NCCAP MOVES FORWARD!By Michael A. Bower, ACC

This June in Ohio NCCAP is holding its first Educational Symposium. Now that the

MEPAP 2nd Edition has been established and many MEPAP instructors are in place across the country, NCCAP is ready to take the next step. We listened to the instructors when they voiced their need for on-going support as adult trainers and the result is the NCCAP Educational Symposium.

As we prepared to roll out the specialty tracks in January of this year, the NCCAP Board of Directors and the

Executive Director recognized that our instructors needed more

information and support in how best to train to the specialties. During the symposium roundtable, panels of experts on Dementia, Assisted Living, and Adult Day, as well as Skilled Nursing, will lead the discussions and instruction. A few examples of other sessions are: teaching NCCAP certification, practicums, memory care programming, and in-services/training techniques. (For more information, go to the NCCAP website)

It is not NCCAP’s intention to supplant the training provided by other organizations, but to provide those professionals who provide education to activity assistants, directors and consultants with the tools that they need to stay current, sharp and effective as educators. We are hoping for honest and constructive feed-back as to how we have done on our first excursion into putting on a symposium, because we want every year’s symposium to be an improvement upon the last. We hope that many of you will visit with us at the NCCAP booth at the NAAP Conference in Albuquerque, New Mexico this April and learn more about the symposium, the specialty tracks and the other projects that NCCAP is working on to help our membership and profession remain competitive within the senior care industry.

This June in Ohio NCCAP is holding its first Educational Symposium. Now that the MEPAP 2nd Edition has

been established and many MEPAP instructors are in place across the country, NCCAP is ready to take the next step.

We listened to the instructors when they voiced their need for on-going support as adult trainers and the

result is the NCCAP Educational Symposium.

I am so pleased to see how NCCAP has grown since I became a member in 1990; it is very rewarding to be a part of a dynamic organization that has, and continues, to serve its members well. During the symposium, at the annual membership meeting, we will be seating our two new members to the board, and bidding a fond farewell to two members who are leaving the board after years of service. We encourage as many of you as possible to attend the meeting, but for those who cannot, the minutes of the meeting and the board members’ reports will be posted on the website for all to see as soon as they are available. Keep in mind that there are always volunteer jobs available on NCCAP committees, and we hope that many of you will consider working on a committee, and, eventually, running for a board position.

2008 Special Issues Report

By Nancy Best, ACC, CTRS

2008 was a very interesting year. I assisted in scholarship selections for various awards, including the first Ralph O. Best award, in honor of my father. Cindy Bradshaw assigned me to the new symposium in June. I have been working on communication with other state contacts for public relations for the seminar. I have also contacted several individuals who are business owners or are connected to the field in other areas. I serve as the contact for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and have been

working with individuals for certification. Legislation is a very important issue facing us now. In March, we met with Phil English, the past Pennsylvania representative. My local state Rep. is interested in “jumping on board” for Activities in Pennsylvania. We are planning on follow-up meetings. I have contacted my recently elected federal legislator for a meeting. Much work lies ahead. I look forward to seeing many of you at the symposium.

NCCAP Symposium 2009Endnote SpeakerThe Generational ImperativeChuck Underwood, President of the Generational Imperative

Chuck Underwood is the founder and president of The Generational

Imperative, Inc., a generational business consultancy based in Cincinnati.

His comprehensive book on generational dynamics-The Generational Imperative: Understanding Generational Differ-ences In The Workplace, Marketplace, And Living Room – is now available for purchase ($16.99) online at www.amazon.com and at most trad-itional bookstores.

He is the host of two national-television specials, the fi rst of a series of shows entitled America’s Generations With Chuck Underwood, which are beginning to air on PBS stations nationwide.

Having studied and researched the generational values and beliefs that guide the decision-making of Americans for two decades, long before it became an established fi eld of study, he is a

pioneering scholar of, and leading authority on, generational dynamics in both the workplace and marketplace. Chuck began his generational research in the late 1980s, long before the discipline garnered widespread attention of American business.

He is formally trained in qualitative research methodology and focus group moderating. His research clients now include such giants as Macy’s, Procter & Gamble, Coca Cola, Western-Southern Insurance, Globus And Cosmos Travel, and others. And he conducts his own proprietary generational research to guide his work with TGI’s clients.

The Ohio University School of Business grad spent his earlier career in the mass media of radio and television, fi rst as an award-winning broadcast journalist and national sports play-by-play announcer, and then as a creator and producer of original programming.

Chuck’s media career and generational consulting merged several years ago,

when he produced a one-hour television Special for public television, entitled America’s Generations: The Silents. Soon after that show aired, he received a phone call from a speakers’ bureau, asking him to speak on the subject of Generational Marketing Strategy to the prestigious National Summit On Retirement Savings, which gathered nearly three-hundred senior executives in the fi nancial-services industries for a three-day business conference in Washington, D. C. Sharing the speakers’ roster with President Bush, Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan, and other national luminaries, Chuck’s

presentation generated instant requests from the Summit delegates to consult their companies and speak to their national conventions about generational dynamics.

