By Josh Randt Sports Editor After losing key pieces from last year’s team that went 8-3 and made it back to the Class AAA state tourna- ment for the first time since 2010, the Panther football team will have to do what it’s done before: reload. Softening that blow is the addition of leg- endary coach Dave Dose, who takes over as defen- sive co- ordinator for current Glen- coe-Silver Lake’s newly ap- pointed Activities Director Dean Schwirtz. Dose was an assistant last year, and offering him the po- sition was a “no brainer,” ac- cording to Head Coach Scott Tschimperle. “He was the only name that myself, or any of my coaches, could come up with,” said Tschimperle, who also com- mented on his predecessor’s intelligence, and love for the program. “Just the knowledge he has for the game, and the passion he has for Panther football – it’s only going to benefit our kids and make us a better team. Nobody’s more competitive in this sport than he is. We’ve got the right guy in the right position.” After a surgery on his knee, Dose said he’s feeling better than ever, and is excited to take on the defense again. Headlining a list of depart- ing seniors were running backs Jake Stuedemann and Dalton Clouse, who account- ed for 2,484 of Glencoe-Sil- ver Lake’s 3,793 rushing yards a season ago. Remove them, along with fellow back Colton Lueders and a good portion of the offensive line, and it’s clear the Panthers have to shore things up offen- sively before the opening whistle at Stevens Seminary Stadium this Friday against Orono. Consider this: the three backs taking over on offense this year – Gus Mendoza, Jacob VonBerge, and Tyler Chap – accounted for a total of 14 carries and 59 yards combined in 2013. But after Saturday’s scrimmage with Minneapolis North and BOLD, Tschimperle said he isn’t that concerned. “We expect Gus to have a big year this year. Jacob Von- Berge has done a great job as far as stepping up and learn- ing the whole offensive play- book,” Tschimperle said. “Tyler Chap is going to be a tremendous fullback. He ran the ball extremely hard and ran over people (Saturday).” He then added, “We definite- ly have to work on our block- ing.” Four of the top five defen- sive players also left this past spring, including captain line- backers Keenan Mehlos and Carter Pinske, who combined for 131 tackles. Defensive tackle Tyler Donnay led the charge on the line last year, By Josh Randt Sports Editor After going 10-17 and losing in the opening round of the sec- tion volleyball tournament in five sets to the Jordan Jaguars, Lori Schwirtz’s Lady Panthers are set on 17 wins instead of losses. Kerslake and Olivia Scharpe are the only seniors on this team, and the former entered into 2014 with 978 digs after posting 363 a season ago, along with 154 kills. She eclipsed 1,000 digs after tallying 23 at the team’s first game Saturday against Cannon Falls, a disap- pointing five-set loss in which the Panthers fell behind after giving up the first two sets. The Bombers took set five 15-10 after the Panthers won back-to- back sets 25-19 and 25-22. “I’m (125) away from the school record, and I really want that,” Kerslake said. “But as a team, I want more than 10 wins ... This year, we’re at least going to get 17.” That goal doesn’t seem lofty to Schwirtz, who said this year’s biggest concern is men- tality. “We have the skill. We have the strength,” said Schwirtz. “It’s going to be (about) mo- mentum and setting a tone of not playing with teams.” Like last year, the word “scrappy” was thrown around, which is what the Panthers will have to be without a single starter nearing six feet in Section B Wednesday, August 27, 2014 The McLeod County Chronicle ports S Chronicle photo by Josh Randt Piper Davis began her run as GSL’s No. 1 singles player this past week by going 2-3 over five matches at a pair of home quads last week. The skipper had good reason to be happy; the nine goals his girls scored were four more than the 2013 team put together all season. But Glencoe-Silver Lake wasn’t exactly an offen- sive monster from the get-go. “You could tell over the first five to 10 minutes that we’re used to playing defense,” said a laughing Otto-Fisher. But as the game went on, “juniors Maddie (Kuehn) and Keisha (Prafke) handled the mid-field and really took charge. They communicat- ed more in that game than their past four years.” Otto-Fisher also said the score could have been even more lopsided, as his girls weren’t quite spot on with ball placement, causing a couple balls to barely miss, or get de- flected. The offense wasn’t the only thing clicking Saturday at Ro- cori. Standout goalie Zoe Christensen only faced one shot all game, as opposed to double digits she saw a season ago. Though it’s early on, Otto- Fisher said “There was a lot of good things they did. “I’m happy with the passing, but we just need to finish a few more plays” offensively. height. Captain Cortney Konen will

have plenty of work to do as a5’3” libero this year after accru-ing over 240 digs last year at theposition. A key to a stout de-fense, Konen said, is communi-cation.

