Letter from the Editor

It’s been so windy recently, I feel like I’ve been totally windswept these last few weeks. I must admit I’m looking forward to nicer weather which should be on the horizon; I really hope so, especially for Easter.

Although Easter might seem a long way off still (19th-22nd April) now’s the time to plan what you are doing with the family. There are lots of things happening throughout April – some of which are featured here, within these pages, whilst others are featured on our Calendar of Events at www.hiyabucks.com. Please take the time to have a browse so you don’t miss out.

Thanks to Matt and Katie we have several reviews for you to read this month. I can’t possibly be everywhere at once (although I do try) so it’s great to have the support from these two talented journalists. Once again, please visit our website to have a read as there are so many more articles featured; I just don’t have the space for them all in the magazines.

JC Farm are opening their doors once again for us over the Easter weekend with lots of activities for your little (and big) ones. Plus, we have all our favourites re-opening for the 2019 season including Bekonscot Model Village, Chiltern Open Air Museum, National Trust houses, Chenies Manor (I’ve yet to visit but I will definitely go this year) and, of course, the Great Missenden Food Festival.

Add in Odds Farm, local theatres and the artisan food and craft markets and our dairies are full to the brim.

There’s something for everyone to enjoy this month so fingers crossed for sunshine and have fun with your friends and family.

The Gardening ClubHoltspur Primary School

The sun has shown it’s face and the frogs in our wildlife pond have taken full advantage.

I have never seen so much frogspawn! Obviously they will not all make it to fully grown frogs but it does show how healthy our pond must be.

My gardening frogs have also been busy. We have been sowing LOTS of seeds: Sweet Peas, Tomatoes and Peppers to name but a few. The greenhouse is filling up with little trays and we’re just waiting for those first shoots to appear.

Let’s hope the weather is kind to us and the frogs.

JC Farming Ltd, a local farming company in Little Kingshill, have been nominated for a Countryside Alliance Award. I caught up with the owner, James to discuss the nomination, modern farming and education.

‘Bringing farming to your door,’ reads the description on the JC Farming website, an apt tagline considering where James and his partner, Chenice’s values lie. JC Farming Ltd opened their doors in 2017 and, since then, have gone on to become a pillar of the community around them. Offering fun-filled, family days out with VIP lambing, Easter on the Farm, the JC Country show, a Maize Maze and Pumpkin Carving, James and Chenice have created an ideal environment for parents and children to really engage with the local countryside. With such a range of activities, it’s no wonder their work is being recognised in their nomination as a regional finalist in the ‘Rural Enterprise’ category of the Countryside Alliance Awards.

“It was more of a shock for us,” James tells me modestly as I catch him in a rare break from his hard work out on the farm, “a friend of mine nominated us for it. We were both really really chuffed.”

However, it is the underlying focus on education that James seems most proud of, and which is greatly responsible for the success in the ‘Rural Oscars’, as they’re colloquially known. “Where the rural Oscar comes into it is that, when we opened the farm, it was all about education and how we educate kids and local schools about farming,” James explains to me, “I’m all for the idea of ‘let’s get [farming] as a GCSE selection’. We’re eating three times a day, seven days a week, and we know more about Pythagoras’ theorem than the food we eat!”

It’s seems to be the combination of the family-oriented fun alongside the education that’s dictating these successes and getting James and Chenice some well overdue credit for their hard, passionate work. “The main reason to do it was the educational side… it’s all about farming and educating people,” he muses, “the idea of a farm is to get their hands on…we want to make sure the kids get the full experience of a farm [but] If a kid comes away with one little nice fact about farming, we’ve done our job.”

Watch out for upcoming events at JC Farm on their website https://www.jcfarming.co.uk/, and check out their progress in the Countryside Alliance Awards here: https://www.countryside-alliance.org/

A CHAMPION FOR THE CHILTERNS by Matt Batsman

Dan Bailey is making waves in his local catering business, but it isn’t all about making a personal fortune.

Local chef Dan Bailey has had an impressive career rise in the last 7 years since leaving his IT consultancy position in 2012 to pursue his culinary ambitions. From taking a pivitol job as a Commis Chef at The Gatsby in Berkhamsted, to becoming the Head Chef at The Full Moon pub in Little Kingshill, he continued to perfect his skills and experience. Dan has rapidly climbed to the top of his profession, and there’s no stopping him!

Now the owner of Dan Bailey Catering Ltd, his own bespoke, fine-dining, catering business, Dan has a simple goal: to get together with local farmers and producers, prove that you don’t need to be going to Michelin star restaurants to be eating incredible food made from fresh, local produce and to be a champion for food in the Chilterns.

“My passion has become my success” Dan tells me as he finds a spare few minutes in his packed schedule to speak to me. “I didn’t attend catering college, I am self-taught, and have learned from some incredible local talented mentors since jumping headfirst into becoming a chef, and I have to stay 100% self-motivated…my desire in life is just to get up and cook.”

This enthusiastic approach to cooking has served Dan very well, seeing him rise through the ranks very quickly indeed. However, Dan is eager to point out that this his dream isn’t to be another celebrity chef with his name on a brand; this is bigger than him.

“I’m trying to connect people. I’m here for the Chilterns and I’m here for local producers. If you grow something, squeeze something, squash something, press something, I want to know who you are and see if we can work together.” Dan’s passion for his local area is infectious and impressive, as is his intelligent and highly commendable approach to his business.

