.

The fastest boats are the Super Boats (also called the Unlimiteds class) with engines from 350 cid to 419 cid that are mechanically fuel-injected or multi- carbureted, running on methanol.

Super boats with engines 420 cid and higher have no restrictions.

These are just the very basics of the sprint boat classes.

To see all the specific class factors like fuel, induc-tion and heads, visit the U.S. Sprint Boat Association website at www.ussbaracing.com.

SafetyThe main focus of the race rules is safety. The safety of the drivers starts with their gear. All drivers are in a full fire suit with neck restraint

and helmet. Then they are strapped into the boat with a 5-point

harness and a strap to restrain their outside arm. This setup has prevented many drivers and navi-

gators from receiving injuries when their boats roll while missing a turn.

There is also a safety crew inside the track posi-tioned along the sides and on the islands. They are there to push the boats back in the water when they get beached.

You can see the crew run fast if a boat lands upside down.

RACING TO THE FINISHClallam County is home to three sprint boat teams whose drivers and navigators are recognized names in the racing circuit

By day, you can find sprint boat drivers, navigators and crew members working behind the counter at a North Olympic Peninsula hardware store, building houses, teaching second-grade students or farming.

On certain weekends you will find these same folks participating in one of the nation’s fastest growing and muddiest extreme sports — sprint boat racing.

Three teams from Clallam County have made names for themselves by clinching a number of regional and national titles in the sport.

The teams say they are thrilled to race on their home turf this summer at the Extreme Sports Park, 2917 W. Edgewood Drive in Port Angeles.

As one of only two tracks in the state, Extreme Sports Park made its debut last September when it

hosted the U.S. Sprint Boat Association Finals. More than 5,000 people attended the 2011 event,

which exceeded organizers’ attendance predictions. A series point race will be held Saturday, Aug. 11,

and the association’s national finals championship will be held at the park on Saturday, Sept. 8.

“We are just thrilled to host two sprint boat races, including the national finals championship, at our track,” says Kelie Morrison, one of the owners of Extreme Sports Park.

“We were thrilled with how many people turned out for the race last year and promise to make this year’s races bigger and better for our participants and fans of the sport.”

Kelie’s husband, Dan Morrison, drives Wicked

Racing’s No. 10 alongside their daughter, Cara McGuire of Port Angeles. The father-daughter team won the 2011 championship in the Super Boats class.

“Sprint boat racing is a very family-oriented sport, both on and off the track” Kelie says.

“You will find parents and children racing along-side cousins and in-laws. It is a wonderful sport for families to watch and the Extreme Sports Park really caters to providing fun for the entire family.”

TNT Racing’s Dillon Brown Cummings and Teri Cummings of Sequim were the 2010 national cham-pions in the Super Modified Class.

Twisted Motorsports, a relative newcomer, is making ground and racking up the points with each twist and turn of the track.

Page 8: Sprint Boat 2012

Twisted Motorsports driver Wayne Brown of Port Angeles once raced stock cars in Port Angeles and dragsters in Forks and Bremerton, but finds sprint boat racing to be intense and addictive.

All of the teams say seeing a race in person is what hooked them on the sport.

Tim Cummings of TNT Racing and Dan traveled to Woodland, Wash., to view a sprint boat race in 2006.

The men raced quads and jet skis, and say it only took an hour for them to start wondering how much a boat would cost. By 2007, both men had purchased a boat and were starting to learn the sport.

Twisted driver Wayne Brown took in his first race in 2010 in St. John, Wash.

Today, his daughter, Nicole Brown, acts as his navigator, and various other family members serve as crew and support staff during races.

Family involvement is also a theme with TNT Rac-ing. Tim’s son, Dillon, competes in the Super Modified Class, while Tim’s wife and Dillon’s stepmother, Teri,

Racing to the finish<<< continued from Page 7

serves as the navigator. Another TNT Racing boat Live Wire consists of

driver Paul Gahr Jr., — who is a brother-in-law to Tim and Teri — and his navigator son, Josh Gahr. This year, Paul’s daughter and Josh’s sister, Taylor, will join the crew as a navigator.

Paul and Josh won the A-400 national finals cham-pionship last year and promise Taylor, a Sequim High School student, will help add trophies to the family’s growing collection.

After years of traveling to Eastern Washington and Oregon for races, the Morrisons started thinking about building a track closer to home.

Construction on what would become Extreme Sports Park began in October 2010, with many busi-nesses and people in the community offering their support to get the track up and running.

“We are overwhelmed at the amount of support we have received from the community,” Kelie says.

“Local residents and businesses have just been outstanding. We could not have done this without their support.”

The Track

Sprint boat tracks are man-made courses approximately 14 feet wide that hold 3 to 4 feet of water.

A boat comprised of a driver and a navigator has to race against the clock as they maneuver through the watery course built around a maze of islands.

The Port Angeles track is designed to be the fastest in the sprint boat circuit, allowing speeds up to 100 miles per hour in some spots.

Other Northwest tracks are located in St. John, Wash., and Albany, Ore.

While there is only one track, there are different course routes. The driver and navigator are given a map the night before the race, which shows the route they have to take.

They have to memorize the course, which they’ll be traveling through at 90 miles per hour.

They do not get to practice before the qualifica-tion runs.

The driver must rely on the navigator, who com-municates directions through hand signals.

Mere seconds and accuracy count!

Track Rotations

As the boats make their way through the course, follow along with this layout of the track.

Pretty soon you’ll know when they’ve missed a turn as it happens, or which spots have been troublesome for the teams!

The free Sprint Boat Show & Shine and Tech Event will be held between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. at Price Ford Lincoln, 3311 E. U.S. Highway 101, on Friday, Aug. 10.