“I’ve learned that we reallyhave to play together as a teamand talk A LOT,” said Konen.

Once they start talking, thegame will become easier Konensaid, since “I feel like I’ve got-ten better at reading the ball, andwe’ve gotten a lot quicker mov-ing to the ball.”

Running the offense onceKonen and the Panthers gettheir digs this year is junior cap-tain Layne Herrmann, who had565 set assists in 2013.

A year older now, Herrmannsaid the nerves of being a varsi-ty setter are no longer with her,and she expects a big year fromherself.

“My goal would be to get1,000 set assists this year,” Her-rmann said, “and to make mysets more consistent to our hit-ters.”

The 5’8” setter is one of thetallest girls on the team, andnoted that this year’s offensewill have to possess more speedto compete.

“Quicker. We need to bequicker because we are a lotshorter than all the other teams,”Herrmann said. “We need to getmore blocking in, too, becausethat will slow up the other of-fense.”

Asked who her favorite team-mate is to set to, Herrmannquickly dismissed the questionwith a laugh and said, “I like toset to everyone. I’ll put it wher-ever they need it.”

Taylor Novak is the No. 2outside hitter behind Kerslake, and turned in 363 digs of herown last season, along with 124kills. She returns as a 5’6” jun-ior, and will take on a biggerrole in Schwirtz’s offense.

Also on the list of returneeswho saw plenty of time last yearis middle hitter Maddy Kalen-berg, who Schwirtz called a“work horse.”

Looking to stuff opposing of-fenses, junior-middle hitter

Erika Ribar has a “knack forblocking” according to the headcoach.

Junior Emily Muetzel shouldalso help out the defense, asSchwirtz said she will “stop atnothing to keep a ball from hit-ting the floor.”

GSL’s first home match wasTuesday, August 26, againstHoward Lake-Waverly-Winst-ed. Kerslake’s accomplishmentof 1,000 digs was recognizedbefore the event.

GSL Tennis Scorecard

By Josh RandtSports Editor

It didn’t take long for HeadCoaches Jeff Delwiche andJann Savre to see some im-provements on the Pantherboys’ and girls’ cross countryteams, after competing at Bay-lor Park against NorwoodYoung America and MayerLutheran/Lester Prairie/HolyTrinity.

Delwiche’s boys took firstwith 19 points, while the girls’52 earned them second.

Though it was an early meetwith only three teams, bothcoaches got to preview andevaluate their current startinglineups.

Each team had runners im-prove on their times from lastyear’s competitions at thecourse, though Delwiche ad-mitted the layout seemed a biteasier this time around.

Glencoe-Silver Lake is nowoff from competition untilThursday, September 4, whenTri-City United hosts its invita-tional meet at Montgomery Na-tional Golf Course at 4 p.m.

Boys“The times are a little mis-

leading. I think it was about100 meters short,” Delwichesaid before adding that theboys’ times for this year wereabout seven or eight minutesfaster. “That’s pretty good —over a minute a runner — andthat’s what we need to win theconference, win the section, and shoot for a decent berth atstate.”

GSL’s top five varsity boysnearly swept spots one throughfive, allowing only NYA’s AlexWischnack to break up theorder with his second-place fin-ish.

Jac Chelman took first with16:36, with Isiah Herout trail-ing just behind in third at16:44.

Brandon Richter and GarretArdolf placed fourth and fifth

with times of 16:45 and 17:46. Michael Schaefer was the

fifth Panther in a row to crossthe finish line when he com-pleted the course in sixth placewith a time of 17:49, just threeseconds behind Ardolf.

The Panthers’ top-five timesshow just how dangerous thislineup can be at full strength.Injuries slowed GSL down attimes last year, especially

Schaefer, who Delwiche said is“going to be a huge part of ourteam this year ... We’re justhoping he can stay healthy.”

Austin Schroepfer and Gar-rett Ober went eighth and ninth, posting times of 18:30 and18:48, as all the varsity boysfinished within the top 10.