“I’m passionate about where I live,” he says excitedly, “and I believe there’s a market for what I do by becoming a partnering voice for farmers and producers in the Chilterns. I want them to know that I’m here and I want to support these suppliers as I deliver the very best in culinary experiences for clients in their own homes. Local produce of highest quality with excellent cooking direct to clients, their friends and their families. That’s what Dan Bailey Catering Limited is all about”.

Tonia Warren, Director of Beaconsfield based boutique property developers EAB Homes, talks to us about how her Cavapoo Honey keeps not just her family, but the whole office smiling.

Honey is beautiful, how old is she?

Honey joined the family in March 2018 and turned 1 in January. Honey has such a beautiful temperament, but we have to watch out for the mad doodle-dash every now and then!

What is the best part of being a dog owner with a young family?

Honey really links the family as a unit. We spend more time out in the fresh air than before and our boys (Harry 7 and Myles 5) both have an amazing ‘confidant’ relationship with her. I find Honey’s companionship a great stress relief.

You’re able to take Honey to work with you – how do your staff like having an office mascot?

We chatted with our staff members before we started bringing Honey to the office – luckily they were all dog lovers! There is so much research on how dogs aid an array of mental health issues, increase motivation, reduce stress, provide companionship and value and I’ve really seen this within the office. Small things like walking to the post box with Honey and taking 5 minutes out after a difficult call to throw a ball for her all help to make the working day that little bit brighter. Our business contacts also love having Honey to fuss over; she’s a great conversation starter.

Did you find there were challenges of being a first time dog owner?

The biggest challenge was that I had no idea where in Beaconsfield I could or couldn’t take her! I decided to walk the town and make a list so for any other dog owners, here’s where you can take your on-lead, well behaved and tidy dogs in Beaconsfield:

Buckinghamshire Mind, the mental health charity, is offering Adult Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) two-day training, accredited by MHFA England, that qualities delegates as a Mental Health First Aider.

As an expert mental health partner, Buckinghamshire Mind specialises in delivering professional training courses to support people to live well in their communities and thrive at work. Now, the charity is calling on local businesses to manage the mental health of their employees by booking places on the charity’s MHFA training courses in Aylesbury.

Andrea McCubbin, Chief Executive of Buckinghamshire Mind, says:

“We know that 1 in 4 people in the UK will experience a mental health problem each year. The biggest cause of sickness absence in the UK is stress, anxiety and depression, with mental ill-health costing employers £34.9 billion each year. Improving the management of mental health in the workplace will allow employers to save 30% or more of these costs. The Buckinghamshire Mind MHFA course will empower delegates to identify, reach out to and help someone within their organisation who may be experiencing a mental health issue.”

The MHFA course will be able to build employees’ confidence around mental health, stop preventable issues, encourage a faster recovery from long-term mental health problems and promote a mentally healthy working environment.

Mental Health First Aiders have:

• An in depth understanding of mental health and the factors that can affect wellbeing

• Practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues

• Confidence to step in, reassure and support a person in distress

• Enhanced interpersonal skills, such as non-judgemental listening

• Knowledge to help someone recover their health by guiding them to further support - whether that’s self-help resources, through their employer, the NHS, or a mix

The courses, which cost £300 per person, are being held on 25th-26th April and 16th-17th May at the Healthy Living Centre in Aylesbury. Further dates and locations are to be scheduled. Discounted rates are available for bookings of 12 or more people. No prior knowledge of mental health is necessary.

What is Message in a Bottle? It is simply a plastic bottle containing paperwork about you and your health requirements and should be kept in the fridge at all times.

Why should I have one? This bottle will contain important information about your health or that of the person you are caring for. Once completed, it will give details of your doctor’s name, the medication you are taking and any allergies you might have. Anything that tells the emergency services instantly about a person’s health. Paramedics and other staff have been trained to look in the fridge for these bottles to assist them with their care of you and this in turn will help to ensure that you receive the most appropriate treatment following any accidents in your home.To obtain a FREE bottle contact High Wycombe Lions Club by email: [email protected] or phone Doug or Pam on 01628 521405Charity no. 1166839

Migraines and MeI was eleven when I got my first migraine. This is my story

about migraines and me.

I recently read that people believe migraine sufferers commonly suffer with tinnitus (ringing in the ears). Studies have shown that you are at more risk of suffering with tinnitus if you suffer with migraines or regular headaches. Since a member of my family suffers with tinnitus and migraines (fortunately only the aura of the migraine), I am also beginning to believe this.

I understand that the most common reasons for tinnitus to occur are loud noises, for example with musicians it’s quite common, or a head injury, but I do think it makes sense that several severe headaches could cause a sharp ringing in the ears.

It’s scary to think that around 10% of the population suffer from tinnitus, but at least

it’s likely that we can talk to someone who is going through the same thing as us, right? Being a migraine sufferer and not having anyone to talk to about it is tough, because people don’t understand what you’re talking about. They also under estimate how bad a migraine headache can be and how scary it is to suffer from an aura! I’ve worked as a supervisor in a previous job where

someone has used a migraine as an excuse for not coming into work when they don’t even suffer with migraines! That really hurts because then people like us who suffer aren’t taken seriously. It’s said that during the time of having a migraine, whether it be before the migraine occurs, during, or a few days after, the tinnitus gets worse. As the migraine goes the tinnitus is slightly easier to live with.Along with tinnitus and migraines other symptoms can occur, including: depression, anxiety, sleep disturbances and increased stress levels. I mean, can you blame a person suffering with a headache/migraine and tinnitus at once saying they’re stressed?!There is so much more I could say so please email me if you’d like to discuss further or have a look online as I find reading about the connections really interesting.

