SwedenWith a population of only 9 million, Sweden is a

small but mesmerising country known for its

snow-capped mountains, glaciers, U shaped

Valleys, incredible Northern lights sightings,

huskies and reindeer. There’s a lot of history in the

country and the populace has preserved it

wonderfully. The countryside boasts pine, spruce

and birch forest as far as the eye can see and

crystal-clear lakes perfect for a summer afternoon

dip – not to mention possibly the purest air you’ll

ever breathe.

Stockholm

Sweden’s capital city spreads out over 14 islands in

Lake Mälaren and looks out proudly to the Baltic

Sea to the east. Home to grand public buildings,

palaces, rich cultural history and museums, you can

experience the country’s 700 year-old history with

ease.

Nowhere is this better illustrated than in the Old

Town (Gamla Stan); expect and get cobblestone

streets, crooked but beautifully preserved

buildings, the Royal Palace, gothic churches and

excellent cafés, bars, restaurants and Swedish

design-ware shops. Take our advice and get a hit of

caeine at one of Stockholm’s many ne cafés

before trawling the boutiques, shops and stores of

upscale Swedish and international design

boutiques of Östermalm, and independent Swedish

labels, vintage and retro shops and boutiques of

Södermalm. If you’re a fan of Steig Larsson’s

Millennium Trilogy books and movies Södermalm is

the place to be.

Located 200km north of the Arctic Circle and

Sweden’s most northerly town, you’ll experience

natural phenomenon such as the Northern lights and

midnight sunshine. The remote town is home to only

23,000 people and much of the Sami culture is

preserved here through the active use of the North

Sami language. With miles of countryside, Kiruna is

great for hunting, shing, climbing and skiing.

A hotel in demand which books up far in advance can now be booked for December through to March

with Fleetway. Located in the Swedish Lapland on the river Torne in the remote village of Jukkasjarvi,

and constructed entirely out of ice, this iconic hotel is an exciting way to experience Sweden. 200km

north of the Arctic Circle, it remains one of the most stylish hotels in the world. The hotel melts in the

spring time into the river Torne, meaning that each year the hotel is built with a dierent design, so only

you and a select few will see the hotel in exactly the same way.

Inside, is a true spectacle. Guests have reported to have seen elaborate ice sculptures such as giant

elephants, whimsical unicorns and peacocks whose feathers have been enhanced with dierent

coloured lightbulbs. The hotel is also home to an authentic Swedish restaurant which serves up

delicacies including reindeer, elk, grouse & Artic char. There’s also an ice bar for a casual drink and a

champagne bar for those looking for more sophistication.

As part of this incredible experience, you’ll spend one night in a warm room and another sleeping on ice.

The room is kept at -5°C and your bed is entirely sculpted out of ice laden with a reindeer blanket. You’ll

be given a head to toe snow suit to keep you warm.

Although this is a holiday lled with activities such as seeing the northern lights, dog sledding and

mountain treks, snow and ice has a wonderful way of dissolving the noise and inducing a quiet, calm and

serene environment. This really is a trip to tick o your bucket list.