GSL’s team total was an as-tounding 19, compared toNYA’s 47, and ML/LP/HT’s102.

“It’s looking really good,”said Delwiche, who mentionedhis lineup is about what he ex-pected. “Jac, Isiah and Brandonare top three. Then we’ve gotMichael (Schaefer) and GarretArdolf, that’s five, and Austin(Schroepfer) and (Garrett) Oberare kind of close to each other. That’s kind of what we thought,as far as rounding out our topseven.”

GirlsThe Panther girls were able

to put two runners inside thetop 10, as Erica Hecksel andTarin Michaelis finished onesecond apart. Hecksel tooksixth with 19:21, and Michaelisseventh with 19:22.

Savre’s runners worked quitewell together in packs, as theother three girls finished 12th,13th, and 14th.

Robin Swift finished with atime of 20:10, while MarlainaChelman was five seconds be-hind her with 20:15. KaylaDeyonge rounded out GSL’stop five with a time of 20:50.

Taylor Venier finished 15thoverall with 21:44, while MarySchmitt closed out GSL’s topseven in 19th place with 23:14.

“It was awesome to see thegrouping as we learn to pushand pull each other,” Savresaid. “It was good to get out ona course to see what each run-ner was capable of achieving inthis early season competition. Now we can look forward andset some individual goals.”

over the two days, whileRachel Rusten and CallieRaduenz split some time atNo. 2 singles, also testingtheir mettle in doubles’ com-petition with teammate EllieLepel, who looks to have oneof those slots locked down.

“I felt good about (No. 1doubles), either with Rustenand Ellie, or Callie and Ellie,”DeCorsey said. “I thoughtthey moved pretty well andwere active.”

The lineup differed quite abit from matchup to matchup,as DeCorsey admitted itwould with the amount of ten-nis being played.

Lindsey Wedin saw a lot oftime at No.3 singles, andbounced back with two wins

Thursday after going 1-2 onTuesday.

“She had a good week,”said DeCorsey. “She’s hittingthe ball and moving the ballbetter than she did last year.

“We’ve got to hit balls andtake them seriously. We justdidn’t take care of that part.”

Now the Panthers moveinto the conference schedule, starting yesterday (Tuesday),GSL traveled to New Praguebefore a non-conferencematch at home with St. Peteron Friday. Annandale andOrono then visit Glencoe onSept. 2 for a Wright CountyConference triangular at 3p.m.

Exactly like last year, I im-mediately got to work implod-ing my score by making easyholes look like they shouldhave been marked as par fives.

Two holes into the finalround, I found myself againtrying to stave off my veryloud and angry thoughts.

My choice of distraction lastyear was Journey’s “Don’tStop Believing,” which onlyled me to believe I shouldn’tparticipate in this tournamentagain.

I knew I had to dig deep intomy music-crammed brain forsomething that would actuallydistract me from the tailspin Iwas currently in the midst of.

Slowly, in the background ofmy mind, I heard that ridicu-lous ’90s sound as ScottStapp’s voice trickled throughmy brain.

“Hold me now, I’m six feet

from the edge and I’m think-ing, maybe six feet, ain’t SOFAR DOWN!”

Creed is one my guiltiest ofpleasures. It’s the type ofmusic that’s so bad it’s beauti-ful, and it acts like a securityblanket for my ears.

When I really began to de-cline and realized there was nocoming back, “My OwnPrison” consoled me internally.

My 40-hole score of 138was only about four to fivestrokes away from the middleof the pack, and had I played inthe intermediate division Iwould have took home somecash.

But that’s alright. Themoney went to some much de-serving players, and I onceagain served as a template ofwhat not to do when it comesto this event to some of thenewcomers.

In all seriousness, this is anawesome event. Only a hand-ful of people came out to pre-vious tournaments, and thisyear attracted 36 players overfive divisions.

The new course kept playersactive for over five hours onSunday, and the multiple teepads allowed for two different20-hole layouts.

Glencoe is truly lucky tohave such a beautiful newcourse, and an active commu-nity of players to put on such awell-organized event.

A big thanks goes out toKenny Fillbrandt, MattPieschke, and Andrew Hansonfor putting together and run-ning the tournament.

