Dear Parents and Friends

The annual St Finbarr’s School Fete was very successful again this year. This event is certainly a credit to the cur-

rent P&F committee, our parents, both present and past, school staff and the people of the Quilpie Community who

support the fete each year.

An event such as this does take a great deal of organisation and I am very proud to work with our families who pull

everything together to make the night entertaining for the children and families of Quilpie. The children thoroughly

enjoyed the laser tag, games, lucky dips and face painting. Ben Hall’s bubble machine was a great surprise for every-

one, particularly the children, who delighted in slipping and sliding in the soapy froth that emanated from the mouth

of the crazy creation.

The Mystery Holiday this year was won by Bob and Lorraine Hall. Bob and Lorraine, as past parents and now grand-

parents of the school, have been wonderful supporters of the school and the fete for many years.

I would like to thank Ben and Jean Hall for their organisation leading up to the fete, all of our parents who helped on

the night, as well as Jennie Anderson, Courtney Bartlett and John and Esther Thallon who also helped with stalls and

activities. We really appreciate the efforts of Debbie Hall for seeking sponsors for the mystery holiday and of course,

Chris Paulsen for organising the holiday prizes. Our appreciation also extends to Snr Constable Mark Baker with the

Blue-light video games and to Mike Castles and Jamie Wensley for providing the music for the night.

This term we are taking advantage of the camera technology supplied to us by the University of Southern Queens-

land. We have been linking up with Year 12 students from Emmanual College who have choreographed a dance

for our students to perform at the end of year Speech and Awards evening. This project was initially created during

the visit by the Emmanual College students at the end of Term 2. Also this term we have employed professional sing-

er and instructor, Cathy Drummond, to provide weekly singing lessons to our students via Skype. Cathy is well

known in the area as she has spent much of her life in Charleville and has performed at many functions in the area

over the years. Year 3/4 students from St Finbarr’s School in Ashgrove also met with our year 3-6 class last week as

part of their geography unit, investigating the impact of drought in rural and remote areas. It will also be a wonder-

ful opportunity for Marcus to meet some of the students who will be attending Marist College Ashgrove, where he

will be boarding for high school next year.

During the last 3 years we have been very fortunate to have Stewart Sloane as our Instrumental Music teacher. Not

only is he a very talented musician, skilled in many woodwind and brass instruments, but he is also a wonderful

teacher who has motivated and inspired our students and lead the Quilpie Band to great success. Stewart will be

moving to the Gold Coast next year to further pursue his teaching career. Stuart has certainly brought ‘alive’ many of

the local social events from our school fete to polo events, race meetings, and even weddings. He will certainly be

missed by the whole community. Stewart has thoroughly enjoyed his time in the Charleville area but is also looking

forward to following another passion of orchestral performance. Last week Stewart conducted assessments on the

Year 3 students to identify a suitable instrument for each of them should they wish to join the Instrumental Music

program next year.

I am currently at Principals Forum in Toowoomba but look forward to seeing everyone on my return next week.

amazing tuckshop Ladies, Sarah and Ange who created a seriously spooky themed tuckshop.

Including Severed hand punch, spooky cake pops, ghost biscuits, spider cakes and many more deliciously wicked items for lunch. The students got a great thrill

vice at Bob Young Park. Please assemble at the park at

10.30am in preparation for commencement at 10.45am.

Students are asked to be in full school uniform including hat,

White socks and Black shoes.

St Finbarr’s Ashgrove

Using the equipment provided to us by the

University of Southern Qld, Year 3/4 Stu-

dents from St Finbarr's Ashgrove met with

our 3-6 Class. As part of their Geography

unit, the students discussed and investi-

gated the effects of drought in rural and

remote areas and Communities.

Finnies friends in action

The Finnie’s Friends in Action Group recently raised $30 for the Daniel Morcombe Foundation. More importantly the day commemorated the life of Daniel Morcombe and emphasised the importance of safety awareness amongst our students.

The final activity of our Finnies Friends in Action Group will be the annual St Vincent de Paul Christmas appeal. It is a tradition at the school that toys are donated as part of the end of year awards evening which we then pass on to the St Vincent de Paul society to distribute to children of families in need this Christmas. Small gifts for boys and girls (without wrap-ping) can be dropped at the school before the 4th December.

APRE - Remembrance Day & All Saints and All Souls

This Sunday is Remembrance Day. This is a day to commemorate the end of World War II.

At 11 am on 11th November 1918 the guns on the Western Front fell silent after more than

four years of continuous warfare. Although Remembrance Day falls on the weekend this year

we would encourage all students to attend the service to begin at 10.45 am. Please ensure

that students are in full summer uniform including white socks and black shoes.

We also Celebrated All Saint and All Souls day last week at the Church. During this ceremony

we gave thanks and celebrated the memory of those we have loved and lost.

The End of Year School mass will be held on Sunday

25th November at 6 pm.

Prep - 2 News Welcome to week 5!

This week in English we have been reading the traditional and fractured fairy tale of Little Red Riding Hood

to compare and contrast the sequence of events, the characteristics of characters and the language features

used. The students are thoroughly enjoying reading the fractured fairy tales to see how the Author has por-

trayed the characters to the well-known traditional stories. Next week, the students will begin their English

assessment of creating a fractured fairy-tale ending to Goldilocks and the Three Bears. They will have the

opportunity to plan their stories by using film strips and story maps to assist in their writing. Once their

writing is finished, the students will create a digital story of their fractured fairy tale on an iPad using the

app ‘Stop Motion’.

In Religion the students have been exploring key words within the bible and connecting these to prayer. We

have been learning and reading the Hail Mary and how we can use this prayer to remember and honour

Mary through praying. The key words that the students found within the Hail Mary prayer were blessed,

hail, Lord, women, God, Jesus, grace and womb.

Thankyou to all the students who brought items in from home last week for Science to show how sound can

be produced and describe whether it was a low or high sound. Some items that were brought in were very

interesting!
