of monastic worship, which dates to the earliest form of Christian worship. Archbishop Thomas Cranmer (1489-1556) merged the two monastic services of Vespers and Compline to create the form of the service we are using today. It has been largely unchanged since the introduction of the English Prayer Book of 1549. In this worship the choir and rector serve as the worship leaders. Evensong is different from other forms of worship. In that it requires worshiping by listening, while the choir and rector offer music and liturgy on behalf of the congregation through the music and lessons. There is no Eucharist. This service is offered to enrich our worship program and does not replace our Sunday morning service.

Interfaith DialogueSunday, December 3rd, at Calvary Lutheran Church at 3:00 p.m. You are invited to “Just Ask: Listening to our Jewish and Muslim neighbors” – an interfaith conversation. Join us to listen, learn and share our stories, at Calvary Lutheran Church on Old Frederick Road.

Interfaith Dialogue At the Diocesan Center Fear of the other seems to have found a permanent home in our world. So where does faith fit? Does fear of God translate to faith? On Nov. 1, 7:00-8:30 p.m., at the Diocesan Center, a diverse panel of religious practitioners including Rabbi Nina Beth Cardin; the Rev. Dr. Wakoh Hickey, Buddhist priest; Imam Tariq Najee-ullah; Bishop Eugene Sutton; and others will share their insights. For more information see the Diocesan web-site - episcopalmaryland.org

CROP WalkFor nearly half a century, CROP Hunger Walks have ensured that more people worldwide have access to nutritious, sustainable food and water sources. On September 24 about 50 people from St. Paul’s, St. James Episcopal, Prospect UMC, Calvary UMC, St. Andrew’s Presbyterian and Marven Chapel all participated in the Mount Airy CROP Walk. It was a beautiful day, sunny and hot! We gathered at St. James, sang some songs, prayed for those we were walking for and headed off down Main Street. We were greeted at Calvary UMC with water and support. Then the hike back up (literally) Main Street, back to St. James. We carried signs and hopefully brought some attention to our cause. The event has raised close to $3,000 for Church World Services/CROP, and 25% of what we raised will go locally to Mount Airy Net. We can’t thank our fellow parishioners enough for all your support!!

It is beginning to look a lot like Christmas!!

Empower-A-Child

Please bring in a Christmas card for Shakirah as soon as possible. Cards need to be mailed to her by November 5 to arrive in Uganda before

the

school’s Christmas break! We have sponsored Shakirah through Empower-A-Child, learn more about them here; www.empower-a-child.org . Shakirah lives in Kampala, Uganda. Becky Wilcher met her when she visited Uganda last year. Thank you!!

Christmas/Angel Tree Gift Program

We are all set with our partnership this year with the Carroll County Salvation Army Angel Tree Program. We have requested the names of 15 Angels for us to provide gifts for this year. We will put out the gift tag “Angels” as soon as we have them. All gifts need to be new and unwrapped and returned to the Church by December 3 with the tag attached.

If you or your family would like to do more for those in our area around the holidays, the Salvation Army also has a Thanksgiving Food Basket program, Stuff a Stocking program and an Adopt-a-Family Program. Please contact the Westminster location of the Salvation Army for more information at 410-876-9358.

There are also programs through Mount Airy Net to provide food and gifts to local residents from Thanksgiving to Christmas. Please contact them for more information via email [email protected] or call 301-829-0472.

Thank you so much for keeping the joy of Christmas alive for those less fortunate!!!

St. Pauls’ Thanksgiving Eve

The Thanksgiving Eve service will be on Wednesday, November 22nd at 7:00 p.m. The Rev. Alistair So will be the preacher and celebrant. Following the service, there will be a pie social. The pie sign-up sheet can be found on the Parish Hall table. Let St. Paul’s parish family gather to give thanks for all of our many blessings.

Friends Helping Friends

St. Paul’s participated in Boscov’s “Friends Helping Friends” day on Tuesday, October 17th. This was very successful for St. Paul’s ~ we raised $240.00. Many thanks to Etta Lee Spaulding who sold tickets at the 9:00 service and to Lee Hajek and Joanne Honsberger for selling tickets at the Westminister Boscov’s on that Tuesday. Again, many thanks to all – your help is greatly appreciated.

Church Offering Envelopes

If you would like a box of weekly offering envelopes for 2018 and did not have them this year, please let our treasurer, Linda Sharp know.

Advent Wreath

We will be using our lovely hanging Advent Wreath for the seasons of Advent and Christmas. The first Sunday of Advent is December

3rd. If you would like to help underwrite the cost of the greens and candles which is about $80.00, please call the church office by December 3rd. One person or several people can help with the cost. This can be given as a memorial, in thanksgiving or as a donation.

Our sincere sympathy

Is extended to Pat Marquis and her family on the death of her husband Al. Al died on Saturday. October 7th. Al and Pat were very active in the many activities at St. Paul’s. The funeral service was on Saturday, October 14th at the Church of the Messiah, Harford Road, Baltimore, where they were married 61 years ago.

May he rest in peace and perpetual light shine upon him.

Scrip Gift Cards

Remember to order your Scrip gift cards. We are creatures of habit. Once we get in the habit of regularly buying gift cards, we are amazed at how convenient it is to help the church and ourselves at the same time. For example, all of us buy food and gas. It is an easy fundraiser. Plan ahead - before we know it the holidays will be here. See Pete McIntosh and stock up on the cards of your choice.

Stephen Ministry

The Before and After PeopleYou know Stephen Ministers as the “after” caregivers. After the phone call you hoped you’d never get; after the funeral; after the pink slip. Sometimes “after” can be “during” a situation. During an estrangement; during a diagnosed physical or mental illness; during the use of drugs, by a relative or friend. All of these can cause one to grieve in the “now.” Stephen Ministers, here at St. Paul’s, along with Calvary’s Stephen Ministers are available to help you, or someone you know, both before and/or after incidents of loss or difficulty. This distinctively Christian ministry of care is always available for you. Our ministry is a one-to-one confidential relationship between the minister (the caregiver) and you (the care receiver). Confidentiality is

promised. Please contact Lee Hajek, 410-442-1641 for more information.

St. Paul’s Thrift Shop

Helpers are still needed to sort and restock on Monday and Wednesday mornings; help carry Mission bags out to the shed on Wednesday mornings, as you are available; and volunteers to sell in the shop at least one day per month on a regular basis.Shop is open Wednesday 11:00 – 2:00, Thursday, Friday and Saturday 11:30 -3:00.