Now get out to Oak Leafand let your discs fly. Nextyear’s Rusty Chains Classic isless than a year away.

and amassed 65 tackles andfive sacks as a senior.

The loss of talent is nothingnew for Tschimperle, who’scoached some very skilledplayers in his six seasonsleading the program.

“With the great coachingstaff I have, we take kids thatwe think can be the most suc-cessful at a position, and putthem in a spot that’s going tohelp us be successful,”Tschimperle said calmly.“That formula has reallyworked in the history ofGSL.”

Leading this team as seniorcaptains are quarterbackKeaton Anderson, tight endTanner Grack, cornerbackBennett Bielke, and defensiveend Zach Jungclaus.

Anderson will be countedon heavily in his fourth year atquarterback, especially after a2013 campaign that resultedin 885 yards on 128 carries –third most on the team behindStuedemann and Clouse. He’llalso look to improve upon his53.1 completion percentagefrom last year, when he threwnine touchdowns to five inter-ceptions. Grack should helpthat cause once again, as hecaught a team high 10 passeslast year for 147 yards andfour touchdowns.

“There’s a lot of pressure onme this year, losing a lot ofour backs (from last year),”Anderson said. “I’ve got to bea bit more of a leader.”

Grack was absent from Sat-urday’s scrimmage with an in-jury, and it was a bit notice-able. Anderson’s first pass ofthe year was intercepted afterthe receiver stopped runninghis route, putting the quarter-back’s pass directly into thehands of a North safety.

Anderson joked that was agood way to start out the year, saying, “I do want to startwith that and get it out of theway!”

Despite the miscue, GSLimproved over the scrimmage, and Grack has been cleared toplay in Friday’s opener. Whilethe tight end was on the side-lines Saturday, he took somenotes and said, “We can al-ways work on pass protection, and knowing the plays better.”

The only players returningwho regularly started on of-fense last year, besides Grackand Anderson, are offensivelinemen Austin Maynard andAlex Romano.

Defensively, Bielke willhelp patrol the backfield andsupport the run, while Jung-claus and the D line look topressure and disrupt opposingoffenses.

Bielke, who had 35 tacklesand one interception last year, said this year’s squad is look-ing for shutouts, and that thedefense needs to help out itscounterpart with a turnover ortwo.

“We want to try and get themomentum on our side defen-sively,” said Bielke. “If wecan get a big stop and havethe offense go out with a lot ofmomentum, that’s a big deal.”

At 6’3”, 185 pounds, Jung-claus will be responsible forsetting the edge on the defen-sive line and rushing the pass-er. Last year he only recordedone tackle, but was all overthe field Saturday.

“I thought we did reallygood against the run,” saidJungclaus, “but with the passwe definitely need to put a lit-tle more pressure on the quar-terback. But I think that willcome along this year.”

The defense will also bene-fit from returning underclass-men like junior safety TeddyPetersen and junior lineback-ers Mason Goettl and TristanWeber. Senior defensive tack-le Chris Lemke will anchorthe middle of the line.

Petersen led the team with68 tackles last year, and alsohad one interception. Goettl

and Weber combined for 65tackles, while Lemke cloggedthe middle and produced 21tackles.

Though it will take somework, Tschimperle and hiscaptains said the goals thisyear are the same as they’vealways been: win the confer-ence, win the section, andmake a run at state. One ofthose goals holds a little moreweight this year, as it’s thefinal year of the Wright Coun-ty Conference before shiftingto the district format.

“It’s the last year of the con-ference,” said Tschimperle,“and we want that conferencechampionship.”

Standing in the way is abrutal WCC schedule, espe-cially through the first fourgames, where GSL hostsOrono, travels to newcomerNew Prague, and hostsHutchinson before visitingNew London-Spicer.

The biggest key to attainingtheir goals and comingthrough that gauntlet of aschedule, Tschimperle said, isnot giving up the big play.

“You look at our losses lastyear, and we lost by the bigplay,” said Tschimperle. Butthe answer isn’t in some newdefensive scheme or offensivestrategy. Instead, Tschimperlereiterated what he said hasbeen the mind set for the past15 years, “It’s not who weplay, it’s how we play. That’sall we can control.”

The season starts Friday at7 p.m. in Glencoe with par-ents’ night, when the OronoSpartans and the Panthers kickoff the final season of theWCC.
