For too many years now, the church hasbeen far too focused on getting "members"and not focused enough on making

"disciples." Jesus said, "Go and make disciples of all nations"not "church members of all nations." Don't get me wrong,

church membership is important and we practice ourdiscipleship as part of a local congregation. But when it's allsaid and done, we are called to be "disciples of JesusChrist." Recently, I came across an article by Anthony Robin-son on the Alban Institute website that articulates this subjectbeautifully. It is titled "This Thing called Church: What Is ItReally?" (http://www.alban.org/conversation.aspx?id=2098).Robinson makes a strong case:

The point is not membership. The church does not haveclients, members, or consumers of goods and services. The point is discipleship. The church exists to form and

sustain individuals and a people who are followersof Jesus Christ, who are his disciples. Rather thanbuying into a consumer model of the church, where thecustomer is king and the church simply meets customers'needs, the church does more; the church redefines ourtrue needs. The church transforms people according tothe life and pattern revealed by God in Jesus Christ. Itunites them with others who are committed to this wayof life.

To put this another way: what's the point of being amember of a church if you are not growing in your faith,

growing in your spiritual life, and becoming more like Christeach and every day? One of the reasons I love the name ofour denomination, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ),is that it reminds us of exactly what we are called tobe - disciples of Jesus Christ in the twenty-first century. Weare called to take the teachings and commandments of Jesusseriously.

It has always been true that people join churches formany different reasons. These reasons might include goodpreaching, vibrant youth or children's programs, good music, opportunities for outreach, pressure from a spouse, the birth

of a child, societal expectations, to be seen on Sunday, youname it. And while each of these things might get somebodyin the door and even on the roles, the goal moving forwardshould be the same: to become a committed disciple of JesusChrist. Robinson talks about what can happen when a cultureof membership rather than discipleship dominates:

A culture of membership, partly shaped by the ethos ofconsumerism, turns the church into a provider of goods

and services dubbed religious or spiritual. Moreover, itis "our church" or "my church," not "God's church." Aperson, couple, or family may go to such a church tohave a wedding or funeral, to participate in a smallgroup for personal growth, or to receive inspiration for

their work week. Nothing is wrong with any of this, except that it stops short of a full realization of thenature of the church as the people of God or the Body ofChrist or the creation of the Spirit or all three. Thechurch in such a model remains something we go to inorder to take or receive from. It may meet our needsand thrive or disappoint them and lose our interest orengagement. But the church in this model has missedwhat may be our most fundamental human need, andthat is to lose and to forget ourselves in commitment andrelationship to that which is greater than self andself-interest.

We have now entered Holy Week, the time when wremember the final days of Jesus' life and ministry. Thereperhaps no better week of the year to remember that we acalled to be "disciples" of Jesus. We will gather on Thursdnight in Drowota Hall at 5:30 p.m. for a dinner and a MaunThursday service and then again on Friday in the sanctuary5:30 p.m. to hear the Seven Last Words of Christ. Don't mthese opportunities to grow closer to Christ in your owlife. Remember, while church membership is important adoes matter, what really matters is whether we are followithe one who entered Jerusalem on a donkey, broke bread

the Upper Room, died on a cross, and who calls us to be hdisciples by spreading his love to a hurting world.

What's Church All About?by Rev. Clay Stauffer, Senior Minister

  • 7/29/2019 Spire - March 25, 2013

    3/10

When we think about allof the terrible things thathappened to Jesus during thissacred week so long ago

betrayal, arrest, torture, mocking, and death,

to name a few it can be difficult to under-stand what makes this week so holy. It's thesame question that children often ask: "why isit called Good Friday if it was the day Jesusdied?" The reason this is a Holy Week (andthe reason it is a "Good" Friday) is that through the sacrifice of our Lord and Savior we become closer to the love of God than everbefore.

The challenge, though, is that it's reallyonly as holy of a week as we make it. As

Clay noted last Sunday, it is so tempting andso easy to skip from the exuberant joy of PalmSunday to the brilliant hope of Easter. PalmSunday has long been one of my favoriteSundays of the year from the smiles of thechildren as they wave their palm brancheshigh into the air to the joyful strings andbrass that grace our worship services whowouldn't love a Sunday dedicated to shouting"Hosanna" to our savior? Easter is perhapsthe only day more hopeful and more exciting from the bright colors of new suits and

dresses to the packed out pews of our highholy day who wouldn't love a Sundaydedicated to God's love overcoming death?

What happens in between, however, laa foundation that makes our journey with Gmost complete. Only when we understathe deep suffering that Christ went throufor us can we understand how glorious h

overcoming that suffering was. Only whwe understand how agonizing his death wcan we truly appreciate how magnificehis defeat over death was. These are painfpieces of the story, but they paint a picture a Lord who loves us so much that He wwilling to die for us.

Set aside time each day this week understand and appreciate the story this unfolding. Woodmont offers so maopportunities during Holy Week to conne

with God through worship and to connect wieach other through fellowship. Hopefully ycan join us for some of these opportunities, if not you can commit to reading a part of tstory from the Bible each day (convenienbroken down by day above, thanks to R

    Stauffer and his never-ending knowledge

the Bible). However you choose to connewith God over these 7 days, let us all mathis a Holy Week together!

On Good Friday of 2012 I heard aquestion that still sparks my thoughts to thisday.

Do you celebrate the violence of the cross or do youcelebrate the power of the resurrection?

I have thought about this numerous times throughout theyear and I believe that during Holy Week this question mustbe revisited. The cross without the resurrection is simply

another act of Roman capital punishment. Good Fridwithout Easter Sunday is merely the death of a prophet. Bthis question of the celebration of violence vs. power hbecome deeper and more personal to me.

Do I celebrate the violence? Do I focus on tcondemnation that was hailed at Jesus during his sentencinAm I living a life that shouts hatred and injustice to the woraround me? Am I the voice that says you must be punishfor the mistakes of this world? Do I hurl unfound

accusations at my neighbor? Have I become a person that willstand idly by and watch the innocent beaten and abused? WillI accept the obvious evils and murderous attitudes because Iam willing to simply ride the wave of public opinion?

The violent cross is not the end of the story. Resurrectionpower came.

Do I celebrate the power? Do I focus on the spaces that arefilled with the light of grace? Am I living in a way that shoutsforgiveness to the world around me? Am I the voice thatspeaks mercy to the corrupt? Do I hurl a message of love at

my neighbor? Have I become the person that will activefight for those who can no longer fight for themselves? Wilbe an advocate for the injustice of this world in the face public opinion?

I remember the pain and violence of the cross. But thweek, I will celebrate the power of grace, mercy aresurrection.

    What will you celebrate?