STOP CANCER BEFORE IT STARTS book a cervical screening

Too many women in Buckinghamshire are missing their cervical cancer screening – and risk their lives by being diagnosed with the disease too late.

Cervical cancer is the most common cancer in women under 35, but it is very preventable. Cervical screening can stop cancer before it starts.

NHS Buckinghamshire Clinical Commissioning Group is joining the nationwide Public Health England campaign this month, to encourage women not to ignore their cervical screening invite letter. If you have missed your last screening, please book an appointment with your GP practice now.

Every day seven women in the UK are diagnosed with cervical cancer and two will lose their lives to the disease.

Uptake of cervical screening has fallen across all ages over recent years, putting more women at risk. In particular, women aged 25-34 are least likely to attend their screening of any age group.

Cancer charity surveys suggest embarrassment and a lack of understanding of the causes of cervical cancer may be behind these falling numbers.

Dr Raj Thakkar, Clinical Commissioning Director for Planned Care, said: “Too many women are missing out on their cervical screening test, particularly women aged 25 – 34. Unfortunately, this puts some of them at

a needless risk of developing cervical cancer. Having this quick, simple test is essential – it could save your life and help us stop cancer before it starts.

“The early warning signs of cervical cancer are very hard to detect yourself, so it is vital that women don’t wait until they notice symptoms before booking their screening. The test is usually carried out by a practice nurse. It is quick, simple and really is nothing to worry about. The test comes back normal 95% of the time and most abnormal cases can be treated easily and will never develop into cancer if they are picked up in time.”

If you have received an invitation for screening, have missed your smear or are due to be screened, please get in touch with your GP surgery to arrange an appointment - it may well save your life.

For more information about cervical cancer screening, visit NHS Choices (www.nhs.uk) or the Jo’s Cervical Cancer Trust charity (www.jostrust.org.uk)

Thousands of Bucks residents to benefit from new Scannappeal MRI fundraising

The Bucks MRI Appeal officially launched in March 2019 with an ambitious target of £1.5million. The new appeal will see two world class MRI scanners sited in Wycombe and Stoke Mandeville hospitals by 2020, making them the first in the UK to have scanners of this kind.

With 22,000 MRI scans carried out at Wycombe and Stoke Mandeville hospitals last year, and demand growing by an estimated 13% annually, the launch of this appeal will future proof services for Bucks by increasing scanning capacity and capabilities across a wide range of medical investigation needs.

Andrew Wainwright, Head of Imaging/Chief Radiographer for Bucks Healthcare NHS Trust commented, “Latest MRI techniques for cancer, stroke, heart, spine and many other conditions will improve diagnosis and reduce the need for invasive procedures. Scannappeal support will help us deliver the best possible care for patients in Bucks.”

Thanks to the commitment made by Scannappeal the new MRI for High Wycombe is due to be installed by the end of the year. The project at Stoke Mandeville

will commence in 2020. Scannappeal Chairman, William Baxter CBE shared his pride in the new appeal “Scannappeal have been proudly supporting and working with communities across Buckinghamshire since 1987 and this is the biggest appeal that we have run in our history.”

H A P P Y H E A R T S First Aid Tips By Sammy Davies

I thought this month would be a great opportunity to remind you that certain chocolate eggs, like some foods, do pose a choking risk to children (and adults). Over the last couple of years the delicious Mini Egg has been in the spotlight. If you look at the packet, there is actually a warning that the product is not suitable for children under four years old. It is the size and the texture of the coating that increase the risk, but of course we must be mindful that all solid small eggs are also a choking hazard.

So, would you know how to respond if someone was choking? The casualty will be silent and turning blue. Encourage them to

cough, if they are able, but failing that you will need to intervene. Deliver up to 5 back blows between the shoulder blades to try to remove the obstruction, using the heal of your hand. The back blows need to be relatively firm to be successful. After each back blow, check to see if the obstruction has been cleared before performing the next one.

If this has not been successful, now is the time to deliver up to 5 abdominal thrusts. This involves coming behind the child or adult with them leaning forward and making a fist between their navel and bottom of their ribs, supported by your other hand. You will then squeeze upwards and inwards to force the

obstruction out. After each abdominal thrust, check to see if the obstruction has been cleared before performing the next one.

If the obstruction has not been cleared, ask someone to call 999 and repeat the back blows and abdominal thrusts. If they become unresponsive at any stage, commence CPR. St John Ambulance has some great resources on choking management, and please note that the treatment does vary for a baby under one year old.

