Spring Fling 2013 Brochure

This year we have an action packed event with 25 new participants bringing fresh, exciting ideas to Dumfries and Galloway. Two Young Bursary Award winners join us - Holly and Laura who will both be participating on the brown route near Moniaive. This year we have launched our Neighbours Scheme, and welcome three well respected artists from neighbouring regions. The Springback scheme encourages the return of some of our much loved participants with connections to the region and this year has attracted a number of new faces.

In the Year of Natural Scotland, Environmental Art is playing a bigger part in the event, and we look forward to Alex Rigg’s dance performance ‘Pollen’ happening in three gardens from Moffat to Stranraer, and Robbie Coleman has three treats in store across the region with ‘Fragment’ as part of our Public Art programme.

Our bus tours are increasing, and what better way to enjoy our beautiful scenery than by jumping on a Spring Fling guided tour to undiscovered locations.

The Spring Fling Fringe continues to grow with many more ideas to keep visitors busy in the lovely evenings during the week surrounding the event. Finding these interesting additions will be easy this year thanks to our new fold out map highlighting evening activities and participants’ recommendations. These can all be found on our updated Spring Fling app.

Essential InformationSpring Fling 2013 takes place on Saturday 25, Sunday 26 and Monday 27 May. All studios are open from 10.30 am to 5.30 pm each day.

With 93 artists and makers participating in Spring Fling 2013, a new format Pop-up Taster at Gracefield over the Easter Weekend, and a brand new Taster Exhibition in the east of the region which runs over the Spring Fling weekend, this is your opportunity to preview and purchase art work and offers a unique chance to begin to plan your Spring Fling weekend. Getting HereDumfries and Galloway is well served by the railway network with train stations at Lockerbie, Gretna, Annan, Dumfries, Kirkconnel, Sanquhar and Stranraer on routes between London, Manchester, Newcastle, Carlisle, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Green Studio HoppingMagical Mystery Bus Tour

All aboard for the popular Spring Fling Magical Mystery Bus Tours! Hop on at 10am at one of the designated locations and hop off again at the same location at around 5pm having visited at least five Spring Fling studios en route.

Due to popular demand this year we have increased the tours to six over the weekend. Early booking is recommended as places book up quickly and there are a limited number of tickets for each tour.

All tours start at 10am. Please note that in addition to the official start and end points stated below all tours will start and end at CatStrand, New Galloway, DG7 3RN. The route and timing of all trips is left to the discretion of the driver taking everything into account including safety issues.

Spring Fling Bike Rides

This year Spring Fling coincides with the CTC Scotland and D&G Kirkpatrick MacMillan Cycle Rally held at the Barnsoul campsite near Shawhead. There will be rides focused on visiting studios on both Saturday 25 and Monday 27 May.

On Saturday 25 May the bike ride will leave Barnsoul at 10am for Kirkpatrick Durham (lunch there in the Village Hall), returning to Barnsoul via Glenkiln and the famous statues - an easy 22 mile route.

On Monday 27th May we will be offering two rides, a 50 mile round trip to Kirkcudbright and a 35 mile ride to Moniaive, both starting from Barnsoul at 9:30am. Both Kirkcudbright and Moniaive offer a splendid variety of studios and good eating spots.

Spring Fling Guided Walk

Organised by Galloway Holidays, the ever-popular leisurely Sunday walking tour is sure to invigorate and inspire.

Starting Time and Location - Sunday 26 May. Gather 1.30pm for 1.40pm start from outside Old Smugglers Inn in Auchencairn.

Route - Visit the studios of Jennie Ashmore, Trevor Leat and Janet O’Donnell in and around Auchencairn and include a walk to Red Haven Bay and Torr Point.

Terrain - Paths and grass field. Walks Grade - moderate. Clothing - sturdy footwear and outdoor clothing to suit weather conditions. Distance - 4.5 miles.

Young Artist Our Young Artists Programme awards a bursary and a period of mentoring to a recent graduate with a connection to Dumfries and Galloway.

Mentor Our Mentoring Programme is linked to the Young Artists Programme and to this each Mentor has dedicated their time and professional expertise.

Wigtown Resident Working with the Wigtown Book Festival, Spring Fling each year hosts the second part of this collaborative residency.

Graduate ExhibitionHaving been influenced and inspired by workshops with three past and present Spring Fling artists; Isabell Buenz, Hope London and Katharine Wheeler, a group of 17 emerging artists and makers from Dumfries and Galloway College have been invited to hold their graduate exhibition to coincide with Spring Fling 2013.