The timing was serendipitous: American business was ready to

learn about generational influences on the workplace and marketplace, and Chuck Underwood was more-than-ready to present it.

Chuck Underwood will be our Key Note Speaker presenting “The Generational Imperative” at the 2010 NCCAP Symposium, June 4&5, 2010 to be held at the Holiday Inn Cincinnati Airport.

The Generational Imperative

Here they come, into our NCCAP world: the Baby Boomers. Forever young; revolutionary; idealistic; assertive; demanding; the career-driven generation; the save-the-world generation. They will age like no prior generation. And we have no choice: we must get into their heads and understand what makes them tick, what their preferences are for patient care, activities, and facilities. This session will pour the foundation for your understanding of this unique generation, and it will give you the knowledge you need to head back to work and make accurate decisions about dealing with the generation born from 1946 to 1964.

NCCAP is excited to participate in the 2009 NAAP Conference as a vendor and also as the co-sponsor of the Madge Schweinsberg scholarship, that enables two deserving NCCAP certified individuals that are also NAAP Members to attend the NAAP conference each year.

In addition to participating in the NAAP conference, this year NCCAP will also be participating in the AHCA conference in Chicago, Illinois 10/09, the Pioneer Network Conference in Little Rock, Ark 8/09, the AAHSA Conference also in Chicago, Illinois 11/09, and several state conferences.

While this will cost a considerable amount of money, in the strategic planning of NCCAP, the Board of Directors felt this was a necessary investment in our continued quest to spread the importance of national certification and imperative to increase the awareness of hiring qualified/certified individuals in the healthcare market throughout the United States, among administrators and owners on behalf of NCCAP and the certified members.

The NCCAP annual meeting will be held in conjunction with the NCCAP Symposium, please see the web site for details or further information.

NCCAP Renewal ProcessBy Kathy Hughes, ADCNCCAP VPOnce you mail us your renewal packet, we receive it in the NCCAP office. We then pull your check to be processed. Then we go to your existing file and review your last renewal form. We also pre-screen your packet to make sure that it contains all the required components.

Your packet is then added to other packets and sent via mail to our trained volunteers who are activity professionals just like you and me. This might take a week or more. They then have 2 weeks (14 business days) to review the 20+ packets that they receive. They are then mailed back to the NCCAP Office and again reviewed to make sure that all the required information is there. Your renewal application is then placed in your file. We then process your renewal, make a new certificate and mail it to you. This process can take from 6-10 weeks, depending on the time of year and how busy the volunteer reviewers are in their day to day jobs. This process can take time, dependent upon the Postal Service and the amount of information that our reviewers have to look through.

If there are any questions or concerns about your renewal, you are contacted for additional information. If you have not heard from us, please rest assured that your packet is being processed as quickly as possible.

1. In order to expedite your renewal you may want to do the following:When you attend a conference or multiple session workshop, simply place the title of the conference on the renewal line, the dates of the conference and the total hours. You do not have to list individual sessions.

Example;(FHCACA 2009 midyear seminar July 3, 2009 6 hours) Versus writing -Documentation July 3, 2009 1.5Using the Wii July 3, 2009 1.5Baby Boomers July 3, 2009 1.5Music of the Heart July 3, 2009 1.5

2. Make sure that your certificates have the following information on them:

a. name of the attendee

b. title of the educational session

c. date of the session — Sessions/workshops over 8 hours need to include a time outline verifying the number of hours attended

d. clock hours spent in the session

e. instructor’s name and credentials

f. signature of instructor or sponsor

g. sponsoring agency

3. When you list your certificates, make sure that they are in that order. For example, if you attended a NAAP conference and you listed it as #1 then that certificate

should be on the top of the pile. You may even place #1 on that certificate. It helps the reviewers find the certificates.

4. Remember that it does take some time to review renewals. With over 6,700 NCCAP members sending in their renewals every two years the volunteers can get overwhelmed. NCCAP notifies you three months before your renewal date. You may want to get your renewal in early.

5. You should send in only the certificates from the session that you attended. Handouts, brochures and other information adds to the cost of mailing your information. You only need to send an outline of a session if the session is not a conference or multi-session program and lasted for more than 8 hours. Then you only need to send a time outline from the session attached to the certificate.

6. Home study, online courses or sessions held on the Internet must be NCCAP Pre-approved. Please contact the company directly to assure that the course is NCCAP Per-approved. They will have a NCCAP pre-approval number.

7. Mandatory In-services can count as 20% of your continuing education. You may want to use the NCCAP Sample certificate to document your in-services. Here is the link: http://www.nccap.org/pre_approvals/certificate.shtml

8. If you are looking for your renewal form or have lost it we do have it available on our web site at: http://www.nccap.org/recertification/NCCAP%20Renewal%20Form.pdf

9. For Specialty Tracks, you can list the hours required for your renewal at the end of the list on your renewal form.

10. All of our NCCAP Standards as well as the NCCAP Application are available on our web site at www.nccap.org.