Bucks Tree Club celebrated Dendro DayAfter last year, when the Beast from the East delayed Dendro Day’s planting of the rare tree in memory of one of its founder members three times, the Bucks Tree Club agreed to choose from three trees already planted this winter at Little Friars Arboretum for Dendro Day (always the first Sunday in March) whilst focussing on tree care problems in the spirit of the day which are:

Do any late planting, if ground not frosty or waterlogged

Examine tree ties, loosen or remove as necessary

Note tree work you cannot complete today to finish later

Damaged branches after winter weather, should be pruned

Remedy any loosening of soil around all new tree planting

Organise your calendar to enjoy, care and learn about trees

As Storm Freya was forecast to arrive it was thought best to hold the whole event indoors. Members saw a homemade deer deterrent, although there is electric fencing and also a rabbit proof fence; there are always some intrusions into the Christmas tree field cum Arboretum at Little Friars. The recent arrival of polecats and ferreting on the neighbouring property has had the effect that no rabbits have been recently recorded on the wild life camera.

Learning from those who should know better (never prune acers, birches or members of the walnut family in late winter/early spring) when busy pruning, it was all too easy to forget! This happened to the Acer cappadocicum ‘Aureum’. As it began ‘bleeding profusely’ little could be done but an impromptu collection system was set up to collect sap and bottled it to be later boiled down to produce a small – a very small - amount of maple syrup! However, this is not to be recommended! When maple syrup is collected in New England or Canada

the sugar maples are not tapped with a ‘Spile’ until the tree is 12 inches in diameter, so far better not to prune maples until the late summer or early winter!

Three trees - all from different continents that were planted this winter, made an exciting choice for the members who braved the weather to select one for Dendro Day. They were unanimously charmed by a tree that grows on the wind blasted shores of Patagonia but cannot decide if it can grow straight in our much kinder English climate! On the label from the nursery it was described as ‘growing whimsically’ so members chose Nothofagus antarctica with its twisted branches but attractive bark and in the spring the foliage should be sweetly scented.

Quite a few trees are already in flower on Dendro Day so tree enthusiasts, like members of the Bucks Tree Club, have prepared an outline of their visits to places with fascinating trees from now until Autumn gives its glorious finale.

Lauren Shields, owner of Fill Food says "Fill was created in response to the problem of single use plastic. As a busy Mum, I found myself increasingly aware of my plastic consumption and more and more concerned about the legacy I was creating for my children. After the birth of my two sons I was amazed at how many nappies we went through and how the amount of rubbish in my wheelie bins increased!”

"Did you know it can take 200 to 500 years for a disposable nappy to decompose? Alongside trying (and failing!) to use washable nappies I began looking at other areas where we could live more sustainably and, specifically, reduce our plastic consumption.”

Wayne and Sarah, along with their little helper (son James aged 2 ½), had a desire to learn everything about coffee; which soon turned into a passion. They have spent most of James’ life setting up Roast Lab Coffee Roasters and hope to pass on their legacy to him one day. They are committed and passionate about doing it right! From sourcing the best quality green beans to methodical roasting techniques, they're committed to providing you with the best possible coffee tasting experience when drinking their precision roasted

coffees. Precision roasting? Their 'NovoRoaster' is the reason they are called Roast Lab Coffee Roasters. They told us “The 'NovoRoaster' is a 'fluid-bed' or 'hot-air' roaster. This type of roasting produces a very 'clean' bean as opposed to drum roasting which is very smoky due to the oils released during each roast continually burning on the drum. We believe 'fluid-bed' roasting to be a healthier roasting method. We can also boast near zero carbon emissions due to the afterburner we installed”. A maximum of 2kg of speciality green coffee beans can be roasted per batch meaning a guarantee of consistent inner-bean development and better quality control. Roast profiles are developed for each 'origin' based on density, altitude, moisture content and varietal characteristics. The roast profiles are programmed for repeatable batch roasting that is precise and consistent, batch after batch. Sarah said “As roasters, we need to have certainty that our roasted beans are not over-developed or under-developed which would cause undesirable flavours and aromas. We use a roast colour meter, so we can be assured that our desired roast degree (Light, Medium or Full City) has been achieved. As part of our testing regime, we measure extraction with a coffee refractometer which helps to get the balance right between water temperature, grind size and the ratio of coffee to water. We are able to help our clients to get the best extraction from their coffee equipment”.For most people coffee is a daily ritual; be it first thing in the morning or as a break from daily routines. The next time you have a cup of coffee, take an extra moment to concentrate on the taste and then appreciate the people whose hands and passion produced the cup you're enjoying.

Helen Gerrish, Editor

So …. on a brief sunny

morning during a spell

of rotten weather (Storm

Freya) I took myself off

for a quick local walk to

Wooburn Park. It really

is a beautiful large open

space. At one end we

have the 1,000 year

old St. Paul’s church in

quaint Wooburn Town

(the smallest town

ever I expect!) and the

other end the historical

Wooburn Narkovian’s

Cricket Club which has

played cricket here since

1936. There’s a book

about the WNCC by

Karen Savage and copies

are still available if you

would like one. It’s a

really good read and, if

you look carefully, you’ll

find a photo of me in it!

For drivers to Wooburn

there is a large free

car park located at the

bottom of Wash Hill.

From here you can walk

up through the field to

the woods and eventually

come out at Berghers

Hill which is a hamlet

of pretty little cottages.

Keeping left you can

follow the footpath

beside The Chase which

brings you to the top of

Windsor Hill. Cross the

road and you’ll find an

abundance of footpaths

through the woods

bringing you back down

to Wooburn Green. From

the edge of the woods

there are amazing views

to be had of the valley.