The work of the students is diverse, from painting to printing and ceramics. Organised and delivered by the students, the exhibition is titled ‘Studio 2086’ and can be viewed by visiting The Bakers Oven in the centre of Dumfries (High Street, Dumfries, DG1 2QT).

About the 2013 Spring Fling workshop leaders:

Isabell Buenz is an artist who works with paper, using this versatile material to create artists’ books, paper sculptures, installations and her whimsical paper shoes. Her pieces often include photography and text.

With a background in law, artist Hope London’s 25 years experience have influenced her satirical graphic novel “M. Contraband Esq., Punk Lawyer” which tackles the subject of legal issues affecting the arts and creative industries.

Katharine Wheeler, an artist specialising in portraiture and figurative work graduated in 2001 and takes part in Spring Fling as a Springback artist. This year Katharine can be found in studio 67, p52.

Young Artists Mentoring ProgrammeHolly ClothierMentored by Lucianne Lassalle

Holly Clothier uses mixed media and textiles to create conceptual, unconventional, organic 3D sculptures, maximising the capabilities of the materials to express unresolved emotions and fears which manifest themselves in nightmares. A 2012 graduate from Loughborough University, Holly Clothier studied Multi-Media Textiles. Now 23 and living in Leicester, Holly’s family roots are in Dumfries and she has maintained strong links with Dumfries and Galloway since childhood. In the run up to Spring Fling Holly will be mentored by Lucianne Lassalle (Studio 52, p41), a sculptor and painter who has lived and worked in Dumfries and Galloway for many years. Holly will show her work during Spring Fling 2013 on the Brown Route (Studio 53, p42).

Laura PerryMentored by Denise Zygadlo

Specialising in printed textiles, Laura Perry graduated from Glasgow School of Art with a BA Honours in Textile Design in 2011. Inspired by architectural structures and their range of colours, Laura likes to contrast harsh lines and geometric shapes with soft fluid fabrics. Now 24, Laura spent periods of her childhood with family in Dumfries and Galloway and continues to find inspiration in the region, travelling from her home in South Ayrshire. Laura, in the run up to Spring Fling will be mentored by Denise Zygadlo (studio 64, p49) an artist whose primary interest is the exploration of the relationship between the human body and cloth. Laura will show her work during Spring Fling 2013 on the Brown Route (Studio 54, p42).

The BlogFresh on the blog each Friday is our hugely popular LILO Q&A. This began as a series of lectures in 2012 (Looking In - Looking Out) and has blossomed into a weekly unique and un-edited insight into what, where and why artists create in the spaces they choose.

Spring Fling Wigtown Book Festival Residency Always popular with visitors is the annual collaboration betweenSpring Fling & Wigtown Book Festival. In recent years thefestival partnership has welcomed resident artists such as textile artist Deirdre Nelson and photographer Kim Ayres (studio 24 this year) to engage with and fascinate both events’ discerning visitors.

This year is no different and visitors to Spring Fling are in for a treat with our 2012/2013 resident Joanne B Kaar.

Joanne, an international artist who works with paper and natural fibres, lives and works from the northerly Dunnett in Caithness and has completed residencies, exhibited in and been commissioned in as diverse locations as, Dounraey, North Uist, Korea, Taiwan, Tasmania, Germany, USA and Japan.

Before beginning her residency at Wigtown Book Festival 2012 Joanne made two string dogs Newton and Stewart (named by Wigtown Book Festival goers). During the Book Festival Joanne collected grasses and natural fibres from local gardens, and used traditional techniques to make simmans or rope. She invited festival-goers to have a go at ‘spinning a yarn’ by adding a few words to the simmans as it was made. Newton and Stewart’s story evolved in a random fashion. It was a real adventure.

I create original prints specialising in the collagraph printmaking technique. This method creates unpredictable results enabling me to create dynamic, textural and vibrant prints with an emphasis on colour. I am inspired by the stunning natural beauty in Wigtownshire. My recent work explores the diverse coastal landscape of the Machars, particularly the rich textures and constantly changing colours that can be seen in the area. Visitors can gain an insight into the Printmaking process and see demonstrations of how a collagraph print is created on my converted mangle printing press.

Born and bred in rural Wigtownshire, my paintings are like snapshots, capturing and archiving a way of life. Varying from animal to person to landscape, my subject matter varies, but all are important and mean something to me. I predominantly paint in oils, and also do ink stipplings. The light and colours gifted to us by the ever changing weather in Wigtownshire, is especially inspiring to me.

