    renowned

    Testamentscholar,whosebookslinetheshelvesofmanyapastor.ButhercommitmenttohisChristianeducationdeeplyimpactedhim

    countlessothersbywayofhim.Actually,Imoneofthosefolks!Amongotherthings,Dr.Millergreatlyexpandedmyunderstandingo

    TenCommandmentsandnurturedmyloveforthebookofPsalms.

    OnepsalmthatIloveistheseventyeighthpsalm.IfIhadtosummarizeitinonesentence,Idsaythattheseventyeighthpsalmisas

    historyofGodslongfaithfulness.ItrecountsthemanywaysthatGodlovedandledhischosenpeopletheancientnationofIsrael.It

    howGod liberatedthemfromslavery inEgypt;howGodcaredforthem,protectedthem,andprovidedforthem inthedesert;how

    gavethemleaderslikeMosesandDavidtoshepherdthem.Timeandtimeagain,Godspeoplewereguiltyofsin,disobedience,andf

    lessness.Buttimeandtimeagain,Godrespondedwithpatience,restraint,andcompassion.Afterreadingtheseventyeighthpsalm,

    couldanyonenotwanttoknowGod?

    ButofallofthethingsthatIloveabouttheseventyeighthpsalm,whatIlovemostishowitopens:

    BeforeeverrecountingasingleinstanceofGodsfaithfulness,theauthorstateshisreasonforwritingthepsalminthefirstplace:to

    thenextgenerationthegloriousdeedsoftheLord,andhismight,andthewondersthathehasdone.Beautiful.Butwheredidhe,the

    thor,learn

    these

    things

    himself?

    Well,

    of

    course,

    he

    says

    that

    it

    is

    only

    what

    our

    [own]

    fathers

    have

    told

    us.

    ThoughfaithinGodistransmittedinmanyways,aprimarywayisthis:Itispassedfromonegenerationtoanother,fromparentto

    tochildschild.Often,faithinGodissomethinglearnedorinherited;itissomethinggiftedorbequeathedfromonegenerationtoanot

    Whatwouldhappenifanyonegenerationfailedtodothisforthosewhocomebehindthem?

    TheseventyeighthpsalmissomethingthatisconstantlyplayedoutintheKidsCommons.Here,faithfuladultsdoforthechildreno

    churchwhatDr.Millersmotherdidforhim.ButofthemanyfaithfuladultswhotellthenextgenerationofthegloriousdeedsoftheLo

    onegroupofthemdeservesspecialrecognition:theRotationSundaySchoolteachers.Thesearetheteachersforelementaryschool

    drenwhovolunteereachandeveryweekoftheschoolyear.Theyrarelygetaweekoffandtheyevenmorerarelycomplain,forthey

    thechildrenandthetaskbeforethem.Theyhavethequalitiesthatanyministerwoulddesire inateacher.Theyareconsistent,relia

    intelligent,joyful,andcreative.

    SheilaMathias leadstheCooking&Scienceclass,usingsimplekitchencraftstoconveygoodnews.Shecanteachthestoryof J

    OurfriendandformerWoodmontyouthministerKentMcKeeverhastakenupaveryradicalLenten

    practicethisyearheissuitingupinorangeallfortydaysofLent,insolidaritywiththosewhoare

    imprisoned.Heiswearinganorangejumpsuiteverywherehegoestowork,topickuphischildrenfrom

    school,tothemovietheaterwithhisdaughter,totheparkforfamilypicnicsandinthisunusualact,Kentislearningmuch

    aboutthestigmafelonslivewiththeirwholelives,evenafterservingtheirtime.Kentisreflectingonthisexperienceonline

    andinhisblog,KentlaysoutsomehauntingstatisticsabouttheUSprisonsystem:

    Nocountryincarceratesmorepeoplethanours.TheUShas5%oftheworldspopulation,but23%oftheworlds

    prisoners.

    Overthelast30years,theUSprisonpopulationwentfrom300,000toover2million.WiththebirthoftheWar

    onDrugs,drugoffensesaccountforthemajorityofthisunprecedentedincreaseinmassincarceration.

    AfricanAmericansareincarceratedatnearlysixtimestherateofwhites.

    Felonswhohaveservedtimeandcomeoutontheotherside(approximatelyoneinfourAmericanadults)canbe

    deniedhousing,employmentandaccesstoeducation,aswellasconstitutionalrightslikevotingandjuryservice,

    effectivelyrelegating

    them

    to

    lesser

    status

    for

    the

    rest

    of

    their

    lives.

    WhydoesthismattertousasChristians?InMatthew25,Jesustoldhisdiscipleswheretofocustheirministries:feedthe

    hungry,givedrinktothethirsty,welcomethestranger,clothethenaked,visitthesickandimprisoned.Andthenhesaysto

    them:Justasyoudidittooneoftheleastofthese,youdidittome.

    Perhaps,the

    arts

    refresh

    our

    spirits

    because

    they

    have

    something

    in

    common

    with

    God.

    They

    seem

    to

    existoutsidetime.Wecantakealmostanyofthemasanexample;whynotstartwithliterature?Let'ssay

    you're twothirds throughacaptivating story.Thepast iswhatyou'vealready read; thepresent is the

    pageyouareon.Youarenotsureabouttheending,butyourmindisenvisioningoptionalscenarios.Once

    youfinishthestory,youmightrereadthebookatwhichtimeyoucouldsimultaneouslyknowthepast,thepresentand

    thefuture.

    Thinkaboutoneofyourfavoritemusicalworks.Asyoulisten,youexperiencethepresent,enjoywhere ithasjusttaken

    youandanticipatethosedelightfulmomentsyou'velearnedtolove.

    Itmaybe thatoneof thenicestaspectsof thearts,besides theirobviouspleasuregivingproperties, is theirability to

    transport

    us

    from

    the

    restraints

    of

    time,

    allowing

    us,

    if

    ever

    so

    briefly,

    to

    simultaneously

    engage

    in

    past,

    present

    and

    fu

    ture.

    Forusmortals,though,theartsallowonlytheillusionofomniscience.ForGod,knowingallispartofbeingthegreatIAm.

    WhenweareperplexedaboutoursituationsandbringthembeforeGod,wecanfinditcomfortingtoknowHeisnotlim

    itedbyjustthepresent.Heisabletoworkinourfuture.Heistheauthorwhoknowsthelastpageandthecomposerwho,

    longago,wrotetheCoda.Heisthechoreographerwhohasplannedthroughthecurtaincall.Somethingbotheringyou?

    volunteeringinourkitchens.MystaffandIhavewatchedhowdifficultitisforthemtofindworkandhousingwithfelonies

    ontheirrecords.Withoutstableworkandstablehousing,theirpastinprisoncontributes,mostoften,toafutureofpov

    erty,strengtheninganalreadystrongnationalprisontopovertysystemwecantseemtoshake.Butevenmoremeaning