Alternatively from

Wooburn Park you

can walk along the

old railway line behind

Spadeoak to Bourne End

– it’s a lovely walk we

find ourselves doing in

the summer, ending up at

The Bounty pub beside

the river in Bourne End.

There are plenty of

choices for refreshment

in and around Wooburn

and at the time of writing

I await with bated breath

to find out what The Red

Lion in Wooburn Green is

turning into.

I feel very lucky that

I have such beautiful

countryside on my

doorstep. If only I could

do something about the

traffic …….

Now I know a lot of you will be very familiar with Wooburn (especially those of you who live here) but I wonder how many of you realise just how lucky we are to have such a beautiful open space on our doorsteps.

Who deals with the estate? If the deceased has left a Will, the Will should name the individuals (otherwise known as executors) who will look after the administration of the estate. The executor will be required to confirm the assets and liabilities of the estate and, if necessary, apply for a Grant of Representation to administer the estate.

Do I need to apply for a Grant? A Grant of Representation is the official documentation required to confirm your authority as the Personal Representative of the deceased. You need to obtain a Grant of Representation in order to obtain authority to deal with the deceased’s assets i.e. selling the Deceased’s property or shares. The type of Grant required will depend on whether there is a Will or not. However, if the assets are passing to a surviving spouse or civil partner or the funds held in the deceased’s estate is less than £5,000, then a Grant of Representation if not usually required.

What if there is no Will? The process is more complicated if the deceased does not leave a Will. If there is no Will, the law will determine who is allowed to act on your estate. The person who acts will be known as an administrator and will usually be a close relative. Like the executors of a Will the administrators will still require a Grant of Representation if the Deceased’s estate is over £5,000.

If I am appointed as an executor or administrator, what are my responsibilities? The role of the personal representative or administrator varies depending what the estate consists of. However, generally it

What is Probate?

involves identifying the deceased’s assets and liabilities, obtaining the date of death valuations, preparing the probate application, discharging the estate’s liabilities and paying the beneficiaries of the estate out of theresidue.

Do I have to worry about tax?As an executor or administrator, there are a number of tax implications that you must think about. Income Tax, Capital Gains Tax and Inheritance Tax are generally the three taxes that will impact an estate. You will also have to consider the various allowances and exemptions that are available. The word Probate is commonly used, however, there is much confusion as to what it actually means and what the process involves. Put simply Probate means ‘prove it’. It is the legal process of proving that a Will made by someone who has passed away is a valid document and reflects their last wishes for their estate.

If the allowances and exemptions are not properly used, it may prove costly to the estate. There are also penalties for the late filing of tax returns.

Like many people Anney Harris was introduced to Beatrix Potter’s stories as a small child. However, her real interest in Beatrix Potter began in 1975 when she was appointed the Mark Longman Librarian at the National Book League (now called The Book Trust), which also included the Linder Collection of original Beatrix Potter art and first editions.

During her five years at the NBL, Anney Harris set up displays of the original watercolours and drawings, and talked to visiting groups of students about Beatrix Potter.

In the Spring of 1980 the Beatrix Potter Society was launched and Anney was the first Secretary and has remained a member over the last 39 years. Having retired in 2018 Anney now has a little more time to give illustrated talks and help to spread awareness of Beatrix Potter’s remarkable life and the

wide range of her achievements as well as the many areas that her legacy still influences. Tickets £5

On Wednesday 17th April 2019 at 8pm we welcome Sarah Stockdale who will

describe the life and work of JANE AUSTENFor many people, mention Jane Austen and the mind defaults to Mr Darcy, Elizabeth Bennet and a polite world of balls and conversation. However, Miss Austen’s novels are firmly grounded in her personal experiences and these ranged between the luxurious comfort of her brother’s home at Godmersham Hall and the penury of being a dependant living in hired rooms.

The Real World of Jane Austen takes an affectionate and eclectic look at what the life of the middling classes was really like, by drawing on Jane Austen’s life and major novels which are more autobiographical than is commonly thought.

What were the fashions of the day? What was the reality of travel? Their diet and mealtimes? By answering these and other social questions Sarah hopes that a particularly interesting moment in history, when society was on the cusp of plunging into the consequences of industrialisation will come to life.

Let’s all do our bit …If you haven’t heard about the plastic pollution in the world you must be living in a cave. Whilst we can’t rid the world of the huge amount of plastic floating in our oceans, or filling up landfill, we can do our bit to reduce the amount of plastic we use.

I know some of you will be thinking… “oh no, not this again!” but some of you will be reading still and thinking ….”ok, what does she want us to do?”.

This past month I decided not to buy any more liquid handsoap. Living in a busy household we get through so much handsoap it’s ridiculous (but also good that everyone washes their hands so often). I’ve made it a mission to use only bars of soap from now on. It’s a small step, but if everyone took a small step then, collectively, we would be making a big step.

Can anyone help me source a bar of soap that isn’t wrapped in plastic (NOT the way forward)? I’ve been buying a rather expensive soap which is wrapped in paper (tick) but not great for the purse strings (untick). Also, I’m struggling to find a soap dish that isn’t a gimmick – there’s a market out there for good old-fashioned soap dishes (hint hint to our #shoplocal contributors)!

How can you help?

