D Keelan 3 C Breadling conv) d Nightcliff 20 (J Forrester Y Namabia H Lowe J McLean tries. K Nicholls 2 conv). DARWIN rugby league fans got a preview of the 2011 grand final at Richardson Park last night. Palmerston beat Nightcliff 24-20 in a game that had everything, including some big hits, intercept tries, pres- sure goalkicking and crunch- ing runs. ‘‘That was finals footy, mate, the boys knew about it when we spoke before the game and it’s exactly what we got,’’ said Palmerston coach Merg Mikaelian. ‘‘It was a good grinding win, Nightcliff was up for the game and playing for second spot . ‘‘They’ve been renowned for that (hard footy) for years and have always had big strong forwards and a tough defence.’’ A fired up Nightcliff ran to a 10-0 lead midway through the first half after tries to Joe Forrester and Hayden Lowe and looked capable of upsett- ing Palmerston’s 13-game winning streak and 50th birthday celebrations. But the class of Alex John- son and Quincy Tootooulugia and superb goalkicking by Daniel Keelan got the Raiders back into the game. Converted tries to Johnson and Will Beers had the Raiders back in front at half-time. Nightcliff came out full of fire to score a try through Yuwana Namabia six min- utes into the second half. But it was Palmerston who scored next through quick hands for Chuck Norris to cross over out wide, a lead they never again relinquished. In the other games, Litch- field eased past bottom side South Darwin 64-6 and third- placed Brothers moved level on points with Nightcliff fol- lowing their comprehensive 44-18 win over University. Bad boy Jennings’ ticket to apology Hopefully they all turn up to see him play next week and he has a blinder PENRITH supremo Phil Gould says having Michael Jennings buy tickets for fans was the best way for the suspended star to make amends to the people he let down most. Jennings handed out 2000 tickets – worth an estimated $44,000 – to the Panthers’ game against the Warriors next weekend at halftime dur- ing Friday night’s 32-18 loss to the Wests Tigers. He had earlier been stood down from the match for ar- riving at training on Thurs- day under the influence of al- cohol, his second drinking- related incident this year. ‘‘I didn’t know what to do with him,’’ Gould said. ‘‘I just found the whole incident extraordinary and we sat down and discussed the damage that had been done, both to the club and his reputation. ‘‘(We wanted) to come up with not so much a punish- ment, but something that would say sorry to those kids who save up to come and watch him play and the parents who save up to buy a jersey with his number on the back. ‘‘He’s a quality player and he’s a good human being but he’s made this slip-up. ‘‘We just thought it was a good idea for him to get around last night and give something back to those kids. ‘‘Hopefully they all turn up to see him play next week and he has a blinder.’’ Gould said he’d spoken to Jennings about Sydney Roos- ters serial bad boy Todd Carney’s latest episode in an attempt to get through to him.
