Second Sunday in Ordinary Time There's a sheep farm just down the road from where I live. The herd is out
grazing in the pasture almost every day, and when I go to the grocery
store I pass by the field and see them wandering around. Cheese is an
important agricultural product in my part of the world, and right now there
is a great shortage of sheep's milk for quality artisanal cheeses. Part of the
problem is that even though there is increased lamb production in the
United States, they're not making it to maturity because the price for
slaughtered lambs is so high. Australia and New Zealand are exporting
less to the US, and so domestic production is going to slaughter rather
than being raised for the milk.
Yes, the lamb is led to slaughter. And even though our celebration of
Easter is months away, already the Gospel sounds the theme of the
direction in which we are heading. We hear John the Baptist describe
Jesus as the Lamb of God in today's Gospel. We use that same imagery
when we plead with the Lamb of God in the litany that we sing at Mass
during the breaking of the bread. But do we really consider what it means
when we call upon Jesus by that title?
In the Book of Exodus, it is the Lamb of God whose blood marks the
way for the angel of death to pass over the places where the blood is seen.
As Lamb of God, Jesus shed his blood, marking all who are baptized in
his name with the Holy Spirit, which John the Baptist describes in today's
Gospel. Sin and death have no power over us because we are saved by the
blood of the Lamb. When we plead, "Lamb of God, have mercy on us,"
we acknowledge that Jesus gave his life for us. And when we eat his flesh
and drink his blood, we join ourselves to him.

THREE-MINUTE LITURGICAL CATECHESIS Article 1: Why Are We Here?
These short reflections on the Mass were originally inspired by the late Pope John Paul II’s encouragement to us to engage in “that mystagogical catechesis so dear to the Fathers of the Church, by which the faithful are helped to understand the meaning of the liturgy's words and actions, to pass from its signs to the mystery which they contain, and to enter into that mystery in every aspect of their lives.” [Apostolic Letter inaugurating the Year of the Eucharist, October 2004, Mane Nobiscum Domine (Stay with us, Lord)]. In that spirit these articles are offered to provide helpful material for brief reflections on the Eucharist. These materials are designed to take less than three minutes to read through, (even read out loud at the end of Mass, which is the way many parishes used them during the Year of the Eucharist) so they won't delay us long from other things on our schedules. These reflections are intended to give a bit of information about the Mass and a bit of inspiration that will help us live the Eucharist all week long, or in the Pope’s words above “to enter into that mystery in every aspect of their lives.”
Why are we here? We begin today with a basic question for all of us: Why are we here? Why do we gather week after week for this liturgy we call the Mass? There are probably a lot of answers to that question. Some of us come because it's a habit. Others come because they are grateful for God’s gifts. And many of us come for several of those reasons combined. More basic than all of those reasons, however, we all come because God has called us here. It was God who chose us to be members of the Church. It was God who called us to share God's own life through baptism. It was God who called us to carry on the mission of Christ in the world today. We come in response to God's call. And we come for Eucharist, which comes from the Greek word for thanksgiving. We gather here each week to give God thanks and praise. Sometimes we may forget that. It's easy to focus on what we hope to get out of coming to church rather than on giving thanks for what God has already given us. The most important thing we find when we gather here is the presence of Christ himself. Christ reveals his presence to us in various ways. He is present in our very gathering, living in each of us who are his tabernacles. He is present as the leader of our worship. He speaks directly to us when God's word is proclaimed in our midst. He offers us his own body and blood as our food and drink so that we will be more closely united with him and with one another. We come because Christ is here and because he calls us. Through baptism we all became members of his body, and we come here to remember who we are. Here we are reunited with one another and with him who is our head. And when we leave here, we go forth carrying Christ with us, taking him to our world that is in such need of his presence and his love. He teaches us and feeds us here to strengthen us to be Christ-bearers all week. Let us go forth from this place to love and serve the Lord. © 2004 Lawrence E. Mick. Revised 2006. ON THE LIGHTER SIDE “Your Honor,” the defense attorney protested, “I want to bring to your attention how unfair it is for my client to be accused of theft. He arrived in New York City a week ago and barely knows his way around. What’s more, he only speaks a few words of English.”
The judge looked at the defendant and asked, “How much English can you speak?” The defendant looked up and replied, “Give me your wallet!”
On the First Sunday of Advent this year — November 27, 2011 — the Universal Church will adopt a new Roman Missal to use for the prayers of the Mass. In order to prepare the faithful for all the changes, there will be many opportunities for ministers as well as people in the pew to learn about the theology of the Mass as well as the changes that will take place. As a beginning, the vast majority of the parishes in the Diocese of Gary will be running a series of articles in our parish bulletins labeled “Three-Minute Catechesis.” The first in series begins this weekend. I hope these will help you in your preparation to embrace a new text of prayer at our Masses at the end of November.

Living Stewardship Second Sunday of Ordinary Time
The prophet Isaiah places all his hope and trust in the Lord. He is
a servant on a mission, a sign of great hope. Tomorrow we
celebrate the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a prophet of
hope also. He inspired African Americans and many others in the
nation with his preaching about justice. Prophets of hope are still
needed. As disciples and servants of Jesus we need to continue
speaking on behalf of justice, giving a voice of hope for the
hopeless in our community and the world.

pray together for an end to all abortions (and other issues
against life) on that 38th anniversary. Please come.

Munster’s Living History Museum Comes to
St. Thomas More School
Plan to Attend This
Year’s
Open
House A unique educational experience came directly to the classroom of St. Thomas More School
fourth grade students in December, thanks to the Munster Junior Historical Society.
Founded by former teacher, Dr. Louise Chickie-Wolfe, the Munster Junior Historical
Society brings the chronicle of Munster’s history into the classroom via an interactive play
where students enact our town’s story. Twenty-five of Munster’s most influential citizens
are depicted by the students as their ―parts‖ illustrate how each of these individuals shaped
the Munster landscape from a Dutch farming community to the town that we know today.
Students, dressed in period clothes while depicting their character, picked from ―the field
trip in a trunk‖, as Dr. Chickie-Wolfe explains her traveling museum. Out of the trunk came
beards, antique eyeglasses, robes, aprons, and wooden shoes, all transforming the students
into individuals of a time gone-by.
In preparation of this enlightening and fun experience, teachers readied the students by
assigning related vocabulary words. Students knew their character ahead of time, but only
received their script moments before they were to ―perform‖.
A huge thank you to Dr. Chickie-Wolfe and the adult volunteers of the Munster Junior
Historical Society for bringing this wonderful program to our school. The students’
enthusiasm for this innovative learning encounter was overwhelming.