I paint primarily in acrylics and enjoy working on both mountain and coastal subjects as a landscape painter, with motifs taken from the far northwestern reaches of the highlands to the southernmost tip of scotland here in in our beautiful county. I am always searching for an expressive equivalent in paint of my experiences of nature, and visitors will see a wide range of new works, from small to large, topographical to experimental. There is also a picture-framing workshop on site which can be viewed.

directions: Follow the A746 into the centre of Whithorn south from Newton Stewart, pass all the town shops and museum, and the sudio is on the right of the street.

recommendations: The Central Cafe (5). In the centre of this bustling town, the Central Cafe is a very friendly family-run venue providing a wide range of meals, home-made ice cream and sweets. Their curries are a specialty. The Whithorn Story Museum (6). Boasting one of the finest collections of early Christian carved stones in Britain and an extensive history of Whithorn, its priory and Scotland’s first saint, Ninian, this is a must-see for any visitor to Whithorn. There is also a temporary exhibitions gallery and audio-visual display.

Over the past year I have been working in a new medium; Japanese woodblock printing, and have been developing a number of bird woodcuts inspired by Inuit art. I am still working in a wide variety of western print media and new framed and unframed linocuts and etchings of the birds and landscape of Scotland will also be on display. Cards and artists books will also be for sale. I would describe my work as design-led, decorative and broadly (but not slavishly!) representational. I will be demonstrating throughout the weekend.

Flowers are a passion, but recently and quite unexpectedly, birds with their bright eyes, have crept into my work. My paintings have elements of the remembered and imagined as well as the observed. The decorative always draws me to a subject: a flower market, patterns on hillsides or the rhythms of boats bobbing in the harbour. The studio is a veritable Aladdin’s cave of objets trouvés. The flotsam and jetsam gathered over years that people my still life paintings. Visitors will also find new work, sketchbooks and paintings in progress.

My work consists of still life, urban landscape, and figurative oil paintings influenced by my surroundings. My paintings are subconscious translations of the world around me, and reflect longing and mortality. A momento mori theme is reflected in my still lifes through objects such as trapped goldfish, cages, maps, and iconic images. My portraits capture figures rooted within Scottish surroundings, looking disconnected - as if longing for something. My urban landscapes incorporate buildings and doorways that hint at our inquisitive nature - a way of glimpsing inside another person’s realm.

As an artist I am still excited by the smell of turps and tubes of fresh oil colour so enticing I could eat them! Wheel thrown porcelain and stoneware pots that are wood fired to 1300.C. From delicate porcelain beakers with pale celadon glazes; to a new range of slab built stoneware dishes that are simply decorated with slips and glaze, on clay that owes its rich texture and colour to the granite sand from the Galloway hills. I paint outdoors whenever I can, my aim is to capture a sense of place and mood at a certain moment in time. Usually the effect of light is my focus, a quite plain scene can be transformed by atmospheric light into a dramatic view. My work is inspired by the lovely scenery of the Galloway Hills and Solway Coast, its numerous monuments and built heritage, and the wonderful quality of light. In recent years, I have been been increasingly focussing on landscape and seascape, often featuring patterns of sunlight and shadow on masonry, stones or rocks, contrasted with the soft textures and varied seasonal colours of vegetation. Visitors will see work in progress using water-thinned acrylics. Completed paintings, prints and greetings cards will be on display and available for purchase.

This year my attention has been caught by the countryside around me, particularly the patterns of hedgerows, field and trees. I try to work outdoors as much as possible - drawing and sketching across the seasons, setting out to document their subtle but pronounced effects on the Galloway landscape. Meanwhile, my interest in kitchen gardens and allotments continues. I use watercolour and pen-and-ink for larger works and traditional print-making techniques and materials to create smaller prints and hand-coloured solar-plate etchings. Displays will outline the printmaking process I use.

Through remaking my practise examines 21st century consumer culture and questions where our lives are focused. I am continuing to employ Japanese woodblock printing techniques for my illustrative designs of birds, flowers and landscapes. I have also been experimenting with designs that focus on colour rather than form. I am a silk screen textile producer, creating limited run or one off pieces of art, clothing and accessories. I am a recent graduate from Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen, who was given my studio in Kirkcudbright by the Hollywood Trust to further my work. I produce my prints using a unique combination of photographic, illustrative, silk printing and dying techniques, to create a diverse range of products. All works have the central pillar of quality contemporary textiles and creative craftsmanship, translating observations I have made from the surrounding beauty of the Scottish countryside into print.