Well, let’s make this page OUR page, mine and yours. Please email me any tips and suggestions you have on reducing the amount of plastic we use, one step at a time. I have a few other tips up my sleeve for next month but I welcome your feedback and contributions.

Please take the time to email me at [email protected] with your thoughts; I can’t do this alone!

Thanks for reading.

At the time of writing Fair trade For tnight is coming to a close. These two weeks star ting at the end of February have been a calendar event for the last twenty years and are a celebration of the Fair trade movement promoting the scheme and the products produced under the Fair trade banner.

This year Waitrose And Par tners has pledged that all the cocoa it uses in own label confectionery products will be cer tified Fair trade by the end of the year. This means you can feel you’re making a difference when you eat chocolate (as if we need any more motivation!).

Currently all chocolate bars within the own label range are already Fair trade and this will extend to chocolate boxes, Christmas treats and Easter eggs.

Waitrose And Par tners confectionery buyer Elizabeth Sutcliffe said “as a business it’s the right thing for us to do to ensure we are sourcing our cocoa sustainably. Cocoa is different to other products as the beans come from lots of small family farms, so there isn’t just one farm or supplier”.

In 2016 there were 226,579 cocoa farmers registered to produce Fair trade cocoa. The cocoa is bought by large manufacturers who turn the beans into liquid chocolate, which is then bought by the confectionery companies Waitrose work with to produce their own label products.

Fair trade means there is a guaranteed minimum price and a premium is paid to the producer. This makes the producers business sustainable as they can invest in farms, send children to school and make improvements in their communities. Typically, a cocoa farmer in the Ivory Coast lives on 74p a

FA IR ENOUGH!

With Easter falling in April, most of us will be tucking into some chocolate this month. Chocolate is produced from cocoa beans grown in a narrow band across the equator, needing warm temperatures and plenty of rainfall. The farms which produce the cocoa beans are usually quite small-scale independent producers who need us to do the right thing; pay fairly for their product so we can continue to enjoy that melt in the mouth treat.

day. Fair trade has calculated that to achieve a living income this should be at least £1.86.

Ensuring a minimum price and paying a premium is vital to farmers who are at the mercy of the commodities market. In January 2018 cocoa was being traded at $1,322 per metric ton compared to $1,705 last month, with plenty of fluctuations in between. Waitrose And Par tners contributes around $3.3 million in Fair trade premiums and with 6 million people depending on farming cocoa for their livelihoods it’s vital to ensure their farms are sustainable.

Other products which come under the Fair trade logo include tea, coffee, wine, flowers and bananas. In 2007 Waitrose became the first UK retailer to sell only Fair trade bananas, so the move to Fair trade only confectionery is a logical step.

Although Fair trade For tnight is over you can buy the products all year round and, remember, when you are tucking into your Fair trade chocolate you’re making a difference to farmers in West Africa, enabling them to earn a sustainable living, so please do your bit!

(Makes 4 individual)

• 250g strong plain flour, plus extra for dusting

• 7g dried yeast

• 1 tsp salt

• 160ml warm water

• 2 tbsp olive oil, plus extra for greasing

• 1 tsp sea salt

• ½ tsp cocoa powder

Mix together the flour, yeast and salt in a large bowl. Evenly distribute almost all of the warm water and the olive oil over the mixture. Keep the remaining water aside. Use a cutlery knife to quickly mix the water into the flour mix, turning the bowl as you’re mixing to evenly distribute it. Pour a little of the remaining water over any dry crumbs. Mix again with the cutlery knife and use your hands to bring it together. Knead the bread dough on a lightly floured work surface for 5 minutes until it is soft and smooth in texture.Tear off a small ball of dough (about 20g) and knead it in the cocoa powder until the colour is even. Now, to make your bunnies, split your large piece of dough into four. Take each piece and roll and head and belly first. Then roll two small feet, ears and paws and slightly tuck underneath. I used the chocolate dough

Rachel’screative cooking

to accentuate the ears and paws but you can use it for anything you like – I’d love to see your creations! You might need to use a little oil to stick them on.Lightly oil a baking tray. Carefully place your bunnies onto the tray. Cover with a piece of lightly oiled Clingfilm and leave to rise for about one hour (the pieces will all stick together in that time). Preheat the oven to 200˚C. Check that the dough is ready to go into the oven by lightly pressing a side with your finger. If an indentation is left, the dough is proved and ready. Lightly brush your bunnies evenly with oil to give them a shine.Bake on the middle/top shelf of the oven for 25 minutes until they are golden and sound hollow when you tap the underneath. Transfer to a wire rack and cover with a tea towel to soften the crust. To characterise your bunnies melt 20g of dark chocolate and be creative!

Plants & Prosecco By Matt Batsman

The final Saturday of February saw The Front Room in High Wycombe host the Plants & Prosecco event, an innovative creation from Began’s Vegan Street Food, that saw us treated to drinks, dancing and, most important of all, a diverse range of delicious vegan treats.

If you’ve never come across the Began’s Vegan Street Food van before then you’re missing out. Serving up all sorts of vegan treats, Becky has been bringing great vegan food to High Wycombe’s high street since November 2016, serving up deliciously dirty vegan burgers to plant-based fanatics from all around Bucks. On the final Saturday in February, Becky brought her offerings into a new arena with her Plants & Prosecco event at The Front Room.

