PCC claims state Basic Skills student and instructor awardsA PCC student and a PCC instructor were both named winners of State Basic Skills Awards for the year. Student Curtis Wayne Wesley was named the recipient of the 2008-09 Angela Moore Trogdon Student of Year award, and PCC instructor Lisa Jones, an instructor at the Dan River Prison Work Farm in Caswell County, was chosen to receive the 2008-09 Angela Moore Trogdon Instructor of the Year award. The awards were presented Nov. 17 in Raleigh during the annual Basic Skills conference.

Teaching adults is my passion! Turning on students’ light bulb of knowledge is why I love what I do. It is the picture of a face that is brightened with confidence as a student succeeds that inspires me. This kind of moment in my day is priceless!

I am a facilitator, collaborator and a coordinator in my role of instructor. I facilitate knowledge more than teach it because students learn best through experiencing and discovering than in just being told information. In my classes, I try to make learning relevant and use practices that will help my students to succeed. What is meaningful for one may not be meaningful to another so humor often helps us to bridge the gap between students and between students and me.

Teaching is a rewarding experience for me and I am fond of the challenges that corrections education poses. Education is a means to help students to succeed. It is my hope that I enhance students’ lives as they also enhance mine.

After raising my family of five children, and after laying brick for 30 years, I was finally able to focus on my education. It had been 35 years since I had been in school. So, I was not sure I could do it. But, my friend and co-worker who was enrolled in Piedmont Community College’s GED program encouraged me to “give it a shot.”

In October 2007, I went to PCC’s GED program’s placement test session to figure out how I should start my GED studies. The Adult Basic Skills (ABS) Student Success Coordinator counseled me, assigned me to a class, and really encouraged me to not just get a GED but to take PCC’s college courses after the GED.

I marched proudly in PCC’s graduation ceremony in May 2009 as a 2008-09 GED graduate. Since then, I have begun a career path towards my dream of being a nurse by enrolling into PCC’s pre-nursing program in fall 2009. Finally, after 25 years of thinking about becoming a nurse, I am finally doing it thanks to PCC!

Initially I started my business in my home; I had the knowledge base, but no clients and very limited funds. I quickly realized that I needed to get into an office setting in a good location to attract customers and lots of them. When I visited the Chamber of Commerce to inquire about becoming a member of the Chamber, I also inquired about renting affordable office space. The Chamber advised me about the Piedmont Community College incubator program at the Small Business and Entrepreneurship Center (BDEC).

Affordable office space, low overhead cost, in a prime location with lots of traffic. What a blessing! Access to copy machine, internet service, shredder, paper cutter, meeting space, professional mentoring, educational seminars including building my own website which I am very proud of (www.ptpinsurance.com).

Randy Reynolds, BDEC director, has provided priceless coaching and counseling from personnel issues to financial matters. Tracy Brandon, assistant to the director, has provided many hours of technical and administrative support. This program provides you with a wealth of information unique to small business and resources to support your business.

We have grown to two full-time employees and two part-time employees, and we currently serve over 800 clients in Person County and continue to grow. Thank you Piedmont Community College for the Small Business incubator program! Without this program, I would not have been able to build a successful business here in Person County.