I’ve been living in Galloway for two years and I’d like to give this year’s Spring Fling visitors an insight into my experiences and influences from this part of the world. For 2013 I will preview a new collection of patterns and related creations alongside my usual array of brightly coloured fabrics and wallpapers, limited edition cushions, scarves, bags, and unique patchworked kimono, skirts, throws and wall hangings. My technique evolves from shapes seen and photographed, from life and books, line drawings and computer manipulation. These are digitally printed onto fabrics and wallpapers.

I’ve been incorporating new colours, combinations and designs into my glasswork this year. The Glass Meadows wall installation will be a centrepiece once more, I use the techniques of fusing, draping, slumping and sandblasting glass to create the different designs that will be on display throughout the studio in the form of many decorative and functional objects. I am also experimenting with a new design process, creating draped pendant lampshades. These will add an extra dimension to the glass on display.

My paintings are about my experience of the natural world. I am interested in its complexity and beauty. They are strongly based on shapes and textures in the natural world but are interpreted through my own emotional response. I let the paintings evolve using a blend of intuitive gestures and conscious forms. I like them to have freedom in movement coupled with a sense of balance. As well as finished pieces, visitors will have a chance to see my workings and ideas through sketchbooks, photography and drawings.

A ceramic artist in South West Scotland. Although my first language is not English I find it a rich source of inspiration. Listening to the way people speak reminds me of something, conjuring up a mental image, gives me an idea for another piece. My main medium is clay but I use any material that fits the work, be it new wood, drift wood, wire, metal, plastic, recycled materials. I like to make pieces with humour, almost like 3D cartoons, and if people laugh at my work I have succeeded!

It is a beautiful material to use and its versatility encourages me in the making of flowing figurative sculpture and strong carrying baskets. This year I will be demonstrating various weaving techniques, (when space and time allows), and showing some smaller scale sculptural work, garden pieces and a new selection of traditional baskets.

This past year I have been working with glass powders; blending unique colours and increasing the detail seen on the surfaces of my glass. My work is based on a love of collections, whether in a junk shop, a curiosity cabinet or jewellery box. Curios are collated by an individual according to their own unique experiences and understanding of the pieces. For the viewer, these sometimes unusual combinations of objects can throw up more questions than answers. This ambiguity only intrigues me further and to me encourages an imagined abstract narrative. When translating these ideas into my jewellery I incorporate the shapes, textures and often collected objects themselves. These juxtapositions create balance, elevating these unconventionally beautiful items.

Sculpture, Pottery, Paintings, Drawings. My work is mostly inspired by the human form, contemporary dance/theatre and ancient mythologies. I work from tabletop size to life size in clay and cast into bronze and cold cast iron and bronze resin. Some of my sculpture is suitable for outside. My work is expressed through the construction of textile sculptures. Using different fabrics and mixed media I create unconventional 3D sculptures. I find that textiles give me the versatility and control over what I wish to create, I enjoy making interesting structures and surfaces. Through my sculptures I am exploring the idea that our suppressed worries and fears manifest themselves when we let our body sleep and our mind open up. Unresolved fears can often be expressed through our unconscious mind, transforming them into nightmares. The forms of my work are organic in their design, expressing the fluid nature of the concept; created using a mixture of machine and hand sewing techniques.

I am a designer of Printed Textiles. I have always been drawn to fashion and since I can remember have been making things. For every piece I make I always like to think of the way it will look on the body and what it could become. For me print allows limitless colour and shape for my designs, creating something beautiful yet practical. My inspiration comes from architectural structures and their range of colours, which is not as narrow as you might imagine. The design process starts with plenty of research and experimentation with angles and different surroundings. My ideas then grow through drawing and collage, giving me a real focus on colour and shape. Visitors will be able to gain an insight into printed textiles and see drawings and sketchbooks along with work for sale.

