of all classes of molluscs.

This book is a complete cata-

logue of this type collection.

The authors do not give

descriptions, only the scien-

tific names, synonyms, type

locations, and references to

the original descriptions of

all mentioned species. Many

species are illustrated by the

original drawings, others by

b/w photographs which are

specially made for this cata-

logue. References and an in-

This interesting book deals

with all kind of dangerous

marine animals: only a small

part (pages 46-57) is devoted

to the molluscs. The authors

give details about the dan-

gerous animals: where they

live, why they are dangerous

and what can be done to

avoid biting or poisoning.

The most dangerous mol-

luscs are the Conidae in par-

ticular Conus geographusand Conus textile, and the

cephalopodsbelonging to the

genus Hapalochlaena, the

Ring Octopus. The book de-

scribes also the symptoms

when you are bitten or poi-soned and what can be done

about it (first aid). In Dutch.

This guide introducés 220 of

the most familiar species

which inhabit the beaches,

shallow waters and intertidal

areas along the northwestern

coast of America from Cali-

fornia in the south to the

Arctic in the north. 110 bi-

valves (among which is one

brachiopod), 93 gastropods,

2 tusk shells and 15 chitons.

One part (the colour guide)

gives reasonable colour pho-

tographs of the species with

size, range and habitat. The

other part (the black-and-

white guide) gives the same

details but also descriptionsand some comments. A spe-

cial section is devoted to the

siphons of some bivalves

with a siphon identification

key. A checklist, references,

glossary and index completethe book.

In this book one of the

authors of the "Guide to

Worldwide Cowries" divides

the genus Zoila into five

groups: decipiens-group,

venusta-group, marginata-

group, roselli-gxoup and

friendii- group, with 11 spe-

cies, 8 subspecies and sever-

al forms and variations (the

latter two without taxonomi-

cal value). The author brings

a revised approach to evalu-

ate "the systematic units

'species' and 'subspecies'",which approach as well as

the interpretation may be

considered controversial by

some according to LindsayT. Groves in the foreword.

After some introductory

chapters the systematic part

gives a description of the

shells of all (sub)species and

forms, details about the dis-

tribution (all are from west

or south Australia), habitat

and size range. No details

about the animals. A discus-

sion is followed by refer-

ences and distribution maps.

Recent literature is included.

The second part of the book

consists of colour plates with

nice digital photographs of

the shells which mainly

belong to the private collec-

tion of the author. Some

plates should have a lighter

background because of the

dark (nearly black) colour of

the depicted specimens.

was published in 1989. Some

names and captions were

changed, new photographs

and additional information

are included. The many arti-

cles on the family Cypraei-

dae, Ovulidae and Triviidae

during the last decade have

been added. Very nice pho-

tographs.

«Ornaments of the sea » is a

catalogue of an exhibition of

(old) objects (clothing, uten-

sils and jewels) made of or

decorated with products of

the sea: red coral, shells,

pearls, silk of the sea (bys-

sus), purple, fish leather, tor-

toise-shells, sea ivory, am-

bergris and fur of sea mam-

mals. All objects, belongingto different museums and pri-

vate collections, are illustrat-

ed in colour. The book gives

information about the history

and the use of these objects.Some were of importance in

religion, others in military,but many of them are jewels,often with a social function

The European species of the

Muricidae are described and

illustrated. 60 species are

dealt with of which eight

were introduced from else-

where into Europe. The

author gives of each species

shell description, synonymy,

a distributionmap and addi-

tional remarks. The recent

species in the genus Hexa-

plex are mentioned separate-

ly. In all 526 pictures are

given of which many are in

colour. One species and one

subspecies are described as

new to science. The book

ends with a large bibliogra-

phy.

worked on this tremendous

book. The text is in Japanese

and English. This book deals

with all classes of the Mol-

lusca which occur in Japan-

ese waters. Each species is

described briefly, usuallywith details about the habitat

and distribution and with

some synonymy. The sys-

tematic part is the most

important one with colour

pictures of nearly all the

5106 (!) species dealt with.

Often more than one picture

per species are given, some-

times with a photograph of

the living animal. An index

completes the book, without

any doubt a record in depict-

ing so many species in

colour in one book.

the Kerama Islands, part of

the Ryukyu Archipelago. It

is evident that many years'

enthusiasm for for sea slugslies at the bottom of this

colourfulbooklet. The text is

only in Japanese. The many

photographs (often more

than four per page) of the

slugs, which are ordered sys-

tematically, bear the scientif-

ic name, the location and the

size ofeach depicted species

in English. A nice booklet

for those who love sea slugs.
