About the Competition:

The AmeriCares India Health Angels’ Competition invites students interested in the health delivery for India

to come up with innovative solutions that can help develop a robust program for Universal Healthcare in our

Country. Such ideas shall be forwarded to the Planning Commission, Govt of India so as to be evaluated for

helping shape their final policy.

Eligibility: Students in India (current and those who have passed out on/after 1st October 2010) from medical,

nursing, pharmacy, business, public health and related streams.

Competition: Find innovative solutions to universal healthcare delivery in India.

Prizes: Prizes will be given to the top three winners as follows:

1st Prize: Rs 25,000/-

2nd Prize: Rs 15,000/-

3rd Prize: Rs 10,000/-

Case Framework: Your team is in charge of one district in India with a population of 5 lakhs (you can make

your plan for any district in India). There is one district hospital and 20 primary health centers. Your budget is

Rs 50 crores per year. How will you plan to delivery universal healthcare to the people under your care over

the next five years?

Application Process: Interested students are required to make a team of two or three members. They should

submit an abstract of max 500 words (plus maximum one table and one figure) by 28th February 2011.

Shortlisting Process: Those abstracts that are found suitable by a screening committee shall be intimated by 7th

March 2011 by email. These teams shall require to come to Mumbai on Saturday 2nd April 2011 to the Best

Health Practices Conclave for the presentation, evaluation and award ceremony. They should be ready with

poster to be displayed (size will be provided in the intimation email) as well as powerpoint slides for oral

presentation (based on the top five posters selected by the jury). Certificates will be given to all teams who

come on 2nd April 2011 to make the poster presentation.

b. 9.00 am Inaugural Address by Keynote Speaker

c. 9.30 am to 12.30 pm Presentations (SOH categories 1 to 5)

d. 12.30 pm to 1.30 pm Judging of Posters by Jury

e. 1.30 pm to 3.30 pm Presentations (SOH categories 6 to 10)

f. 3.30 pm to 4.30 pm Oral Presentation by selected posters (max 5)

b. Nominee High Tea (5.30 pm to 6.30 pm): Just prior to the Awards Ceremony, shortlisted nominees,

competition students and potential funders (CSR and high networth individuals) will interact informally in a

relaxed atmosphere. A wall shall also display highlights of each shortlisted nominees’ programmatic

initiatives and competition students’ solutions.

c. Awards Ceremony (6.30 pm to 10.00 pm): All invited shortlisted nominees from each category and the

students selected for oral presentations shall be publicly recognized and honored with certificates. In

addition, the winners in each of the categories shall receive a trophy and/or prize alongwith the cheque in a

glitzy ceremony in the presence of luminaries.

Competition Rules:

• Applications are to be completed by sending the abstracts in the prescribed format given below,

including details of the team members and undertakings.

• All entries are to be received by AmeriCares India office by 28th February 2011 .

• Competition organizers and team will scrutinize entries for meeting eligibility criteria & to perform due diligence (comprising of representatives from organizations like Sion Hospital, Tata Institute of Social Sciences [TISS], Symbiosis [SCMHDR], pharmacy college and KPMG).

• Shortlisted teams will have to bear the expenses for their travel and accommodation. They will be provided with free registration, meals as well as complementary entry to the award ceremony and dinner.

• All decisions by the competition organizers and team are final and binding. No disputes shall be entertained.

• In case of any disagreement within the team, the decision of KPMG shall be final and binding.

About AmeriCares India:

Our Work in India

AmeriCares India Foundation was registered in India in the year 2006 and currently operates in nineteen

states across India, and has already reached more than ten million people with greater than USD $48 million

worth of medical aid. Through strong partnerships with local governmental and nongovernmental

organizations, AmeriCares India supports clinics, schools, hospitals and rural health organizations and

responds to needs determined through the following core programmatic initiatives:

1. Disaster/Emergency Response : Disaster relief & disaster preparedness training programs

• Leh-Ladakh floods; Haiti earthquake; Cyclone Aila in West Bengal; Kosi floods in Bihar

• Disaster Preparedness workshops in Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Kolkata, Thane, Nagpur

2. Medical Assistance: Supplement charity hospital access to critical care medicines and supplies

• More than 3.5 crores of free medicines donated to affiliate institutions in the past year

• Warehouse in Bhiwandi delivered 250 shipments to 53 affiliate partners across nineteen states in India

3. Healthcare Service Expansion: Operate medical camps in slums and tribal areas and run school-based

health promotion programs (education, screening, treatment)

• Daily mobile medical clinic program in 20 community slums of Andheri East

• Rural medical camps in Thane, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar

• Oral hygiene and anti-tobacco project targeting all 1,393 Municipal schools in Mumbai

4. AmeriCares Global Regional Hub: Serve as regional platform supporting AmeriCares Global Programs

and Emergency Response (medicine sourcing, distribution hub)

• Shipments of essential medicines to international partners in Africa, the Middle East and Asia

• Emergency response dispatches to Haiti earthquake, Cyclone Nargis in Myanmar, Cholera in Zimbabwe

On 6th November, 2009, AmeriCares India received the I-ACE Award for being the best NGO in India.

The award was given on the 40th Anniversary celebration of the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce

(IACC).

The awards ceremony in 2010 was held at the ITC Grand Central in Mumbai on 6th March 2010:

The 2011 Spirit of Humanity Awards will be held on 2nd April 2011 in Mumbai. There is a publicity campaign

involving complete media support for the event.