My interests remain in the north encompassing Iceland, Shetland and Orkney and their shared histories of seafaring in difficult waters. Currently combining etching with more 3Dimensional applications, from artists’ books to constructions in box frames, messages in bottles and the mesmeric words of the Shipping Forecast, I’m aiming to create some of the atmosphere of old forgotten museums. On show will be framed and unframed paintings of all sizes, etchings, tools and press, touchable sample prints, sketchbooks showing ideas development and Studio Sale section. I work in printmaking and mixed media, often using more than one type of printing technique and then combining this with drawings, ceramic, fabric and paper resulting in both 3D collaged works and 2D prints. My paintings are loose, colourful, energetic and generally landscapes. My work is often inspired by fields and fences, wind and weather and coastal visits. I enjoy experimenting with colour and trying out new techniques. I work in acrylic on canvas in all sizes. I will have a “shed sale” of older work and other bits and pieces. With large rotund forms and vibrant colours and glazes, my distinctive take makes for ceramics which exude style and personality. Most of my lino cut prints started out as illustrations commissioned for books and magazines. Over the years I have illustrated many different subjects: gardening, country life, food, and all of Shakespeare’s plays. In the studio, visitors can roll ink onto a lino cut and make a print to take home, using my antique cast iron press.

What intrigues me is the process of a work, the study, drawing, and the backbone that brings it all together. I see my new paintings/drawings as explorations of this, hopefully saying only what needs to be said in the detail leaving the rest unhidden, perhaps giving a glimpse of my working story. For this years Spring Fling I will be including new works exhibiting this process from drawn and painted sketches, both figurative and landscape orientated, through to finished pieces of all sizes.

I am currently working with a fairly subtle palette using different clays as a base. This involves stretching, layering and folding the clay, then imprinting the surface; printmaking with clay and glaze instead of paper and ink. I am also exploring themes and concepts with lettering and text-based work, and influences range from American gun culture through Jazz to Japanese haiku and other general whimsy. The French poet and art critic Charles Baudelaire highlighted the distinction between ‘finished’ and ‘complete.’ A painting can be ‘unfinished’ in the conventional sense but have reached completion as a coherent expressive statement. Such a work would gain nothing of relevance from further additions or refinement. In my most recent work I’ve been exploring this matter. Except where I’ve wanted to suggest stillness and the slow passage of time, I’ve actively resisted the urge to refine the brushwork and paint to the corners, concentrating instead on capturing my primary interest - perhaps only a facial likeness or the general pose and atmosphere of a model - within a strict time limit. These self-imposed time limits often leave me with unresolved elements and bare priming, but it’s the best way I’ve found to preserve the pure, channelled excitement that I experience in painting.

My inspiration comes from the Orkneys: their archaeology, landscape and geology and also Norwegian influences on the islands. Detailed research, particularly Norse mythology allows for connections to another world and way of life. With depictions of characters by the seaside and animals in fields, my paintings capture a narrative glimpsed from the environment around me. Looking around my studio I am amazed by the amount of equipment I seem to have amassed over the years. There are extruders and pugmills for squeezing clay, a slab roller for squashing clay, wheels for spinning clay, as well as wood and metal working tools for die making. All of these are used to create my ceramic compositions, such as extruded boats, an open topped tour bus, ceramic furniture or long illustrative dishes. Come and be as surprised and hopefully excited as I am by the results.

By exploring into the subjectivity of maternal interruption we first must question what is an interruption? In order to produce an interruption, There has to be an insertion of a gap, however narrow it’s dimensions. Gaps, breaks etc are notoriously hard to get close to. They elude scrutiny, showing themselves in their non-being. Perhaps the frustration caused by constant interruption is in part about having to face these elusive blanks. I like to work outside responding directly to my subject using acrylic and watercolours. I continue to enjoy the expressive use of colour in my oil and acrylic painting. A new theme is heads and figures based on ‘the senses’. In these I explore intimacy, and private moments of amusement, pathos and delight in things seen, smelled, tasted, touched or heard. Ongoing also, are still life tabletop vistas and ‘Turn Me’s‘. Imagination, and a feeling response to colour and texture guide my process, and surprise at the end is not unusual. As well as painting, prints and cards and preparatory works will be shown.

G1 The Art Work Room ‘The art work room’ is a gallery and art work space opened by artist Linda Lyons in July 2012. Throughout the year an exciting mix of quality modern and traditional artworks are on display combining paintings, prints, drawings, ceramics and jewellery. Prices are wide ranging and cater for every budget. For Spring Fling 2013 there will be a month-long exhibition open to the public from 11 May through to 8 June. Visitors will see work by Bella Green, Maggie Savage, Linda Lyons, Andi Alexander, Gill Shreeve & Anna Wright amongst others. Some of the Artists will be on hand on 25 & 27 May. ‘the art work room’ is beautifully lit and has a very special atmosphere. Visitors have commented on how uplifting it is to walk through the door. The gallery doubles as a workspace for various Art classes throughout the year. Please note the gallery is closed on Sundays.