The Front Room was the perfect venue for the event; a relaxed, rustic atmosphere created by the untreated, wooden tables and shelves of books in all directions made for the ideal, edgy locale befitting the vibe. The till area usually reserved for coffee making had become a makeshift bar, serving a range of beers, wine and spirits (all vegan, of course) as well as some more unusual soft drinks.

We settled down onto a table with a drink, listening to Audio Venom playing some big dance anthems, and waited as Becky and her team brought out delight after delight. Menus on the table had already given us an idea of what was to come, but nothing could have prepared our taste buds for what we were served. Each canape was unique, adding a different range of flavours from the last. Everything was so good that it’s a real task to pick favourites, but our personal highlights included the Pocket Breakfast (a whole meal in a tiny pitta) the Seitan Sliders (the ‘meatiest’ vegan burger I’ve ever tasted) the Palate Cleanser (a well-balanced set of fruit that tasted as fresh as it sounds) the Crispy Cauliflower (like a sweet’n’sour chicken ball but better) and the Caramel & Biscotti Cheesecake (a dessert so unbelievably good that I managed to grab a second!)

It was a wonderful event that combined the joy of tipsy dancing with delicious, wholesome food. A massive thank you to Becky and her team for putting on such a great night!

Waddesdon Manor, Waddesdon, Bucks HP18 0JH

Located in the rolling hills of the Chilterns just outside Aylesbury, Waddesdon Manor is an old Rothschild manor house surrounded by a beautiful expanse of open countryside. You could almost imagine the horse-and-cart bumping up the mile-long driveway towards the car park as we moved through the green, rolling hills of the incredible landscape. After parking up we went straight to the ‘Welcome’ booth and were given our stickers for entry, along with a small but detailed leaflet containing some extra information and a map. The staff were friendly and very knowledgeable, recommending things to see once we had made our way up to the manor.

The house itself is around a 20-minute walk away from the car park, although there’s also a regularly running shuttle bus if you don’t fancy the hike. We opted to take the walk, preferring to take our time to see the estate itself and get some fresh air into our lungs. It’s quite a steep walk in places as the manor sits at the top of a hill and so, by the time we made it, I was elatedly puffing for air. Fortunately, I was about to discover that the views were well worth my breathlessness.

It’s a beautiful manor, even bigger than I had imagined, surrounded by trees and well-maintained topiary bushes. The view from the top is glorious, being able to see all the shades of colour in the estate for miles. We began the walk around the house, pausing at the front drive to admire it in all its grandeur. We continued round, stopping in at the aviary to see the remarkable range of protected birds still being looked after on the estate before returning to the gardens to admire some of the expertly-groomed topiary.

Our visit fell right in the middle of Waddesdon’s winter season so a few of the attractions were closed but, whilst this was no detriment to our visit, I can definitely see myself returning in the summer to see the whole manor bathed in sunlight and take in some more of those peaceful, countryside views. Whether you’re looking for a place to take the kids, or just looking for a much-needed communion with nature, Waddesdon Manor is the place to go.

By Matt Batsman

Waddesdon Manor is one of the most beautiful National Trust houses in Bucks. We headed over on a cool, quiet day in half-term to have a relaxing walk in the countryside and see the incredible architecture from yesteryear.

…and if you’ve made the journey out to Waddesdon, make sure you stop in at The Five Arrows Hotel, Bar and Restaurant for something to eat.

Located on the quaint high-street of Waddesdon, The Five Arrows is a Grade II listed Hotel and Restaurant by the gates of Waddesdon Manor, serving British classics with a twist. We dropped in for a well-earned meal after our walk through the hills of the estate, and where better to go and eat than the restaurant that was originally built as part of the Waddesdon estate itself?

Designed as a coaching inn to accommodate the architects and craftsman working on the manor itself, The Five Arrows was commissioned by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild, the name deriving from the Rothschild family emblem: a shield surmounted by five arrows. As a result, the interior has retained its classy décor, but without pushing into the realms of the posh; despite the classiness, we didn’t feel underdressed in our casual clothing. The staff were welcoming and knowledgeable about the menu, assisting in helping

with dietary requests. We had a quick browse of their extensive wine list (an impressively large collection) before we got into the main event of the food menu.

The Five Arrows features a varied and exciting menu featuring ingredients from local suppliers and seasonal vegetables from Eythrope, with everything from chickpea and slow roasted tomato salad all the way through to quince glazed duck breast. We opted for a butternut squash risotto, a seasonal special, and a kedgeree, finishing with a chocolate tart for dessert, all of which was fantastically flavoursome and prepared with the aesthetics in mind. Despite the complexity of the food, service was quick and attentive, and every effort was made to make sure we were comfortable and happy.

The prices fall into the upper-medium category but, with the relaxing atmosphere of the restaurant, the quality of the food and the wonderful views of the lovely little village outside, it’s more than reasonable. So, if you’re making the pilgrimage up to the manor, don’t forget to check in for a hearty meal at The Five Arrows first!

I soon arrived in the secluded Audley Chalfont Dene, which is home to the spa. Walking up to the double doors, a large floral arrangement inside and the grand chandelier hanging immediately above it caught my eye and a much-needed sense of calm rushed over me.

