Who we AreSpinningTop began in 2006 as Children on the Edge NZ, a branch of Children on the Edge UK, which was founded by the late, great Dame Anita Roddick in 1990.

In 2011 Children on the Edge NZ became SpinningTop, an NZ based, independent, not for profit organization giving balance to vulnerable children living in poverty, whose lives have been thrown off balance through war, oppression, natural disaster and circumstances beyond their control.

SpinningTop exists to give balance to vulnerable children living in poverty, whose

lives have been thrown off balance through war, oppression, natural disaster and circumstances beyond their control.

What we do

SpinningTop is currently working on the Thai/Burma border with children who have been forced by the oppressive military regime to flee their homeland of Burma. In the next 12 months we will also be exploring the needs of vulnerable children in the South Pacific region.

The children we currently support come from extreme poverty, living in the most basic of homes, constructed mostly of bamboo, rice sacks for flooring, running water some distance from the home and maybe two changes of clothes if they are lucky. Toys are a rarity, unless you consider rubber bands toys, which do in fact provide hours of entertainment for them.

We believe given the right balance of Fources, Education, Nutrition, Shelter and Play, these children will be empowered to become contributing members of society, free from poverty.

The support we provide prioritises the basic needs of the children within the catego-ries of the Fources, Education, Nutrition, Shelter and Play.

In addition to providing basic needs we also seek new cost effective and innovative ways to encourage sustainable communities, facilities and individuals.

SpinningTop projects focus on the four fources of Education, Nutrition, Shelter and Play, giving blance to vulnerable children.

EducationEducation is key to breaking the cycle of poverty. SpinningTop fund a wide variety of education based projects such as school assistance, transportation to and from school, assistance to acheive higher education, teaching new skills and agricultural prorammes, we’ve got it covered.

Check out our Education projects page for full details.

NutritionNutrition is key to maintaining the health and development of the children we support. With nutritious food we can prevent illness and ensure the kids can focus on their education, rather than where their next meal may come from.

Check out our Nutrition projects page for more details of projects we support!

ShelterShelter is a basic necessity of us all, yet for many of the children we support, a roof over their head is something they may not have without our support. In addition to shelter in the traditional sense of the word shelter also covers things like blankets, mats to sleep, hygiene and sanitation assistance, mosquito nets.

Check out or Shelter projects page for more details.

PlayPlay is often overlooked when managing the needs of vulnerable children, but lets face it they are kids too and deserve the right to Play and creativity.

Check out our Play projects page for more details relating to the innovative Play projects we have implemented.

Please feel free to print and utilise the contens within our projects pages to assist you in your fundraising initiatives.

Fundraising is both fun and challenging and is a great way to generate an income for the work we do. It is fulfilling to the children and to you knowing that you are doing something that will make a difference in children’s lives. Here are some ideas to help you get started:

Web-wise• Create your own online sponsorship page on www.givealittle.co.nz and email it to

your contacts. They can donate quickly and easily online with a credit or debit card. Simply follow the instructions on page 9.

Everyone’s a winner• Host a Vegas style poker night: $10 NZ to play, gamble with chips, winners

get prizes.

And the winner is…• Raffles, it’s an old favourite, and a nice little earner. With few restrictions it’s a

great way to raise money, check out rule for raffles on page 10.

Cash for questions• Pick the brains and pockets of local punters by hosting a Quiz Night at your

favourite pub.

Prizes, prizes, prizes• Ask companies to donate bottles of wine, chocolates or vouchers that you can use

as prizes for raffles or auctions, quiz nights, Vegas nights or even raffles at these types of events.

Spring clean• Empty that cupboard under the stairs and flog your old junk or unwanted items on

www.trademe.co.nz, or www.sella.co.nz. Give SpinningTop the profits.

Night out dancing• Hire a function room over a pub (often free on a weeknight) and invite your friends

to get down for a good cause.

Food for thought• Invite your friends over for a fundraising dinner at $10 NZ a head or organise a

pancake party for a larger group.

SingStar night• Have fun and invite your friends over for a charity karaoke night and offer prizes.

Check out the local video store to rent the game if you don’t have it.

Nobody says no to cake• Bake some pastries, biscuits, or delicious cupcakes and take them to your sports

club on Saturday or offer them around the office for a small fee.

Double your money• Ask your company to open the corporate wallet and match what you raise.

One lump or two?• If you work at a large organisation email the database asking your colleagues to

sponsor you the price of their morning coffee. It adds up fast!

Movie night• Ask the local cinema if they would offer a premiere for you and your friends, or if

they wanted to donate tickets as a prize with all the money being donated.

GOAL!• Organise a sports event sweepstakes. Your friends pay $3 NZ and pick a team

out of a hat. The winner gets half the total cash and the rest is donated. Check out page 10 for rules on sweepstakes.

The deduction is immediate so you don’t have to worry about keeping receipts to claim at the end of the year. All you have to think about is the difference you are making with your generous donation.