Moffat is just minutes away from the M74 and ‘the art work room’ is very easily found at the top of Moffat High Street to the right of the Moffat Pottery.

G2 Project Art Lockerbie A co-operative of 20 artists, now in their third year, share the gallery with owner and photographer George Porteous. We show a wide range of paintings, drawings, prints, and photographs, as well as cards, jewellery and other craftwork. Gift vouchers are available.

From Dumfries, take A75 east and A709. In Lockerbie turn left at traffic lights. Gallery is in town centre opposite Town Hall. From A74(M) exit at junction 17 or junction 18 if heading north from Carlisle.

G3 The Summer Gallery On the edge of South West Scotland’s ‘Dark Skies Park’, a newly designated UNESCO Biosphere, the short summer nights are bright with stars, while the Galloway Hills offer challenging walks during the long summer days. On your way, visit ‘The Summer Gallery’ and find enchantment in a tiny converted byre in the quiet heart of Galloway. Grey and green for most of the year, wild flowers and birds surround Auchenhay in summer.

Come and enjoy the original paintings and etchings on display, including a range of abstract and figurative work, together with occasional surprises by invited artists throughout the summer. Suzanne Stuart Davies and Malcolm Davies respond to ‘a sense of place’, which reflects their interest in landscape, wildlife and history. Visitors are welcome to the gallery and cottage garden, which opens after Spring Fling until the end of August.

At Crockerford, on A75, turn on to A712. After 5 miles, turn right at the green GALLERY sign. Two miles along the single track road, after passing a farm and a cottage, the road rises and Auchenhay Cottage is on the left. Parking is by the gallery.

G4 McGill Duncan Gallery Established in 1978, this large gallery consists of five fascinating rooms, each of a different size and character. It is a family business run by mother and daughter Jill and Zoë Blamire who are passionate about selling original art of lasting value. They continue a long established tradition of selling Scottish paintings from the 19th Century onwards, including Galloway painters such as Charles Oppenheimer RSA RSW 1875 - 1961, James Faed Jnr 1856 - 1920, and James Paterson RSA RSW 1854 - 1932. The gallery’s contemporary work is equally sought after, and it has a nationwide reputation for selling work by national and international artists and makers. Current exhibitors include well known Scottish artists such as Sandy Murphy RSW RGI PAI, Simon Laurie RSW RGI, and Claire Harrigan RSW in a year round exhibition programme. The gallery has an outstanding collection of original prints and ceramics for sale.

Enter Castle Douglas from the A75 and drive down the main street past the crossroad at the lower end of the street. The gallery is on the left hand side opposite the bus stop and the public toilets.

G6 The Whitehouse Gallery The Whitehouse Gallery is one of the regions leading spaces for exhibiting Fine Art and Applied Art & Craft. Now into its ninth year, it has gained a solid reputation for exhibiting work of a high standard, with work from established artists sitting alongside up-and-coming talent.

During Spring Fling the gallery is hosting ‘Horizons’ which focuses upon land and seascapes. Fine Artists confirmed include Rosanne Barr, Paul Bennett, Grace McDonald Cameron, Stewart Lammie, Debbie Neill and Valerie Sadler. This exhibition will also focus on Artist Woodworker Phil Crennell, with a new collection of his ‘Live-Edge’ furniture. The exhibition runs from 4th May - 22nd June. The gallery will also be hosting a Preloved and Vintage clothes & accessories Pop-Up shop event on Friday 24th May, from 6.30-9pm. Why not bag a few unique items whilst enjoying a glass of wine or two! Bring your friends.

G5 Clience Studio This bright, welcoming gallery in Castle Douglas displays Angela Lawrence’s contemporary and atmospheric land and seascapes, mostly from Scotland, especially Galloway and the Solway Coast. Wild moorland, brooding mountains and shifting shadows contrast with the tranquil lure of distant horizons, while vibrant seascapes refresh us. In the award winning Sea Spirits series we see the sea in close-up, studying the Western Isles and Galloway coastline.

Angela Lawrence is commissioned internationally and exhibits widely, including the R.G.I, G.S.W.A, and Paisley Institute. Recently she took part in a Glasgow University lecture series (LI-LO). Angela is always happy to discuss affordable commissions. Oil and watercolour originals are on view in a changing display, all year at Clience Studio, along with high quality giclee prints and art gift items. Taking part in Spring Fling with exciting new work and event offers!