As I walked in, I was ushered into a larger room where women (and a few men) of all ages were sat, chatting and drinking prosecco, all gathered for the spa’s launch of Elemis Biotec facials. Sensing the atmosphere and smelling the aromatic candles that were dotted about the room, I knew I was set for a good evening of pampering.

Soon enough the demo began. Rebecca from The House of Elemis in Mayfair demonstrated explained these facials combine technology with more traditional methods to produce visible improvements to a wide range of skin issues. The biotech system uses five technologies, all within a single machine, which aims to increase cell energy for optimum skin function.

At your first appointment you will have a consultation to decide which of the seven

facials, ranging from anti-ageing, to skin resurfacing, and even one designed for men, will suit you best and which technologies will be most effective for you, meaning each client gets a truly personalised experience.

Being new to the world of facials, I must admit I was slightly dubious. However, after just a 20-minute demonstration I could clearly see results on the client. Backing this up, Elemis is keen to highlight its scientific approach to the facials, as well as its surveys, which found 100 percent of participants experienced visible results after treatment.

After the demo, the spa’s staff made the effort to come and speak to all guests and answer any of their individual questions, adding to the personalised feel of the treatments. Their excitement and passion for the treatments was arguably the facials’ greatest advert throughout the event.

With mini massages and facials on offer for the duration of the evening, you couldn’t help but relax and enjoy yourself. The stresses of a busy day were a thing of the past by the time I left.

I’ll be booking in for more treatments

Review of Bodhi Tree Spa by Katie Royals

Tired after a long day at work, the last thing I felt like doing on a cold, wet and windy Wednesday evening was getting in the car and driving to an event; but I’m so glad I did!

What is the Bags of Help scheme?Bags of help is Tesco’s local community grant scheme. Money raised from the sale of carrier bags is used to fund local projects that benefit the community. Working in conjunction with groundworks who manage the grants, we aim to help improve outdoor areas and community buildings, provide new equipment, training coaches/volunteers and enable the hosting of community events.

Hi, my name is Claire Dicker and I am Community Champion for Tesco Loudwater

in the Community

Watch this space next month for more information on community food connection.

Loudwaters' Tesco Claire

Tesco customers can nominate and support projects that matter to them.

Nominate a projectIf you are aware of a project that needs support let us know by filling in the online form enabling us to contact the people involved to discuss a grant application.

www.groundwork.org.uk/sites/tescocommunityscheme/pages/category/tesco-customers-tes2

Vote for local projectsThree community projects in each voting area will be voted on in Tesco stores with projects changing every other month.Stores within Loudwater’s voting area include:Loudwater superstore High Wycombe (Eden) superstore Wooburn Green Bourne End London Road Hatters Lane High Wycombe North Plomer Green Downley Sands New Road High Wycombe South Stokenchurch Express storesThat’s a whopping 10 expresses and 2 superstores covering a wide area and raising lots of awareness for each organisation’s project.

At the end of the voting period the project with the most amount of votes can receive a grant of up to £4000 with second place up to £2000 and third place up to £1000.

Which means every project being voted for is a WINNER.

You’ll receive a blue token when you do your shopping which you can use to make your choice using the voting units in store (one blue token per transaction). There is no minimum purchase required and no carrier bag purchase needed.

42 projects voted on in the Loudwater store have received over £142,000 since 2016.

2968 projects in the South East have received over £9.7 million since 2016.

To apply visit www.tesco.com/bagsofhelpSo, remember to get your blue token at the checkout and ‘Make your vote count’

The cost of thefts from rural homes, businesses and farms stands at £44.5m in the UK.

Follow us on twitter for community safety updates and crime prevention advice @csafetycdcsbdc

Working together for a safer Chiltern and South Bucks

Help us Fight Rural Crime

For non-emergencies - call 101 or report online - https://www.thamesvalley.police.uk/In an emergency or if a crime is in progress always call 999TVP offers free tool marking please ring 101 and request your local neighbourhood team to contact you. You can also contact Chiltern District Council and South Bucks District Councils’ Joint Community Safety team on 01494 586535 and for further crime reduction advice you can visit: www.chiltern.gov.uk/crimereduction or www.southbucks.gov.uk/crimereduction

This is according to a recent report from The National Farmers Union (NFU) which insures approximately 75% of farms. The impact not only affects insurance premiums it can also have a wider effect on local communities and even food prices.Unfortunately many of these thefts go unreported to the police, making it hard for police forces to understand the full extent of the issues in their area. Although rural crime can be harder to investigate than urban crime, Thames Valley Police (TVP) takes rural crime seriously and urge you to report any incidents. The Community Safety Team from Chiltern & South Bucks District Councils and TVP would like to offer residents a few simple crime prevention measures to help you avoid becoming a victim of crime:Lock your equipment away when not in use – it might sound simple but a lot of burglary is committed by opportunists. If they see

something unattended they will take it.Make your property more secure – consider installing CCTV and alarms, make boundaries secure with good fencing or use natural defences by planting thorny bushes, ensure fixing bolts are secure.Mark your tools and register them free on Immobilise - we recommend your house number and postcode, however anything identifiable can be used. DO NOT use any personal details e.g. your name or contact number.Record make, model and serial number – in the unfortunate circumstances that your items are stolen, you can readily give details to both the police and your insurance company. Report any incidents to the police – this includes reports of suspicious activity or anything that is out of the ordinary; it all helps TVP to build a picture of crime in the area.
